Chapter 73: Into the Fire

Emberfang Canyon was a harsh and unforgiving landscape. The air was thick with the scent of sulfur, and the ground was cracked and scorched from years of volcanic activity. The canyon’s jagged cliffs loomed high above, casting long shadows that seemed to move of their own accord.

As Damien and his team approached the canyon’s entrance, they were met by a group of Valdris soldiers stationed at a nearby outpost. Their leader, Captain Orin, greeted them with a crisp salute.

“Lord Damien,” Orin said, his voice steady. “We’ve scouted the area as best we can, but the enemy’s numbers are overwhelming. They’ve established a stronghold around the obelisk.”

Damien studied the map Orin provided, noting the enemy’s defensive positions. “We’ll need to create a diversion. If we can draw their forces away from the obelisk, we’ll have a chance to destroy it.”

Roland grinned, his shield slung across his back. “Leave the diversion to me. I’ll make sure they know we’re here.”

Cassian nodded. “I’ll take the high ground and provide cover. Lyra and I can handle any stragglers.”

Lyra smirked, her twin blades gleaming in the sunlight. “Sounds like a plan.”

THE ASSAULT BEGINS

Under the cover of night, the team moved into position. Roland and a squad of soldiers took the western approach, their movements deliberate and calculated. When they were in place, Roland raised his shield and banged it with his sword, the sound echoing through the canyon.

“Come on, you ugly bastards!” he shouted. “Come and get us!”

The response was immediate. Rift creatures poured out of their stronghold, their twisted forms illuminated by the glowing obelisk in the distance. They charged toward Roland’s position, snarling and howling.

Roland met them head-on, his shield a bulwark against their assault. His sword flashed as he cut down one creature after another, his movements precise and unrelenting. The soldiers behind him fought valiantly, their formation holding firm.

Meanwhile, Cassian perched on a cliff overlooking the battlefield, his bow at the ready. He picked off enemies with deadly accuracy, each shot finding its mark.

Lyra and a smaller team flanked the enemy, their attacks swift and brutal. Lyra’s twin blades danced through the chaos, striking down any creature that dared to cross her path.

Damien used the diversion to slip past the enemy’s front lines, his eyes fixed on the obelisk. It pulsed with dark energy, its power feeding the Rift above it. He activated Phase Step, blinking through the shadows and reappearing near the obelisk.

THE OBELISK’S GUARDIAN

As Damien approached the obelisk, the ground trembled. From the shadows emerged a massive figure—a Rift Titan. Its body was covered in molten rock, and its eyes burned with an intense, malevolent light. It wielded a massive hammer, its every movement radiating raw power.

Damien gripped Ebonfang tightly, its runes glowing brighter in response to the Titan’s presence. He knew this would be his toughest battle yet.

The Titan roared, raising its hammer high and bringing it down with earth-shattering force. Damien dodged, the impact sending shockwaves through the ground. He countered with Astral Slash, the wave of energy striking the Titan’s armored chest but barely leaving a mark.

The Titan retaliated, swinging its hammer in a wide arc. Damien activated Celestial Aura, the protective field absorbing some of the blow, but the force still sent him sprawling.

“Damien, hold on!” Cassian’s voice rang out as an arrow struck the Titan’s eye, momentarily blinding it.

Damien seized the opportunity, charging forward and delivering a powerful Void Cleave to the Titan’s exposed knee. The attack caused the creature to stumble, its movements slowed.

Lyra appeared at Damien’s side, her blades striking the Titan’s other leg. “We’ve got your back!”

With their combined efforts, they forced the Titan to its knees. Damien channeled all his energy into Ebonfang, delivering a final, devastating strike to the Titan’s core. The creature let out a deafening roar before collapsing, its body dissolving into molten rock.

THE OBELISK’S FALL

With the Titan defeated, Damien turned his attention to the obelisk. Its dark energy pulsed wildly, as if sensing its imminent destruction. Damien raised Ebonfang, channeling his power into the blade.

“Cover me!” he shouted.

Roland and Lyra formed a protective circle around him, fending off any remaining Rift creatures. Cassian continued to provide cover from above, his arrows never missing their mark.

Damien struck the obelisk with Void Cleave, the force of the attack sending cracks through its surface. The obelisk trembled, its energy surging in a desperate attempt to stabilize.

“Again!” Damien shouted, pouring all his strength into a second strike. This time, the obelisk shattered, releasing a blinding explosion of light and shadow. The Rift above it collapsed, and the remaining creatures fell lifeless to the ground.

AFTERMATH

As the dust settled, the team regrouped. The battlefield was quiet, save for the crackling of dying flames. The soldiers cheered, their victory hard-won.

Captain Orin approached Damien, his expression one of awe and respect. “You did it, Lord Damien. The obelisk is destroyed.”

Damien nodded, though his mind was already on the next mission. “One more down,” he said, his voice firm. “But the war is far from over.”

The team rested briefly, their thoughts on the battles ahead. Each victory brought them closer to ending the Rift threat, but it also brought them face-to-face with the growing power of their enemy.

Damien stood apart from the others, Ebonfang resting against his shoulder. He stared into the distance, the weight of his responsibilities heavy on his shoulders.

“We’ll finish this,” he whispered. “No matter the cost.”

The rising shadow loomed ever closer, but Damien and his team would not falter. Together, they would bring the light to the darkest corners of their world.
