Chapter 64: The Shadow’s Trail

Chapter 64: The Shadow’s Trail

Deep in the forest, Damien and Cassian pressed forward, their scouts moving silently through the underbrush. The trail left by the mysterious figure grew colder with each step, but the faint hum of Rift energy kept them on course.

Cassian crouched beside a set of strange, clawed footprints. “These tracks are fresh. They’re leading us somewhere.”

Damien nodded, his hand resting on Ebonfang’s hilt. “We’re close.”

The air grew colder as they advanced, the trees thinning to reveal a clearing bathed in a sickly green light. At its center stood a massive obelisk, covered in glowing runes that pulsed in time with the energy emanating from the ground.

The figure stood before it, its back to them. When Damien and Cassian stepped into the clearing, it turned, revealing a face marked with intricate, glowing runes. Its eyes burned with an unnatural light.

“You’ve come far, Bladebearer,” the figure said, its voice echoing with power. “But you’re too late. The cycle cannot be stopped.”

Damien drew Ebonfang, the blade’s runes flaring. “We’ll see about that.”

THE BATTLE BEGINS

The figure raised a hand, and the obelisk responded, releasing a wave of dark energy that rippled across the clearing. From the shadows emerged a new wave of Rift creatures, their forms twisted and grotesque.

Cassian fired an arrow, striking one of the creatures in the eye. “We’ve got company!”

Damien charged forward, engaging the figure directly. Their weapons clashed, the force of each blow shaking the ground. The figure moved with unnatural speed, its strikes precise and deadly.

The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.

“You fight well,” it said, its tone almost amused. “But you cannot defeat what you do not understand.”

Damien gritted his teeth, activating Phase Step to dodge a powerful strike. He reappeared behind the figure, delivering a devastating Void Cleave. The attack struck true, forcing the figure back.

Meanwhile, Cassian picked off the Rift creatures one by one, his arrows finding their marks even in the chaos.

The figure raised its weapon, channeling energy into the obelisk. The ground beneath them began to crack, and tendrils of dark energy erupted, forcing Damien and Cassian to dodge.

“We need to destroy that obelisk!” Damien shouted.

Cassian nodded, firing an arrow at its base. The impact caused the runes to flicker, but the obelisk remained standing.

Damien focused his energy, channeling it into Ebonfang. “Cover me!”

Cassian provided suppressing fire as Damien charged toward the obelisk. He leapt into the air, bringing Ebonfang down in a powerful strike. The blade’s energy surged through the obelisk, shattering it in a brilliant explosion.

The figure let out a roar of rage as the clearing was engulfed in light. When the dust settled, the figure was gone, leaving only the remnants of the obelisk.

AFTERMATH

Cassian approached, his bow still drawn. “Did we get it?”

Damien sheathed Ebonfang, his eyes scanning the clearing. “For now. But this was just one of their tools.”

He turned to the scouts. “Search the area. We need to find anything that can tell us more about their plans.”

As the team began their work, Damien couldn’t shake the figure’s words. The cycle cannot be stopped.

The war was far from over, and the enemy’s true intentions remained shrouded in shadow. But Damien knew one thing: they would fight, and they would not stop until the Rifts were sealed forever.
