--A medical report from New Oxford Hospital’s public database

Of course, could I suggest unlocking the Class I Medical Utilities catalogue for fifty points to see to both of your injuries? You currently have twenty-five points available from killing that Model Nine, along with the standard one-hundred-point initialisation bonus.

I only half pay attention to the rich, feminine voice speaking far too calmly in my head as I reach Chip and drag myself up to sit beside his small, slumped form. I can barely see him, but I’m not sure if that’s due to the dark or my eyelids flickering, trying to shut as my head swims.

Points… Catalogue… Model Nine…

The words echo around my mind as my breaths become shallower.

Am I… crazy? I didn’t think my brain could get more damaged, but I guess I was wrong.

I open my mouth to respond to the voice in my head, because why not roll with the punches, but a soft nose presses against my bleeding arm, and I hear a heart wrenching whine from Spot that momentarily distracts me.

I… What was I doing?

Elise, please focus on my voice.

Oh, the lady in my head.

You appear to be experiencing severe disorientation from blood loss. Please give me permission to purchase Class I Medical Utilities, a WoundStop, and a Mind Krank Ultra.

She sounds pretty. I wish I sounded like her.

Please nod your head if you agree to the purchases.

I do as the pretty voice says and slowly nod my head.

Thank you

Suddenly, I feel two light objects fall into my lap, and Spot lets out a startled yelp.

Please open the-

The voice in my head starts saying something before stopping at the same time as I feel Spot scramble into my lap and start messing with whatever fell there. I hear something plastic fall to the floor beside me, and Spot climbs up my hoodie before pressing something to my lips.

I open my mouth without thinking, it’s not like he’d ever try to feed me something dangerous, and I feel a small pill land on my tongue. I swallow it, and immediately feel a rush of clarity.

The pain in my arm fades to a whisper and my eyes snap open wide. I’m still not able to see through the dark, but every faint shape I’m able to make out suddenly seems to stand out as much as a bowler hat in the twenty-first century. I breathe in and almost gag at how strong the stench of sewage is now, but I’m also able to pick up the faint iron tang of blood in the air.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

My mind clearing up is nice and all, but I’m suddenly frightfully aware of how close I am to dying. Or worse, losing Chip.

Please open the case in your lap and apply the WoundStop. I’ve taken the liberty of modifying it to eject in four bursts so you can close all of your wounds.

And there’s that voice again, Cyon I think she said? Now that I’m able to actually think again, it becomes painfully obvious to me that I am in fact not losing it. That creature, a Model Nine as Cyon called it, was an antithesis. I’ve been chosen as a samurai.

I open the box Spot didn’t touch with my left hand and pick up the large syringe within, almost dropping it because of the slick blood coating my palm.

One end is the activation button, and the other is the applicator. Simply place the applicator into a cut and press.

I nod and spin the tube, gripping it firmly near the top with my thumb resting against the flat end, and stick the pointy end into one of the nasty gashes down the inside of my forearm. It’s hard for me to tell exactly how deep the cuts are with my limited vision, but I’m pretty sure I just hit the bone with the applicator, so probably very.

I press the button and feel a sand-like substance fill the wound. It’s a little uncomfortable, but this Mind Krank thing is working wonders because I don’t even flinch. I quickly do the same with the other three gashes before tossing the empty tube away and turning to look down at Chip beside me.

I squint at his body, lying in a heap against the side of the pipe beside me. It’s hard to make out any details, but as I lean down closer to him, I can definitely hear him breathing still, faint as it is.

Could I suggest purchasing a basic head torch for one point?

I nod at Cyon’s timely suggestion and another box falls into my lap.

New Purchase: Basic Head Torch

I pop it open and pull out the multi-bulb torch attached to an elastic strap within. My fingers find the on button, and I press it only to practically blind myself in the process. I blink the dots out of my eyes and turn the torch towards Chip, and my blood runs cold at the sight.

He’s lying on his stomach in a pool of blood, with our siblings on either side of him gently nuzzling him in comfort. Granted, I’m pretty sure most of that blood is mine, but it’s still not good.

“What do I need?” I ask Cyon urgently, trying to stay as calm as she sounds and failing.

Please turn him over so I can see his wounds properly.

I nod and press the head torch to my forehead, holding it in place with my right wrist since I still can’t move my hand properly, a problem for later, and pull the strap over my head to secure it in place. I reach out and tap Spot to ask him to move, before trying to turn Chip over as gently as possible.

Spot and Stripe realise what I’m doing quickly and help me turn him over slowly.

“Ee,” Chip squeaks softly, crushing my heart at the weakness of his voice but also reassuring me he’s still conscious.

I carefully brush aside the bloodied fur and see two long gashes across the lower half of his belly. It’s a little hard to tell through the blood, but the wounds only look a few inches deep.

I would suggest another WoundStop to stem the bleeding first, then a Class I Nano-Regenerative Suite and a Hemo-Restore for both of you for a total of forty-five points.

I nod, giving her permission for the purchases without asking any questions. The faster I can help him the better.

Five new boxes fall into my lap. Three of them are the same plain white plastic as my first purchases were, but the other two have a small raccoon printed in the centre. I ignore them for now and pop open the largest box, pulling out a second WoundStop.

Sorry buddy, this won’t feel nice.

I push the applicator into the top gash and press the button. Chip lets out a weak squeal and tries to squirm away from the pain, but Spot and Stripe both hold him in place, trusting me to help him.

I pull the syringe out of the cut as an off-white foam bubbles up and solidifies into place, sealing it shut. After emptying the syringe into the second wound, Chip relaxes and murmurs a quiet sound of relief.

He’s no longer in any danger.

I breathe a sigh of relief at Cyon’s reassurance and move on to the rest of the boxes, starting with the unmarked ones. The first one I open has a small red tube with a yellow arrow pointing to one end in it.

That’s a Hemo-Restore. Press the end against your skin.

I nod and follow her instructions, lifting my hoodie a bit and placing it against my stomach. The red drains into me without so much as a pinch, so I toss the empty tube away and move onto the next box.

This one has a strange-looking face mask thing? I don’t even wait for Cyon’s instructions this time, covering my nose and mouth with the mask before breathing in. I feel an unpleasant buzzing pass down my throat and into my lungs, before spreading across my body.

It focuses on my right forearm, but I feel the sensation everywhere, from my split cheek to the bruises on my knees. My right hand starts to twitch, but I ignore it for now and turn my attention to the boxes marked for Chip.

The first one holds another Hemo-Restore, this one a touch darker than the first. He doesn’t react when I inject it. I guess it really doesn’t hurt.

The second looks like a deeper face mask, and it fits perfectly over his muzzle. He squirms as I hold it to his face, clearly having a lot worse of a time with it than I did thanks to the Mind Krank…

What is Mind Krank?
