Prodigy vs prodigy

Leo POV

"So...are you nervous?" June asked me while poking at my head. I was trying to get a quick power nap before I started the second portion of my exam. Most of my class was sitting by the stands June and I included. We watched from the stone staircases in the stands as two of my classmates battled. It was Gary and some other guy I forgot the name of. Gary was using a Rhyhorn while his apposition was using a pincer.

It was a pretty one-sided battle honestly.

Gary was just playing with his food at this point. At least, that's what I assumed based on all the reactions I was hearing. I honestly wasn't paying attention I kept dosing off for some reason. Well at least I was tryna dose off, but June wouldn't stop asking me questions.

"Leo!" the blonde yelled in my ears causing me to snap out of my thoughts.

"Mhmm, were you saying something?" I asked, resisting the urge to yawn. Unfortunately, I failed in this task.

"I've been talking to you for like three minutes! Seriously, why have you been zoning out so much lately?" I shrugged my shoulders, genuinely unsure how to answer that question. I didn't need to be a psychic to see that the answer didn't satisfy her, "Whatever doesn't matter anyways!" she said, releasing a sigh of frustration.

"Oh wow, so I don't matter now? That wounds me, June!" I say while rolling my eyes. She scoffs at the statement, less amused and more...annoyed. She did realize I was joking, right?

"Of course you're important, it's just hard to talk to you...sometimes you're so hard to read so I don't bother sometimes.

Apparently, she did not realize that I was joking. Typical. "If you get glasses I'll be easier to read properly–okay that joke was horrible honestly I'm starting to sound like Gary..."

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"You're not funny, Leo," she said with an eye roll.

"I'm hilarious! My humour's just an acquired taste,"

"No no, Leo. You just require a sense of humour," she scoffed. Just as I was about to defend myself there was a loud crash. I turned my attention from June to Gary's battle. Just as predicted Gary had just knocked out his opponent.

After being declared winner he walked out of the ring with a smug smirk on his face. Said smirk only grew as some of our classmates cheered for his victory.

Gary had to be top of our class.

He was also one of the most overconfident people in my class. But when he and I become trainers I'll challenge him. I bet he'd give me a really good battle, it's a shame we didn't battle in the exam. And speaking of me battling; I'm getting tired of waiting.

"Okay, who wants to go next?" The professor asked, looking to the stand expectingly. "I'll just pick for you if no one stands up!"

"I'll go next professor! I can't let Gary steal the spotlight!" Leaf says while smirking confidently. Gary who had now reached the stands just rolled his eyes but still had that small smirk on his face. "Okay, and who wishes to battle Leaf?" Oak says ignoring the comment. The rest of the class just stayed quiet looking nervously at each other. Leaf was second in the class overall and her father was no other than a Gym Leader of Viridian City.

No one was gonna stand up and risk scoring low marks on their exam.

"I'll battle her," I say standing from my seat. Most of the class looked surprised by this while others just looked happy they didn't have to battle her."Wait, Leo are sure about this?" June said while grabbing hold of my arm, "She's been raised for this stuff her whole life! She has the advantage of more battle experience," she says whispering to me. "I don't think anyone but Gary could beat her!"

"Cool, so when I beat her I'll look really badass!" I say shrugging my shoulders.

"Leo, are battling Leaf or not?" the professor asked one eyebrow raised but a smile on his face.

"Yeah, I'm battling her,"I said as I went to the battle ring, Leaf going down there with me. The professor handed us one PokeBall each before we headed to the different sides of the ring. Leaf's confident smile in contrast to my blank expression.

"You sure don't wanna back out, Leo?" she questions, "if I beat you too badly, you'll fail and not gonna trainer license!"

"Nah, relax. You and June worry too much," I say waving away her comments while rolling my eyes. "It will be fine after all you are kinda weak," At my words, Leaf's smile wavered slightly. Before she even retorted though, the professor decided to start things up.

"Battle begin!!!"
