Chapter 2: Dust

The Class of 1S (Dust)

The day went through, and we didn’t really do much other than getting to know each other.

In the homeroom of 1S, we had the whole group of me, plus a few others, like Luna, the Empress, and even Madeline, who turned out to be Ryuu’s sister…

It’s a small world, after all, I guess?

But still, we all went home, Luna helping me through the journey, and I got assaulted with questions about my day that seemed more like an interrogation for deciding if the school would be allowed to continue to exist.

I hope I passed everything off well enough to give it a chance, at least… I wouldn’t like to lose the place to meet my others so soon.

But now, it’s time for school again. Around noon, Luna carries me off to the school, her magic the main thing supporting me throughout the journey. Of course, I do try to lighten her burden by asking my mother to put on the heat shield in the morning, and I attempt to circulate my own mana through it to buff it a little bit.

Even so, I take up to three cooling sessions on the way to get to school. It’s terrible.

“So, I could be wrong… but did the school look this large from the outside?” I asked, having just entered the doors, Luna next to me.

“What do you mean?” She asked, looking over at me, before looking around. “Nothing seems to be any larger…”

“Tardis School?” I asked nobody in particular.

“What?”

“It’s nothing…”

I sighed.

The school certainly did seem larger than it appeared to be from the outside. Stepping into it, it seemed almost thrice as large, the hallway already seeming to take up almost the same amount of space that the entire school seemed to be from the outside.

“I mean, if you don’t see anything, then I guess it’s fine…” I trailed off, thinking a bit longer about it before leaving it be.

“Let’s just go to class, I guess.” I sighed.

"Come on, why not?!” Shiro yelled.

“Could you just shut up? My reasons don’t matter, you’re not getting one.” Empress retorted.

“But you gave Gen one!”

“That’s different.”

“Only because you poisoned him beforehand!”

“Well…”

“I can poison myself, would that be enough?” Shiro seemed desperate.

“I mean, if you’re willing to go that far…” Empress seemed a bit intrigued by his devotion, but I simply sighed as Shiro pulled out an empty bottle, and mystery plants from his pockets.

“Shiro, restrain yourself.” I came in, and spoke my part.

“But why? You want this just as much as I do.” He complained, stopping, but not putting his materials away.

“I know. However, don’t bother somebody to the point of injuring yourself.”

“Sera can just heal me. He’s literally right over there!” He swung his arm through the air, in the general direction of Sera, who looked over upon hearing his name.

I waved him over before continuing.

“That doesn’t mean anything. You shouldn’t hurt the body you’ve been given.” I lightly tapped his head with my palm.

“Tch, I guess you’re right…” He slowly put the ingredients away.

“So, how long until class starts?” Sera asked, joining our little group.

“Umm… maybe ten minutes? Achelois isn’t even here yet, after all.” Empress commented, seeming happy that the topic changed.

“Alright… so we’re faced with a terrible dilemma…” I spoke, my voice in a faked seriousness.

All my personas went deathly silent, making even more of a solemn mood.

“What… what is it?” Luna asked, seeming to be worried about it.

“How do we spend this time…?” I spoke, my voice muffled as I tried to hold back from laughing.

I could see Luna’s worried face go from confused to just plain bored.

“Just that?”

“Yeah, pretty much. I don’t know what to do for the next ten minutes. Do you have an idea?”

“No… I was just going to go sit down and wait quietly.”

“Nah, too boring. I’m not up for that type of boredom.”

“What type of boredom is that?”

“The optional kind…” I stared up at the ceiling.

“Ooh…” An idea hit me, and I began to smile. Ryuu, looking at me, began to chuckle.

“Come on now, what’re we going to do?” He laughed.

“Angelica!” I called, turning over to her.

“Hmm?” She looked up from her book, before sighing. She looked down, probably memorizing the page number, before closing the book and coming over.

“So, you were working with buffs, right? Tell me how it works.”

“It’s just the normal way that mana works. Solidify wanting to help people, or boost an attribute, and then let it go.” She seemed bored, sending a wistful glance back to her book.

“So… Like this?” I held my hand out, and gathered my mana towards it, breathing in a sharp breath as the image formed.

A burst of wind tore through the room, just barely not hitting my face. I felt a bit of blood drip from my left shoulder, though.

“Hahaha!” I laughed, taking my clothes away from my wound as I rejoiced.

“What?!” A voice yelled.

“Oh, it’s nothing, Achelois.” I called out to her.

“What did you do to tear a hole through the wall?”

“And my arm!”

“And your… What the hell?!” She yelled.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

I sent a glance to Sera. My arm was whole a few seconds later. The room was deathly silent.

“So… what did you…?” Achelois attempted to ask again.

“Buffed the wind.”

“You… buffed the wind? To make that hole?” She seemed incredulous.

“Well, to be precise, I buffed ‘whatever was in front of my hand.’ I wanted to know what happened when you used a strong buff without a specific target.” I looked to the wall behind me. The hole was at least a few feet in diameter.

“And now I know.” I said blandly.

“You… buffed the air, though?” Achelois seemed more interested than displeased, now.

“It would seem so, yeah. Buffed speed and power as much as I could.”

I was a bit confused, though. Even though I buffed it so much, my mana wasn’t even half empty, which was saying quite a lot, since I really don’t have much.

Well, I got an idea for another spell, but the teacher is here now… I guess I’ll try it out later…

“Alright, well, I was going to wait another two or three minutes, but since I’m here, I guess we’ll start class.”

Now, if I were to go through everything she said, it’d take multiple hours and I’m not up for that. After all, she went through the entire history of the world, from the very beginning.

So instead I made a spell for it, and here’s a general workabout of what she said.

History of the world in Full terms. (Shortened version under it)

Beginning: 247,876,437 years ago.

The Goddess of life was born. Her instincts forced her to look down upon the ashen world below her, and bestow it with life. Her hands descended and sculpted the mountains, dug the valleys, traced the riverbeds. Her breath became the air. Her sweat became the water. Her blood imbued the planet with a strange energy.

Then, she created life. She planted the seeds of life with a power she herself didn’t quite understand. She formed the races she had thought of, careful and precise on each of them. She divided them, each on different sections of her planet. She helped each and every one to survive.

But, a chain reaction of disasters was all it took to destroy each and every living being on the planet. All her work, gone in an instant.

She forged them again. Stronger. More intelligent. She imbued small amounts of her power into them, leaving herself with still seemingly limitless amounts of power remaining.

Then, she accidentally hit the world with her elbow. The planet swerved off it’s course, directly towards the sun. She saved it, but all life had already died from the heat.

Once more, she forged her races. She divided her seemingly limitless amount of power evenly between each of them.

And so, The world was created. The Goddess fell into a slumber, but not before letting her power spew forth, creating many beings of a lesser power. These were new goddesses and servants. It took them a while, but they adapted to their existence and began to take care of The Goddess of life and the planet she watched over.

100 mil Years ago

Everybody died. A flood destroyed all life on the planet, forcing the many goddesses to start once again on their creations… The third delay in the start of the world.

75 mil Years ago

Life was once again restored. The official ‘beginning’ of the progressive era. The beginning of all advancement. Sedentary populations began to sprout. Farming began so people finally didn't have to roam around to find foods. Another noticeable thing is that different species began to come in contact with one another. Some encounters went friendly with the purpose of bettering both species but some ended with a more bloody end.

50 mil Years ago

Magic was discovered. Magic circles were beginning to be drawn into stones. Found much later as still-working fossils. Imbued with an unknown energy, unlike mana. Perhaps related to the start of monsters?

25 mil Years ago

It took them long enough but the people of this world finally started to accept magic into their everyday lives instead of fearing the lucky few who were imbued with it. They figured out how to use magic to better themselves and found out that magic could be used to simplify usually daunting tasks. Agriculture acceleration, pain killers for warriors and for people giving birth, the creation of magical weaponry, the possibilities were literally endless.

10 mil Years ago

God of Vepha was born. After meeting the Goddess of life, his role forced him to tear off pieces of his own flesh to create monsters on the planet. His tears flooded his races as he created them, forcing him to make more. For at least 50,000 years, this continued. Then, he lost his sense of pain and was able to stop crying.

The monsters that were born then were the bane of all races. The God of Vepha could not stop them from destroying his own lover’s creations.

1 mil Years ago

The races were becoming slightly endangered, not having enough power to defy the monsters that terrorized them. The goddesses under the Goddess of life were forced to intervene. Mana flooded the world from their veins, allowing magic circles to be removed and all magics to be utilized much easier.

100,000 Years ago

All the races had settled into spaces. Alliances formed. War waged. Kingdoms were erected. The monsters were nearing a stalemate, as even small villages were able to defend themselves most of the times.

75,000 Years ago

The God of Vepha began tearing into his flesh once more. His blood poured forth, creating a dark miasma that tore into the trees and water, corrupting everything it touched.

The monsters grew intelligent. They began planning, selecting leaders and strategists. It was a horrendous time for the races, as many of them had grown lax in training.

50,000 Years ago

A monster queen was born. A natural leader, and gifted with a strength unmatched by anything else in the world. With her existence, the Goddess of life awoke. She bent down on a baby from each of the races, and gifted them with large amounts of power. These were heroes. 13 vs a whole race. It was an all-out war.

It was simply a question of who might win.

25,000 Years ago

These 13 had continued to fight against the monsters in the full view of everyone else. They had been fighting for so long that they had been praised as immortal gods amongst men.

10,000 Years ago

The war still raged on. Neither side budging in terms of relative strength nor will to win. Both the God of Vepha and the Goddess of Life were incapable of interfering with this fight, no matter how much they wished this deadly war to end. This was now all in the hands of their servants.

1,000 Years ago

3 of the heroes died, taking heavy blows, but they did not fall. They had died long before taking wounds. Their bones continued to fight like puppets on strings.

She was getting impatient as well, and began recklessly sending out stronger monsters.

Her lifespan was nearing it’s end.

The Vepha Queen knew she had to end this soon. She only had a few hundred years left of her life. She had to destroy the heroes once and for all. To protect something precious to her.

And she would. She halted the heroes from doing any real damage for a whole hundred years. But, then, she came down with a terrible disease. She was unable to give orders. And so, the Heroes slaughtered the confused monsters, and continued towards the palace that the Vepha queen erected.

When she had recovered, it was too late. She was stronger than all thirteen heroes combined, but she was still unable to damage them. Age had the most effect out of any attack they could have thrown at her.

One by one, the heroes took damage. Their skeletons continued to fight on, without fear or pain. They seeked something beyond her. Beyond her attacks, they continued spewing the most damage they could throw.

The Eternal War ended. The Vepha Queen finally collapsed upon the ground and breathed her final breath. The thirteen heroes, now fulfilling their purpose, finally were able to die in peace and were regarded as the 13 Heroes of the Eternal War.

But who really ended up the victor? What was it they were searching for, in the end? And if they found it, why did they persist? Why did they continue past death?

What motivated them to attack the Vepha Queen?

Learning that they were very close to extinction, the races of the world despite their differences decided that there was no point in fighting any longer. Occasionally there were disagreements amongst the people but remembering the war immeasurably resolved them.

In the end, a resolute peace was eventually achieved.

University of race-equal magics opened. All races could come into a special teleportation system to arrive at the school in the sky. It taught magic to all the young children without discrimination.

Finally, after 150 years the populations of Ash were steadily increasing once again. The once-battered kingdoms were coming back to its former glory and the hierarchies of each race were coming back into fruition. It had seemed that everything was back in order... for now, at least.

End of spoiler

To put it into a simpler and more compact version for those of you who, like me, didn’t want to read that…

In the beginning, the goddess of life created the world. Something fucked up, and everything died.

Now, this happened three times.

We’re on the fourth version of this world.

To put it in a general sense, magic came to be just after this world was created, and the goddess of life went into a deep sleep. Soon after, the god of monsters came through and started filling the world with Vepha.

Of course, the life on the world was utterly decimated, reacting much too slowly to gain any sort of foothold, and most of the races were brought all the way back into small towns that were pretty densely populated and much easier to defend.

Eventually, they learned how to fight against the Vepha, and the world settled down, the races under the goddess of life having regained what they could, and constantly driving the monsters back.

But this didn’t last long. The era of general peace lasted about 25,000 years before the monsters stopped attacking for about 100.

It seemed like a miracle.

But then they came back, and with fully fledged armies. Leaders, intelligent vepha who came up with tactics to wage war with, so on and so forth.

The strongest one was born a ‘Vepha Queen’, and her power awoke the goddess of life, whom, upon seeing what had happened, gifted a baby of each of the races a large portion of her power, and it became a battle of thirteen against the entire race of Vepha.

45,000 years later, the heroes already nothing more than skeletons, they won against the Vepha queen, only because her long lifespan was also reaching its end.

Then, about 100 years ago, the school came about, and has been developing since.

Whew, that was a lot of effort. And that was the shortened version, too… Her entire speech took just under an hour, and then another 15 minutes or so of questions and explaining.

Now, finally, the bell rang for the next class, and I was released from my hell.

“Wait, what class do I even have next?” I asked nobody in particular.
