Chapter 14 - Without mercy

Chapter 14 - Without mercy

Pov Logan

As the blood spread across the ground, I stood up, feeling a strange sense of calm amidst the past violence. Beside me, the bear stood, its jaws still dripping with blood. It sniffed my charred arm, seemingly assessing the damage.

Suddenly, wild cries pierced the air, breaking the relative silence of the forest. A pack of twenty bears emerged, quickly surrounding me. Their growls echoed around me, creating a menacing symphony. Each member of the pack bared its teeth, ready to pounce on me.

As the tension rose, a louder, authoritative growl was heard. The bear I had saved stepped forward, positioning itself between me and the pack. She let out a powerful growl, imposing silence and order. The other bears froze, their growls ceasing immediately.

She approached me, her eyes meeting mine with a silent understanding. Then, a bright window appeared in front of me, floating in the air. Its borders shimmered, and golden letters formed on its surface.

“Yes.” I said without hesitation.

: Chief of the Garonne Bears.

“Evolution conditions, that's interesting. But do they understand my orders? That's the most important thing.” (Logan)

I looked at them waiting for me to say something, so I might as well try.

“Live hidden; I will come for you when the time comes.” (Logan)

They looked at me and left as the former pack leader bowed before slipping away.

“So they understand when I speak to them.” I said, looking at my charred, completely black arm.

I headed back to the small village at a good pace. About forty-five minutes had passed since I had left the mountains. When I arrived, I saw Aria still sleeping in the hammock, swayed by the gentle breeze. I had to wake her up gently.

“Aria." I murmured, shaking the hammock slightly.

She rubbed her eyes and looked at me, then let out a small cry upon seeing my condition. My face and clothes were covered in blood, and my burned arm hung at my side, the pain constantly reminding me of the fight.

“What happened to you?” she exclaimed, alarmed.

“It's nothing, just a little incident.” I replied, trying to reassure her.

“But your arm... doesn’t it hurt?” she said, touching it gently.

“Ah! If you press, of course it hurts.” I grimaced.

“Oh, sorry! But we need to get you to a healer quickly.” she insisted.

“You forget we have a quest to complete.” I retorted firmly.

“But with your arm in this state!” she protested.

“Listen, it will be fine. We still have some time. I'll buy some bandages, and most importantly, you say nothing about this.” I ordered, trying to maintain control of the situation.

“Alright.” she agreed, though reluctantly.

I quickly washed up and changed clothes. We then went to the nearest shop. I bought bandages, wet them, and carefully wrapped them around my arm, covering the burned part from my fingers to my shoulder. I tried moving my fingers. They moved, but with great difficulty, as did my entire arm.

Once done, we headed to the meeting point. Alfred's group was waiting for us at the forest entrance, impatience visible on their faces.

“You're late.” (Lewis)

“Sorry, I overslept a bit, it’s my fault.” (Logan)

“Why is your right arm covered in bandages?” (Alfred)

Aria gave me a worried look but remained silent, respecting my wish not to reveal the true state of my arm.

“I had a little problem, nothing serious.” (Logan)

“Alright, let's enter the forest. Young lady, stay behind us.” said Alfred with a smile.

The quest in question involved eliminating High Orcs that had suddenly appeared. They had attacked the village, killing several D-rank adventurers before establishing their own village deep in the forest. In short, it was a quick subjugation mission. High Orcs are an evolution of regular Orcs, generally around level 70.

We advanced cautiously through the forest, our senses on high alert, toward the area where they were last seen. Quickly, we came across a small group of three High Orcs patrolling around their village.

“Lewis, Reinhard!” called Alfred, giving them precise orders.

Lewis and Reinhard rushed to draw the attention of the High Orcs. Once they succeeded, they bombarded them with a massive fire attack, severely burning the Orcs.

“That must not be pleasant.” I thought, recalling the pain in my burned arm.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

Alfred then emerged, quickly finishing off the Orcs without giving them time to react.

“See, that's how we do it.” mocked Lewis, throwing me a smug look.

Without responding, I disappeared from his sight, sensing imminent danger. A new High Orc had appeared, ready to attack. I intervened just in time, using my magic to make multiple earth spikes rise and pierce the Orc, immobilizing it for good.

“And that's how I do it.” I said, looking at Lewis with a hint of defiance in my voice.

“Thank you.” said Alfred, grateful, thanking me for saving his companion.

I wasted no time and quickly moved away from them to join Aria, ensuring her safety.

“Reinhard, did you see what I saw?” asked Alfred, his tone grave and full of implications.

“Earth and wind magic.” replied Reinhard, observing Logan with increased attention.

“He used wind magic to increase his speed and parry the attack unconventionally before killing the Orc by impaling it without any problem. Reinhard, do you think the same as me?” continued Alfred, his eyes gleaming with interest.

“The magic shield skill.” concluded Reinhard.

“An excellent ability, and above all, he couldn’t use his right arm. I don’t know where he got that injury, but it’s good for us.” said Alfred, a greedy smile stretching his lips.

“Let’s execute the plan. This bastard is starting to get on my nerves.” intervened Lewis, joining them.

“Yes, be ready.” ordered Alfred, a malicious smile forming on their faces as they looked at Logan in the distance, accompanied by Aria.

Arriving at the Orc village, they put in place a simple but effective strategy. The three men launched a massive fire attack into the air, aiming directly at the village. The flames descended, engulfing everything in their path.

“Let’s go!” shouted Alfred as the High Orcs emerged from the burning village.

Logan rushed towards the Orcs, ready to fight. However, Alfred and his companions stayed behind, broad smiles on their faces. They struck Aria violently, sending her flying to the ground. She landed near Logan, her face covered in blood.

“Since you like this stupid girl, you can die with her.” said Alfred, finally revealing his true face to Logan.

Logan found himself surrounded by about thirty High Orcs, all ready to kill him. Aria, slowly regaining consciousness, clung to Logan’s clothes.

“Run, leave me here…” she murmured, her voice weak and tinged with pain, as blood flowed from her head.

Logan stood up and carried Aria in his arms like a knight carrying a princess.

“What are you doing?” she asked, surprised.

“From the beginning, it was never about abandoning you.” he replied with determination.

Touching the ground, Logan made a circular earth barrier rise around them, protecting them from the Orcs who were striking with all their might to destroy it. The blows resonated on the barrier, each impact echoing like a war drum.

While the Orcs struck, he closed his eyes to concentrate:

“I’ve only recovered 60/210 of my mana. There were about twenty Orcs striking the barrier, ten others waiting a bit further. The first time I arrived in this world, I killed goblins. So I’ll kill you the same way!” (Logan)

Outside the protection, the ground suddenly collapsed, making the High Orcs fall into a pit where they were impaled on stone spikes.

Logan broke through the protection, still holding Aria in his arms. She looked, amazed, at all the High Orcs dead in the pit. The remaining Orcs rushed towards them, but their physical attacks were useless against Logan's newfound power. Suddenly, a bright light dazzled him, forcing him to dodge as he spotted Alfred and his group in the distance.

"I see." murmured Logan, quickly analyzing the situation.

Logan used more of his computational power to increase his speed.

"By using vector control, I reduce air resistance and apply physical forces on my body. This allows me to move faster." Logan explained to himself.

He picked up one of the giant swords left by the dead Orcs and, with his increased speed, sliced the heads of seven High Orcs in one fluid motion. As he prepared to parry an attack from an Orc, a flame attack headed towards him. Simultaneously, he felt his speed slow down as the ground had been transformed into deep mud.

"Another trick from that bastard Alfred!" Logan cursed.

He made a small jump, just enough to dodge, letting the Orc be incinerated in his place. Landing nimbly, Logan quickly killed the remaining two Orcs. However, he hadn't noticed that Alfred and his group had encircled him.

"Do you think you can escape us?" Alfred taunted, a cruel smile on his lips.

Logan turned towards them, holding Aria firmly against him.

"I won't let you harm us any further." he declared with cold determination.

POV LOGAN

A massive fire attack headed towards me, and I knew I couldn't dodge it while carrying Aria. Urged by the urgency of the situation, I threw Aria into the air as hard as I could and erected earth walls to protect myself from the flames. The flames roared against the barrier, the intense heat crackling around me.

Jumping over the walls, I launched the sword with deadly precision. It flew through the air and severed Reinhard's head, a burst of blood accompanying the fall of his body.

"Reinhard!" screamed Lewis, his face twisting in rage at seeing his lifeless companion's body collapse to the ground.

As I descended, another flame attack burst forth, this time launched by Lewis, mad with rage.

"Return to sender." I said, reversing the flames' trajectory with my vector magic. The flames rushed back towards Lewis at even greater speed.

"What? No!" he screamed before being incinerated by his own attack, his cries mingling with the crackling flames.

Only Alfred remained. Recovering Aria, I descended gently to the ground, preparing for the final confrontation.

"How did you do that?" asked Alfred, his voice trembling as he fell to the ground, realizing he was now alone and powerless.

"Answer my question, and I'll let you leave alive. Why did you want to kill me?" I asked, my gaze piercing.

"I have the plunder ability. I can steal a skill from a dead body." Alfred confessed, his face pale.

"I see, so you intended to kill and plunder me." I responded, understanding his intentions.

"I told you what you wanted to know, right? Let me go now," he said, trembling, hoping I would keep my word.

"I lied. Did you really think you would leave here alive after trying to kill me?" I said coldly.

"Bastard!" Alfred screamed, fear and hatred mingling in his eyes.

I moved quickly in front of him and thrust the sword into his stomach, then pulled it laterally, disemboweling him. Blood spurted as he slowly bled out, his life ebbing away in a long and terrible agony.

"You have only yourself to blame." I said, watching him bleed out, my eyes mercilessly fixed on him.
