In 2003, just before the invasion by Lothor, nine Ninja Academy cadets were being tested. A competition between the three schools, Wind, Thunder and Fire, to find a lost scroll on a lost island. The test was devised to find those who qualify to be Power Rangers. One member of the Thunder team gets separated from her teammates and races to beat the Fire team to be the first to find the scroll. Upon entering the cave that holds the scroll, an ancient device is activated, and the foursome is transported to a distant planet.
The desert home planet of the wise and ancient Ninjor, has been in urmoil in recent years. Though at peace for centuries the two tribes that make up the inhabitants of the planets, the Ninjetti and the Youkaitto, skirmishes have begun the breakout. Long dormant, the Skull Temple upon Youkai Mountain has awakened with it the former royal family of the Youkaitto tribe. Once again, they are attempting to control the planet and enslave the Ninjetti.
Returning to his home in turmoil, Ninjor does his best to begin training the Ninjetti to defend their homes, but many have grown lax in their way of life, and they lose more and more ground as time goes on. The arrival of the four Earth Ninjas is both a surprise and a releif, especially when it's revealed that they are Power Rangers.
Randi Scott is the only Thunder ninja to have been transported to the Shogunatta planet. Mikey Hanson, Donny Donnatelli, and Mai Li Yeoh are Fire Ninjas that must now team up with Randi to find out what happened to them. They are joined by Dex Ro, the only Morph capable Ninjetti. They must defend the planet and find their way home.
