Chapter 29: Cabin

The truck comes to a halt, its headlights illuminating a quaint, cabin nestled amongst the towering trees. My fingers tap repeatedly on my lap, with a slight concern building up in my mind, despite Anita comforting me. Staring at the windows casting warm light onto the porch, it was complete with steps leading upto it. It had two chairs out in the front with a metal grill table separating them.

Anita opens the car door with a flourish, the crisp cold air nipping at her skin.

"Come on, Adrian," a soft voice catches my attention. I look over to find an extending hand. "This is gonna be our home for the weekend", she comforts me with a grin on her face, and her brown hair slightly swayed from the wind.

Staring at her hand, I shake my head to get rid of my thoughts and finally get out, with a little bit of sand kicking up as I step down from the truck.

Coiling around my waist and leaning her head on my shoulder, Anita and I have a quiet moment adoring the spectacle. The silence of the woods surrounds us, disturbed only by the chirping of crickets and the occasional sound of birds.

A shiver runs down my spine, not entirely from the cool air.

-

Stepping into the cabin, the smell of wood smoke and dew hits my nose. The inside of the cabin was a modern interior, quite a contrast to the rugged exterior. A calming crackling fireplace is situated in the left side of the home with a chimney rising up above the roof. The exposed brickwalls and fur covered rugs on the floor feel therapeutic on my feet as I leave Anita behind at the door and take it all in.

A glass table for two sits in the middle, with various doorways leading to different rooms. An elegant bottle of wine paired with glasses and an ashtray however, reveals Anita's plans for tonight.

"W...Wow," I breathe out.

"This is..."

"More than you expected, hm?", Anita calls out.

I find her with a triumphant smile with her arms folded neatly around her torso.

"I told you I had something special planned out."

She walks further into the living room, plopping herself down on a cozy couch and resting her elbow on the armrest.

Putting down my bag temporarily, I wander around the house, touching and adoring everything with care like a child amazed by a car toy.

Picking up a photo frame above the mantel piece, I wipe a layer of dust with the touch of my fingers clearing up an image of a man I didn't recognize. He looked no older than 60 and was smiling brightly with a full head of white hair, complete with wrinkles that sat beside his eyes.

"Who's this?", I ask while turning to Anita.

A pang of sadness flickers across her eyes as she starts to twidde her fingers together and avoiding eye contact.

"My Dad. We used to come here and spend summer holidays. We made a lot of memories here with Mom, him and I. A happy little family of three people.", Anita confides with a sad tone as she watches the fireplace flicker and the heat reaching out to her face.

"Well,", I put down the photo frame back, "Maybe we can make some new memories", I offer with a wide grin.

Anita's eyes light up and she pulls me close, hugging me, with the soothing warmth of the fireplace radiating around us. I know this place holds a special place in her heart so at least she wouldn't do anything violent. That clears up a lot of my worries, actually.

Rubbing circles on my back, she whispers into my chest,

"That's all I wanted to hear, honeybee."

-

After a hearty dinner cooked by me with Anita helping me out with here and there, we both feel each other's body warmth, finding solace in our bodies touching each other in front of the fireplace.

"So,", I break the ice while I bring a glass of wine to my mouth,"spill the beans, Anita. I'm sure we didn't just come out miles away from everyone just to have a quiet dinner. What's cooking up inside that head of yours, hm?"

Raising an eyebrow, Anita replies with a playful tone.

"Getting impatient, are we?", Anita feels up my healed torso, probably glad I don't have to use bandages now. "You'll just have to wait and see."

Leaning in, with her intoxicating breath, she whispers with a husky voice,

"I assure you, it won't involve anything against your will or something thar would incriminate me.", with her giggling a bit at the last part.

An involuntary smile spread across my face. Maybe this 'honeymoon' getaway wasn't so bad, after all.

Anita nuzzles her face into my neck before tightening her grip and shuffling against me, finding a right spot before she falls silent. Her breath starts to fall into a rhythm with a slight whistle escaping her nose. Seeing her sweet and gentle side of her, I run my hands through her hair before planting a gentle kiss on her head.
