Pokemon: Alyssa's journey
Chapter 4: the first real step

Chapter 4: the first real step

The first rays of dawn crept through the curtains, painting streaks of gold across my small room at the Pokémon Center. I blinked away the remnants of sleep, my mind already racing with plans for the day ahead. Today was the day I'd finally strike out into the wilds of Aquarilla Island.

I swung my legs over the side of the bed, stretching as I stood. "Rise and shine, team," I called softly.

Silver, my shiny Islaris Larvitar, yawned widely from her perch on the windowsill. Her metallic scales gleamed in the early morning light, the blue bioluminescent tips of her horns pulsing gently. Beside her, nestled in a makeshift bed of blankets, my newest companion stirred.

The Islaris Fennekin blinked up at me, her vibrant green fur ruffled from sleep. Pink and red accents, reminiscent of exotic flowers, decorated her coat. She tilted her head, awaiting instruction.

"Good morning," I said, kneeling to scratch behind her ears. "You know, we can't keep calling you 'Fennekin.' You need a proper name."

I pulled out my new Rotom Phone, marveling again at the advanced technology. The screen flickered to life, displaying a cheerful face. "Good morning, Alyssa!" the Rotom chirped. "How can I assist you today?"

"Morning, Rotom," I replied. "Can you pull up the Pokédex entry for my Islaris Fennekin?"

"Certainly!" The screen shifted, displaying a wealth of information about my new partner. I scanned through the stats and moves, impressed by what I saw.

"Magical Leaf, Confusion, Life Dew, and Vine Whip," I murmured. "Not bad at all." I glanced at the Fennekin, who was watching me intently. "You're quite the powerhouse, aren't you? All that potential, wrapped up in such a small package."

The Fennekin's ears perked up, and she let out a soft, melodious cry that sounded almost like laughter.

I grinned. "You know what? I think I'll call you Gaia. It suits you – a name that represents the earth and all growing things."

Gaia – it felt right to finally have a name for her – yipped happily and spun in a circle, clearly pleased with her new moniker.

"Alright, Gaia and Silver," I said, standing and stretching once more. "Let's get ready. We've got a long journey ahead of us."

I quickly packed my bag, double-checking that I had all the essentials: potions, antidotes, spare Poké Balls, and enough food and water to last a few days. The routes on Aquarilla Island were long, often taking multiple days to traverse. I'd need to be prepared for anything.

As I shouldered my pack, a familiar pang of loneliness hit me. Growing up in orphanages across Unova had taught me self-reliance, but it had also left its scars. I shook my head, pushing the feeling aside. This journey was my chance to prove myself, to find the belonging I'd always craved.

"Come on, team," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil of emotions. "Let's show this island what we're made of."

We left the Pokémon Center, stepping out into the bustling streets of Coralport City. The salty breeze carried the scents of the sea and the nearby marketplace. Fishermen hawked their morning catch, while early risers hurried to and fro, their own partner Pokémon trotting at their heels.

I paused at the city limits, taking one last look at the skyline. The contest arena near the beach glinted in the morning sun, a reminder of the challenges that lay ahead. But first, I had to prove myself in battle.

"Ready?" I asked, glancing down at Gaia and Silver. Both Pokémon nodded, determination shining in their eyes.

We set off down Route 1, the coastal path stretching before us like a promise of adventure. The sandy beaches to our right sparkled, while small caves dotted the cliffs to our left. Wild Pokémon called out from the underbrush, their cries a symphony of nature.

As we walked, I kept a keen eye out for other trainers and wild Pokémon. It wasn't long before we encountered our first challenge – a Wingull swooped down from the cliffs, screeching a battle cry.

"Gaia, you're up!" I called. The Islaris Fennekin leapt forward, her green fur bristling with excitement.

The Wingull dove, its beak gleaming dangerously.

"Dodge and use Magical Leaf!" I commanded.

Gaia nimbly sidestepped the attack, then launched a flurry of glowing leaves. They homed in on the Wingull, striking it despite its aerial maneuvers. The wild Pokémon squawked in surprise, clearly not expecting such a powerful attack from the small Fennekin.

"Now, follow up with Confusion!"

Gaia's eyes glowed with psychic energy. The Wingull froze mid-air, caught in the grip of the attack. It struggled briefly before plummeting to the ground, dazed.

"Great job, Gaia!" I cheered. The Fennekin pranced back to me, clearly pleased with her performance.

We continued down the path, encountering more wild Pokémon along the way. Each battle helped Gaia grow stronger, her movements becoming more fluid, her attacks more powerful. Silver watched from beside me, her electric-blue eyes gleaming with a mixture of pride and impatience. I could tell she was itching for her own chance to prove herself.

As the sun climbed higher in the sky, we rounded a bend in the path and came face to face with another trainer. He was a young boy, probably no more than twelve, with a determined glint in his eye.

"Hey!" he called out. "You're a trainer, right? Let's battle!"

I grinned, feeling a surge of adrenaline. This was what I'd been waiting for – a real test of our skills. "You're on," I replied. "One on one?"

The boy nodded, already reaching for a Poké Ball. "Go, Crabrawler!"

A stout, blue crab Pokémon materialized, its large fists raised in a boxing stance.

I considered my options. Gaia had been working hard, and this would be a tough matchup for her. "Silver, you're up," I decided.

My shiny Larvitar stepped forward, electricity crackling between her horns. The boy's eyes widened at the sight of her unusual coloring.

"Whoa, cool Pokémon!" he exclaimed. "But don't think that'll save you. Crabrawler, use Power-Up Punch!"

The crab Pokémon charged forward, its fist glowing with fighting-type energy.

"Silver, dodge and use Thunder Shock!"

Silver nimbly sidestepped the attack, then let loose a bolt of electricity. It struck the Crabrawler dead-on, causing it to stumble back with a pained cry.

"Don't give up, Crabrawler!" the boy shouted. "Use Bubble Beam!"

A stream of energized bubbles shot towards Silver.

"Counter with Dragon Rage!" I commanded.

Silver opened her mouth, releasing a blast of draconic energy. The two attacks collided in mid-air, creating a spectacular explosion of mist and sparks.

"Now, while it's distracted – Tackle!"

Silver charged through the dissipating mist, slamming into the Crabrawler with all her might. The impact sent the crab Pokémon flying backward, where it landed in a heap at its trainer's feet.

"Crabrawler is unable to battle," I called out, mimicking the officials I'd seen in televised matches. "Silver wins!"

The boy recalled his Pokémon, a mix of disappointment and admiration on his face. "Wow, you're really strong," he said, walking over to shake my hand. "I've never seen a Larvitar like that before."

I smiled, kneeling to give Silver a congratulatory pat. "She's special, alright. You put up a great fight, though. Your Crabrawler has a mean punch."

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

We chatted for a few minutes, exchanging tips and stories. As the boy headed back towards Coralport City, I felt a warm glow of satisfaction. It wasn't just the thrill of victory – it was the connection, however brief, that we'd formed through battle.

But there was no time to dwell on it. The day was young, and we had miles to cover. We pressed on, the coastal scenery gradually giving way to more rugged terrain. Small caves dotted the cliffside, and I made mental notes of their locations. They could provide shelter if we needed it, or hiding spots for rare Pokémon.

As afternoon wore on, the sound of rushing water caught my attention. Curious, I veered off the main path, following the noise. After pushing through some dense underbrush, we emerged at the edge of a small, hidden waterfall. The water cascaded down moss-covered rocks into a clear pool and shallow river below.

"What do you say we take a break here?" I asked my Pokémon. Both Gaia and Silver nodded enthusiastically.

I set down my pack and pulled out some food – simple sandwiches for me, and specially formulated Pokémon food for my partners. As we ate, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of our surroundings. Aquarilla Island was proving to be full of surprises.

Our peaceful lunch was interrupted by a rustling in the bushes. I tensed, ready for another wild Pokémon encounter. Instead, a girl about my age stumbled into the clearing, looking flustered.

"Oh!" she exclaimed, clearly not expecting to find anyone else here. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to intrude. I was just following the sound of the waterfall."

I waved off her apology. "No worries. It's not like I own the place. I'm Alyssa."

"Mira," she replied, her eyes darting to Gaia and Silver. "Are you a trainer?"

I nodded. "Just starting out on my journey. You?"

Mira's face lit up. "Me too! I left Wavecrest Village yesterday. Say, since we're both here... how about a battle?"

The familiar rush of excitement flooded through me. Two trainer battles in one day – this was exactly the kind of experience I needed. "You're on," I said, getting to my feet. "Two on two?"

Mira nodded, already backing up to create space for the battle. "Sounds perfect. Go, Buizel!"

An black weasel-like Pokémon appeared, its twin tails spinning like propellers. It had to be an Islaris variant.

“Islaris Buizel the water weasel Pokémon, it’s water/ fighting typing make it a powerful opponent on both land and in water.” Said my new Rotom phone using the Pokédex app.

I jumped a little surprised by rotom proactively scanning the new Pokémon without me asking it to, it must have a new feature to automatically scan any Pokemon I haven’t seen. I thought but now that I had this information.

"Gaia, you're up!" I called. My Islaris Fennekin bounded forward, her flower-like markings seeming to glow with anticipation.

Mira's eyebrows shot up. "An Islaris Fennekin? That's so cool! But don't think we'll go easy on you. Buizel, use Water Gun!"

A jet of water shot towards Gaia.

"Dodge and use Magical Leaf!" I commanded.

Gaia leapt to the side, the Water Gun splashing harmlessly against the rocks. She countered with a flurry of glowing leaves that homed in on Buizel, striking it despite its attempt to dodge.

"Hang in there, Buizel!" Mira called. "Use aqua jet!"

A Buizel surrounded itself with a rush of raging water and flew towards Gaia.

"Counter with Confusion!" “You have to try and slam it, it’s too fast to dodge.” I shouted.

Gaia's eyes glowed with psychic energy. It tried to slow buizel, but then at the last second shifted Buizel’s direction, sending it crashing into some rock on the shallow stream with its own momentum. Buizel got up momentarily stunned as it tried to shake off the impact with the rocks.

"Now, follow up with Vine Whip!"

Long vines extended from Gaia's body, whipping forward to strike Buizel. The water-type Pokémon stumbled back, clearly on its last legs.

"Buizel, return!" Mira called, recalling her Pokémon before it could faint. "You did great, take a rest. Go, Pikipek!"

A red and black bird Pokémon appeared, embers trailing from its wings as it took to the air.

“Islaris the woodpecker Pokemon, it fire and flying typing helps it to drill into hard trees to build its nest.” said Rotom once again.

I gritted my teeth. This was a tough matchup for Gaia – this Pikipek’s fire-type moves would be super effective against her. But I trusted in our training.

"Gaia, stay alert!" I called. "Use Life Dew to boost your health!"

A shimmering mist surrounded Gaia, restoring some of her energy.

"Pikipek, use Ember!" Mira commanded.

The bird Pokémon flapped its wings, sending a shower of fiery sparks towards Gaia.

"Dodge and use Magical Leaf!"

Gaia narrowly avoided the Ember attack, retaliating with another burst of homing leaves. They struck Fletchinder, but the flying-type seemed to shrug off the damage.

"Aerial Ace,Pikipek!" Mira called.

Before I could shout a warning, Pikipek swooped down with blinding speed, striking Gaia head-on. My Fennekin tumbled backward, struggling to her feet. Her fur coat ability cutting the damage in half and dampening most of the impact, however I could tell that hurt it was a super effective critical hit and her bell was really rung.

"Gaia, return!" I called, holding out her Poké Ball. She disappeared in a flash of red light. "You fought beautifully. Take a good rest."

I turned to Silver, who was watching the battle with intense focus. "You're up, partner. Let's show them what we can do."

Silver stepped forward, electricity crackling between her horns. Mira's eyes widened at the sight of my shiny Larvitar.

"Whoa, I've never seen a Larvitar like that before!" she exclaimed. "Is it... electric-type?"

I grinned. "Electric and Dragon, actually. Silver, use Thunder Shock!"

A bolt of electricity shot from Silver's horns, striking Pikipek before it could dodge. The bird Pokémon squawked in surprise, its flight becoming erratic.

"Pikipek, shake it off and use Flame Charge!" Mira called.

Pikipek cloaked itself in flames and dove towards Silver.

"Dodge and use Dragon Rage!" I commanded.

Silver sidestepped the attack, then unleashed a blast of draconic energy. It struck Pikipek mid-turn, sending the bird Pokémon crashing to the shallow water below.

"Pikipek is unable to battle," I called out. "Silver wins, which means one more and the match goes to me!"

Mira recalled her Pikipek, a rueful smile on her face. "That was incredible, but the battle isn’t over just yet. Go, Buizel" she said, and once again Bruizel took the battle field it was a little worn-out but you could tell it wasn’t happy with its last showing and Is ready to go again.

i knew silver had the type advantage but that fighting typing was nothing to laugh at, fighting type Pokemon are known for being powerful close range combatants we had to be ready.

“Silver stay on guard.” She looked back at me then nodded, she charged up with electric energy sparking off her body and the shallow river water creating a small pillar of steam as a sign of intimidation. I was a little surprised and proud at her display she was very ready for battle, But Mira and Buizel didn’t even blink. “Don’t think type advantage alone will win this battles, right Buizel!” Buizel growled in agreement.

There was a tense silence as Silver and Buizel were both poised for battle. Then I broke the silence. “Silver, use thunder shock and don’t let it get close to you.” A blot of electricity is fired at Buizel. “Buizel, use aqua jet to dodge and get in close to larvitar, then use mega kick to end this.”

With a blinding burst of speed and raging water Buizel dodged and was on larvitar before we could react and with a powerful kick sent silver flying, skipping across the shallow water. The momentum of aqua jet giving the already powerful mega kick ever more power.

“No..Silver!! You ok girl?” I shouted that was a way more powerful combination attack than we were ready for.

Buizel was firing at full throttle now, it’s aqua jet became way faster.

just as I was about it give up hope and recall Silver she began to stir struggling back to her feet. “We won’t let you get time to recover. Buizel, use aqua jet into mega kick one move time.”

It was coming, there combination attack and if it landed the match was over as Buizel began to dash towards Silver time seemed to slow to a crawl, I had to think fast or it was all over.

In desperation I could only call out an attack and trust in silver to pull it off. “Silver, use dragon rage on the ground, then use body slam.” I quickly shouted, and at the last second before Buizel’s attack could land Silver released a powerful blast of draconic energy at the ground lunching herself into the air dodging Buizel’s attack and momentarily disorienting it. “Buizel above you !” Shouted Mira, but it was too late and with a heavy crash Silver slammed into Buzel leaving it pinned beneath her.

I took the opportunity to finish the battle with one final attack. Mira knew this was a bad position “Buizel, use aqua jet to escape.” “I won’t let you silver, use thunder shock full power!!” We both shouted, the both attacks coming together in an explosion of steam and electric sparks. There was defining silence as we wait for the steam to clear and when it did Buizel was unconscious it’s eyes swirling and silver standing above it beaten and breathing heavily, she released what I could only describe as a victorious war cry. Shocked I announced “Baize is unable to battle I won…we won!! Hahaha silver you did it girl.” As I ran and scooped her up into a big celebratory hug.

The battle was closer than I thought, but we pulled it off and got the win. I looked over at the defeated Buizel as Mira returned it to its Pokeball it was a strong opponent and I know for a fact Mira would only get stronger as her journey continues.

After returning Buizel, Mira came over and with a smile on her face said she had to come over to shake my hand. "I've never battled an Islaris Larvitar before. You and your Pokémon make an amazing team."

"Thanks," I replied, feeling a warm glow of pride. "Your Pokémon were really strong too. That your Pikipek’s Aerial Ace and Buizel’s mega kick, completely caught me off guard."

We spent some time chatting, sharing stories about our journeys so far. As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, Mira glanced at her pokéwatch with a start.

"Oh wow, I didn't realize how late it was getting," she said. "I should head back to the main path if I want to make it to the next Pokémon Center before dark."

I nodded, understanding her concern. "Safe travels, Mira. Maybe we'll run into each other again sometime."

As Mira disappeared back into the underbrush, I turned to survey our little clearing. The falling sun painted the waterfall in hues of gold and pink, creating a breathtaking scene.

"What do you say we make camp here for the night?" I asked Gaia and Silver. Both Pokémon nodded their agreement.

I set about gathering firewood and clearing a space for my sleeping bag. As I worked, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's events. Two trainer battles, countless encounters with wild Pokémon, and the discovery of this hidden oasis – it had been a day full of growth and new experiences.

As night fell, I sat by the crackling fire, Gaia curled up in my lap and Silver leaning against my side. The stars began to appear overhead, countless pinpricks of light in the velvety darkness.

"We did good today, team," I murmured, stroking Gaia's soft fur. "Tomorrow, we'll press on. Who knows what other adventures await us on this island?"

As the moon glowed overhead in the starry night sky. The river and astounding tropical jungle came to life with glowing orbs of light and wild Pokémon sounds emanating from the deep jungle. I could only dream of what my team’s future holds as we grow wiser and stronger each day. With my camp fire burning i fell asleep fennekin and silver resting but on guard for any danger, as we rested beside this beautiful waterfall and stream a little off the path of route 1’s main road side ready tomorrow and the surprises that come with it.
