Arc 2: Kingdom Goddess - Chapter 67

Far to the north of the kingdom another quite abnormal day was occurring in the city of Vindenne. It was the city of the lordship and the hub for all sorts of matters concerning goddesses as of late. No one knew just what kind of crazy things would happen on any given day. Rumors had been going around that the goddess of the kingdom was planning to begin construction of something called a public school in the city. As it turned out today marked the beginning of construction for this school.

The construction zone was near the edge of the business district of the city and was a recently vacant lot where some rarely used warehouses had been. It could have been easy to convert the warehouses into the school it didn't seem like the correct thing to do. Thus it had been me personally who had demolished them, something easily done when you're a titanic goddess.

After the mess had been cleared away the useful materials had been recycled for use elsewhere on on this project. The entire lot was then left a blank slate of dirt which was flattened out and packed down to prevent structural issues later. Then a foundation of stone was laid and the materials brought in to be arranged. It was like a giant puzzle in three dimensions and was actually fun for me to figure out. We had instructions after all thanks to the blueprint me and some architects had done.

Access to water had also been something I had wanted for the school and a small well had been dug by yours truly. Pipes and a simple hand pump had also been installed with the help of some of the humans as I wanted them to learn. There was also an area fenced off for a small garden and chicken coup enclosure so the children could learn about farming and other useful skills like cooking.

As for the construction crew itself it was made of people from all over the city from the general labor pool. The men and few women were really from all walks of life, including a few previous criminals as well. There was one architect on site as well to help make sure the plans were followed and I served as the foreman overseeing everything. At least when my duties as goddess allowed it. Obviously I couldn't be here twenty-four seven.

While the sky today was clear of clouds it was still quite gray with cold winds blowing down from the nearby mountains. Such weather didn't bother me one bit of course. I'm a goddess. It did however bother the humans I had working with me at the construction site and I had to be understanding of their need to adjust their work accordingly.

Being the one in charge of the worksite it was my job to make sure the workers were all taken care of and safe at any given time. This was something I also actually had some fun doing. There was safety regulations to observe, a small outdoor kitchen to provide simple food for those that couldn't bring their own, and a small first aid station as well. I even made a fire pit for the workers so they could warm themselves them up on these almost winter days. Oh and there were also these things setup to serve as temporary bathrooms as well. I wont go into too much detail on those just that they're there.

I easily could have gotten away without paying the workers since I'm literally their goddess. But that wouldn't be the correct thing to do so of course I paid them. The only real income to speak of I had were the donations to the small churches around the kingdom and it was that money I used for this school alongside the donations from the other sources I had received. This money paid for the wages, food, materials, and any other expenses that came up.

At the moment I was standing in the middle of the construction zone with my normal outfit on. I was however wearing a yellow hard hat and had a clipboard attached to my waist. In my hands was a large piece of waterproofed paper that had the general blueprint laid out on it which I was using to help direct everyone.

Standing beside me was my demi-foreman: a man named Derrick Selamen. He was the architect I had on site and served as the actual foreman whenever I wasn't around. Not that he was special looking at all. He was just a man in his forties with short red-brown hair, green eyes, a small beard, and pale skin. Just from the time I'd spent with him I could tell he was generally easygoing but was very detailed oriented. Apparently he was quite famous around here and was well known for being excellent as his job.

Derrick looked over top of my head down at the plans I was holding and then back up at the project. So far he seemed satisfied with the progress. The foundations had been laid and the frame had been set up, thus marking the real beginnings of the building.

Some man carrying a random piece of lumber was stumbling by and Derrick called out to him.

“Hey you! Where's your hat?”

The man stopped walking and looked up at the foreman with a disgruntled expression.

“Those damn hats are stupid! I look like a damn fool wearing it!”

I lowered the paper from in front of my face and looked at the man. I then cleared my throat.

Suddenly the man because very frightened and almost dropped the wood he was carrying. He became very agreeable and nodded to us both.

“O-Oh! Of course I'll wear the hat!” He stammered. “Let me just g-go get it!”

As the man scurried away Derrick sighed and readjusted his own yellow hard hat on his head.

“Honestly.” He said. “If the rest of us have to look this silly he has to as well.”

This made me sigh and roll my eyes. These hard hats had been made by me using scrap metal. It was pretty important to be safe on a work site and I had explained this to everyone when they started. Adapting to new things was difficult for humans sometimes though and I understood.

I lowered my arms and the blueprint to my waist and looked back and up at Derrick.

“You know I'm making everyone wear these for a reason.”

Derrick jumped in surprise himself, seeming to have forgotten about me when he made his comment. He stood up straight and looked ahead.

“S-Sorry goddess!” He apologized quickly.

I shrugged and lifted the blueprint again to look at.

“I get it human.” I replied calmly. “Change is hard. But these hard hats are for everyone's protection like I previously explained.”

Derrick was about to reply when he was cut off by some disturbance at the edge of the construction site. The two of us turned around to see what the issue was.

Standing there at the main gateway into the site was a rather tall and strong looking man who had to be at least twenty-eight years old. He was wearing a suit of full plate armor with a half helm that revealed his features. His hair was long, past his shoulders, and a golden color. There was a short beard on his face, his eyes were turquoise, and his skin was a pleasant creme.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

This man was currently arguing with one of the laborers about something. It was clear he was looking for someone and upon listening closer he wasn't being very polite at all. Since he wasn't a worshiper of mine either I couldn't tell much about him without touching his skin.

I scoffed and started rolling up the blueprint.

“He must be a champion of some kind.”

Derrick looked down at me in confusion.

“Why? How can you tell?”

“He hasn't got filth all over him.” I replied.

The nature of his presence here was revealed when he once again made his demand to be escorted to the person he was looking for. It turned out he was looking for the goddess of this kingdom, or the one who claimed to be as he put it. The poor worker he had accosted was quick to point in my direction of course and then made themselves scarce as this knight stomped my way.

Derrick and I stood there watching the man approach as the rest of the workforce quickly put distance between themselves and the general area I was standing in. Not something I necessarily blame them for of course. The mood of the worksite had sort of quieted down into a grim silence as most people stopped working and started pretending to work while actually watching what was about to unfold.

The arrogant seeming knight walked up to Derrick while barely giving me a quick glance.

“You there!” He said loudly. “You seem to at least have a brain. Help me out here!”

I held the rolled up blueprint in my left fist and put it on my hip as it cocked to the side. This guy sure thought of himself as hot stuff. I kept quiet for the moment however.

Derrick was looking quite nervous and kept looking down at me and then back at the man.

“And what is it you're in need of help with sir?” Derrick replied. “I can't say I know you.”

The man stood up straight and put his hands on his hips in some sort of pose before answering.

“I suppose you cultists wouldn't know someone of my standing.” He said haughtily. “My name is Sir Garen Rubicen. I'm one of the most famous of knights in the kingdom of Pheoa. A hero!” He paused for a moment before continuing. “I've come to see if these rumors about someone pretending to be a goddess were true.”

At this point I decided to interject myself. Still holding my fist on my hip I looked straight up at this so called hero and frowned in disappointment.

“The rumors are true. Though no one's pretending.”

Finally Garen looked down at me directly. He grinned and shook his head dismissively.

“Aye! That fool over there pointed at this little girl.” He said with a slight sneer. “Not that I believe it for a minute. That a tiny girl like you would be able to fool the masses is almost as unbelievable as the goddesses returning.”

Derrick had began to back away from the situation now himself, his nerves clearly too much for him to handle now. He was sweating and very red in the face in embarrassment.

With my right hand I reached out and grabbed Derrick to keep him from escaping. I then let go and reached up to my head, removing my hard hat and revealing my brilliantly sparkling galaxy hairpin. Once that was done I handed both it and the blueprint to him as I sized up this knight. With no further actions from me to keep him Derrick then slinked away and I let him.

“So hot shot.” I started. “Think yourself the hero eh? Here to stop the evildoer goddess?”

By now everyone else including Derrick had retreated to a safe distance away from the two of us. The knight seemed to think this was to leave me alone with him out of fear of him as he was heavily armed with sword and bow. This of course was no in fact the reason.

Garen chuckled in a somewhat cruel way as he looked down at me, looming above as he stood over six feet tall.

“Looks like you're all alone little girl. You're a despicable thing.”

My eyes began to glow brightly as I quickly grew to my goddess size, my body now looming above him as well as the entire city around me. Soon the construction site was covered in my dark shadow with my two massive feet planted on each side of the open plot. I leaned over with my wrists pressed onto my hips. A somewhat unkind sneer on my lips.

“And who are you little man?” I said mockingly. “A little bug scampering about?”

The sudden alteration of the power dynamic was certainly overwhelming for the arrogant ass and Garen was left standing there stunned as he looked up at me in the sky over him. His flight or flight had locked up and he couldn't even react in the midst of the pure terror he was experiencing. He couldn't even move when my gigantic left hand lowered down towards him.

I wasn't going to hurt him of course but I wanted to give him a real firm idea who had the power here. So with a gentle but firm flick I used my index finger to send the tiny knight tumbling backwards over the dirt ground. I smiled as he rolled into a pathetic heap. He wouldn't have any injuries besides bruises.

Once my point had been made I reduced myself back down to my human size and moved my arms behind my back. I then looked over to the workers who were standing there gawking fearfully themselves.

“Two of you bring him over to me.” I ordered.

At my command two of the obviously brave laborers hurriedly rushed over to where Garen was on the ground and helped lift him up to his feet. The man was still shaky and unstable so the pair had to somewhat drag him over to where I was waiting. A goddess shouldn't have to walk over there after all, she should have people brought to her.

After the two men had delivered Garen they released him, but the poor knight was still unable to stand and collapsed to his hands and knees in front of me. He was still recovering from both the shock of seeing me at full size and the tumble my finger had given him. Thus he was unable to do much but kneel there and pant as his fear still gripped him. He smelled stinky too as he had shat himself.

I had moved my hands back to my hips as I stood over the groveling man. He wasn't acting so high and mighty now that a true mighty one had put him in his place. His attitude is what brought him to this and I had no regrets.

“I wouldn't have to be such a meanie if ya'll knight types weren't such shitty human beings.” I said sighing softly. “Did you find what you were looking for?”

Garen was still a bit too shaken up for coherent sentences and just stammered simple things at me.

“I-I don't b-believe...” He choked out. “A g-goddess! R-Real goddess!”

With a small sigh of disappointment I stepped back from the man and lifted my left hand into the air, waving it around slightly.

“Someone get rid of him for now.” I commanded. “Take him to Quarely to deal with. Help him make himself presentable first. He's had a bit of an accident.”

Two different men walked up this time and bowed to me in silence. Their faces did turn up in disgust as they smelled the mess the man had made of his britches out of fear. They however obeyed me regardless and helped lift the so called hero to his feet and stumble away.

With the interloper taken care of I turned back to Derrick and waved him over, collecting my hat and blueprint from him once again.

“Honestly.” I said flipping my hair before putting the hat on. “These assholes really need to leave me alone. Why do they always seek me out?”

Derrick gulped nervously but tried to answer my question as honestly as possible.

“Well erm... Because you're the goddess Goddess.”

I grunted but couldn't dispute it. With another sigh, this one deeper, I adjusted myself and turned back to the project at hand.

“Honestly I should probably be a bit nicer to these asshats from other kingdoms.” I said more to myself than anyone. “But what am I supposed to do when they come at me like that? I have to assert my dominance! They're lucky I'm not default posing on their asses!”

Derrick seemed to have relaxed a fair bit now that the confrontation was true and fully over. It was also quite obvious I wasn't upset at him which eased his fears greatly as well. He did seemed confused though.

“Default posing goddess?” He asked.

I lifted and stuck out both my arms straight to my sides while I stood still for a few seconds.

“Like this.” I replied.

Then I dropped my arms again and started walking over to the frame of the structure. Derrick followed after me like an obedient dog.

“I'm afraid I still don't understand goddess.” He said. “I apologize.”

I just shrugged again.

“It's fine. Lets just get back to the task at hand.”

He nodded. “Yes goddess.”

Now that the last major distraction was out of the way we could finally get back to work on the school. Of course there would be other distractions and problems as the project went on but I was determined to meet them with confidence and problem solving. It would only take a couple months for the school to be completed and by then the teachers would be ready to give it a go with actual students.

There was honestly so much still to do before it was completely ready to go even after construction was finished and I hoped to be able to pull it off between my goddess duties. In the back of my mind I realized that this champion from another kingdom would have to be dealt with too and I hoped Quarely would be able to have my back on that. Sometimes I felt bad relying on him so much but even a goddess can't do literally everything herself.
