CHAPTER 4: SAMAYA

„Let’s go, Samaya! Faster!” Fenrir shouted at the little grey she-wolf, his twin sister, who was still far away behind him.

And Samaya listened to him and tried to catch up with him as fast as she could, and this made the run of the two wolf cubs, one after another, seem a kind of race of power.

But it wasn't only an external struggle, but an inner one too, and, no matter how much didn't Fenrir try to make his sister improve her skills, Samaya didn't make good progress in anything: neither in running nor in other things the other little wolf cubs were involved in every day. And this was really weird as if the two brothers weren't twins but strangers because unlike Fenrir, who was so energetic and full of life, Samaya preferred to live in the shadow.

Well, Samaya was generally considered a freak: she used to spend almost all day in nature's lap, lying somewhere on a warm ground while admiring in silence the little creatures that were living in the forest. And what she loved the most was watching the beautiful butterflies that were often playing with her little, black, and warm nose, and also listening to how the deer was drinking at the river.

And that „listening” was something that Samaya could only imagine because she has never listened to any sound, and the simple taste of the water licked with her pink tongue, made her shudder a little bit inside each time she was tasting it. That's why she named that thrill of her body, felt because of the coldness of the water, „sound" because she could get to know the world only that way.

However, even if that way of knowing the world was something weird for others, it was normal for Samaya, for she hadn't the features of a normal person to know the world through hearing, speaking, or other sensations felt by others while they were listening to the sounds: she could understand what happened around her only trusting herself and her own instincts, and this because she was deaf.

Thus, being different, made the other members of her tribe consider her weird. But, to be honest, they weren't marginalizing her just because she couldn't hear or speak. It was also because of her ability to understand them: what they were saying, what they wanted from her, or what they were trying to do behind her back. And this was so strange because - how could someone deaf understand a noise? How could a mute wolf cub communicate with her family? It was something Magic. Black Magic, maybe?! That's why they were often pushing her to the edge of the group while considering her the weak ring of their tribe.

But this was hurting Fenrir's heart, making it bleed so much, each time he was seeing this. And that pain in his soul was caused by the big love he had for his sister, and namely that love was driving him crazy sometimes, especially when he was seeing that all his efforts, all he did to make her react, were in vain: Samaya simply didn't want to cooperate. What she was really doing was sinking more into her noiseless world, opening her heart only for the creatures of the forest, but never for her people.

And this was so because, instead of playing with him more or trying to at least get closer to her people, Samaya only spent hours and hours admiring the trees, the deer, the butterflies, or the flowers in the sunny glades. But she couldn't ever spend more than five minutes playing with Fenrir or the other wolf cubs, considering it boring, considering this something she couldn't understand, and this often made Fenrir furious, killing him inside and slowly transforming him into a monster.

Actually, Fenrir still remembered the first time he's been rude to her. It probably happened when they were four or five and when he, as usual, tried to make her react and enter his game. But Samaya tried to ignore him that day too and turned her back to him intending to go to a sunny glade to play with the butterflies, or maybe to the river to admire the deer. And this simply drove him crazy and without even thinking that she couldn't hear him, the little wolf cub jumped on her and put her to the ground.

And this has been something that Samaya never expected from her twin brother. „What’s wrong with him this time?” She wondered, trying to stand up. Yet, she couldn't because Fenrir was pushing her to the ground with all his force while slowly grumbling at her.

„Aaa, his probably playing," she thought and decided to stay calm and wait because she was sure that he'd give up soon on the idea of making her play with him, and when he would understand that she wasn't in the mood to play with him, he would have gone away, as he was generally doing.

Actually, she definitely wasn't interested in games and this was only because she was frightened of the deafness that was swallowing her completely in the darkness of the sounds, and she was also afraid of those drums that were all the time heard in her head.

When or why she started to listen to those drums, she didn't remember, but she was so afraid of them, especially of the moment when their sound was increasing in volume, making her inner ear strangely pulsate, her heart madly beat in her chest, and her breath interrupt. And when this happened, she always wanted to run away because the frightening rhythm of the drums was sometimes unbearable, making her feel a terrible pain in her brain. After that, when the pain was going away, she was seeing, on a white giant screen, in her head, two eyes of fire, and, along with those eyes, a scary voice, that seemed coming out of the void, was all the time telling her: „you won't ever be able to hear any sound of the world you are living in until the time of the eternal darkness won't come again."

However, even if she listened to those words all the time, she never understood them. Also, being mute, she couldn't ask anyone what could those words mean. That's why she tried to understand alone their message, using only the limited knowledge she could acquire in her short life. Thus, in time, she associated the night, the voice was talking about, with the night that comes on earth after dusk when every single living creature goes to bed to recover powers for a new day and when she felt so relaxed, watching the fireflies'blinking light, glimmering in front of her eyes while the slow and rhythmical breath of her beloved brother, that was sleeping next to her, was so alluring, making her also want to go to sleep, being aware that her father was somewhere next to them, watching their sleep, and this made her feel so protected.

Suddenly, the little she-wolf winced, feeling the deep bite of Fenrir's fangs on her fur. „Aaa," she shouted in her mind. „He's not playing this time. What's wrong with him? Why does he hurt me? Why is he that mean to me today?"

Looking back, with furious eyes, Samaya shuddered again because she saw something devilish blinking in her brother's eyes, something that frightened her so much. Yet, it was something that she couldn't understand. „Really? Is this the time of the eternal night that the voice was talking about? When everything will be sunken into darkness? If it's so, I'll teach that evil some manners, I'll teach it what means to mess with me and try to steal my world," she yelled in her head, with all her power, and, after a few moments of showing her fangs to Fenrir, she also tasted from his ear.

„Aaa,” Fenrir yelled, crawling back and allowing his sister to breathe. But he was so amazed by her reaction because it was something she had never done before: react.

After a few meters of crawling back, Fenrir decided that it was the right time to take his human shape back and he transformed himself into a little boy right away: with his left ear bleeding and with his eyes bathed in tears because of the pain. But, even though that ear was burning after the bite, the boy started to smile.

„What’s wrong with him?” Samaya wondered with her eyes also filled with tears and watching that little, stupid boy she knew as her brother.

But what was annoying her so much was that he was smiling after he had hurt her. And this made her so upset, and this made her shudder inside because of the anger, and this made her yell with all her heart: „A few minutes ago, he tried to hurt me. And now, is he smiling? Yes, he's laughing at me and he's so weird. That's why I don't consider you my brother anymore, Fenrir."

And she was right to be upset because that Fenrir, that was in front of her, was so weird at that moment when he was staring at her as if he saw a ghost or something while she was crawling back, toward the trunk of a thick pine, transforming into a little girl: something that never happened before.

Actually, both kids have been born as human babies. But soon after their birth, a few days after they had seen the sunlight for the first time, their power started to increase and the two transformed into wolf cubs. But unlike Fenrir, who turned into a human baby at his father's command, Samaya continued in her wolf body.

This unexpected event alarmed her parents so much because if she hadn't taken her baby's shape back, then she would have died because of hunger, and if she had died, her mother would have died too, because of the sorrow. But Samaya survived: in spite of all the worries, against all the prognostications, despite all the weird talks of the other members of the tribe about her strange birth.

And Samaya survived because, at first, Dike and Samandra, her parents, gave her to lick some cow milk. Later, they fed her with cooked meat. Thus, years passed and Samaya grew up a little bit, being able to face life alone. But even though her body was growing up every day like any other normal wolf cub, something was different about her: she was a deaf-mute wolf cub, and this brought a lot of problems in her life later, problems like marginalization, bad words that were spoken behind her back, and... the solitude. Yet, spite all these odd things, she faced the world.

Eventually, she winced when she heard: „Can you talk to me?” It was Fenrir’s voice heard in her head and this made her shudder, not because of fear but because she was confused.

„What? What is he talking about? He has definitely lost his mind. I'll complain to our father when I am able to do that, at the moment the darkness will come, that time the eyes are all the time talking about, in my head. And when that time comes and when the spell is broken, you'll see what I can do, Fenrir. And I swear that I'll tell father about everything you did to me today."

„Go ahead! Tell him!” Fenrir said. „But first, you must tell me about the voice and about the spell.”

„Aaa? What voice? What spell?” And she blinked quickly from her eyelashes.

„About which you've just talked about. Only what. You said that.”

„Did I say? About? Aaa? Whaaat? Can Fenrir hear me? But, how?”

The big surprise made Samaya stand up and take a few steps toward Fenrir, on all four because she was used to walking only on four legs and even though she was a little girl again and she could have walked like any other normal kid, she simply didn't know how to do that. That's why she preferred to walk as she has done in those five years of her short existence.

Thus, being only a few millimeters from Fenrir’s, loudly breathing in his face, Samaya stared into his eyes. „They are normal again,” she thought. „He’s back to normal now. He’s not mad anymore.”

„Yeah, of course, I am normal. I’ve always been like that. I just… I've just been upset with you. That’s all.”

„Huh, he did that again. He talked to me again, answering my question. But, how? How is this possible?”

For the first time, Fenrir noticed that Samaya wasn’t moving her lips while talking to him. Yet, he was able to hear her words. And even though that was the first time they could talk to each other, none of them knew how could they do that.

„Telepathy,” their father’s voice has been heard not too far from them and both children, right away, looked at Dike, who was standing only a few steps away from them, kindly watching them.

„Telepathy?” Fenrir asked, barely keeping up with his feelings. „But… how is she doing this, papa? She doesn’t even move her lips, but I can hear her.”

„She’s talking with her heart. Just like you.”

„Just like me?” The little boy asked. „I don’t even know how to do this, papa. I never did this. I think you are wrong. It’s just…”

„…magic?” Dike answered with another question. „You don’t have to look for an explanation where is something magic involved, Fenrir. If this happens, you only have to accept this. Just like a gift the Titans gave you."

Catching the curious glance Samaya had at that moment while staring at them, not understanding a word of what they said, Dike laughed. And both children have been so surprised by their father's reaction, not understanding at all the reason why did he laugh.

Thus, quickly blinking from their eyelashes, both children kept staring at Dike, waiting for an answer because that laugh was really weird: neither Fenrir said something funny nor Samaya did something to provoke that laughter.

Yet, Dike laughed. And... there was one more strange thing there: Fenrir wasn't sure that Dike could hear his sister's inner voice. But later when Dike was sitting between them while the three of them were sitting under a huge rotated pine, and Dike was also playing with a multicolored butterfly that sat down on his index finger, he told his children a big secret they didn't know:

„This is something older than thousands of years,” Dike started his story. „It started with father Chaos, the Father of the Universe, who invented this manner of talking after his defeat. And he did this because he could use only his huge eyes of fire, but he still had a lot of thoughts to tell the world. However, having no lips to use for talking, he invented telepathy - to communicate with others. And, as far as I can see, he blessed Samaya with this gift of using the mind for talking. And you've been also blessed, Fenrir, if you can hear her inner voice."

„What about you, father? Do you hear what she’s saying?” Fenrir asked while his eyes were gleaming because of curiosity.

„Of course, I hear her. Actually, I heard everything she said, right from the moment she started to talk in her head. But because she couldn’t hear what I was saying or thinking, I preferred to wait because I was sure that, in time, she would learn to control the flow of her thoughts and emotions and that, one day, she would be able to talk to us, too. And today it’s that day and you don’t even know how happy I am, my boy,” Dike said and hugged his both children, gently kissing the top of their heads.

„But, father, how to talk to her from now on? I’m afraid I won’t be able to do this again,” Fenrir said sadly.

„Just listen to your heart, son. If you really want to talk to someone, you’ll do this: using the voice of your mind or the one of your heart. And you’ll do this only if you have enough kindness to share with the world, my boy.”

Fenrir closed his eyes. He wasn’t that sure that what Dike said was something he could do, but he still decided to do this. So, closing his eyes, he formed the words in his head, the words he wanted to tell Samaya, but… in the end, he couldn’t find any magical channel through which to send them to her. That's why he became sad again and, deeply sighing, he said: „Nothing happens, papa. I can’t do it.”

„Yes, you can,” he heard Samaya’s voice in his head again and he understood that she was very happy. „I hear your words. You said you love me,” and this was true. Those were the words he tried to send to Samaya.

„But… how can she hear me? There wasn’t any channel through which to send the words and…”

„Just… I hear you, and this is all that matters,” Samaya said cheerfully. „Right, papa? If I can hear you and Fenrir, does it mean that the spell is broken now?”

„The spell? What spell?” Dike asked because he really didn’t know anything about any spell. He had never had enemies on this Planet and also nothing evil happened to him in those ten thousand years since he was on Earth. The only one who could wish him ill was Eris, but she was still imprisoned in Māṉsṭar Kēlaksi, and, as far as he knew, her evil thoughts couldn’t reach Earth: it was too far, it was impossible.

„There are drums in my head,” Samaya suddenly said. „They are always talking to me and they say that the spell will be broken at the moment the night of shadows will take over the world again and, only then, I’ll be able to hear the sounds of nature and the melody of your voice, father.”

„And, who is talking to you?!” Dike asked, deeply looking into her eyes. „Can you see who is talking to you?”

„Two eyes of fire,” Samaya replied. „But… they aren’t that frightening now as they had been at the beginning. The last time they talked to me, I mean last night, I could see them and it was a glimmer of fear in that glance. And I think that they were also crying, papa.”

Chaos! Chaos was talking to Samaya for so long, but Dike didn’t know about this. Yes, he has been punished for letting Eris’s heart escape from Māṉsṭar Kēlaksi and hide somewhere, but he was sure that Chaos didn't hate him and that Dike was still his faithful servant. But, Chaos cried, in Samaya’s dream. Why did he cry? It can’t be. Chaos was just an amalgam of dead stars and he had no soul. How could he cry then? Or... at least it had been so at the beginning. At that moment alive were only his eyes, and maybe his heart, which was also the heart of the Cosmos.

And Dike also knew that Chaos had limitless power, but he had never known that he had a soul too. This meant Dike had never been able to totally understand his father and, also, he hadn’t been ever capable of understanding his messages. That’s why Chaos chose Samaya as his messenger on Earth, and that meant that something evil was floating in the air.
