Chapter 29: Feral

Chapter 29: Feral

Thomas held down the trigger as a hail of gunfire lit up the room. The creature scrambled towards him on all fours getting closer between flashes until it was upon him. He raised the rifle in front of his face as he crashed to the ground on his back from the weight of the creature. Its gnashing teeth tore at the metal of the rifle's barrel as Thomas attempted to push it back.

A loud shot echoed through the hall as Sebastian shot into the back of the creature's head showering Thomas in warm crimson. The creature did not flinch as the round passed straight through and impacted the ground next to Thomas’s head. The large exit wound began to close as the creature spat out the barrel and rose to its feet.

As the creature raised a black clawed hand to Sebastian a blast of green energy took it off of its feet. Subject zero slammed into the wall as Ava stood hand outstretched. It snarled as it pulled itself from the dented metal. Its broken arm snapped violently back into place as it let loose a vitriolic hiss.

With a grunt she forced another wave of energy from her arm. Hit after hit subject zero was propelled down the hall as it attempted to walk back towards the group. Attempting to fire the rifle the barrel exploded as Thomas was flung back. Shards of metal bounced around the hall as Carlos dove to cover the bodies of Ava, Sebastian and Kazama with his own.

Gunfire erupted from down the hall as a large man suited in armour stepped out holding a heavy machine gun. The sound of its rounds deafened the group as they held their ears under the shelter of Carlos’ body. Rounds ricocheted off of the metal walls and Carlos as he grunted with each impact. The creature screamed as its body was riddled with lead.

As the gunfire ceased the armoured man began to shout in panic as the creature's bloodied body pushed out every round sending them clattering to the floor. It snarled as it launched itself forward towards him, claws unsheathed and mouth open wide. The mans screams were drowned out by further gunfire as a supporting team fired upon them both.

Thomas lay in a pool of ruby red blood as he laughed and coughed to himself. Walking to his side Sebastian crouched in front of him knowing there was nothing to be done. Between the shrapnel from the rifle exploding and the hail of machine gun fire there were too many wounds to pressurise.

Thomas’s bloodied had grabbed Sebastian's arm with the fingers he had left. “Don't you fuckin waste this. Use that mad cunt. Follow him out. If you see the doctor. Take his fuckin eye out for me.” Thomas chuckled to himself as his remaining eye unfocused. With a final heavy breath his hand released Sebastian’s arm and fell to the crimson pool below.

“We have to do what he says.” Ava struggled to stand as Kazama helped her up. The veins on her face appeared visibly blackened as she held onto the offered arm to stand. “I need to get outside.” she steadied herself on a wall as she moved forward. Sebastian closed Thomas’ eye as he turned to join the group.

“If anything happens with that puta want you to all get behind me. I will take him” Carlos looked to the ground ashamed that he had not been able to protect the man he had come to think of as his friend. Kazama placed a reassuring hand on Carlos’ now exposed back. “We will face whatever comes together my friend.”

Sounds of gunfire and screams guided the group to their destination. Each new area they entered brought forth more mutilated bodies and victims begging to be finished off. Individual gunshots rang out as those who could ended their own suffering. Ava struggled to move forward as she stumbled over outstretched limbs littering the ground.

In the centre of the room they came to was a large metal and thick glass box. The box stood a table with broken restraints. Several corpses in lab coats were littered around a large jagged hole in the thick glass. “Every monster has its cage. Not all can hold them.” Kazama yanked a rifle from a rigormortis stricken arm as he looked upon the scene.

“What the fuck is this thing?” Sebastian slumped into an office chair as he looked upon the room littered with endless corpses. “It spoke to me.” Ava collapsed down on the floor in front of the shattered glass wall. Carlos ran to her side kneeling down beside her and checking the darkening veins on her face.

Sebastian leaned forward in his chair “what do you mean it spoke?” she lifted a hand to her head. A blacked finger pointed to her temple as she struggled to hold it up “in my head. I heard a woman ask for help. It seemed to look pained as she spoke. She was struggling. She knew I'd hear her.” Ava’s hand fell to her side as she coughed.

“Ay what's wrong with you girl?” Carlos lifted her to her feet as she continued to cough. “I need to go outside. It's been too long and using my power didn't help. I need the open air” she struggled with her words as Carlos lifted her onto his back. “Then we get outside. Like the old man said. Follow the monster” Carlos began walking towards the direction of distant screams and gunfire as the other two flanked him either side.

Ava lay unconscious on Carlos’ back as the three men ran down the hall. Ignoring the pleas of injured guards on the ground they pressed on as the sounds of combat drew closer. The red flashing lights came to a sudden stop as the facility's loudspeaker crackled. “This is Doctor Himmel. I speak to you from a remote location far from you. This location is lost. Alexandria protocol will now be enacted.”

The ground shook as charges in the walls of the lower levels detonated on the supports. One by one each level detonated and fell to rubble as the facility began to bury itself. The three men ran with all their might as they came upon a large glowing green sign posted above a door “evacuation tunnel” the three men burst through the door sending a blinding light into their eyes.

Down the end of a long stone hall the sun shone through. The three scrambled through the piled bodies as chunks of stone began to fall from the roof of the tunnel. Behind them the roof began to cascade downwards panel by panel. Carlos threw Ava from his back into the arms of Sebastian and Kazama. “Time to go gringo.”

Sebastian nodded to him as Carlos braced the roof of the tunnel with his arms. “Anata no gisei wa meiyo aru yūjin to narudeshou!” Kazama exclaimed at the top of his lungs as Carlos smiled “I got no idea what you just said” the roof began to shudder as Carlos trembled under its immense weight. “Better have that table ready ma. I'm coming for dinner” the tunnel collapsed to nothing as a single tear left his eye.
