The Monday Case – Part 13

CAKE

Monday sat at the end of the conference table eating the cake that Tuesday had made. She’d made it from scratch, not a box – no one said anything about it.

“The decorations are nice,” Friday said.

“Thanks,” Tuesday replied.

“The hard hats are a nice touch,” Monday added.

Wednesday stopped poking at the cake with his fork. “I’m sorry about ruining your day off.”

“C’mon,” Monday said. “We’re trying to enjoy the party Tuesday put together.”

“Yeah, but I just feel really bad about it.”

Tuesday gave up on the wedge of cake in front of her. “Even Monday forgot about it. You gotta lighten up on yourself.”

“It was on the calendar,” Thursday said quietly.

Friday sat back down with a second slice. “Sure, but no one looks at that thing.”

Friday could feel Thursday’s gaze despite not being able to see their eyes under the hood. He was actually unsure if Thursday had eyes or even any face under the hoodie. “Okay, besides you, no one looks at the calendar.”

“I’ve just been so tired,” Monday said.

“Too busy,” Tuesday added.

Wednesday tried a taste of the frosting alone and found it palatable. “It’s actually Friday’s job to know when Monday has a day off.”

“Hey, what makes it my job?”

“It’s in the handbook,” Wednesday said. “The day before a Weekday is going to be out, it is the Weekday before’s job to remind everyone else.”

“I don’t remember reading that,” Monday said.

Wednesday shrugged. “It’s in there.”
