Chapter 15: Sorin with Mixed Feelings

Chapter 15: Sorin with Mixed Feelings

Just now, why is Sorin so entangled? This is because, at this time, Benjamin's image does not look like that of a good person.

From Sorin's perspective, Benjamin is wearing a large black cloak, as if it were a mysterious fabric fished out of the abyss of darkness, constantly emitting wisps of black mist. The hood is completely shrouded in the thick black mist, like an impenetrable barrier, making it impossible to peer inside and see what face is hidden there.

Sorin tried hard to see what the person under the cloak looked like, but could only vaguely feel three gazes looking up and down at him. What? You ask why three? It turned out that there was a Misty Crow and the black Fluffy standing on Benjamin's left and right shoulders respectively. The Misty Crow Eyes glowed with a strange light, and Fluffy stared with its round eyes, the three gazes meeting together, sending a chill down one's spine.

Anyone who saw this strange outfit, combined with the barren ground and the forest behind him burning with flames, would subconsciously feel that this was a super boss. No one would feel at ease, and Sorin was no exception.

Benjamin, on the other hand, was sizing up the young man who had emerged from the bushes. The young man looked to be about the same age as himself, perhaps twenty or thirty-four years old. He had a handsome face and was wearing a dirty tracksuit that was covered in rips. He looked as if it had been through a lot. At the moment, the other party was holding a long, refined iron stick tightly, which was gleaming coldly in the sunlight, and he was looking at Benjamin with a wary expression.

“A surviving Contractor?”Benjamin immediately understood, noticing the other person's modern attire and the long, thin rod he was holding in his hand.

“I've really got some luck, meeting another Contractor on the last day. But then again, there's no danger of killing a Contractor in this world, since they don't drop any items, right?”

The two of them just stood there in silence, neither saying a word. They were both frozen in place, unable to move, as they watched each other. However, inside, their minds were in turmoil, their thoughts racing. The standoff lasted three whole minutes, and Fluffy, who was perched on Benjamin's shoulder, felt extremely embarrassed as if she were in the middle of a really weird scene.

“Are you a contractor?”

“You're the contractor?”

Perhaps they both felt that the atmosphere was too awkward and both wanted to break the current stalemate, so they ended up asking the question at the same time. They both froze for a moment when they heard the question. Then they fell back into the awkward status quo, staring at each other in silence. The atmosphere became even more frozen as if the air around them had been frozen.

“This can't go on, I have to do something, this is so damn embarrassing!”Benjamin thought to himself, as the awkward atmosphere made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles. He was spinning rapidly in his head, desperately trying to think of a way to break the ice and create an opportunity for friendly communication between the two of them. Suddenly, a bright idea struck him.

“Put the stick down and put your hands behind your head.”Benjamin quickly reached under his cloak and pointed the muzzle of the [revolver] directly at Sorin. This was a strange way to ‘be friendly’...

Sorin was shocked to see the other person suddenly pull out a pistol. His mind raced as he quickly assessed the distance between them. Feeling a chill in his heart, he knew he could never avoid this fatal blow, so he quickly and obediently put down the refined iron stick in his hand. He was no Iron Man or Hulk, and he was afraid to take the bullet with his own body.

...

In the evening, Benjamin stood quietly by the campfire, his hands skillfully turning the meat on the grill. As the meat was turned over and over, the tempting aroma of meat drifted out, accompanied by the occasional sizzling sound of fat dripping into the flames. It was like a beautiful symphony of cooking.

Next to Benjamin, Sorin carefully cleans the stone cups on the wooden table. His movements are gentle and serious as if he were treating a precious work of art. After cleaning, he tells Fluffy to pour the juice that Benjamin has transformed from wild fruit into the cups.

Why is there such a harmonious scene?

Let's turn the clock back to the moment when the two of them first met and were caught in an awkward situation.

After Sorin had lowered his weapon, Benjamin told Fluffy to use its tiny body to pull the iron bar on the ground to the side and then ordered the Misty Crow to fly onto the other person's shoulder, before slowly lowering his Revolver. Then, he took a little distance, and after a careful observation to make sure that the other person was not a threat for the time being, Benjamin slowly lowered his hood as a sign of his goodwill.

Sorin finally saw Benjamin's true face, which was that of a man of his own age. The other person looked a little handsome, and there was a kind of affinity between his eyebrows and eyes, giving a feeling of being easy to get along with. If you ignore the strange attire, Benjamin looks like a completely nice person.

It seems that Benjamin is still very approachable when he is not being weird. Comparing Benjamin's previous mysterious and strange image, Sorin couldn't help but sigh in his heart, “First impressions really matter.”

Then something magical happened. The two had a friendly chat and then hit it off like old friends...

It was a bit unorthodox, to say the least.

During the conversation, Benjamin learned that Sorin had been exploring a mysterious cave when he was taught a harsh lesson by a fierce beast inside. The beast was extremely vengeful and chased Sorin all the way from the cave to the nearby area before reluctantly giving up the chase. At that time, Sorin was very puzzled as to why the beast suddenly stopped chasing him, but then he heard a series of deafening explosions coming from afar. He thought that the explosions were probably caused by other contractors, so he planned to rush over to check the situation. Who would have thought that he would find a seemingly super-unruly “boss”?

Meanwhile, Benjamin also told Sorin part of his own experience. In the course of their conversation, the two suddenly discovered that there were many similarities in their encounters, and they felt quite sympathetic towards each other.

So, with Fluffy's confused expression, Benjamin and Sorin reached a consensus and decided to move together for the rest of the day. They felt that although time was running out, it was always good to have each other's back.

To celebrate this wonderful encounter, Benjamin enthusiastically invited Sorin to go a little further afield to hunt some game, then return to the campsite to barbecue, and he promised to cook himself. Sorin was curious about the campsite Benjamin mentioned, and more importantly, the barbecue Benjamin talked about was too tempting for someone who had been suffering for several days. He almost didn't hesitate and readily accepted Benjamin's invitation.

The two of them set off together, hunted a few animals, and picked a bunch of wild fruit along the way. In the process, Benjamin finally obtained the passive skill [Firearms Basics] as he had wished.

Although he had been mentally prepared, when Sorin saw the campsite Benjamin had mentioned, he was shocked and dumbfounded and felt like his worldview had been greatly impacted. “They're both contractors, and they're in the same world, so why is there such a big difference in their lives?”

Sorin looked at the campsite, which was full of all kinds of household items such as hammocks and pots and pans, and his emotions became extremely complex. An inexplicable sense of sadness welled up in his heart, and he even felt like crying a little. He began to imagine the comfortable life that Benjamin had here and then compared it to his previous plight. The contrast was a bit hard for him to accept.
