Deep within the confines of my goddess domain that industrial age house stood as the most peculiar sight. All around the surroundings were of a medieval castle at massive scale that was lit by torches and odd ambient light. However here in the middle of the otherwise normal looking royal bedroom was an odd building that was nothing like this world had ever seen. Inside it were strange marvels that were nothing short of magic, but instead of mana twisted the elements with the use of electricity. It was its own self contained miracle that stood apart from the larger insanity of a goddess size home around it.
It was here that I had initially imprisoned my supernatural prisoners, though they had now been given free reign of the castle with limited forays into the outside world. Unsurprisingly the lich with his vast knowledge was quick to understand most of the technology this suburban house exposed him to. I wasn't sure if this should worry me but that was a worry for another time. Right now there was something much more pressing for me to be concerned about. My end of year party!
Now that I was a goddess presiding over an entire kingdom there had been too much indecision in where I would have this celebration. With worshipers all over the kingdom it was too difficult to choose in which city or town to have the party. Not everyone actually worshiped me and even a large portion of those that did were doing so more out of obligation than true devotion. Thus coming to one location would be seen as favoritism and be problematic.
The capital city Norlov seemed like a good option as it was the center of the kingdom's government. That however would mean the involvement of the royal family which wasn't something I wanted to deal with. Also it would only further isolate the general population from the privileged city and associate me with that. Doovlin was where I had the first party of course, but having it there again would surely be seen as pure favoritism. Of course the village was extremely special to me, but if I gave it too much attention it would be bad.
Nowhere else in the kingdom really stood out as more important as these two places and so instead I made the party a more private one in my own home. The celebration itself of the new year was already an established tradition around the kingdom of course, though their holiday was more in line with the semi-mystical beliefs one might find in an old druid sect. Goddesses had been an active force at one point in this world and it was impossible to completely remove beliefs tied to deities.
Traditionally in this kingdom they believed that with the new year the world got closer to its ultimate destruction. It was only through the observance of the turning of the calendar into new beginnings that their faith could give enough spiritual power to the upcoming year to give it the strength to resist the pull of doom. Not too strange of a belief considering their odd fusion of atheism and acceptance that gods were real.
Technically their doom sayings were on to something as planets were pulled ever so slightly closer to their stars even with stable orbits through various methods. That however would take literally an astronomical amount of time and wasn't even guaranteed before the star simply expanded to such a size the planet was wiped clear of life. Maybe some type of astrologist or goddess from the distant past realized this inevitable fate and it got passed on as a tradition.
My additions were simply not comparable as new years to the culture I came from was a simple observation of the planet's trip around the sun and general well wishes for the unknown future. There were fun fireworks to be sure but they didn't have any spiritual significance. I was planning to put on a little show in Doovlin after my party just because.
Right now however I was running about my little house in my massive bedroom to finish the final preparations for the party. There were decorations like streamers and balloons all about the main living room and kitchen combo which I had put up myself the day before. I had also prepared lots of snacks like trail mix, small cakes, shish kabobs, fruits and veggies, and even potato chips. For drinks there were such things as wine, ale, and champagne. Many of these things would be entirely new to my visitors.
Entertainment was another important thing for parties such as these and that was where I had to get a bit more creative. Replicating music in the form of media was difficult as my replications were based on my memory. Even with my ability to create compact discs or cassette tapes was of little use to me as perfectly remembering a song was extremely difficult. I did however create several instruments and thought of a way to cheat the system. By magically animating real instruments they could play songs close enough to trick me into thinking it was acceptable, not that my guests could tell at all.
In addition to the prospect of music I also had created a few board games that I remembered from my previous world. Also several decks of cards as that was something even the people here had, though the games I might introduce would be new. Such games as pairs or old maid were easy enough that anyone could understand regardless of what world they came from.
This was the extent of my plans for the evening and night and the social anxiety was already creeping its way into my mind. Would everyone I invited like what I had set up for them? Sub-chan was unfortunately no help in this matter as the feeling of dread was coming from her directly. As one would normally expect it was the task of the conscious mind to calm the irrational fears experienced by the subconscious. This would be a back and forth until my guests arrived and proved one of us right over the other.
At the moment the other others here with me were Barthenor and Neske as they pretty much lived here still. Neither of them were very overwhelmed or confused with the things I got up to anymore as they had mostly gotten used to whatever crazy thing I pulled out of my back pocket at this point. They were curious about the foods I had created for sure but being undead they couldn't partake. Thus they were mostly just waiting around for the other guests to arrive. Both were sitting on the big couch in the middle of the living room.
I came out into the main room and put a plate with some cheese slices and crackers on it down in the middle of the short table. Neske was lounging on the couch in a manner that kept her from being too close to Barthenor but also not very far away from him.
Neske sniffed her nose in a dismissive manner as she watched me.
“A goddess going to such lengths for mortals. All for the celebration of the new year. It's unseemly.”
Barthenor spoke in his hallow voice, this time without his jawbone moving.
“The turning over of the new year is an important event.” He said without looking away from the wall. “Lest our world slide into the sun.”
I let out a small sigh as I stood back up, my hands on my hips.
“You know stable orbits aren't broken that easily.” I replied glancing over at him. “I mean I don't know exactly how this planet works but I really doubt its going to fall into its star just because people didn't believe enough.” I shrugged my shoulders. “Then again who knows!”
Both of my undead companions looked at me, the vampire with a slightly concerned expression.
“Shouldn't you of all beings know?” Neske asked with a worried edge to her tone.
Barthenor seemed to ignore that comment and spoke to me.
“Yes you've mentioned in passing your knowledge of the movements of the heavenly bodies. We shall have to indulge in a more lengthy discussion sometime in the near future.”
I nodded and dropped my arms to my sides.
“Yeah I guess.”
My train of thought was interrupted as the first of the guests arrived. Or that is to say the first of the guests notified me they wanted to arrive. There still wasn't a permanent portal into my domain as it felt too much of a security risk. Instead I had notified everyone invited to this party to pray to me at specific locations so I could open a portal and let them into my realm. The first group having just done so.
I clapped my hands together and smiled with bone excitement and nerves, Sub-chan still fretting over unforeseen rejection.
“Ah! That's the first group now!” I exclaimed.
Using the map inside my head I was able to pull up the location of this first group. It was the people from Doovlin I had invited that included Miya's family and the innkeepers. With but a thought I opened a portal from their location to just outside the door of this mini home within a home. For sentimental reasons I had also instructed everyone to knock on the door to be let in as if this was a real house in a real neighborhood. Pretty much everyone was ok with indulging me in this and it did make it more fun for them too besides.
With my goddess eyes I saw the six humans step through the portal and once they were through it closed behind them. Miya was the one to step forward and knock on the red painted door and I quickly jumped over to it. When I opened the door there they all were standing on the front porch still dressed in their winter clothing.
I smiled and swung the door open wide, stepping to the side to allow them to enter.
“Come in come in!” I said happily with a big smile on my face. “Take your coats off and relax!” I then shot a glance over at the two undead on the couch. “Don't mind them. Not all ya'll have met before but that's Neske and Barthenor.”
With my invitation the six people filed into the house one after another. First was the Deuiden family: Miya, Tromly, Elentra, and Duncan. They were all quite used to being around me and were very exicted to be back in this wondrous house I had made as they had only been here once or twice before. They all hung up their coats on one of the several coat racks I had setup and filed into the main room.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Tromly was quite excited to be back and the boy gasped in shock seeing the two sitting on the couch. He was quite unafraid either due to his childlike innocence or because I was standing in the room with him. With almost bounding excitement he went up in front of Barthenor and bowed to the lich.
“It's nice to meet you!” He exclaimed. “Wow you really are made from just bones!”
His mother Elentra walked over to him and put her hand over his shoulder to pull him closer to herself and away from the lich. It was understandable and despite her obvious nervousness she was trying to be polite.
“I-I'm sorry about my son.”
I called over from the door in a cheery tone.
“Oh don't worry about it! He's used to humans being around at this point.”
Whither not that was true was still up for debate. Regardless its not like either of these undead were going to actually harm anyone here. Even if they wanted to they wouldn't dare with me present. Everyone that visited today would be totally safe.
After came the Juniper couple Jackson and Illena. Though they were on in years they were still quite energetic now that they were seeing a goddess's domain in person. Their own children were currently at another family's house for the holiday which gave them the chance to leave the inn and come here to my party. Both of them were clearly quite shocked to see both both my room outside and this interior. Each of them bowed to me before hanging up their coats.
Jackson whistled as he took in the various decorations and food laid about.
“To think I would live to see a house inside a house!” He exclaimed. “And I see our goddess has not held back when it comes to all manner of interesting refreshments.”
His wife Illena had her short blue hair tied up behind her head and was staying close to her husband. She was clearly overwhelmed by it all and the sight of a skeleton and pale corpse on the couch was frightening. Thankfully her fear was tempered by both my presence and her husband's embrace as he kept one arm around her.
“Thank you for inviting us to your home.” She said with a quick bow of her own. “It... It truly is a marvelous place.”
I rubbed my left hand on my right arm with an embarrassed grin on my face.
“No problem really!”
In order to distract everyone from my embarrassment I quickly jumped over to the table in front of the couch in front of the bookshelves and defunct TV. I then began to introduce everyone to each other.
“Well anyway this is Barthenor and Neske.” I said gesturing to the couch. Then I motioned to each of the humans in turn. “And this is Miya and her family. Duncan, Elentra, and Tromly. Then this is Jackson and Illena Juniper.” My arms dropped to my sides. “Why don't ya'll get to know each other while we wait for the others?”
There were a variety of couches and chairs around the rather large living room with a pair of large tables between them. This was a goddess's house and thus it was thirty by fifty feet just for this room alone. That was not including the dining and kitchen space was added another forty square feet. This space had its own large dining table with chairs and a counter with stools to boot. Plenty of places to sit.
While everyone started greeting each other it was clear from Neske's expression and body language that she was not happy to be here at all where her master was indifferent as he always was. The vampiress sat up on the couch and prepared to stand up.
“I've had enough of this.” She said with a huff. “This is stupid.”
Her reaction of course caused a bit of an awkward pause. Miya however was much more confident and sharp tongued as of late and it was she who stepped over to sit across from the vampire on a chair. She put her arms on the rests on either side and smiled almost too friendly.
“Are we not good enough for you to mingle with due to being lowly humans?” She asked with a bit of snark. “I know a goddess who would label that as stinky behavior.”
Everyone else in the room was still a bit too unsure of the social situation with two clear monsters present so they all remained quite silent as the Junipers came over to find places to sit themselves. Barthenor was also remaining quiet likely to gauge the reactions of all involved.
Neske sneered and sat back down on the couch in a clearly angry manner. She then replied to Miya with her fangs showing.
“Its humans that remain covered in stink. Just because I'm more like to associate with some of you lot doesn't mean I find your kind at all bearable as a whole.”
Miya just remained smiling back at her opponent in this social combat. She was wholly unperturbed it seemed.
“That's fine Miss Neske.” She replied in a kind tone. “I'm sure you shall have plenty of time to get to know us tonight. I hope we can become fast friends.”
The sparks were almost visible flying between the two of them. Even I was getting put completely out of my comfort zone with this and wanted to just run away before I ended up bringing down my goddess foot and ruining the mood. Instead I found a way to dismiss myself as the next group was arriving.
I clapped my hands together and smiled shyly.
“Why doesn't everyone find a nice place to sit and get something to eat? Elentra would you help people get drinks while I go let the next guests in?”
Much to my relief Elentra was willing to help me out and led her son over to a chair near Miya.
“Of course goddess.” She said with a smile towards me. Then she looked down to her son. “Sweetheart you just sit here with your sister alright?”
Tromly sat down and looked up to his mother with a somewhat deflated look. He had probably been excited to see a fight between the two.
“Yes mother...” He said sadly.
The Juniper pair went about finding a place to sit as Elentra went to the kitchen area to where there were already many clear wineglasses set out. Her husband followed after her.
“Here I'll come help you.” Duncan said.
Elentra turned to him and smiled warmly.
“Thank you dear!”
With the drinks soon to be taken care of I took the opportunity to slip over to the door again where another rapping knock beckoned me. This next group that had come through the portal had been from Norlov and consisted of Timothy, his father, the fairy, Maisy, and the crown prince. The last one had surprised my priest and priestess but he had been invited because I actually kinda liked that member of the royal family. It sorta confused me too but I figured why the heck not?
I opened the door and smiled warmly to everyone standing there. This too was the first time that anyone of them had been inside my domain save Timothy and they all looked a bit frightened. Once they saw me however they seemed to be more at ease.
Timothy was smiling and blushing from embarrassment. He bowed awkwardly.
“H-Hello goddess.”
The rest of them also bowed with Timothy's father Zachery particularly shaken. He was unable to take his eyes away from the vast bedroom around him and barely registered the room inside the doorway.
“This i-is quite the home you have g-goddess.” He stammered.
Salferia appeared from behind Timothy's head and giggled in delight at seeing all these humans so shaken up. She looked around herself and then down at me as she hovered in the air.
“I honestly can't believe you let us all in here.” She chimed. “Isn't a goddess's domain extremely private? Isn't this like us going inside of you?”
I ignored the teasing smile on the fairy's face and instead blew a puff of wind that sent her spinning. She yelped and then put on quite the pout.
“Hey! Not kind!” The fairy spat.
I just grinned back up at her and turned to address the humans.
“Welcome everyone!” I said. “Especially you two.” I nodded to Zachery and Turshok. “You've not spent much time with me in general so being here must be especially scary. Don't worry I wont bite!”
Turshok was visibly nervous and gulped before speaking. He gave me an elegant bow.
“I am quite surprised to be invited to your home my goddess.” He said trying to keep his princely composure. “Though I thank you for the trust you put in me.”
Maisy was keeping quite close to Timothy and smiled down at me.
“It's always a pleasure to spend time with you Goddess Jenna.”
I returned the smile and stepped outside the open door onto the porch to join them. Then I motioned with my right arm into the house.
“Pleasure's all mine Maisy.” I replied. “Why don't ya'll head inside and introduce yourselves to everyone else in there? Keep something to eat or drink? The last group is going to be here soon.”
Timothy nodded and took the lead.
“Yes goddess! Thanks again!”
He then blushed red as Maisy took his hand and walked with him through the door. Salferia followed after them in the air but not before shaking her butt at me in an insulting manner. I ignored her and gave a nod and a smile to the still nervous prince as he bowed to me again before heading inside himself. Zachery also followed in after the prince, his eyes still somewhat glazed over from being around both me and a member of the royal family. Hopefully he would recover soon. With his son around probably.
The last group was already arriving however through the final portal of the night. It was super handy being a goddess as they would all be able to be sent back to their places of origin in the same instant manner. These people were from Vinedenne and were the Mettlelin family and my favorite mage Ferherlyn. As they walked up to me on the porch they too marveled at the vast size of my goddess sized room.
Quarely was here with his wife Belieal and his son Jeris. They were all dressed in fine clothing as expected and Quarely had actually been here before as had his head mage. All of them bowed to me in respect.
Quarely smiled upon standing up.
“Even though I've been here before I can't help but be overcome with wonder seeing all this. It often slips the mind just how immense you are in truth Goddess Jenna. Being inside your home puts that back into perspective.”
I was about to reply to him while having a somewhat unavoidable grin on my face when Ferherlyn spoke instead.
“I can sense another mage here.” The old man replied while rubbing his beard with his right hand. “Through the door I can see a particularly thin fellow on that couch. That demon mage I presume?”
Belieal let out a small gasp and put her hand over her mouth, a look of fear on her face.
“That ghastly monster is here?” She asked in shock. “I thought you had captured it goddess!”
This made the smile fade from my face as something serious was brought up. I let out a quick sigh and then shrugged my shoulders while shaking my head.
“Just call him Barthenor.” I replied. “He's past his days as a scary master of life and death. I'm asking you to just treat him like you would any other mage of high standing. He's not gunna hurt you alright?”
This reassurance from me seemed to calm them all down for the most part, though the eldest son Jeris was being quite valorous. Though he was not wearing any armor or carrying a weapon he still stepped forward and pounded his right hand over his chest in a salute to me.
“Tis no problem for me goddess!” He said proudly.
Quarely held his wife close to him and gave me a serious look.
“I have placed my trust in you explicitly goddess.” He said solemnly. “I shall continue to do so even in this.”
I gave him a nod and the friendly smile returned to my face.
“Don't worry about it silly head! You and your family are perfectly safe with me.” I used my thumb to point to my chest. Then I turned to the old mage. “You probably have lots in common with Barthenor yourself. Maybe you can strike up old man magic conversation?”
Ferherlyn couldn't help but grin slightly as he looked down at me.
“You always have a way with words Goddess Jenna.” He then sighed and shrugged, seemingly surrendering to my endless surprises. “I shall do my best for your sake if nothing else. I've always wondered what I might say if I met the mythical mage, as have many of my order. To think I would be given the chance.”
With the matter settled I turned around and looked over my shoulder at the small group as I began walking inside.
“Come on in then! I'll leave the inter introductions to you guys.” I sighed. “Honestly I'm already getting a bit tired.”
Quarely smiled softly at me as he and the others began following after me.
“Please don't tire yourself out for our sake goddess.”
I just waved my left hand in the air dismissively.
“Don't worry I'll be fine.”
As I said that I led them all inside. Once they were all through the door I closed it behind us. This family like most of the other guests I had invited were all well aware of my lack of social battery so to speak and they would be understanding towards me. My social awkwardness would not keep me from being a good host so I shall push through these feelings with all my might! If the personified subconscious inside my head had taught me nothing else she had shown my just how strong my will was. I had invited them all here for a party however and a party we shall have!
