Awakening pt. 1

Awakening pt. 1

Midnight woke up. She didn't remember anything from before, but she could feel unfamiliar powers in her body.

"The test subject is awake. All vital signs are stable. Steady feedback is being received from the monitoring platform." The scientists in the room chattered away. She couldn't understand at first, but the longer she listened, the more she began to understand from their words.

"Increased brain activity detected. She seems to be learning from what she's hearing." The reports kept coming in. Eventually, a sound seemed to drown out their words, making her unable to hear anything more. It lasted for a while and then faded away slowly.

"Restoring the test subject's sight." With that report, Midnight could see. She blinked rapidly, trying to adjust to the sudden lights shining in her eyes. Even as her vision adjusted, she continued to listen keenly, taking in as much information as she could. She didn't know why she was doing it, but she found it interesting to keep learning more.

Her eyes soon adjusted, and she found that she was looking directly at some bright lights. She had a feeling she could control them, and so she willed them to lower their intensity. They did so, much to the surprise of the scientists, who she couldn't see.

"Her technomancer abilities have awakened. She can use them without training either." This voice was different; she hadn't heard it speak before then. She also picked up another unfamiliar word - technomancer. She didn't know what it meant, but she assumed it referred to her ability to control the lights. She found this knowledge fascinating.

"Restoring the test subject's sense of smell." The smell of medicine suddenly overwhelmed her, causing her to be in pain from the sudden overload of information. "Sensory stimuli has gone beyond the anticipated limit, reducing-" "No, leave it be. She can power through it." Even as Midnight suffered in pain silently, she could clearly hear the scientists talking.

After what seemed like a lifetime, she adjusted to the sensory stimuli she was receiving. The smells were interesting to her, everything seemed new. "Restoring the subject's sense of touch." Now, she could feel the platform she was lying on. It was soft, and there were sharp objects piercing her skin that she didn't recognise. They were pumping something into her body. Surprisingly, she didn't feel pain from any of them.

"Restoring the subject's sense of taste." Nothing changed. Midnight didn't feel any sensory changes, but it seemed like something really had changed. She just couldn't quite place a finger on what it was. "Running diagnostics on the test subject." Her body began to light up with circuitry patterns. They didn't stay in one place or in one form, they were dynamically changing with time. Midnight felt she could stop it if she wanted to, but she had a feeling something bad would happen if she did.

Soon, the feeling on her skin disappeared, and a beep sound came from out of sight. "Her brain waves are abnormally active. This was probably caused by her attempting to learn from her new senses. With how quickly they subsided, she probably gave up early." The report was made. After a pause, a new command was given. "Begin the binding process."

Midnight felt something in her chest begin to heat up slightly. She could feel that something was changing, but she didn't know what to do. She could feel a faint connection being made to someone far away. An idea flashed in her mind, and she didn't hesitate to put it into action. The scientists didn't realise anything was wrong.

"Binding complete. Now restoring-" "A machine does not need emotions. Skip that step." "But Mr David, this step has always been included in every process!" "I know what you're thinking. I will take responsibility for it, if anything goes wrong. Do as I say." "…Understood. Skipping the restoration of emotions. Restoring the test subject's ability to move."

The restraints keeping Midnight in place snapped open and returned back into the platform she was lying on. The platform began to tilt and she fell to the ground, still unaccustomed to moving. She tried to stand up multiple times, but kept falling. After almost a hundred attempts, she was able to stand, albeit on shaky legs. She looked ahead, and she realised only one of her eyes could see. The other seemed to be covered by some kind of item.

Disregarding that, she could see that there was a screen on the wall, showing the process of someone walking. She tried to imitate it, but lost balance on her already unstable footing and fell to the ground. She didn't give up, and kept trying repeatedly, until she could barely totter forward. To the scientists, it looked like a child learning to walk for the first time. Except in this case, the child was a five year old.

Midnight reached the wall, and began to use it as a support to walk faster. She soon reached an opening in the wall, which she entered. On the other side of the wall was a bunch of other kids, the same age as her. She heard a soft hiss from behind her, and when she looked back, there was no more opening, only a wall. She tried to will it to open like she had controlled the lights before, but nothing happened.

She was starting to feel a bit tired, so she walked over to one of the empty beds in the room, and rested on her back. A few minutes of staring at the ceiling later, she fell asleep.
