A2:C1 - Return of Nyx :: Part Three

However, instead of seeing his friends smiling faces, prepared to mock him as they messed about, Bob's eyes locked onto the shiny, metallic tip of a rapidly approaching object.

Before his mind could even comprehend what he was seeing, let alone react, a small dagger had already buried itself deep into Bob's right eye, smashed past the medial wall and into his brain, instantly ending his life.

Even before the thrust had come to a stop, a small, delicate hand abruptly twisted the handle, causing the knife that had pierced Bob's eye to snap with a sharp, metallic sound.

Lightly kicking off the floor and using the momentum caused by the breaking knife, a feminine silhouette appeared above Bob's head in the blink of an eye.

Without a moment's delay, a bare, pale foot slammed into the back of the dead man's head, sending his body flying into the alley while the petite figure flashed across the cobblestone road and onto a dimly lit side street on the opposite side.

A few of the lookouts nearby felt like they had spotted something in their peripheral, like a streak of white light, or had heard a metallic clang, but by the time they had turned their heads, neither the mysterious attacker or Bob could be seen.

The street was eerily silent and uneventful, causing most to lose interest and return their attention to their own areas, highlighting the lax training of the guards and private security.

Landing silently on the cold, hard ground, a naked woman dispersed her momentum with a roll before quickly moving towards a nearby wall.

While the roads and streets behind her were brightly lit, the street the woman found herself on was only illuminated by a few, dim streetlights. There was still enough daylight to see, but due to the impending storm above and the fact that there were no guards or soldiers with a line of sight on her current position, the woman took the chance for a much-needed rest.

If anyone one were to see her now, given that most had already been given a description of the mysterious, primordial beast that was rampaging around the city, they would be able to easily recognise the woman's identity.

Nyx greedily sucked in air, causing her bare chest to rise and fall dramatically, as she rubbed her knees and revealed a sour, almost sulking look on her face. "What the hell have they put in those lights?"

"And why the fuck does it only affect me? What am I, some sort of devil dancing around a church while sprinkling holy water over myself?" grumbled Nyx, her quiet voice instantly lost amongst the frantic, almost panicked, sounds in the distance.

Although Nyx had quickly regained her rationality during the arduous pursuit, feeling like a fish in water as she assassinated opponents which, in her eyes, only had weak skills and abilities, Nyx had a strange, foreboding feeling that something wasn't quite right.

While she couldn't put her finger on the root cause of her unease, she had discovered other strange, if not slightly worrying issues.

The most troublesome issue she had discovered was that any bright source of light, not only weakened her abilities significantly but also caused her skin to sting as if an army of red ants were attempting to devour her flesh.

While Nyx was slightly concerned about what she would do if natural sunlight caused a similar reaction, as she wasn't used to worrying about what might be, her previous lives being relatively short, this issue was quickly pushed to the back of her mind.

The next strange thing she noticed, which had been highlighted by the young man earlier, was far more interesting to Nyx as she believed that it might be able to use it as a weapon.

Even though he was at death's door, having had a glass shard embedded deep into his neck, the young man hadn't been the first person to space out as they looked into Nyx's eyes during her escape.

Initially, Nyx had been pleased as it aided her with a couple of kills. However, after realising the strange look in their eyes, she couldn't help but feel a peculiar feeling appearing in the pit of her stomach.

Moving her hands over her face, feeling for anything that would be different or weird, not really understanding why she would feel concerned, Nyx could only sigh and shake her head before banishing the irrelevant thoughts.

She knew that now wasn't the time to seek answers to these questions and each second she wasted, was a second that she gave to the enemy for free.

Deciding she would only delay for a few seconds more, circulating her essence to energise her muscles, Nyx took a quick glance across the street.

Seeing the glowing stones that had been set up to trap her, Nyx released a charming, yet defiant, smile.

She had once again broken through her enemies encirclement and, as long as she kept the advantage, even with her new weakness to the glow stones, as long as the world wasn't suddenly bathed in light, they would find it hard to pin her down.

Allowing her head to tilt as she listened to the chaotic sounds that she had generated, Nyx's smile slowly grew before, in the blink of an eye, vanishing.

Even though this level of pursuit was nothing compared to what she had experienced before on the second and first continents, Nyx knew that she couldn't relax in the slightest.

Not only was she living proof that the underdog could take on, and kill, the strongest, but she was in a body much weaker than her previous incarnations.

Taking a deep breath, Nyx decided she would continue to head towards more densely populated areas. Not only would a higher civilian count restrict the power and skills of her opponents, especially large-scale area of effect moves, but would hopefully create more chaos in which she could find leverage.

Having caught her breath, Nyx slowly rose from her position, the white skin of her naked body entirely out of place against the dark stone wall, and started moving away from the bright lights and towards what she believed to be the residential area of the city.
