III.

David was finally alive, not necessarily in the sense of being reborn as a living creature, but now he had finally started to feel things he hadn't felt for a long time, sensations he didn't even remember existed, yet he knew that in the past, they were so insignificant and ignored in his daily life.

In fact, this was a bit more than he could handle, and all those microcalculations that his consciousness was making just by existing were not something David was accustomed to in the last century. So, even though he was already on his feet, he simply fell due to sheer discomfort.

The light he saw was unbearable, and everything he felt seemed like millions of needles piercing his entire body. It was something very strange that he didn't expect to happen. But finally, after a long time writhing on the ground, he began to get used to it all, and was finally able to start thinking again.

Mentally, David was smiling, smiling a lot.

"That was very intense, heavens, feeling things, what a wonder."

"Okay! I don't know what I am, or where I am, or what I can do, I just know I have a system, and now I must be some kind of undead, maybe a vampire?..."

Looking at himself, David finally realized he was holding some kind of sword, and the shape of his body disappointed him a little, actually, it disappointed him a lot.

"Ah..."

"I'm a skeleton... Now that's disappointing."

Even though David knew that because of this, he probably wouldn't be able to do most of the things he had hoped for, he was more excited than sad. Quickly after that, he began to try to figure out his surroundings, and from everything he saw, and had seen so far, it was simply walls, ceilings, and floors that seemed to go on indefinitely in front of him and behind him. He quickly assumed he was in some kind of Dungeon, the basics for any monster story, as he had thought and read in his youth.

It was strange for him to remember these things now that he was basically a centenarian being, but at least that space didn't degenerate his memories or his mind; they had simply been slowly set aside, but now they seemed to be coming back quickly because he, even though he probably didn't have a brain, was now in an actual place, and not in that white hell.

Quickly remembering what he had asked the god for, he finally, even more excited, said, "Status."

He found this a bit embarrassing, as if it were some childish dream, but it didn't matter, and he didn't care. There was no one there to judge him.

Almost instantly, a real RPG-style screen appeared in front of him. It wasn't just random data that, for some reason, David understood, but a true RPG screen, which he liked a lot. He just wasn't very sure about his stats and some of those areas.

"It seems to be rather simple. I really am a skeleton; that's a bit disappointing, but what can you do? Maybe that Roman numeral in front indicates that I can evolve the species?"

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

"Perhaps there are no classes, and it's just a constant evolution of my own species? Well, seeing that there's no section like 'class,' 'job,' or anything of the sort, that's probably it."

"What really bothers me are these strange attributes. It seems like Vitality isn't a bar but an attribute, and not only that, there doesn't seem to be a stamina attribute, which probably should relate to Vitality. Also, the magical energy of this world is called mana."

David knew a little about this term. He knew that mana was one of the aspects of the mind for Hindus or something like that, but he couldn't believe that the most generic name for magical energy was mana. Well, at least it wasn't "magic" or something like that.

"My attributes make sense. I was just meditating, so it's natural to think that my Mind values wouldn't be very high. I was never able to study during those periods and basically did what I did to pass the time. But this is relatively higher than the others, which seem to be closely related to my body... Not that Strength makes sense; heavens, I don't have muscles, but in fantasy logic, I have nothing to argue about."

"Night vision is a big help since I don't see any source of light nearby, and yet I can see the entire place perfectly. I just can't look too far down the corridor," which, after a certain distance, seemed to be embraced by shadows, making it complex for David to know where he was really going.

David knew he couldn't stay there for long, so he simply tightened the rusty sword he was holding and finally started walking.

It was strange; even though he was basically a human skeleton, not much different, perhaps thicker and more resistant, he still had all the sensations a person would have. The only thing that bothered him a bit was walking, but it didn't seem like it would hurt him in any way.

It seemed like this corridor was larger than he expected and strangely unchanging. Sometimes he wondered if he was in the physical world or some kind of joke by that god. But finally, when he least expected it, he began to hear something.

When he walked a little further, he saw something very strange.

He witnessed an undead, perhaps a zombie, but he wasn't so sure, feeding on what seemed to be an adventurer.

The young woman might have died not long ago and was now slowly being torn apart by the zombie.

David froze at this moment. He thought that being a skeleton would have somehow affected his morality, but he was wrong. There was a dead person in front of him, and it shook him very strongly, especially when he remembered that he hadn't felt strong emotions for decades.

David seemed to try to vomit, but nothing came out, and he felt nothing about it.

However, he knew it wasn't the time for him to back down, so he slowly started walking towards the corpse. Unfortunately, it seemed that his lack of flesh on his feet made him very easily noticeable to others, and the zombie quickly turned towards him.

"Why can't things be easier? Heavens, I don't even have flesh; what are you going to do with my bones?"

The zombie seemed faster than David expected, and unexpectedly, it started charging towards David.

David didn't expect to lose, and it seemed like he was colder than usual for a situation like this. Even though he had no knowledge of sword techniques, he at least knew which side was sharp and, trying to use the zombie's own stupidity, he quickly tried to position himself so that the zombie would impale itself on the sword.

He failed completely.

David was quickly thrown to the ground by the zombie, which started brutally biting his arm.

David didn't know if zombies were supposed to be this strong, and if he were a human, he would probably already be screwed at this point, as he would be incapacitated and would probably die, as happened with the young woman a few meters away.

Fortunately, he was a skeleton; muscles? He didn't need them. Feeling almost no pain from what was happening, he forced his arm even further into the zombie's head, and after gripping his sword tightly, he quickly struck the head of that thing, killing it almost instantly.

Zombie lv 07 killed.

soul absorbed

2 Points gained.

David didn't see any "SOUL" being absorbed, but if the system said so, who was he to deny it?

David wanted to know more about these points, but before that, he went to see the body of the young woman to see if there was anything he could use himself.

David wasn't a monster, at least internally. She was already dead, and he didn't think she still needed those things.

She seemed to be a beginner adventurer and didn't seem to have very useful items. What she did have clearly didn't seem like it would fit David, who was much larger than her, even though he was very thin due to his condition.

After touching the young woman to pick up some of her items, he quickly received a new message.

soul absorbed

2 Points gained.

"So I don't necessarily need to kill to earn points. Interesting."

"Maybe that's why he wanted to put this system into practice? Even the young woman, though dead, her soul was still in the world. Perhaps some souls linger for a long time, causing suffering for both these people and the entire reincarnation system to become increasingly inefficient."

"At least I can help her this way..."

David thought this as he stared at the morbid face of the young woman, whom he might have found attractive if he had known her in life.

Unfortunately, the only thing David could reuse from her was her cloak, an excellent black hooded cloak that seemed to cover David's head and body well but didn't appear to offer him any protection. Her boots were leather, very sturdy, and typical for this profession. Even though it looked extremely odd, he was still able to wear the pants the young woman had on, but the leather shirt was simply impossible since it was totally destroyed. He also obtained what interested him most, a weapon. More precisely, a spear.

With a system like this and with magic, David didn't really want to follow a martial path, but a weapon at this point was absolutely essential. Plus, spears were stylish.

This spear seemed very simple, of average size and common steel, but extremely sturdy. It would certainly help him in the early stages of his journey, at least he hoped so.

David also found what appeared to be a book, but because he didn't know the local language, it was simply useless, and since he had nothing to carry it with, he left it where he found it.

The hooded cloak he was wearing easily covered his entire body, but it wasn't anything that would protect him, and it might even hinder him. However, not wearing any clothes was really strange, and with this spear and cloak, David looked very much like a necromancer. Maybe that could scare off unsuspecting adventurers, but he didn't expect much from it.
