Outcast Prince
13. The New Maid

13. The New Maid

We have previously seen the appearance of a maidservant who worked for the prince's chambers. She went to bed intending to go to work the next morning.

But then she woke up not as herself but as another woman called Nusi who also woke up and found herself in a different world.

Nusi sat up on the bed quite confused. Was this a test? She wondered. Or were the memories that kept flooding her mind, which were the thoughts of the maid, true? That she had returned in time to an era which awaited the invasion of Ururu?

If the memories were anything to go by, then she had to investigate further to know what was at stake.

She stood up and got ready for the palace where she worked.

As she walked, she observed the way the people mingled. Whenever she stopped for some reason, she felt certain that this wasn't a dream but a reality. Her reality for now.

Whatever it was, this was more elaborate to be called a dream, for however vivid a dream is, it cannot be as detailed as this.

The thing that upsets her most at the moment is the thought of the brothers she left behind, Elias and Spoon. How would they react to her absence? Were they still waiting for her to come back home from her trials?

But not everyone who went to the trials returns.

And what about Prince Raphael Nazareth, who had helped them? Would he still help her brothers while she was away?

These and other thoughts flooded her mind as she walked towards the palace, and even as she went in to announce her arrival and signed the register.

Not long after she had started her chores, she heard the sounds and movements associated with the launching of cultivation.

It sounded quite close to her, which it wasn't. It was a place specially maintained for training and somewhere for the prince to have a princely relaxation. That was why it startled her to hear such movements at these early hours.

She swept around the place but decided not to enter the spot the sounds were coming from.

Since the job required that servants started working by dawn, the sun rose as she swept. As she stood up to adjust her pose, she spotted Musa, one of the kitchen staff that she was acquainted with.

Musa was holding so much food in his hands that he looked quite overwhelmed. He had some on a wooden cart and still others in his hand.

When she noticed how overwhelmed he seemed she decided to help him. It wouldn't hurt to give him a hand especially as he was old, would it? She wondered.

So she dropped her broom and approached him.

"No, no," Musa protested. "You need not worry, just go on with your work."

"It is no bother, let me help," she said resolutely.

After arguing for some moments, Musa gave up. He knew that he could do with some help as the loads he was carrying were more than he could cope with for long.

The prince wouldn't be thrilled to have his food spilled all over the ground. And at the rate things were going, he was certain that one day very soon, he could do just that.

And this was only his first trip from the kitchen, what would happen in his second and third journeys?

So he decided to trust her with some of his burdens since he saw that she was always well-behaved. She always kept aloof from all the dramas of palace maids.

So he allowed her to take the big pot and the bread basket from his hand and he set the lead as he pushed the cart forward.

They entered the prince's chambers and went straight to the dining area.

Nusi was surprised when they met him at the dining table already waiting. One thing she knew through her experience was that princes and every aristocrat were rather proud even when eating. Preceding the food wasn't their habit. It was supposed to be always the other way around.

She tucked her thoughts away and proceeded to arrange the table.

They bowed low and greeted the prince afterwards and Musa introduced her to him.

"Your Highness," said Musa with another bow. "This is one of the palace maids and her name is Nusi."

Armad glanced up at her appraisingly but didn't speak.

They went away to bring in the next course and Musa noticed that Armad didn't show any signs of disapproval. This calmed Musa's anxiety somewhat.

He needed help with the cooking and service, but he didn't want to put any of his kitchen staff in the matter. The more he brings them closer, the more questions that would arise.

This would make it all his fault if anything were to go wrong. But this sensible young lady who wasn't among the kitchen staff would be quite an ideal assistant.

He urgently needed an assistant, but the thought of what the prince would think of it always stopped him from finding one.

Just then, he heard the voice of the prince speaking. "Seat yourselves and eat." He said.

Musa looked up in confusion and the maid began to tremble. Did they do something wrong? Or was the prince suspicious of them?

But his face wasn't unfriendly, he was smiling.

The maid frowned when she saw this. Who was she to get a smile from the prince?! If the inherited memories were true, then the man seated before her wasn't a mere peasant but a prince. The second son to King Arion. The Arion she has heard many tales of. The famous Arion. The one who challenged Ururu.

Something occurred to her just then. Perhaps this wasn't part of the trial after all. The designated trial of Micro Abbas that she had all along been a participant in.

Perhaps her appearance here had nothing to do with Micro Abbas. Perhaps she has traveled back in time to protect humanity from the scourge of Ururu, to warn them of the coming of Ururu, and to do her best to stop the slave trade.

The biggest thing that pushed her brothers Elias and Spoon in jeopardy was the sale of their parents into slavery. She found herself in trouble after Ururu locked her city. She was forced to change her identity to survive.

What would happen if she appeared in this era and used the time wisely?

What would happen if she came back in time and vanquished Ururu? Wouldn't the problem be solved then?

As soon as she thought of this she realized that she was taken back in time to this particular era for a reason. It was known that nothing ever happened without a purpose. She was convinced that she appeared here for a reason...

Slowly, she realized that the man before her may be the key to her puzzle. She had returned in time through the body of a palace maid.

Perhaps she was brought back to help the prince fight Ururu and stop them from the evil they were plotting to unleash. The story of the Ururu invasion was all there in history.

"Your Highness." She said with a curtsey. "There is food reserved for us."

Armad nodded. "Of course. But I am telling you now to sit down and eat. It is an order." He said.

When they heard that, the duo quickly pulled out chairs and sat down even before he could finish.

But according to the customs, servants mustn't sit on the same type of chairs or even face their prince when eating. So they pulled out chairs equal to their status and sat down. Armad was okay with this so he didn't object.

But at that moment, he was experiencing something amazing at the first sight of the young girl. The system showed him a message. A message that amazed him. As he gave them his order, a message box appeared right before him.

[You have stumbled upon an omen. You have stumbled upon one of the people who are from the same timeframe as you, and traveled through the same medium as you did. This young woman called Nusi has come from the same world and timeframe as you. She appeared here and incarnated in the body of the young girl that stood before you. But System doesn't detect any signs of malice from her towards you. If anything, for some reason unknown to the System, she wishes to help you.]

Armad re-read the message just to make sure. It was quite convenient that only Armad could see the message and he alone could hear the System. So he had no fear of anyone apart from himself overhearing their discussion.

To drive away any suspicion, he merely fixed his eyes on the spot where the message appeared, but he could see Nusi in the periphery of his vision. But to all appearances, his eyes weren't on her at all.

He served himself some of the food but in his mind, he was eagerly waiting for them to leave so he could get to work.

When he was done, he sat back in his chair and watched around. The two servants served themselves rather fearfully and ate, and as soon as they were finished they stood up to leave. They were almost to the door when Armad spoke.

P

"You said her name is Nusi." He said. Musa nodded in surprise. Armad had never stopped him before and this wasn't the first time he had served him food. It was clear to see that he was detained because of the girl he brought along with him. The question about her name confirmed his suspicion. But he couldn't pinpoint a reason why a prince of all men could care to know about a maid.

A maid that couldn't match any of the women that could rightly stand before him.

But then, the prince probably wanted to test if the maid could keep secrets. Or perhaps he wanted to make sure they weren't conniving to do some mischief.

But then, Musa realized that he had no say in all of these as all that was expected of him was to follow orders.

So he nodded again. "That is her name your highness. She works here, sweeping the vicinity of your lounge and cleaning the stables."

Armad frowned when he heard this. He had always thought that if others like him had incarnated, then they would end up incarnating in other elite personalities.

But this one incarnated in the body of a lowly maid, though her work wasn't that tedious. But still. What was happening exactly? He wondered not for the first time.

"You can leave." He said addressing Musa. "And, you, come back and sit down." He said turning to her.

Thus giving his orders, Armad concentrated on his plate and resumed eating.
