Chapter 14: List

Chapter 14: List

Kevin’s pale fingers traced the edges of the aged leather bound tome. Its edges seemed to clutch at its contents protecting it from prying eyes. As he sat in the darkness of the cabin he continually picked it up and put it down. Being ever more tempted by the secrets it contained. “Cmon what's the harm in reading?” liv muttered impatiently.

Officer Williams was out on a late night patrol leaving Kevin to his own devices. He had set up his bedroom mirror in a chair in the front room so he could speak with Liv face to face. She reached out her hands frustrated that she could not reach the file. “I don't trust him and after how he teased you I don't think you should either.” Kevin's eyes were locked on the file's metal clasp as he spoke.

Liv grumbled in frustration and turned away. “Look you wanna open it so bad why don't you just take over like you did with Todd and read it?” Some part of Kevin knew that she had been unable to do anything like that since she had dealt with Todd. “If it were that simple I would just be living your life right now without you” she slumped down next to Kevin on the sofa as she sighed.

Her finger fingers were icicles as she ran them down Kevin’s face and the length of his arm. She gripped the back of Kevin's hand intertwining her fingers with his and placing his palm on the book. "Please. He promised me a body.” she looked to him with a sadness that she had never shown before.

The heavy metal clasp on the book clanked as Kevin flipped it open. He lifted its thick front cover and let it down to the side. The pages were old and yellowed from years of wear and tear. The first page read “Hoc tomo ligatus in cute humana continet stultitiae peccata. semel vacuum contractus impletur” Liv reeled and pulled her hand away upon reading.

“What does it say?” Kevin looked to her with curiosity at her reaction. Her face was adorned with a grimace of disgust. “Just keep reading” she pulled her sleeves over her hands as she sat trying to forget the tomes words. Kevin shifted uneasy in his seat not noticing that the mirror had fallen over.

Liv sat next to him still. Her curious eyes eagerly eyed the books next page. It hosted a list of page numbers and the letters of the alphabet corresponding to them. The book looked to have at least one hundred pages. Kevin flipped to the first page under A. there he saw a familiar face. That of his childhood baseball coach.

Paul Anderson.

Date of birth: 07/27/1965

Occupation: Elementary School Coach

Address: 35 Pinebark avenue, Lamplight South Carolina

Incidents: Aggravated assault, solicitation of sexual acts from a minor, creation of child pornography

Recommended action: intimidation, exposure

Kevin couldn't believe the words on the page. Mr Anderson had never even shouted at anyone let alone been in trouble with the police. These records couldn't have been from the police department. Officer Williams would have never allowed Kevin to play baseball if he had known of the man's crimes. These reports had to have come from somewhere else.

The face of his former coach stared back at him from the page as Liv began to chuckle to herself. “He wants us to be some goon that roughs people up!” she burst into laughter as she held her stomach. Kevin flipped through more pages. Faces flew by one after another. Some people he knew and others complete strangers.

Recommended action: Termination

“Not just rough people up” Kevin had stopped on the page of someone unknown to him. The balding large man stared back at him with malice. Kevin looked towards the written portion of the page. “Incidents: manslaughter, murder, sexual assault, desecration of a corpse, grave robbing. Jesus this dude is messed up” Liv studied the page with rampant interest.

Kevin's heart sank. He knew the stranger would teach him more and give Liv her own life but he was disgusted by the acts that would be required of him in order to grow stronger and become more. A quiet part of Kevin hungered for more power despite the cost. The itch he could not scratch demanded he obey the stranger to benefit himself.

Liv dragged Kevin to his feet with an ice cold hand. She jumped excitedly at the prospect of the both of them becoming more. “Hey come one we only have to scare this guy and show the world what a creep he is. It will be easy.” she smiled widely at the prospect. Kevin scowled “This guy.”

She took his words as an agreement and skipped gleefully towards the cabin’s bedroom. It was only now Kevin noticed that the mirror lay face down on the armchair and Liv was moving around the room no longer confined to the reflection. She huffed in frustration as her hand passed through the rusted doorknob.
