Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The gates of Pirun City turned out to be useless. In the dark of the night, with them fully closed, there was a full scale invasion happening inside the city, starting from its center.

Pirun was engulfed in chaos. There was pandemonium as people fled in every possible direction, not knowing exactly what they were running from, nor where they should run to. High up in the floating castles of the royalty, less than a dozen intruders were destroying the Royal Army.

Magical spells were flying back and forth, the smell of burning paper filled the air as the spells they contained were unleashed in a flurry of magical combat, but it was clear who was superior. The intruders unleashed sharp bursts of energy that sliced through the military’s advanced defense spells, while their own defense spells were virtually unbreakable.

The invaders made their way up the castles. Jumping from one floating tower to another and running vertically up them, brushing aside attacks from Army Wizards stationed above. In mere minutes they’d reached the Divine Level, knocking unconscious every wizard in their way, but not killing them.

The Divine Level was a collection of six towers arranged around in a circle with a courtyard in between them. All six towers were connected to the courtyard via stone bridges. The courtyard was decorated with various statues intertwined with ornamental plants and flowers and at the very center there was a beautiful fountain made of white limestone. The entire structure floated approximately 300 meters off the ground, suspended only by magical spring spells that had been cast by brilliant masons almost a century prior.

The courtyard and bridges were lined up with a balustrade to prevent fools from falling off, and the now invading force latched on to them to launch themselves into the top level. The night was quiet up here, The absolute mayhem happening 300 meters away seemed so far away now, up here the calming sound of frogs and crickets were louder. The Invaders, six of them, came together as if to discuss, but before anything could be said a different figure launched into the courtyard from the opposite side.

He was a short and bearded man who was very old but clearly was very dangerous. The invaders launched energy attacks at him immediately and somersaulted away at superhuman speed lest they be caught in a counterattack. The smoke and smell of burning paper trailed their quick movements.

He muttered his own spell and countered their attacks, muttered another spell and the ground they landed on grabbed onto their feet. Trapping them in place, Yet another spell and weak flames appeared from nowhere to engulf them.

But they muttered their own spells and got free. Each one of them had a different spell they used. Some of them exploded the ground beneath them and jumped away, yet others used spells that snuffed the fire, then ripped their feet out of the ground, as if superhuman. They closed in on their attacker, launching attack after attack which he deftly blocked or dodged. While the fighting was going on, another person jumped into the courtyard from below. He wasn’t on the side of the invaders.

Three minutes later, there were three Pirun fighters against the six invaders. Their skills were now evenly matched, and the speed at which they moved would’ve been impossible to follow for the average person. Zipping back and forth and launching magical attacks against each other.

The tide was turning against the six invaders, until a 7th figure jumped on the courtyard. He observed the ongoing fight for a short period, and then, muttering a single spell, all three Pirun fighters were suddenly yanked from their positions towards him at an impossible speed, as if pulled by a giant magnet

He was waiting for them with his sword and as their bodies flung towards him, he cut them down mercilessly. It was over in an instant. The six Initial invaders did not wait to celebrate, as soon as the Pirun fighters were down they springed to the largest tower amongst the six and burst inside. At the same time, a young man and an old woman burst out of one of the windows of the tower and dropped down below.

The six made after them.

They fell 300 meters and instead of splatting into the ground, they muttered a spell that broke their fall and transmitted it into a forward motion.they broke into a run with the six invaders in hot pursuit.

They were now on Pirun grounds where shops and houses were being burned, and mobs chased around confused citizens with whips, the man and woman darted down the streets at superhuman speed, making for the gates of Pirun. The six invaders pursued

Through stalls, rooftops and house windows the chase continued, then it moved on to level one floating dwellings just a few meters above PIrun, where the top floors of the multistorey buildings on the ground mixed with the bottom floors of the floating towers. They ran from roof to porch to roof, making for the gate, every few kilometers, muttering new spells to maintain their superhuman speeds and strengths. Puffs of smoke wafted off from burning paper wrapped up like scotch tape and inserted into pouches on their belts.

The walls of Pirun were not very tall, only a few meters tall, indeed they weren’t really defensive walls, They marked the boundary of the city and deterred low-level criminals who lacked the ability to use powerful military spells. Ever since the invention of paper spell binding, conventional warfare had quickly become outdated, most cities abandoned the idea of large standing armies, high walls, and weaponry. Magic became the sole arbiter of military strength, and those who could wield magic quickly and expertly became the most influential people on the continent of Doyia.

Almost every city in Doyia had a massive magic damper spell within its walls. It resisted magic. The more powerful the magic was, the more it pushed against said magic. These wizards that were currently speeding towards the gate were limited to speedster and strength spells, as well as minor energy and element spells, the kind of gravity pull that had been used to kill the Pirun fighters on the Divine level should not have been possible, even though the 7th fighter had made it seem easy, it would’ve taken an extreme amount of energy concentration that was out of the grasp of pretty much everyone.

That’s why Captain Rodo decided to take the queen and flee.

Now he was almost at the gate with six invaders on his hot pursuit. The queen, a 50 year old woman, held on tightly to him as he piggybacked her. His plan was to exit the city gates and launch his powerful hellfire spell to hopefully engulf the invaders and burn them alive, he only hoped they didn’t have insanely powerful spells of their own.

Only a few more kilometers to go… he glanced back for just a second and almost got his nose sliced off by an extremely precise energy blast that was more of a blade. He faltered and lost his footing, his speedster spell flung him sideways like a golf ball, he cast a righting spell and landed on his feet, blasting forward towards the gate. Now he knew they wanted him… or the queen alive. He kept running.

A few meters in front of the gate, the superhuman 7th figure slid into his field of view and blasted him backwards. Thinking quickly, He summoned a vector spell and converted the incoming momentum to an upward movement, launching up and above the 7th figure and the wall behind him. For a split second, as if in slow motion, he locked eye contact with the 7th figure as he flew… His fierce gaze was met with cold uncaring eyes set on a grim face and slightly glowing yellow eyes, probably a night vision spell.

The moment he was out of the spell dampener he invoked his spell

“Dana Kufa!”

A fire ball formed around him instantly, cool as a breeze on the inside, hot as molten lava on the outside… flares came out of the ball and lunged directly at the six invaders. They stopped short of the wall too and the fires dissipated the moment it crossed over into the city.

The fiery ball remained around Rodo as he ran, never stopping, through the main road that led away from Pirun City. The 7 invaders collected on top of the battlements and watched the ball zip down the road away from Pirun City, Scorching every plant within a 2 meter radius.

He knew exactly where to go… Aku’anda.
