Chapter 7: New Bonds and Hidden Strengths

Chapter 7: New Bonds and Hidden Strengths

The early morning sun filtered through the trees as I stepped out of the Pokémon Center, stretching my arms above my head. The events of yesterday still swirled in my mind—the injured Scyther, the crowded center, and most of all, the awe-inspiring sight of Drakosloara soaring over the forest. I couldn't shake the feeling that our paths were destined to cross again.

"Ready for some training?" Lisa's cheerful voice broke through my reverie. Her Pikachu perched on her shoulder, cheeks sparking with excitement. Last night, right before bed, Lisa came up to me, and we talked for about an hour about our Pokémon, the Pokémon league challenge, and how we both wanted to be champion. We agreed to help each other train and work on some attacks.

I nodded, a smile tugging at my lips. "Absolutely. Let's see what our teams can do."

We found a clearing not far from the Pokémon Center, close enough to rush back if needed, but far enough to give us space to work. I released Silver, Gaia, and Zephyr from their Poké Balls, watching as they materialized before me. Silver, my Larvitar, immediately took a protective stance in front of me, while Gaia, my Fennekin, yawned and stretched lazily. Zephyr, however, remained hunched over, his feathers ruffled and eyes downcast.

"Alright, team," I said, kneeling down to their level. "We've got some work to do today. Lisa's going to help us, and we're going to help her too. Sound good?"

Silver and Gaia chirped in agreement, but Zephyr merely shuffled his feet, avoiding my gaze. My heart ached for the little Pidgey. Whatever his previous trainer had done had left deep scars, and I was determined to help him heal.

"Let's start with some basic exercises," I suggested to Lisa. "How about we work on accuracy and agility?"

Lisa nodded enthusiastically. "Great idea! Pikachu, you're up!"

We spent the next hour running drills, setting up makeshift targets and having our Pokémon dodge each other's attacks. I kept a close eye on Zephyr, who participated reluctantly but showed flashes of impressive speed.

"Zephyr, try using Gust on that pine cone!" I called out, pointing to a target we'd set up.

Zephyr flapped his wings, creating a small whirlwind that sent the pine cone spinning. But as it flew, I noticed something odd—a faint shimmer in the air, almost like...

"Ice?" Lisa gasped, voicing my own surprise.

Indeed, tiny ice crystals had formed in the wake of Zephyr's Gust. I quickly pulled out my Pokédex, scrolling through the information on Islaris Pidgey.

"Fascinating," I murmured. "It says here that Islaris Pidgey have the hidden ability to turn normal-type attacks into ice-type attacks. And when they fully evolve, Islaris Pidgeot are often mistaken for Articuno!"

Zephyr cocked his head, looking as surprised as I felt. For the first time since I'd caught him, I saw a spark of interest in his eyes.

"That's amazing!" Lisa exclaimed. "Zephyr, you're full of surprises!"

I knelt down beside Zephyr, careful not to make any sudden movements. "See that, buddy? You've got some pretty special skills. How about we work on developing them together?"

Zephyr hesitated for a moment, then gave a small nod. It wasn't much, but it was progress.

As we continued training, I noticed Lisa becoming increasingly distracted. Her eyes kept darting to the edge of the clearing, where the forest grew denser.

"Everything okay?" I asked.

Lisa bit her lip. "I... I thought I saw something. In the trees."

I followed her gaze, scanning the shadowy undergrowth. At first, I saw nothing. Then, a flash of green and... was that a flame?

"There!" Lisa pointed excitedly. "Did you see it?"

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

I nodded, my heart racing. "Should we check it out?"

Lisa's eyes sparkled with determination. "Definitely!"

We recalled our Pokémon, save for Lisa's Pikachu, and cautiously approached the spot where we'd seen the movement. As we drew closer, I caught another glimpse of green scales and a flickering flame.

"Is that... a Charmander?" I whispered, incredulous.

Lisa's eyes widened. "But it's green! And look at its tail!"

She was right. As the Pokémon came into full view, I saw that it was indeed a Charmander, but unlike any I'd ever seen. Its scales were a deep forest green, and the flame on its tail was encased in what looked like a glowing rosebud.

"It must be an Islaris variant," I breathed, reaching for my Pokédex.

Before I could look up any information, the Charmander noticed us. It let out a startled cry and darted deeper into the forest.

"Wait!" Lisa called out, already giving chase. "I want to catch it!"

I hesitated for a split second before following. "Be careful!" I shouted after her. "We don't know what other Pokémon might be out here!"

We crashed through the underbrush, ducking under low-hanging branches and leaping over gnarled roots. The Charmander was fast, but Lisa was determined. I saw her pull out a Poké Ball as we entered a small glade.

"Pikachu, use Thunder Wave!" Lisa commanded.

Pikachu leapt from her shoulder, cheeks sparking. A wave of electricity shot towards the Charmander, paralyzing it momentarily.

"Now's your chance!" I called out.

Lisa didn't hesitate. She threw the Poké Ball with perfect aim, striking the Charmander squarely on the head. The ball opened, drawing the Pokémon inside in a flash of red light. It fell to the ground, shaking once... twice... three times...

Click!

A wide grin spread across Lisa's face as she picked up the Poké Ball. "I did it!" she exclaimed, turning to me with shining eyes. "I caught my first Pokémon!"

I couldn't help but smile back, her excitement infectious. "Congratulations! That was some quick thinking with Pikachu's Thunder Wave."

Lisa beamed, clutching the Poké Ball to her chest. "I can't believe it! An Islaris Charmander... I've never even heard of one before!"

"Neither have I," I admitted. "Why don't we head back to the clearing and take a closer look?"

As we made our way back, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy. Lisa had just caught a rare and powerful Pokémon, while I was still struggling to connect with Zephyr. But I pushed the feeling aside. This was Lisa's moment, and I was genuinely happy for her.

Back in the clearing, Lisa released her new Charmander. It materialized in a flash of light, looking around warily.

"Hey there," Lisa said softly, kneeling down. "I'm Lisa. Sorry for startling you earlier. I'd really like us to be friends, if you'll give me a chance."

The Charmander regarded her for a moment, then cautiously approached. Lisa held out her hand, and after a brief hesitation, the Pokémon nuzzled against it.

I pulled out my Pokédex, scanning the Charmander. "According to this, Islaris Charmander are Grass and Dragon type. That's an incredible combination!"

Lisa's eyes widened. "Grass and Dragon? That's amazing!" She turned back to her new Pokémon. "What do you think about the name Verdant?"

The Charmander tilted its head, considering, then let out a happy chirp.

"Verdant it is, then!" Lisa laughed.

As Lisa bonded with Verdant, I released Zephyr again. The Pidgey appeared, still looking dejected.

"Hey there, Zephyr," I said gently. "I was hoping we could work on those ice moves of yours. What do you say?"

Zephyr looked up at me, a flicker of interest in his eyes. I took that as a good sign.

"Let's start with something simple. Try using Gust on that rock over there, but focus on the cold feeling we saw earlier."

Zephyr spread his wings, flapping them to create a gust of wind. At first, nothing seemed different, but then I saw it—tiny ice crystals forming in the air, swirling around the rock.

"That's it!" I exclaimed. "You're doing great, Zephyr!"

For the first time, I saw Zephyr puff up his chest a little, looking proud.

We spent the next few hours training, Lisa working with Verdant on his Grass-type moves while I helped Zephyr refine his ice abilities. By the time the sun began to set, we were all exhausted but exhilarated.

"I can't believe how much progress we've made," Lisa said, wiping sweat from her brow. "Verdant's already mastered Vine Whip!"

I nodded, watching as Zephyr performed a Gust attack that left a thin layer of frost on the ground. "Zephyr's come a long way too. I think we're starting to understand each other better."

As we packed up our things, preparing to head back to the Pokémon Center, a bittersweet feeling settled over me. I knew it was time for Lisa and me to part ways.

"So, I guess this is where we say goodbye for now," I said, trying to keep my voice light.

Lisa nodded, her smile tinged with sadness. "Yeah, I suppose so. But hey, we'll see each other at the Pokémon League Championships, right?"

I grinned, feeling a surge of determination. "You bet we will. And don't think I'll go easy on you just because we're friends!"

Lisa laughed. "I wouldn't have it any other way. Take care, Alyssa. And thanks... for everything."

We hugged briefly, then turned to go our separate ways. As I walked back towards Route 1, Zephyr perched on my shoulder and my other Pokémon safely in their balls, I felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The road ahead would be challenging, no doubt. But with my team by my side and the memory of Drakosloara's majestic flight spurring me on, I knew I was ready for whatever lay ahead.

The Aquarilla region held many mysteries, and I was determined to uncover them all.
