“Hey… hey… Mullam, wake up,”
Roska’s voice wafted into Mullam’s dull dreams, she shrugged him awake. He woke up and looked around his surroundings. He was in his office, in front of his white board, with Roska beside him.
“Hey Ms Roska…” he asked. “What’s going on?”
“I think I figured it out.” She said, smiling nervously. He jerked up.
“Really? Ganz’s spell?” Mage Mullam asked. “Are you serious?”
“I’m not sure… but I really think so.” She said.
“Well, what have you figured out?” He asked.
“Well,” she began as Mullam got into position, “It would’ve been an extremely complicated spell, but here’s the most likely way he did it… You know how field spells always take a spherical form?”
“Yeah…?” Mullam began. “They extend around the spell evenly in all directions.”
“Yeah exactly. They’re perfectly symmetrical, but what if they didn’t have to be?” Roska began.
Mullam furrowed his eyebrows. “Explain?”
“Well the city of Pirun is about 3 miles in diameter. That means the spell dampener exists as a huge ball that goes 3 miles in every direction.”
“Okay…?” Mullam said. “How is that relevant?”
“So that means if you’re anywhere within 3 miles of the spell dampener core, whether you’re 3 miles up in the sky, 3miles underground, or 3 miles in any other direction, you would still be in the dampener.” Roska replied. “But what if you were 4 miles up in the sky?”
“Well you would be out of the spell dampner, of course,” Mullam said, “But they didn’t go anywhere near that high.”
“Yes, but according to Captain Rodo’s account, the field spell happened in only one specific location; the divine level.” Roska said.
“Are you saying Ganz somehow moved the divine level 3 miles into the sky?” Mullam asked in utter confusion.
“Of course not!” Roska exclaimed. “You would require a field spell inside the dampener to do that in the first place.”

“So what are you saying?” Mullam asked.
“I’m saying someone made it so that the spell dampener was no longer a ball,’ Roska said. “instead, it became a very very flattened spheroid.”
The realization hit mullam like a brick.
“Oh my Goodness…” he said… “someone made the spell dampener bubble so flat that the divine level was above it.”
“Exactly.” Roska said. “That’s why when they attacked they moved as fast as possible to the Divine level so they could get there before the experienced war mages found them.”
“So that’s why Ganz killed them immediately.” Mullam said. “If they’d been given enough time to realize they were outside the dampener, things could’ve gone very bad for the attackers.”
“Exactly.” Roska said. “Someone flattened the dampener for just a few seconds. In those few seconds, Ganz quickly deployed a field spell, and murdered his victims before they could realize what was happening.”
Mullam sat down in shock, processing what he’d just heard… Then he perked up.
“Well, okay reshaping a field spell is kind of possible, I guess, but how exactly did they do it? Mullam asked. “Don’t you kind of need another field spell to do it?”
“Yes you do.” Roska said. “I’m telling you someone literally went three and a half miles into the sky above pirun, deployed a field spell, and used it to crush down the spell dampner until it flattened down below the Divine level. It lasted only a few seconds, just fast enough for Ganz to use it, then it immediately went back up.”
“That’s an insane level of co-ordination.” Mullam said.
“Yes, exactly.” Roska said. “There’s literally no way they would’ve been able to communicate with each other, so they would’ve had to painstakingly measure and rehearse the move.”
“Your theory makes sense but there’s a lot of problems with it though.” Mullam said, furrowing his brow. “How did someone get three miles up into the sky? Not even speed can give you that kind of jump. Also a few seconds? I’m not sure you could rehearse to that level of precision, there would have to be instantaneous communication between all of them.”
“Mullam that’s not possible.” Roska said. “I’m telling you they rehearsed it, which is more likely? That they have a wave spell that allows a dozen people to communicate at the same time, or that a bunch of well determined men prepared for a battle of life and death?”
After a few minutes of silence, Mullam had to agree. “Okay but how did they get 3 miles up?”
“I have a theory, it’s wild,” Roska said, grinning. “But I think they literally just climbed the spell dampener from the outside, like a giant, smooth mountain.”
“What?” Mullam asked, blinking in disbelief. “Also how long have I been asleep for? Did you really just figure all of this out now?”
“I’ve had the idea for a while,” Roska said. “but there was no way to prove it until I figured out how they got to the top of the spell dampener.”
“And you have the solution figured out?” Mullam asked.
“I have an idea, But I need help testing it.” Roska said, smiling nervously. Mullam looked at her apprehensively…
