The Light of Day (12)

The city block showed massive signs of wear from the battle. Entire structures had been reduced to rubble and Jinyoung doubted if any windows in the entirety of the area were still in one piece Even with [dash], the dragon was an overwhelming threat in a 1-on-1. Moving one way or another was met with an immediate tail swipe or claw slash. Unlike the Queen Bee, this thing wasn’t just attacking mindlessly. It could see his strategies and adjust its own to counter him. This thing wasn’t just fighting back, it wanted to kill him.

Finally, Jinyoung could see the damaged building and he felt the ache of hope in his chest. The other fighters were positioned on the opposite side of the building while the casters and sharpshooters were positioned at higher points. The trap was set. All that was left was to spring it.

The dragon's screech was deafening. Instinctively, Jinyoung's concentration broke and he covered his ears with his hands. Aside from a few precious seconds, he had kept his distance from the beast which meant his [scan+] couldn't warn him of incoming attacks. But at this distance, he could smell the thing's breath. A mixture of rotten flesh and heat. The dark gold scales had shimmered when they first encountered it, but now any iridescence was replaced with an almost slick texture. As if the scales were covered in something liquid. Something dark and flowing. Something alive.

Hana, bring it down.

When no response came, he repeated himself.

Hana, knock it down now!!

The dragon had reared back, breathing in deep. But Jinyoung's shouts were into the void for all he knew because no one spoke back.

God, the Sin effect, he thought. [Charge+] keeps me from being debuffed, but anyone else in his range is going to be debuffed.

He checked his MP which was dangerously low. [Scan+] and [dash+] had reduced MP costs, but at this point, he only had a few charges left. Any more than that and he'd be afflicted by mana sickness.

Willow! I need you to hit the building with an [arcane shot]!

Again, no response. But a large click refocused his attention to the monster in front of him. He could see the conflagration starting at the back of its throat. Only a few seconds before...

THOOM!

The [arcane bolt] let out a high-pitched whistle as it arced overhead before it exploded against the weakened structure. Then another, and another. And then a volley of explosions hit the building's weakened points. On the other side of the structure, the fighters cut through steel beams and columns and, when necessary, grabbed and lifted to provide leverage.

The building leaned over with a groan as metal and concrete bent. Then that groan turned into a cacophony of screeching as 100,000 tons of steel, concrete and glass came crashing down. The dragon never stood a chance. It was simply too big and the alleyway was too boxed in. Ten foot long steel girders crashed down like spears alongside hundred pound chunks of granite, marble and concrete bashed and battered everything on the ground. The dust rose up like a blanket and obscured his view and filled his lungs.

"Where's the Guild Master?" Hana asked. Most of the players were accounted for except Muho.

Willow pointed back across the alley. "Jinyoung told him to go for cover back there. Someone should check in on him. His injuries were pretty bad."

Hana nodded. She took a look around at the chaos. The structure was only 25 stories, but it had come down hard. Luckily, only the base was badly damaged (before they knocked it over) so it fell in one piece.

After surveying the damage, Hana spoke. "We should head out and look for the Guild Master before heading out-”

“Wait.”

Willow and Hana looked at Jinyoung, but his attention was elsewhere. A weakly blinking light drew his focus.

“It’s a hidden quest,” he confirmed before turning to face his party. “Should we?”

Hana nodded. “Do it.”
