The pain shot through his body like lightning as Sebastian woke. Laying on a cold concrete slab he struggled to focus his vision. The bright lights overhead dazed him as he attempted to roll to his side. His body was heavy and limp as he struggled to move. With all his will he forced himself onto his side.
Before him was a large concrete room that was brightly lit by overhead beams. Labouring to breathe he noticed there were four others in the same state as him. All began to stir and struggle as they attempted to awaken from the haze. Rolling further, Sebastian fell to the cold hard ground below.
“Easy now subject four. You are recovering from anaesthesia. Your body will not respond as you wish” a stern German accented voice emanated from a speaker above him. He forced his hands to pull him from the ground as another shot of pain rang through his chest. “Do not attempt to get up subject four.”
Sebastian remembered this as the voice that had spoken to the group before it all went dark. His memories of the room flooding with gas flowed back to him. Coughing he tried to move his paralysed tongue. He choked on spit as he attempted to speak. He slumped back into the cold concrete block he had awoken on.
He began to breathe heavily as he looked over himself. His bare chest was covered in several long thin freshly stitched wounds. He longed to scream but his deadened vocal cords would not allow him. He struggled to stand as the others in the room began to attempt to sit up.
“You have all been subject to your first round of our process. Each of you has been thoroughly examined by myself and my team. We have found that each of you are prime specimens for our purpose here. Congratulations.” The Doctor's pride shone through with his words. A small feminine chuckle came from across the room.
Ava sat perched on the edge of her slab barely keeping her head up. The same wounds adorned her nearly naked body. The doctor had at least allowed each person the dignity of undergarments. She struggled to lift her head to look at Sebastian. A single glowing green pupil shone through her raven black hair.
To Sebastian’s right the first person to stand was subject three, Carlos. His chiselled muscular frame leaned against the rough concrete wall. His wounds were edged in burnt flesh. A plasma cutting torch had to be used to breach his skin. He grunted to himself as he attempted to pull himself forwards.
“You will all be instrumental in the next step of….” a grizzled Australian accented voice interrupted him “hey mate i know you love the sound of your own voice but shut up man. My head hurts already without your shit.” subject one Thomas was lying on his back on his slab cursing to the voice in the sky. He rolled over to face the wall grumbling as he went.
“Hey!” Sebastian forced the word from his throat. The sudden outburst was met with the eyes of subject five Kazama. His calming expression did little to reflect the situation the group found themselves in. Kazama cared not for his wounds as he calmly stood up and began to dress in the grey jumpsuit that had been left by his slab.

Once dressed he calmly walked to the centre of the room. There sat a large knee high round concrete table. Without a word he sat legs crossed and began to close his eyes and calmly breathe. Amazed by the man's calm demeanour, Sebastian attempted to pull himself towards him. He struggled to his feet and limped towards the table.
“Hey. Hey sir. You know what's going on here? Who are these people? Why have they got us here?” Sebastian swallowed his pain as Kazama sat unmoving. Carlos slumped down opposite Kazuma and leaned on the table “hey puto the man asked you a question. One that I wanna know the answer to.”
The man's deep voice echoed off of the stone walls as he spoke. His balled fist trembled as he winced at the pain of his wounds. “What are you stupid or something?” he leaned forward bringing himself closer to Kazama. “Hey dumbass, no hablas ingles?” he attempted to stand as he got closer to the silent man.
A flash of green light passed in front of Carlos’ face before a plastic fork shattered hard against the wall to his left. In the direction it came stood Ava her eyes glowed neon green as she held out a hand with her other holding up the bottom portion of her jumpsuit. “He's a mute buddy. He's not gonna say shit”
“So uhhh. What's with the glow?” Sebastian cautiously asked as Ava sat down at the table. She winced at the sting of her wounds as her eyes halted their glow. She tore the cuff from her jumpsuit sleeve and fashioned it into a strip. With both hands she smoothed back her long black hair and fashioned it into a ponytail. The strip fabric was secured tightly at its base.
Her soft pale features fashioned into a scowl as a bolt of pain shot through her chest. “To put it in its simplest terms, I move stuff without touching it.” her careless attitude portrayed that at this point in her life her abilities had become mundane to her. She looked over to Thomas still lying on his slab “come over here dude. Adults are talking.”
A slight chuckle came from Carlos as Thomas rose up. “Ey I like this girl man” he nudged Sebastian's’ arm. His great strength sent a shockwave of vibrations through Sebastian's bones. He rubbed his elbow as he exhaled heavily from the shock. “So I'm guessing from the plasma cutter burns and the fact you nearly shattered my arm just now you’re stronger than you look.”
“Bingo gringo. It's fun man. I be picking up cars n shit” Carlos smiled as he attempted to flex one of his muscles. A shot of pain through his arm put an end to his efforts. “ Thomas slumped down to the table. His unkempt grey hair dangled in front of his face. Ava tore the cuff from the other sleeve of her jumpsuit and gave it to him. He reluctantly took it and secured his hair.
“So she's a spooky bitch, he's a buff bastard and you are?” Thomas pointed a quaking finger to Sebastian. “I'm a detective with the South Carolina police department. I have a sixth sense when it comes to cases. Every hunch I have is correct. It got me targeted. I should be dead. Last I remember I was bleeding out.” Carlos flinched backwards at his words “hey what I said about lifting cars. They were all mine man I didn't steal nothing”
Sebastian chuckled to himself coughing as pain shot through his lungs. “I think we’re past that. I'm in no position to start arresting people here.” Thomas placed his fists on the table and pushed himself down on them “i shot up a buncha cops right before waking up here. Got shot meself. I'm a dead man walkin.”
Carlos clapped with glee “man this is hella weird i was in a shootout with some cholos from another cartel when I got hit in the head and woke up here. Hey girl, are you dead too?” his gleeful smile faded as he looked towards Ava. she had bought her knees up to her chest and had her head in her arms.
“I tried to kill myself. Life was too much and she wouldn't shut up so I took a bottle of pills and made them all disappear.” her tone had become one of sadness as she spoke. “Who wouldn't shut up?” Sebastian had picked up on her off handed comment. An expression of shock came across her face as she backed away to stand up. “No one. Good talk gang” her sarcasm sat with Sebastian as she walked back to her slab.
