Power in the Wrong Hands

Power in the Wrong Hands

The steed walks on the rocky pavement down the hill. It neighs as Cadmus looks up and wonders in the beauty of Miria's wonders. The Temple of the Arts is below a huge island floating in the air with a castle on top of it. All people know that the shadows are the strongest in the temple where Cadmus hopes to find help in using his newly founded power. They walk on as they get to a stable, Cadmus gets off his horse and talks to the keeper, he keeps it short, takes his equipment with him and pats his horse before he goes off for the temple to introduce himself with "the eagles" known as the masters of the arts.

He walks through the streets of the village, not much activity to do here, most of the people who live here have been locals for a long time, he enters the huge temple that is dimly lit inside, some guards stand at the entrance and a group of four people sit in the center of a great hall. One of them opens his eyes and looks at Cadmus the moment he steps inside. He stands up as the other ones remain sitting.

"One of The Brave Ones enters our temple, what brings you here?" Cadmus walks up to the young looking master, considering he has lived for a hundred years keeping his body in shape by manipulating his inner darkness.

"I need your assistance with something, a strange darkness we could not seem to figure out at the fortress, it would prove to be a great asset for our cause."

"At Katketty? If your old man could not figure out what it is, even we will be of not much help to you."

"This thing is not exactly in our profession so to say." The man looks confused and waits for Cadmus to continue.

Cadmus sighs and puts his sword down away from him. "Tell your guards to attack me. Trust me!" Cadmus looks at the man sincerely as the man shrugs his shoulders and nods at one of the guards. The guard looks at the other one and walks up to Cadmus, but seems concerned.

The man chuckles and looks at the guard. "Oh please attack him you don't think he is defenceless do you? This man would be protecting the whole city alone if he would not be bored by such a job."

The guard swings his long axe at Cadmus as his protective cloud of shadow pushes the guard away with great force, pushing him completely off his feet. The three others stand up, Cadmus looks at the man.

"I did not use any signs or words and without those i cannot use the arts, you know this."

The man thinks deeply as he paces around, he goes back to the other ones as Cadmus gets his sword back up. The guard who got knocked down is slowly being woken up by the other one as he looks confused as to what happened. They keep talking while Cadmus walks to entrance patting the guard on his back.

He looks on the streets of the small city, it's sky reaching mountains that are the tallest one in the region, their tops covered by clouds giving the city a natural defence. There are only a few tight roads you can enter and leave, the city was never too prosperous so it never became a war target for these reasons.

The group stops talking and the man who previously talked with Cadmus invites him back.

"So? What is it? Can i somehow be able to control it completely?" Cadmus asks as he walks up to them.

"Only if you are the one who is meant to control it, this is a great power Cadmus, if you cannot prove yourself worthy for it we will have to seal it away from you!"

"So be it."

"Where did you get this from might i ask?" One of them asks curiously.

"It is from the essence of the beasts, we sealed the darkness within them in vials and Rufa mixed them together to create... this. It seems to act mostly on it's own, even in daylight making it very useful for us in fights. Rufa ordered me to come here so you could teach me how to use it to it's full potential."

They all look at each other and think deeply before the one in front looks at Cadmus.

"Come to the side with me." He tells Cadmus and walks away from the group. He takes Cadmus' hands and closes his eyes.

"Close your eyes and think about your deepest desires."

"My deepest- you know we do not seek such values."

"I know you don't, but if you are the one meant to wield this much power you should be able to access your deepest thoughts and use them to forge this power into what you want!"

Cadmus looks confused, but closes his eyes and tries to think against his teachings, about his past, before becoming one of the brave ones, his childhood. He sees his little self watch the soldiers march on distant roads, his father among them being led to a battle that is for the king's own satisfaction. He feels anger and sadness, he remembers why when the beasts came he knew what he should do along with the few of his comrades. Instead of fighting a battle to quench a king's thirst for more land, they should fight monsters who seek to kill all humans.

Suddenly a huge flash filled the room as the orb exploded between Cadmus and the man. They both got pushed backwards, but the master even more, falling down on his back. Cadmus immediately stands up and draws his sword just to see the black cloud in front of him. He puts his sword away as the other masters run to aid the one on the ground up.

"I-Impossible... so the legends were true... seal it away immediately!" The man yells as one of them rushes to another room then comes back with a steel orb in his hand with a small hole on it with a plug hanging off at the neck. With his other hand he places it in front of the orb and chants as the dark cloud slowly moves inside the bottle.

Cadmus looks disappointed as the man takes the orb away and the wounded one walks in front of him and sighs.

"I'm sorry Cadmus, i know it's not what you came here for, but this great destructive power cannot be let loose in this world. You do not have the capabilites to control it, neither do we. All we can do is seal it away and hope for the one who turns the light into darkness to claim such power."

"Oh come on, that is not a prophecy! It's a story parents tell their kids to fall asleep! There is no such person who can control all darkness like your prophecies say they do."

The man sighs deeply and turns around and walks back to the center of the hall and sits down. Cadmus makes his way out of the temple only to get to the entrance of it.

"If you meet a lady who happens to fall into the description of the one in the.. child stories, please tell her to visit us, would you?"

Cadmus grunts and walks out the temple and makes his way to the nearest inn. Many bystanders watch Cadmus after hearing the explosion in the temple, but seem mostly calm as they see Cadmus walk away unharmed. He opens the door and the gossiping stops for a second, only for whispering to follow it, but he is already used to that. He walks up to the barkeeper and leans on the counter.

"Give me a short one please, and your latest rumors, i notice the tavern is quite the talkative place." Cadmus told the bartender as he looked around the people as some of them keep their eyes on him in awe.

"It surely is, but sadly not the rumors that make you a living Hunter, only ones about the war." The bartender pours a drink for Cadmus as he scoffs. "It seems when war comes people care about their politics more than true monsters huh?" Said the bartender. He smiled agreeing with the lady, payed for the drink and walked out the inn as he did a sentence from one of the people caught his ears.

"I hear that even the Dragon appeared to join the battle in Sverdsin, he killed a group of the bears near Riverfall." He shrugged it off and shook his head, but the thought did not leave his mind as he walked to the stables. Perhaps the prophecies were true after all? Does the dragon really exist? Maybe the master knew more than what he told Cadmus? Or are they just mere stories spread around by old women in villages. The only ones who know for sure are the ones who go beyond the stories itself.
