Chapter 4: Fragmented memories pt 2

Zero finds himself standing on the surface of a calm, expansive body of water. The gentle waves lap against his feet, and the soft glow of moonlight bathes the surroundings in a serene ambiance. In the distance, a small glowing light catches his attention, twinkling like a distant star on the horizon. Without a second thought, he instinctively starts running toward it, driven by an inexplicable urge to reach the mesmerizing source.

As he gets closer, the light transforms into a radiant crystal, embedded in the ground like a precious gem. Its multifaceted surface refracts the moonlight, casting ethereal patterns on the water around it. As Zero approaches, the crystal seems to shimmer with the letters "G Z," leaving him puzzled and curious.

Confused but intrigued, Zero ponders aloud, "What is this? It feels like it's calling out to me, but I can't quite place it."

Suddenly, fragments of memories flood Zero's mind, swirling like vivid holographic images. He sees people dressed in black and gold clothing, feeding innocent children gruesome substances in a dark, foreboding place. Among the chaotic scenes, a particular image stands out—a young child who looks just like Zero with red hair, golden eyes, and dark skin.

Realizing the significance of the memories, Zero exclaims, "Is... this me?"

The young child, whom Zero recognizes as his past self, steps forward from the glow of the crystal. "Yes, I'm the younger version of you. It seems you almost died back there, but don't worry. Time slows down in this realm, so you have plenty of time."

Zero's confusion grows as he asks, "Why can't I remember any of this?"

The young Olethros explains that Hera, in order to protect him from the Project War Machine, erased his memories. The project aimed to create a child capable of becoming the perfect soldier, but it escaped, leaving fragments of its power among those who managed to flee.

Curious about the others who possess these fragments, Zero asks, "Who else holds a piece of the War Machine's abilities?"

Olethros mentions individuals named Hera, Blanc, and Tavarious, each with their unique abilities. He assures Zero that Hera is trustworthy, but Tavarious might have a peculiar mindset. As for Blanc, little is known.

Determined to take action and uncover the truth about his past and the fragments, Zero accepts the fragment of growth from the young Olethros, who bids him farewell as the dream realm collapses around them.

As Zero awakens in the real world, his eyes meet Dasu's concerned gaze. The sound of heavy breathing fills the air as Dasu tends to Zero's injuries, his healing abilities working to alleviate the pain. Despite the physical pain, Zero's mind is preoccupied with the revelations from the dream realm.

The ogre, held at bay by Dasu's loyal wolves, still awaits their confrontation, its imposing figure casting a shadow over the forest clearing.

Without hesitation, Zero rises to his feet, a determination burning within him. He locks eyes with Dasu, a silent understanding passing between them. They both know what needs to be done. They exchange a nod, a unspoken agreement to fight side by side.

With synchronized precision, Zero and Dasu launch themselves at the ogre, their movements fluid and calculated. Their combined assault aims to exploit the ogre's weaknesses and overpower its immense strength. However, the ogre proves to be a formidable opponent, retaliating with a ferocious counterattack.

A thunderous blow from the ogre sends shockwaves through the forest, propelling Zero and Dasu backward. They crash through the trees, their bodies colliding with trunks and branches, causing a trail of destruction in their wake. The impact leaves them disoriented and battered, struggling to regain their footing.

Despite the pain, Zero pushes through, his determination unyielding. He channels his inner energy, feeling it surge through his veins, empowering him. With each breath, he charges his arm, infusing his sword with a newfound power. Meanwhile, Dasu demonstrates his unwavering resolve, employing a combination of ice and spear techniques to keep the ogre at bay.

Zero's eyes lock onto the ogre, his focus unwavering. He senses the perfect moment, the culmination of his energy and Dasu's efforts. With a resounding battle cry, Zero releases his charged energy, directing it with pinpoint accuracy. It merges seamlessly with Dasu's relentless assault, creating a blinding tempest of power that engulfs the ogre.

The force of their combined attack overwhelms the ogre, its monstrous form disintegrating within the cataclysmic maelstrom. The surrounding area trembles as the remnants of the ogre scatter, leaving behind a massive crater as evidence of their victory.

Inside the crater, Zero and Dasu lie motionless, their bodies bruised and battered from the intense battle. The wolves that accompanied them carefully carry them back to town, avoiding any further conflict with remaining monsters.

Once they reach the guild house, Hera and Liz spot them, rushing to their aid. They quickly transport Dasu and Zero to the infirmary, where a healer attends to their injuries. The healer informs Hera and Liz that the injuries are severe, requiring time and care to fully heal.

Hera anxiously asks about the extent of their injuries, and the healer reveals that their arms are destroyed, they have second-degree burns, and their legs are significantly damaged. Despite the severity, the healer assures them that with a couple of hours of treatment, they will recover, although waking up may take a while.

Acknowledging the healer's expertise, Liz thanks them, and Hera corrects herself, addressing Dan by his actual name. Dan responds, "It's Dan, and you're welcome."

With the promise of healing ahead, Zero and Dasu rest, their bodies slowly recovering from the intense battle they fought together.
