Chapter 5: Getting Fired

Seeing the quest, Vikram got an idea of what he needed to do and rushed outside the village in order to hunt some demon hounds. He didn't know what they looked like nor had he ever heard about them but since it was a beginner's quest it was bound to be easy.

At least that's what Vikram thought before he met his death by being torn apart and eaten by a bunch of demonic hounds. He was not at all expecting the demonic hounds to be at level 10.

Unlike the fight with the soldiers where he lost his cool and couldn't even scratch his opponent with his sword, he was now able to attack the demonic hounds and do some damage, even if it accounted for only a small percentage, before getting torn apart by the hounds.

Vikram soon woke up and put away his headgear while gasping for breath, the pain sensors were adjusted to low by default but still getting torn to pieces by a bunch of demonic hounds wasn't a very good experience. The creators wanted to keep things real by a lot so they made sure that no one could disable the pain sensors, it increased the difficulty of the game and also made it more real.

There have been rumours that some players lost their consciousness in the real world after manually setting their pain sensitivity to a hundred per cent and from his experience at the default lowest setting, Vikram had no intentions of increasing the pain sensitivity by even a tiny bit.

Now that he was dead, it meant that he can't access his account for the next six hours. It was quite a drag. It was around nine in the morning and normally it was the time for him to go out for work but he felt that he felt like taking a day off today and called out his contractor about him not being able to come today.

"You bastard! Do you think this job is a joke? I was so kind enough to give a kid like you a job that paid well enough to feed you daily and you want a day off! I'll find some other bastard like you, no need to come to the construction site from today onwards, piss off." The voice at the other end of the phone said and hung up.

After listening to a flurry of abuses from his contractor which ended with him being removed from his contracted work Vikram was now in a sour mood. He went to the washroom to wash his face to cool himself down.

'Is it too much to ask for a day off? I should be able to take a day off whenever I want to. Yes, I can't let my life be dictated by others anymore. I need to become independent enough to make sure that I work for nobody so that I'm not again put in a position where I need to request a day off from someone.' Vikram thought to himself as he looked at himself in the mirror with water still dripping down his face.

"I will change this person in the mirror soon. Just wait" Vikram said to himself as he turned around and left the washroom after wiping his face.

He went towards his old computer and booted it up. After waiting for some time for his old computer to start, Vikram opened up the online forum of Odyssey. The forum, just like the game was quite crowded with some people spending even most of their day chatting here.

Vikram typed the keyword 'Demon' and pressed enter. There were some results but after going through them he realized that they were all random stuff not related to the game. He then changed the keyword to 'race' and searched 'other races except for humans in Odyssey.' The results this time were a bit promising. Apparently, the top guilds were currently doing a mission together which has given them hints about the existence of the 'elf race' through the relics they procured while dsoing the mission.

Seeing this, Vikram got the answer to his doubts, he was the only one who had knowledge regarding the existence of the demon race and he must use this opportunity to the fullest.

Vikram was very familiar with the quote, 'Knowledge is power" and if he used the benefit of being the only player in the demon race then he would be able to easily pile up a lot of money and money is what is needed at the moment to solve most of his problems now that he was unemployed.

Betting everything on the game Vikram kept browsing through the forum in order to get familiar with the happenings of the game. He only used to watch news related to Odyssey in his free time. He didn't have the in-depth knowledge which was easily available in the forum. He never felt the need to read it because from his economic situation being able to play the game was like a dream to him.

That's how Vikram spent his morning before he stood up from his seat all cramped up and after stretching for a while, he went to the kitchen to prepare lunch for himself. After filling up his stomach he checked the time and there were still more than one and a half hours left before he would be able to access his account.

Vikram decided to take an afternoon nap during this time. It was natural to become a bit sluggish after eating lunch so after setting up an alarm he went to sleep.

*Beep Beep Beep*

Waking up to the sound of an alarm Vikram switched it off and yawned. Seeing that it was time he picked up his headgear and wore it, directly entering the game without much thought.

Vikram soon found himself spawned in the same courtyard as before. This time though, instead of rushing towards the demonic hounds like a madman he walked towards the village. At the entrance, he made sure to greet the guards who just harrumphed at him.

'Guess it will take a while to improve my image in front of them.' Vikram thought to himself before entering the village.
