Chapter 14: New found confidence and Route 8

It’s now been two months since I started my journey, and as today’s sun beat down mercilessly I watched Silver launch another Thunderbolt at the battered target. The air crackled with electricity, and this time, the attack hit dead center, leaving a scorched mark on the bullseye.

"Yes!" I whooped, pumping my fist in the air. "That's it, Silver! You've got it!"

Silver preened, her metallic scales gleaming with pride. Over the past few days, she'd finally forgotten Thunder Shock, replacing it with the more powerful Thunderbolt. It was progress, slow but steady.

I turned to the rest of my team. Zephyr was perfecting his aim with Icy Wind, while A-Train practiced controlling the intensity of his Flame Charge. Gaia, ever the overachiever, was working on combining her Magical Leaf with Flash for a dazzling display.

And then there was Coral.

My shiny Islaris Bulbasaur lounged on a rock in a patch of sunlight, her blue eyes half-closed in contentment. I sighed, running a hand through my dreadlocks in frustration. I quickly stopped and calmed myself, professor Isabella’s wise words and uplifting advice from the other day keeping me grounded. It’s was strange, I thought as my mind began to think of me and the professors… friendship…. Mentorship?

I don’t know why but ever since the first day we met, I’ve felt a strong connection with the professor, it was strange I normally don’t get to close with people but every fiber of my being seems to want me to trust and leen on her for support. I wonder if… No! Not the time or place.

I shook my head my dreadlocks swaying to bring my mind back to the present. Turned my focus back to Coral still sun bathing.

"Come on, Coral," I coaxed. "Don't you want to train with the others?"

Coral yawned, stretching lazily before settling back into her sunbathing position. I was about to give up when an idea struck me. Rummaging through my bag, I pulled out a Nomel Berry I'd picked up at the market. Its sour scent wafted through the air.

Coral's eyes snapped open, suddenly alert. She lumbered to her feet, nose twitching with interest.

"You want this?" I asked, waving the berry. "Then show me what you can do."

For the first time since I'd caught her, I saw a spark of determination in Coral's eyes. She waddled over to the practice area, facing the Wobbuffet dummy with newfound focus.

What happened next left me speechless.

Coral's bulb glowed with an intense blue light, and a massive torrent of water erupted from it, slamming into the dummy with enough force to send it flying. The attack was followed by a barrage of razor-sharp leaves that sliced through the air with deadly precision.

I stood there, mouth agape, as Coral turned to me with a smug expression. It hit me then – I hadn't just gotten lucky with a critical capture. I'd caught a powerhouse who'd been content to hide her strength until properly motivated.

"Holy Arceus," I breathed. "Coral, that was... incredible."

She ambled over, claiming her prize with a satisfied "Bulba." As she munched on the Nomel Berry, I couldn't help but laugh. I'd misjudged her completely, and she'd just schooled me in the most spectacular way possible.

The next day, with my pocket considerably lighter from splurging on sour treats for Coral, I decided it was time for a shopping trip. My Unova clothes weren't cutting it in the tropical Solaris climate, and my team deserved some rewards for their hard work.

The Laguna Town market was a riot of color and noise. Stalls overflowed with vibrant fabrics, exotic fruits, and all manner of Pokémon goods. I browsed through racks of breezy sundresses and shorts, eventually settling on a few outfits that wouldn't leave me sweating buckets.

As I was picking out Pokémon food, a commotion at a nearby stall caught my attention. A crowd had gathered around what looked like a Pokémon breeder's stand. Curiosity piqued, I wandered over.

The moment I got close, the breeder's eyes locked onto Silver and Coral. His jaw dropped.

"Great Giratina," he breathed. "Are those... are those shiny Islaris variants?"

Before I knew it, I was surrounded by eager breeders, all clamoring to get a closer look at my Pokémon. Offers to trade flew at me from all directions, each more outrageous than the last.

"I'll give you my prized Islaris Charizard for that Larvitar!"

"Name your price for the Bulbasaur! I've got rare eggs, battle-ready Pokémon, anything you want!"

I backed away, holding up my hands. "They're not for sale or trade," I said firmly. "Silver and Coral are my partners, not commodities."

The lead breeder, a portly man with a impressive mustache, looked disappointed but nodded respectfully. "I understand. But... would you consider letting us examine them? It would be invaluable for our research. We could offer you a discount on our products in exchange."

I glanced at Silver and Coral. Silver looked wary, but Coral seemed intrigued by a plush Snorlax toy in the stall. "Alright," I agreed cautiously. "But only if they're comfortable with it. And I want that Snorlax toy and a discount on your special Pokémon food."

The breeder's face lit up. "Deal!"

An hour later, with a new Snorlax toy for Coral and bags of discounted gourmet Pokémon food, I headed to the Pokémon Center. It was time to move on, to test our newfound strength against some real challenges.

Nurse Joy greeted me with her usual warmth. "Heading out, Alyssa?"

I nodded. "Yeah, I'm thinking of challenging the Coralport City gym. I've heard a lot about Marina."

Joy's expression turned apologetic. "Oh, I'm afraid Marina might not be at the gym right now. There's a big surfing contest starting next week in Wavecrest Village. She competes every year."

My face fell. "Oh. I guess I'll have to wait then."

"Well," Joy said thoughtfully, "there is another option. Route 8 circles the Safari Zone and connects all of Aquarilla's cities and towns. It's faster than going back through Route 1, and you could make it to Wavecrest in about a week – just in time for the contest."

I perked up. "That sounds perfect!"

Joy's smile faltered slightly. "Just be careful. Wild Pokémon from the Safari Zone sometimes wander onto the route. It can be dangerous."

I patted my Pokéballs confidently. "We can handle it. Thanks, Nurse Joy!"

The next morning, I set out on Route 8. The path skirted the edge of dense jungle, the calls of unfamiliar Pokémon echoing from its depths. Despite the occasional nervous glance over my shoulder, the first day passed uneventfully.

On the second day, everything changed.

I was walking along a particularly narrow stretch of path, steep cliffs on one side and impenetrable jungle on the other, when the ground began to shake. A deafening roar split the air, and suddenly, an enormous Pokémon burst from the trees.

It was like no Rampardos I'd ever seen. Its rocky hide sparkled with an otherworldly sheen, and its eyes glowed with a pink light that spoke of Fairy-type energy. But more than anything, it radiated pure, uncontrolled rage.

"Oh, shit," I breathed, fumbling for my Pokéballs. "Everyone, out! Now!"

My team materialized, immediately sensing the danger. The Islaris Rampardos bellowed, pawing the ground like an enraged Tauros.

"Silver, Thunderbolt! Zephyr, Icy Wind! A-Train, Flame Charge! Gaia, Magical Leaf! Coral... uh, do that water thing again!"

My Pokémon sprang into action, but their attacks seemed to only enrage the Rampardos further. It charged, head lowered, aiming straight for me.

"Scatter!" I yelled, diving to the side. The Rampardos crashed into a boulder, shattering it to pieces.

As it turned for another charge, I noticed Gaia's fur beginning to glow. The sun seemed to intensify, and I felt a surge of energy course through me and my other Pokémon. Flower Gift – Gaia's hidden ability!

"Everyone, focus your attacks!" I commanded. "Silver, another Thunderbolt! Coral, hit it with everything you've got!"

The air crackled with electricity as Silver unleashed a massive bolt of lightning. At the same time, Coral, spurred on by the sour Nomel Berry I'd hastily tossed her way, fired off a devastating combo of Hydro Pump and Razor Leaf.

The supercharged attacks struck the Rampardos head-on. It staggered, letting out a pained roar that shook the cliffs. For a moment, it stood there, swaying. Then, with a final, defeated growl, it turned and lumbered back into the jungle.

I slumped to the ground, heart pounding. My Pokémon gathered around me, exhausted but triumphant. As the adrenaline faded, I realized just how close we'd come to disaster.

"Good job, everyone," I said shakily. "Especially you, Gaia. And Coral... remind me to never underestimate you again."

Coral huffed proudly, while Gaia nuzzled against my leg. Silver stood guard, her eyes scanning the treeline for any sign of the Rampardos's return.

As we rested, catching our breath and treating our injuries, I couldn't help but feel a mix of terror and exhilaration. We'd faced our first real test as a team and come out on top. But more than that, we'd discovered hidden strengths in each other.

I looked at my team – battered, tired, but standing tall. We'd grown stronger, not just in terms of power, but in our bond as a unit. Whatever challenges lay ahead in Wavecrest Village and beyond, I knew we'd face them together.

With a groan, I pushed myself to my feet. "Alright, gang. Let's keep moving. We've got a surfing contest to catch... and maybe a gym badge to win."

As we continued down Route 8, the calls of wild Pokémon seemed a little less threatening. We'd proven ourselves against one of the Safari Zone's terrors. Now, it was time to show the rest of the Solaris region what we were made of.

The path ahead was long and undoubtedly full of more challenges. But for the first time since starting this journey, I felt truly ready to face them. With my mismatched team of Islaris variants by my side, I was beginning to believe that anything was possible.

Wavecrest Village awaited, and with it, the next chapter of our adventure. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink, I allowed myself a small smile. We were on our way, growing stronger with every step.

And who knew? Maybe by the time we reached Wavecrest, we'd be ready for anything the Solaris region could throw at us. Even a Gym Leader who could surf with the best of them.
