Side Chapter 1

Since the invention of the Nexusnet, gaming has been one of the most popular past times. Though NexusVR’s quality was much higher than any forms of gaming, the most successful has been one that could be played in handheld Vanes.

‘If you want to succeed, don’t game’. She disagreed with those words heavily. A healthy amount of hobby just makes you happier and from a ruler’s standpoint that means higher productivity. So, Milyaa had been playing a game called ‘Space Smashers’ for a while now.

The premise was simple. You control two space ships and must hit the ball to the opponent’s side. You score a point if they fail to send it back. What made it so addicting was the skill needed. One can place a shield on your ships and you must choose whether to put it at the top, side, or bottom. Shields make your hit harder and faster thus making it more difficult for them to send it back.

It has been a ton of fun for her especially since her uncle and her grandma played it too. If she checked their feed, she could see their streak and what meta they were playing with.

‘I’d like to see the faces of the players if they knew Lyudmilla Mendeleyev is top #21 on the leatherboards.’

The game has been a tool to watch her family from afar while not contacting them. They were just too protective and suffocating. It also feels nice but for her own development as an adult, she feels it necessary to distance herself from them. At least, for a good 2 years.

‘Should I invite Izo Shelley to a game of Space Smashers?’

Reading his transcripts, Milyaa felt really bad for him but also how lucky she was. Her grandma had never dated and never fallen in love so in her old age decided to adopt a child. The leader of the Mendeleyev family didn’t think too hard and chose at random.

At times, she feels the need to try very hard to fulfill her grandma’s wishes. So, she understands a bit, Izo’s feeling of inadequacy at times. Only that her family actually loves her.

‘I’ll invite him and another to play doubles with Uncle. Only when they’re relatively settled here.’
