I stepped into Laguna Town, the scent of salt and mangroves filling my lungs. Silver, my shiny Larvitar, nuzzled against my leg as we took in the picturesque scene. Wooden boardwalks snaked between lush greenery and crystal-clear lagoons, their surfaces mirror-smooth in the late afternoon light.
"What do you think, girl?" I murmured, crouching to scratch under Silver's chin. Her scales sparkled, white with a faint electric-blue sheen. She chirped, eyes darting to take in our new surroundings.
A few locals passed by, giving us curious glances. I was used to the stares by now - a newcomer with long dreadlocks and a Pokémon unlike any they'd seen before. But Laguna Town had a laid-back vibe that put me at ease. No one seemed in a hurry here.
"First things first," I said to Silver. "We need to find the Pokémon Center."
We set off down the main boardwalk, passing quaint shops with hand-painted signs. The sweet scent of tropical flowers mingled with the briny air. In the distance, I could make out the sleek lines of what had to be the Lagoon Research Center, its modern architecture a stark contrast to the town's rustic charm.
After a few wrong turns - this place was more of a maze than I'd expected - we finally spotted the familiar red roof of a Pokémon Center. I breathed a sigh of relief.
"There it is, Silver. Let's get you and the others checked out."
As we approached the entrance, a commotion near the docks caught my attention. A crowd had gathered, their excited chatter carrying on the breeze. Curiosity piqued, I veered off course.
"What's going on?" I asked a middle-aged woman on the outskirts of the group.
She turned, her sun-weathered face breaking into a grin. "You picked a good day to arrive, miss! They've just announced the Aqua Capture Challenge."
"Aqua Capture Challenge?" I repeated, intrigued despite my weariness.
The woman nodded enthusiastically. "It's a water Pokémon catching contest. Trainers head out on boats with one partner Pokémon and try to snag the best water-types they can find. They're handing out special Dive Balls and everything!"
My fatigue evaporated. This was exactly the kind of adventure I'd come to Islaris for. "When does it start?"
"Tomorrow at dawn," she replied. "But you'd better hurry if you want to sign up. Spots are limited."
I glanced down at Silver, who looked up at me with eager eyes. "What do you say, girl? Ready for a challenge?"
She let out a determined chirp. Decision made, I elbowed my way through the crowd, Silver close on my heels. We reached a makeshift registration booth where a harried-looking official was scribbling names in a ledger.
"Is there still room?" I asked breathlessly.
He looked up, eyebrows raised at the sight of Silver. "Cutting it close, aren't you? But yeah, we've got a few spots left. Name?"
"Alyssa Ward," I replied. "And I'll be partnering with my Fennekin, Gaia."
The official paused, pen hovering over the paper. "Fennekin? You sure about that? This is a water challenge, you know."
I bristled. "I'm sure."
He shrugged. "Your funeral, kid. Here's your packet. Rules, map, and five Dive Balls. Be at the main dock at 5 AM sharp."
I took the packet, a thrill of excitement coursing through me. As we turned away, Silver gave me a quizzical look.
"I know, I know," I said. "But Gaia needs the experience. And who knows? Maybe a Grass-type will give us an edge."
We finally made it to the Pokémon Center, where I handed over my team for a much-needed checkup. While I waited, I pored over the contest rules. Five hours to catch as many water Pokémon as possible, with rarity and power factoring into the final scores. It wouldn't be easy, especially with Gaia as my partner. But I'd never been one to back down from a challenge.

The next morning came far too early. I stumbled out of bed, groggy but determined. Gaia yawned from her perch on my backpack, looking less than thrilled about our early start.
"Come on, sleepyhead," I coaxed. "Time to show these folks what a Grass-type can do on the water."
We made our way to the docks in the pre-dawn gloom. A crowd had already gathered - other contestants, event staff, and curious onlookers. The air hummed with nervous energy and the occasional splash of unseen water Pokémon.
A booming voice cut through the chatter. "Alright, trainers! Listen up!"
I turned to see a burly man with a captain's hat standing on a crate. "You've all got your Dive Balls and your maps. Remember, you've got five hours from the moment your boat leaves the dock. Any Pokémon caught after that won't count. And for Arceus' sake, be careful out there! The lagoons might look peaceful, but they can be treacherous if you're not paying attention."
He paused, scanning the crowd. His eyes landed on me and Gaia, and I saw a flicker of amusement cross his face. "Good luck to all of you. May the best trainer win!"
With that, we were ushered onto small motorboats. I settled Gaia on my lap as the captain revved the engine. She looked up at me, uncertainty in her eyes.
"We've got this," I assured her, scratching behind her ears. "Just follow my lead, okay?"
As we puttered out into the open water, the first rays of sunlight began to peek over the horizon. The lagoon was breathtaking - crystal clear water revealing a vibrant undersea world. Schools of fish darted beneath us, their scales flashing in the early morning light.
I scanned the water, searching for any sign of catchable Pokémon. "Keep your eyes peeled, Gaia," I murmured.
We'd been searching for nearly an hour with no luck when I spotted a flash of blue beneath the surface. "There!" I pointed. "Gaia, use Confusion!"
Gaia's eyes glowed as she focused her psychic energy on the shape in the water. A moment later, a startled Psyduck burst to the surface, flailing its stubby arms.
"Great job!" I cheered, readying a Dive Ball. "Now, let's catch this guy!"
The ball arced through the air, bopping the Psyduck on the head before sucking it inside in a flash of light. The ball fell into the water with a plop, bobbing on the surface as it shook once... twice... three times...
Click!
"Yes!" I pumped my fist in triumph. "Our first catch!"
Gaia yipped excitedly as I fished the Dive Ball out of the water. One down, four to go.
The next few hours passed in a blur of near-misses and small victories. We managed to snag a Magikarp and a Tentacool, but nothing that would really impress the judges. As the sun climbed higher in the sky, my spirits began to sink.
"Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all," I muttered, wiping sweat from my brow. Gaia whined sympathetically, her fur damp from the sea spray.
Just then, something caught my eye. A flash of pink beneath the surface, unlike anything I'd seen before. My heart raced. Could it be?
"Gaia, get ready," I whispered, maneuvering the boat closer.
The shape moved again, and this time I got a clear look. It was a Bulbasaur - but not like any I'd ever seen. Its bulb was a deep blue, almost like a water lily, and its skin was a soft pink that seemed to glow in the underwater light.
An Islaris variant. And if I wasn't mistaken, a shiny one at that.
"Gaia, Magical Leaf!" I commanded.
Gaia leapt into action, sending a flurry of glowing leaves slicing through the water. The Bulbasaur, caught off guard, surfaced with a startled cry.
"Now, Confusion!"
Gaia's eyes glowed once more, holding the Bulbasaur in place as it thrashed in the water. I knew this was my one shot. With a deep breath, I wound up and threw my last Dive Ball with all my might.
Time seemed to slow as the ball soared through the air. It struck the Bulbasaur dead center, enveloping it in red light. The ball splashed into the water, and I leaned over the side of the boat, heart in my throat.
One shake. Two shakes. Three...
The ball stilled, and a final 'click' echoed across the water.
For a moment, I couldn't believe it. Then reality hit, and a whoop of joy burst from my lips. "We did it, Gaia! We actually did it!"
Gaia barked happily, tail wagging as I scooped her up in a hug. As I reached for the Dive Ball, a horn blasted across the lagoon. Time was up.
We raced back to the docks, adrenaline still coursing through my veins. As we pulled up, I could see the other contestants already gathered, showing off their catches. Some had impressive hauls - Gyarados, Kingdra, even a Milotic. But I clutched my final Dive Ball, knowing I had something special.
The judges made their way down the line, examining each trainer's catches and making notes. When they reached me, I took a deep breath and released my new Bulbasaur.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as the shiny Islaris variant materialized on the dock. Its pink skin seemed to glow in the setting sun, the blue bulb on its back glistening with droplets of water.
"Well, I'll be damned," one of the judges muttered. "In all my years, I've never seen anything like it."
As they huddled to deliberate, I knelt down next to my new Pokémon. It looked up at me with curious red eyes, letting out a soft "Bulba?" I smiled, already feeling a connection forming.
"Welcome to the team," I whispered. "I think I'll call you... Coral."
The award ceremony was a blur. To my shock - and the grumbling disappointment of some of the other trainers - Coral and I took first place. As I accepted the trophy, a beautiful crystal sculpture of a leaping Magikarp, I couldn't help but grin.
This was just the beginning of our Islaris adventure. And with teammates like Silver, Gaia, and now Coral by my side, I knew we were ready for whatever challenges lay ahead.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the lagoon in shades of orange and pink, I gathered my Pokémon close. "What do you say we celebrate with some dinner, team?"
Their enthusiastic cries were all the answer I needed. Together, we set off into Laguna Town, ready to toast our victory and dream of the adventures to come.
