Chapter 6: Avalon Royal School

Oh yes I forget to tell you the school name since it is so obvious to me.  

The school name is Avalon Royal School.

My dorm is quite good. We have three beds and one dining table.

We also have three cupboards, one for each of us.

My roommate is Aditya, an earth dwarf, like all dwarf he is quite short. He has dark skin since he is an earth dwarf. A mountain dwarf has lighter skin. He is very quiet but seems a nice guy. He is 7 years old. His parent has a high position in the dwarven blacksmith guild.

My other roommate is Li Zheng Cao. He is a human from Shang Kingdom. He is very talkative. He is also 7 years old and son of a prince in the Shang kingdom. His appearance is pretty much like earth Asian people. He is very friendly and talkative. Too much talkative in my opinion, I wonder if Aditya’s quiet personality is due to his exposure to Cao's constant talking.

Oh, I should mention that despite their location (eastern and western continent), the human in this world is pretty much the same. There are dark skin, white skin, yellow skin, brown hair, blonde hair, black hair, etc. Pretty much the same like earth human and they are not limited to territory like on earth.

In the Eastern continent, Arnizani continent, we have several big kingdoms and countless small kingdoms, principality and tribal societies. The big powers are:

1.       Dwarven kingdom of Majajaya. The largest dwarven kingdom. They are living in the mountain of the north, in the border of the northern wilderness.

2.       Dwarven kingdom of Suryalengka. Although the king is a dwarf but they have a lot of princes from other races. They have elves, humans, demons, even some beastman. They are well known as a loose kingdom. The king has little influence outside his personal province. This is Aditya’s home kingdom.

3.       Demon Kingdom of Frozen Islands in the north. Reputed as having the best sailors and fierce fighters. It is more like confederacy as the tribe heads are mostly independent. The king is rotated among the tribe head once every 2 years.

4.       Elven Kingdom of Avalon which boasted the best school in the world though there are a lot who disagree with that. There is no doubt that Avalon Royal School is the best school in overall magic. Avalon territory is stretch thin in the western coast. The southern border is with orc plain and the northern border is with the wild north, vampire kingdom and werewolf domain.

5.       Human Kingdom of Shang. They are a landlocked nation but they have rich ore resources. Their main export comes from mining. This is Cao’s home kingdom. They are at war with The Twin Suns Kingdom. They have a dream of uniting the human kingdoms. No doubt that the ambition will not stop there though.

6.       Human Khanate of the Twin Suns. Like Suryalengka, they have a mixture of races in their principality except the demon race. They are famous for their mounted archers and fast cavalry. Their king is called a Khan due to their extreme hatred of the Shang Kingdom; they invent a new title for their king.

7.       Beastman Kingdom of Zoroaca. They are a secluded kingdom in the Far East. Little is known about them since their territory is a heavy rainforest and they don’t exactly welcome strangers.

8.       Orcish tribes of the south. Unlike the western orcs, they love to wage war among themselves. They dwell in the southern grassland and dessert. They are not a kingdom but no kingdom dare to encroach their natural territory since that usually unite the orcs against the invader and believe me that their number and prowess is not something to look down.

Beside the 6 kingdoms, 1 khanate and 1 orcish territory there are a lot of small independent kingdom, principality and tribes. The most prominent of them are the vampire kingdom in the northern territory.

Unlike the vampires stories in my previous world, here they breed and eat like other normal races. They also have sensitive skin and eyes that suffer under direct sunlight. They are usually far less strong in the daylight.

The vampires have [pheromone] and [mesmerizing] skill. The [pheromone] skill is only effective to the opposite sex. A constant exposure to [pheromone] can make the target lose their sanity. This is the main reason why they are shunned by other races.

[Mesmerizing] skill is used for hunting and escaping. The skill confuses the enemies for a short period that enable them to deliver a killing blow or escape from battle. This is the reason for the rumor of vampire’s inhuman speed and bat or smoke transformation. Oh the vampires love bats, they just don't transform into one. They usually keep them as pets much like our earth human keep dogs and cats as pets.

They also have a special skill that enables them to regenerate by drinking fresh blood of their enemies. They also have a tendency to drink blood instead of water even though they can survive without drinking blood. Another reason to hate the vampires.

Among the major races, only the elves and the beastman are tolerant to the vampires. The elves have higher sensitivity in hearing and smell that enables us to discern the vampire’s pheromone and mesmerizing skill so they are not very effective to us (since we are aware that we are affected by it). The beastman have their own pheromone and highly resistant to the vampire’s pheromone.

Other races are hostile to the vampires and the feeling is mutual. There are a lot of histories of “holy war” against the vampires. Some people even compare the vampire with the succubus which is a very grave insult to the vampires. The situation is calm though after the peace treaty between the vampires and the six great races was signed.

Oh by the way, I gain skill [Adaptability] from cao’s rumbling and [expert hand] from observing Aditya later on. Aditya has a hobby to make delicate dolls. I think he is the otaku of this world. He claims that it is good training for blacksmithing though.

Today is my test day. I go to the headmistress room at 08.00 in the morning and knock the door.

Zephira = “Come in.”

Me = “Good morning Zephira.”

Zephira = “You are late.”

I froze at that.

Me = “Isn’t the school usually start at 08.00.”

Zephira = “It is but I didn’t tell you what time to come today, right?”

Browsing my memory I remember she didn’t.

Me = “No, you didn’t. I just assume the same time as the school open.”

Zephira = “Indeed that is your mistake. It is my first lesson to you. You need to clarify everything before agreeing to something.”

Me = “Yes, Zephira. Thank you for your lesson.”

Grinning Zephira says “As your punishment, I have prepared a more advance test for you.”

That must be her intention since the beginning.

To put things short, I spent time until 15.00 to complete my entire test. We have a break once every two hours for 15 minutes and lunch break for half an hour.

The math test is started from something easy like calculation of triangle and circle. Later on it dwells on building size calculation and practical use which is something similar like accounting. I have no difficulties though since I am good at math back at earth.

The other tests are basically a cake walk. Having read so many books I am easily answer the subject in the history, geography, politics, languages (elven and foreign), natural science, herbology, lores(something about the stories of the divines, stories of creations, etc), magic knowledge, etiquette and general knowledge which is much more than usual since basic school (age between 6-15) is usually only have mandatory basic math, basic magic knowledge, history, basic language and general knowledge. The other subjects are optional.

She brought me a bento for lunch which is quite delicious. While I am doing my tests, she checked my finished answer. Oh yes, we usually eat 3-4 times a day depending on your habit.

The night time in this world is varying between 8-12 hours per day depending on seasons and location.

Finally she finishes correcting my tests.

Zephira = “That is impressive; you score perfectly for almost all of the subjects. There are a few mistakes in the natural science and general knowledge but overall you are very good.”

Well that is just as expected since this world’s science level is considerably lower level than my previous world’s science. Perhaps because a lot of people are more interested in researching magic than science? In this world where magic and gods are real some natural events that can be explained by logic and science might be seen as magic or act of gods.

Why I didn’t score perfectly? I would guess that something might be different from earth or the mistakes are their mistake instead of mine. For example, they have knowledge in Avalon that the three moons are the three eyes of the moon goddess that move around to watch her subjects. No need to say that other countries have different theories.

Me = “Thank you Zephira.”

Zephira = “As your reward I would personally sign your class excuses.”

Me = “Actually I am thinking more on the line of private classes.”

Zephira raise one of her eyebrow to me = “Explain.”

Me = “I would like to avoid attention. Listed as a class student without attending any class might attract an unwanted attention.”

Zephira looks offended = “You have nothing to fear in my school.”

Me = “I am sure I am safe for now but I won’t stay forever in the school and right now I am lacking self-defense ability.”

Zephira seems thinking for a bit = “You got a point. What do you have in mind?”

Me = “I am thinking of private classes so I can learn faster from the best teacher.”

Zephira = “You have a lot to ask, don’t you?”

Me = “Sorry, Zephira.”

Zephira = "Are you sure you want to do this? Doing this will limit your interaction to other children and I don't want you to lose your childhood time."

Me = "I am sure Zephira. I don't have a children mentality anyway."

Zephira = “Well, that is sensible enough. Ok, but in exchange I want you to promise me to participate in the international graduation tournament. I want to make sure everybody know that my school is the best.”

Me = “Graduation tournament? What is that?”

Zephira = “Top graduates can participate when they turn 15 years old. There will be tests and prelimary if you want to enter without recommendation but with mine you can directly go to the final stage. Then there will be international tournament which location is changing. Every school will send their best student there. Usually we are dominating the tournament but lately we only won once in the last 3 years. We still held the record for the most win though.”

Me = “Won’t it be dangerous if I attract too many attention?”

Zephira = “You will be able to defend yourself by then. Besides, they will be reluctant to kill a top graduate openly. You can always hold back your true skill but I expect you to win.”

I am still not sure and prefer to stay in the shadows.

Me = “Can I reject it?”

Zephira = “Of course you can but then you will disappoint me and losing my protection. School can be quite dangerous to those who disappoint its headmistress you know.”

I have no option then…. I am still too young and vulnerable and this school is the best chance to get stronger ASAP.

Me = “I will accept it then.”

Zephira = "I will teach you magic by myself and you can ask me for suggestions for the best teacher for any craft that you want to learn.”

Me = “For now I think beside magic, I also want to learn for close combat battles. After all everybody know that the weakness of a mage is close combat battle.”

Zephira = “Indeed a lot of mages spent so much time meditating and searching for knowledge that they ignore physical training.”

Zephira = “For martial arts, my recommendation is the human, Suma Han. He is well known as a knight with good unarmed combat skill. I can write you a letter of recommendation to him. I will also make sure that officially you are learning from Joanne. She is a good swordsman herself and has trained a lot of students, you can train daily with her after Suma Han finish your training.“

Me = “Suma Han isn’t good at sword play?”

Zephira = “He is excellent but he doesn't teach advance swordplay. Something along developing your own style.”

Me = “I see. So I will come back tomorrow for the letter.”

Zephira = “Let’s eat first in my favorite restaurant. My treat. There is someone that I want to introduce to you there. Besides, I want to know my pupil better.”

Surpised by her generosity, I can only nod at her.

We leave the room and go to a nearby restaurant. The location is still inside the school.

The restaurant looks very expensive. I asked for their specialty and the special dish is a fish steak with exotic garnish and some kind of mushroom sauce. It is simply very delicious. I never have anything like that before in this world or in earth.

During the brunch, Zephira asks me a lot of things. I guess she tries to decipher what makes me so special but I kept my reincarnation story to myself. At best I would be an object of worship, at worst they will make me a test subject.

The dish is very delicious and very expensive! Our brunch cost around 1,5 gold for both of us. There is no tip in here; in exchange we have paid an inclusive 10% tips for the waiter. Now usually a normal dish in the tavern in avalon will cost around 15-25 copper. A monthly wage is around 50-60 silver per month. 1 gold is 100 silver. 1 Silver is 100 copper. So I just ate more than a month’s worth of wage.

That makes me want to learn how to cook better. I might be able to make a living a chef in this world. All those masterchef show in the previous world has made me interested in cooking though I only cooked simple dishes before on earth.

Zephira kindly introduce me to Santoso, the dwarven head chef. He is a very nice guy and he will allow me to watch and practice in a corner in his kitchen. In exchange I will help washing dishes and cutting vegetables.

Zephira kindly spent the rest of the day to show me around the school. We separated after she treats me for dinner.

Me = “Thank you for the brunch and meal Zephira.”

Zephira = “No worries, you make an interesting subject after all.”

I got chill running down my spine but still manage to keep my calm.

Zephira = “I am surprised you are also interested in crafting skills.”

Me = “I am. My first priority is still combat related skills but I also love to have some skill in crafting. I am especially interested in combat related blacksmithing and tailoring”

Zephira = “If you want to learn sword smith then the dwarf, Kudus is well known as the best but he is quite eccentric and stingy. You should ask Santoso as he is a good friend of Kudus.

Me = “I see, I think I want to learn sword smith and tailoring. I still want to learn close combat skill first.

Come see me tomorrow morning and I will write you a recommendation letter to Suma Han.”

Me = “What time Zephira?”

Zephira = “Oh I see you are a quick learner. 07.00 in the morning and don’t be late.”

Me = “Yes Zephira. Thank you again for everything.”

Grinning, Zephira says = “Keep your thanks for later.”

Another chill went to my spine. I have a bad premonition but I guess I can’t back up now.

The next day I go to her office at 07.00 and she made me wait until 7.45.

Zephira = “Come inside boy. Another lesson for you. Be patient when you are asking for a favor.”

Me = “Yes Zephira.”

Zephira = “Bring this letter to Joanne, she will bring you to Suma Han. This letter is for Suma Han eyes only. Give it to him personally. Ask around in the martial art area for the fluid mountain dojo. Don’t open the letters or you will be sorry. I will know if you read it.”

How does she know that I plan to open the letters to check the content first?

Afraid to make her upset I keep my curiosity in check and put the letter in my bag.

I ask around in the martial arts area and everybody that I ask made a face. That just makes me more worry. 

Finally I find the dojo, in the end of the area.

The dojo is very nice and has a lot of students practicing.

The students’ age are varying from child of my age to young adult.

There are also several tough looking instructors.

An adult elf (I think he is one of the instructor) sees me entering the door and approaches me.

??? = “Do you want to join the Dojo boy?”

Me = “Yes sir. I have a letter for Joanne from Zephira.”

At the mention of the name, he calls for another elf.

??? = “Job, this kid has a letter for Master Joanne from headmistress Zephira. Kid, what’s your name? My name is John and you should refer to Master Joanne using Master honorific, you got it?”

Me = “Yes sir, sorry sir, I don’t know. My name is Bryson, sir.”

It is much better to be polite to your future senpais. Who knows if there is bullying in this dojo or not.

Job = “Follow me kid, Master Joanne is in the sword section.”

We walk to the east wing of the building and I can see people practicing with different kinds of swords. Some are very thin and some are carrying giant broadsword.

We are approaching a tall young looking adult elf who is teaching several teenage people.

Job = “Master Joanne, this kid has a letter to you from headmistress Zephira.”

She turns to us and shoots a questioning glance to me.

Me = “My name is Bryson Master Joanne and I have a letter for you.” I said while handing her the letter.

She reads the letter and pale slightly. Then she looks at me with pity in her eyes.

This is not good, I have a bad premonition.

Me = “Is there something wrong Master Joanne?”

Joanne = “Well, I think there is but you will see by yourself. Come follow me.”

Joanne = “Job, you can leave us now.”

I am following Master Joanne to the back of the dojo and we exit from the back door.

I can see someone having a nap in the back yard and I guess that he is Suma Han.

Joanne = “Sorry to disturb you master but this kid bring a letter from headmistress.”

To put it shortly, Suma Han is very different than my imagination. What I see is a fat person with funny face lying down basking in the sun in the back yard. His face remind me of a good easy going uncle but he has a presence that scream “dangerous” to all of my body. He has Asian features in his face but his skin tone is more like Middle Eastern earth human.

Suma Han = “Ho, she brings me another vic… I mean pupil. Good, good, I have been getting bored. Give me the letter kid.”

The pressure increases all around me. All of my instinct screams to me to run away from this master but I know that I won’t be able to escape so I freeze.

Suma Han = “Ho, sorry about it boy, I get too excited.”

With that the pressure subsides immediately and I found out how close I am from fainting. Later I find out he really tried to make me fainted. But for now I no longer find him intimidating although I know better.

Me = “I have a letter to you master Suma.”

I handed down the letter and he grins wide while he reads it. Now, if I don’t know the letter concerning me I would find his face hilarious but now I can only feel dread from his smile.

Suma Han = “Ok boy, no need to worry. I will train to personally. You need to skip classes for the beginner and sleep in the dojo but I can see that Zephira already take care of that.”

At that, the elf beside me pales noticeably.

Joanne = “Master Suma, isn’t he a little bit too young to train under you?”

Suma Han = “Nonsense, he is recommended by Zephira. I am sure he will survi… I mean follow my teaching.”

I REALLY REALLY have a bad premonition but I know I can’t escape from this fat smiling demon.

He brings me to a big room in the bag and once we are alone inside.

Suma Han = “Now strip boy.”

I freeze at that, is he a paedophile? Nooo, I don’t want to be a paedophile victim…..

Suma Han = “Why are you freezing? I need to teach you about muscles and training. It won’t hurt… much.”

I relax at his explanation but the last word sends another chill to my spine.

I strip and he explains all of my muscles, the use, how to train them and how to control everything. 

Everything! A good martial artist must know himself well.

To put it short, I have 6 months of hellish training, I won’t write down what happened back then since I still have a trauma of the experience. I think I survive only because my restoration from my Goddess of the star blessing.

I can assure you nothing sexual happened and I kept my chastity but it involves a lot of screaming, crying, begging, fainting, etc. Oh, there are a lot of thing that might classify as sexual harassment although he did it purely to teach me about muscle. I manage to acquire several useful skills though:

I also lost my sword mastery and archery, being absorbed into weapon mastery. I couldn’t practice my other skill during my training except meditation and mana perception so naturally my other skills don’t increase at all.

I also go a peculiar skill, massage since Master Suma think that understanding muscle is best done while massaging.

I personally think he just like massage. He is quite big after all.

Suma Han = “Well boy, congratulation. You are the fastest vic.. I mean pupil that finish my basic training. You are also the 99th pupil to finish it until this stage in my entire life. Usually it takes 2-3 years before they manage to complete the basic training.”

I shudder at that. Basic training? I should avoid his advance course then. I don’t think I can last for 2 or 3 years of this hellish training. Thanks for Genius Mind and my understanding of biology and the goddess of the stars otherwise I wouldn’t survive. Nevertheless I bow my head and give him my thanks. I gained 11 skills after all from his teaching.

Suma Han = “You need to come to the dojo every morning to complete your training in a few years. You need to hone your skill. Use this dojo to practice and feel free to spar with other students. I still have few things to teach you when you are more mature. You wouldn’t survive otherwise.”

Me = “Yes master, I would be sure to do that.”

Suma Han = “Come back to me after you reach advance level in martial art then we will enter the next phase.”

Me = “Um, I must do that master?”

Suma Han = “Can you repeat that? It seems my old age has started to affect my hearing.”

Needless to say I don’t believe the “old age” excuse.

I quickly says:

Me = “I meant to say yes, Master.”

With that my first hellish training is over. I never tell anyone my experience in that. Just preferably to mention personal training if anybody ask.

At the end of the training, I increase my stat quite a lot:

When I go back to the dorm, Cao barrages me with questions; even Aditya is asking a lot. I guess missing for 6 months must kindle their curiosity.

Me = “Hold on. Hold on. I will explain but one by one, ok?”

With that they kept quiet.

Me = "Promise me to keep it a secret."

They both nod at that.

I inhale and wish I can trust them not to spill the beans everywhere.

Me = “I have been training with master Suma for the past 6 months. Sorry I didn’t inform you before but I had no idea I would be staying at the dojo.”

Gasping at me, both of them say at the same time.

“Master Suma? Surely you don’t mention GrandMaster Suma Han.”

Apparently he is very famous.

Me = “Yes, he is. Why?”

Cao = “You don’t know, OMG, you seriously don’t know?”

While Aditya jaw is still hanging open. Is Suma Han that famous? Luckily Cao explain the condition for me.

Cao = “You know out of thousands disciple that he only has less than 100 people who graduate his basic course and only 6 graduates from his final course? And there are a lot of rumor of his pupil dying, disable, or emotionally scarred for live.”

I shudder at that. The memory of the training is still fresh in my mind.

Me = “You mention only 6 out of less than 100 people graduates his final course. What happened to the rest?”

Cao = “I heard half of them are dead while the rest now are master level in combat despite failing.”

Me = “What about the 6 people who graduates from his final course?”

Cao = “Oh they are quite famous, they are all grandmaster class but I forget who are they. I only remember the Shang youngest General, Yue Fei is the one of his graduate. He is one of my idol”

I made a mental note to check on the library the day after tomorrow after morning practice in the dojo. Obviously there are still a lot of things I don’t know yet.

Aditya = “Would you tell us about his training? It seems none of his student is willing to tell anything about that.”

I let out so much of my killing intent that shocks both of them.

Me = “I would prefer not to talk about it. In fact, please don’t mention anything about it in front of me.”

Both of them quickly nod at that.

Cao = “There are 2 letters that arrive while you are away, one from your family and one from Serin. Don’t worry it is enchanted so we can’t open it.”

Which implies that he will read it if it is not enchanted. 

I sigh but I guess I can tolerate a curious kid.

I open the letter from Serin and read it.

She tells me that she wishes me well and she is joining an adventurer party to explore unexplored territory in the south east. I can leave a message for her in the elven mage guild if something important comes up. However, it might take a long time for her to come in contact to any elven mage guild.

I pray that she is successful in her journey.

Another letter is from my parent asking for my condition. Serin already sends them a letter informing that we have arrived safely in Avalon but I completely forget to send a letter to them.

To my defend, I have never write a letter in earth so it completely slips my mind.

I made a note in my mind to write a constant letters to home.

I think i better start writing diary in english so i don't forget things.

The next day I spent with Yumiko and Himiko, they went wide eyes at the name of Suma Han. It seems he is very famous.

Himiko already have a high popularity in the school due to her cuteness and her talent in fire magic. I can feel the eyes from other children when I walk with Himiko.

Later I found out that it seems she has a big fan group already, “The Golden Fox Fan Group”, the members are now mostly girls who loves her fur and cute look. That would change in a few years but that tales is for later.
