9: the invaders

Joulo gritted her teeth as panic gripped her body. She spared another glance down and regretted it as she saw the ants that crawled across her body. Slowly, they made their way up her legs. She swatted at them, hit them, shook the thin rags that constituted her dress, all in vain to remove the insects.

The ant card at her feet had transformed into a hive. It housed dozens of ants that fed upon her mana to sustain themselves. They burrowed into her mountains, crawled, and bit like the parasites they were as they carved out their home. They fed upon her plants, drained them of nutrients so they could grow; so they could feed their god at her expense.

Her mountains were infested, and she could feel every single one of them. A crawling sensation across her body she couldn’t swat away or itch. They just needed to disappear. She didn’t want to be fed upon by the creation of another god. She just wanted to live.

In her desperation, Joulo reached for something nearby to scrape the insects off. Anything to reduce the itch that spread across her body. Without thinking, she grabbed a card and reduced the sensation for a moment. It was when she looked at what she used is when she realized what she had done.

The system acknowledged the deal and pried the monster card out of her hand.

They had accidentally sent a slime into battle against the hive. She had used the card against another. They were now destined to meet.

Joulo watched on with no way to change or delay the outcome. Powerless over her own domain, and unable to save others once again.

A god that lacked godly powers had sent her one minion to a battle it wasn’t ready for.

----------------------------------------

Slime was a good minion.

She was a terrifying monster that devoured the world. She was the hand that enacted the will of her creator. She was gifted a body of pure destruction.

She also really liked plants.

Slime liked plants so much that she even kept moss in her body, so they would always be close. Little green flakes that felt nice when the sun was on them. Slime liked it when her moss liked sunlight.

As much as she liked plants, it was her servitude that defined her. She would eat for the Creator so they could grow big and strong. With each meal, the master grew, and it was always the guide that was ready to help. The guide would teach, and since Slime was a good learner, it helped her to be even better at eating.

Slime learned so much about plants she evolved to become a Green Slime. Now she was even better at eating. Now she was even better at helping the Creator.

Her help even got the Create to create! A new plant had sprouted in the dungeon. It was big and had new colors. Big yellow color because it had a lot of flowers. These flowers weren’t food, not yet. The Creator had a mission for this plant, big plans because they were so smart. It was going to do a big eat and make lots of mana!

As much as she enjoyed watching the Creator create, she got distracted.

She rolled towards something new.

Slime had found a small brown dot that danced on one of her plants. It was weird because it wasn’t a slime or even a plant. It looked like a rock, but its body was too segmented and was held aloft by tiny pillars that moved with it.

Slime was curious. She liked new things because new things often meant food. She was about to eat it when it did something strange. The tiny creature picked up a leaf and turned to walk away with it. The soon-to-be-food was stealing her food!

Slime rolled forward, and dove upon the little moss thief and its haul. She absorbed both into her body where they floated. The moss slowly dissolved as it bubbled and fizzled inside her, while the new thing took longer.

The new thing had a hard outside like a rock, so was hard to eat. Slime had eaten rocks before. She would eat this new creature, for it was her purpose. The little animal was just food for the Creator.

Suspended in Slime’s gelatin insides, the little creature wiggled, swam, and even bit her! It was rude and even hurtful, but Slime was the master of gluttony and the world was food. It could do nothing to break free. When the creature stopped wiggling, she heard the words of the guide as they praised her efforts.

> Invader Slain: Mana gained

Slime didn’t know what an invader was, but she did know what mana was. That was good. It meant these new things were really good food. They were just hard to eat, as the invader’s body didn’t bubble or fizzle. It would take hours to eat, but they could be slain in just a few minutes. That made them a double meal. Mana now and then mana later when they dissolved.

Slime was happily chewing on the little invader when she noticed others. A lot of tiny invaders had approached her. She didn’t know what they wanted, but they were food and that’s all that mattered! She lunged and grabbed a few, but there were a lot. More than she could eat at once.

The little invaders she missed touched her body and flexed their little bodies. They tore small holes in her membrane as they bit into her. With her outside membrane torn, her liquid insides started to leak out, slowly at first, but it was enough for the invaders to reach in and latch on to the plants she kept inside her body.

Those were her plants! Those weren’t food, they were a part of her! She didn’t like how the outside invaders stole her plants, so she rolled onto them, picking them up into her body where they swam about with the others. They were hard to eat, but she just needed them to stop biting her. They couldn’t bite her from the inside.

The efforts were enough, as the first few invaders she picked up had stopped moving. The messages of the guide appeared three times as the invaders drowned.

> Invaders Slain: Mana gained

They were being eaten and fought back, but Slime’s body wasn’t big enough. She wasn’t strong enough. She held several of the creatures in her body at once, but they were spread out and able to reach her membrane. They crawled outward and latch onto her torn outsides.

She could win and eat the invaders for the Creator if only she was bigger. If only there weren’t more invaders that marched towards her and clung to her body as they bit into her. An endless stream of meals that would make food out of her.

She tried to flee, but they clung to her body with those large stick-like teeth they had. She rolled and bounced, but her torn body bled. It slowed down her movements. Other invaders pulled their kin from her body before they could drown.

Slime knew she couldn’t win, but she also couldn’t flee. She tried to run to her Creator’s crystal to help her, but her liquid insides stuck to the ground and she couldn’t move fast enough. There was no pain, but she knew she was getting smaller. Lesser. She shrunk with every bite as the invaders carried away parts of her back toward their home.

She was being eaten, and couldn’t fight back…

She tried. A few drowned inside of her body, but there were always more. They swarmed and tore at her until she couldn’t move. They drank her insides and stole the plants in her body.

They were hungrier than her, and now she was their food.
