Gaining a name

After a few minutes of listening to my dad name the other hatchlings, so far there was:

Derk, for the dark green scales along with dad noticing that Derk had a slight control over his own shadow.

Logi, for the blazing orange and red scales and also the small puff of flame that would escape his mouth with every breath.

Vind, for the yellow tinged scales along with the constant gentle breeze that seemed to hug her small lithe body.

There was another green scaled hatchling but this one was more of a dull green and seemed to lack any special traits besides a basic control over the dirt that was around the nest. They named this one Miko however the only change was a slight increase in the manipulation of earth she could move.

And lastly there was Bellator, this one was a brown scaled hatchling that surprisingly did not have an immediate show of any kind of elemental control. But what he did have was super strength as dad witnessed first hand as Bellator broke one of his fingers as he reached down to touch him.

Finally after all my siblings were named came my turn, I was excited because everyone that got a name was visibly strengthened and their bodies seemed to change to fit their name.

Like Vind for instance, It sounds like wind and after she was named her body kept that same lithe frame but her scales became thinner and more aerodynamic. She also gained an immense amount of speed and energy that fit someone named as such.

Bellator on the other hand gained the exact opposite, his scales thickened and bulked as his once small body became bigger and twice my size. Compared to mom and dad, I would think I was about a foot tall on all fours, so that means Bellator was easily 2 ft tall.

The others had similar changes on their body but those two had the most extreme.

But back to me! I noticed it was taking a little bit of time for mom and dad to come up with a name for me. I didn’t show any talent in the elements even after trying to focus and conjure up anything with my mind. I was on the verge of having a migraine from concentrating so hard.

“Maybe he is like Bellator?” Mom asked but dad shook his head.

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“No, he would have already shown something like that already if he did. Maybe he is just a late bloomer, and he was supposed to stay in the egg for a little bit longer?”

They talked it over for a little bit but couldn’t come up with a name that would signify something special about me. To say I was disheartened would be an understatement. I was so excited to get a name and get stronger but this was a huge letdown.

“Maybe we should give him a name anyways honey, he can’t just live his life without one. That would make it so hard for him.”

My eyes widened at that. If I got a random name than wouldn’t that mean I was basically SOL with having anything be special about me? I was reincarnated dammit! I deserve to be special in this new life!”

I was starting to freak out but thankfully grandpa came to my rescue.

“If it’s ok with you two, could I name this one? I know he might not be as outwardly powerful as the others. But I feel that this one has immense potential for the future.”

Both of my parents looked at each other but then smiled before nodding.

“I think that would be a wonderful idea dad. If it’s you then I know this little one will receive a great name.”

“Haha, I wouldn’t go that far son, I just take a shot in the dark and I’m just lucky that most of those shots pan out. Now why don’t you come here little one and we will let your parents say hello to your siblings while we go outside to talk.”

I cocked my head in confusion and so did my parents. This guy knows I can’t talk yet right?

Either way I left the cave with grandpa and he picked me up to show me the scenery.

“What do you think of the view little one? Between the vast forest and plains, all the way to the peak of that dark mountain.”

He smiled down at me as I stared up at him. I was still in awe at the vastness of this world before me and even if I could talk, I wouldn’t know the words to accurately describe the sight. I nodded my head while doing the best smile I could and he chuckled at me, But his smile soon faded as he looked towards the dark, gloomy and cloud covered mountain.

“That mountain Is known as the Void Mountain. It’s called that because of the beasts that invade from the peak and flood our world, they kill and ravage the planet and people before returning to that mountain peak and disappear without a single trace. The last time they appeared was 300 years ago when I was just a young hatchling like yourself.”

300 Years!? Holy hell this guy barely looks over 50 and that’s in anime old man years!

Besides that though I could feel the severity of the situation through his words. He witnessed first hand what these things were capable of and lived….. Just what were these things?

“They are creatures of another world young one. In a cave up there at the very peak is a hole as dark as the moonless sky and from that hole is where those things come from….. They take on many forms and many have abilities that would make even me seem like a child in comparison.”

He shook his head before putting on a smile once again and turned away from the mountain towards the entrance of my home where we could hear the laughter of my parents and the small squeaks from my siblings.

“I came up with a name for you…. What do you think of Stygian?”
