Chapter 10: The Side Task

Chapter 10: The Side Task

From time to time, the forest resounded with the sound of explosions, which reverberated through the forest like thunder. The nearby small animals were all scared, and they all cowered in their nests, trembling and afraid to go out.

This is the third chase Benjamin has participated in today, but unlike the previous two, now Benjamin is the pursuer, and the target he is pursuing is the culprit that has caused him to experience all the frustrating events of the day. Benjamin's eyes burn with anger, his teeth clenched as he clutches the last of the Explosive Fruits in his hand. His mind is full of determination, determined to catch this wretched monkey.

Benjamin took a deep breath to calm himself down. Learning from his previous failure, he made a prediction, calculating the monkey's escape route and speed in his head. Then, he threw the Explosive Fruit with all his strength. This time, the monkey's evasive maneuvers did not help much, and it was hit by the blast of the fruit, so it was injured and had to reduce its escape speed.

The chase lasted for more than half an hour, like a long marathon. Benjamin kept running and chasing, his shirt drenched in sweat, his breathing becoming rapid and heavy. In the end, it ended with Benjamin's successful capture.

“You really can run, can't you? Keep running? Keep laughing?”

Benjamin was out of breath from running, and he finally got some release from his anger as he knocked the monkey to the ground.

“You can choose to be burned to death or beaten to death,”

He also fully demonstrated his humanitarian spirit by letting the monkey choose a death method that would satisfy it.

However, the monkey just looked at him in horror and was unable to respond.

After tying the monkey up securely, Benjamin suddenly noticed that something was a bit off about his surroundings. At that moment, a light mist floated through the forest, which Benjamin had not encountered before. The mist was like a light veil, slowly drifting through the forest, adding a mysterious atmosphere to the entire forest.

Benjamin covered his nose and mouth with his cloak and pulled the monkey's tail to continue walking. Benjamin noticed that the fog got thicker the further he walked. The fog seemed to have a life of its own, constantly wrapping around him and blurring his vision. Later, he could also gradually hear a crow-like cry.

“Mmm-mm-mm...”

The cry echoed in the fog, making it seem especially eerie.

As the sound of the crowing became clearer, the skeletal remains of various animals slowly appeared along the way. The skeletons were scattered on the ground, some of them were already dismembered, while others still maintained their original shape. Benjamin felt a sense of unease rising in his heart. Guided by the crowing, Benjamin noticed an unusually tall and luxuriant giant tree in front of him.

The black leaves on the giant tree moved by themselves in the wind. From time to time, there was a creepy crowing sound coming from the top of the tree.

Not knowing what to expect, Benjamin did not approach it recklessly, but threw the defenseless monkey next to the tree with all his strength and quickly backed away.

The sound of the monkey landing startled the crows in the tree, and a loud flapping of wings came from the top of the tree.

After this deafening noise, Benjamin saw the dark leaves on the tree fall one after the other and gather towards the monkey's position. Only then did Benjamin realize that these were not dark leaves at all, but a group of crows perched on this huge dead tree. The crows were as black as ink, with red flashes in their eyes.

In just a moment, the crows flew back to the dead tree, as if nothing had happened, except that there was now a pile of clean white bones on the ground.

“Luckily I didn't go any closer.”

Seeing this scene in front of him, Benjamin found cold sweat breaking out on his back. He was secretly glad that he had deliberately used plants to create such a cloak to cover his scent before setting off. Without this cloak, he might have also become food for those crows by now.

[Accept task or not]

Benjamin stared at the information in front of him, his eyes betraying deep hesitation. The mysterious and dangerous Misty Crows kept popping into his mind. They were clearly not easy to deal with, and there was also a task penalty, which made him feel a huge amount of pressure. However, the tempting task reward kept popping up in his mind, which was too attractive for him, who still owed external debts.

“Take a leap of faith! Risk it all and turn a small thing into a big opportunity.”

Benjamin gritted his teeth and finally made up his mind, choosing to accept the task.

“rashness definitely won't work. I have to go back and make a detailed plan. It's not impossible to complete the task, but it will require a little risk.”

Benjamin glanced fearfully at the dead tree and the bones beneath it, and then he resolutely retraced his steps.

...

[Time remaining: 1 day, 18 hours]

[Number of contractors: 9]

The next day, Benjamin returned to the Misty Woods. This mission might be a bit dangerous, so Benjamin left Fluffy at home.

Last night, Benjamin thought long and hard and prepared a comprehensive plan, intending to complete the side task within the day.

Benjamin untied the large bundle on his back and took out the wood, hay, and other miscellaneous items he had collected along the way.

To ensure that the plan would go without a hitch, Benjamin emptied his storage space. Then, with measured steps, he set off towards the Explosive Fruit Forest.

When Benjamin arrived at the Explosive Fruit Forest, a feeling of excitement welled up in him. This place had become his secret explosives depot.

He skillfully selected the ripe Explosive Fruits and carefully put them in his bag. Incidentally, he set a few trees on fire again and watched the flames blaze and crackle like firecrackers.

Benjamin slowly crouches down on an open patch of ground and draws a complex and mysterious alchemy array on the ground. The alchemy array emits a faint glow. He places the miscellaneous items he just took out with the Explosive Fruit, waves his hands, and mutters something. In no time at all, more than ten scarecrows appear before him.

Benjamin carefully arranges the scarecrows closer to the crows, which is the first part of his plan.

Then Benjamin quietly moved away from the scarecrows and took a ball of string from under his cloak. He climbed nimbly up a tree and, between the trees, carefully arranged the string with light, skillful movements. In no time at all, the trees were covered with the string. The string was almost invisible, hidden by the mist. An unwary creature that ventured in would easily run into it.

This fine thread is a by-product of Benjamin's second development of Spider Silk yesterday. Now Spider Silk has an additional derived effect.

Spider Silk (derived skill)

Quality: EX

Effect: Can create a 5-meter-long spider silk that can be extended and retracted at will. Spider silk is extremely sticky and tough, and costs only 5 MP.

Derived Effect 1: Spider Silk Launch, can extend the spider silk and launch it precisely to the designated location.

Derived effect 2: Spider Silk Harden, which makes the spider silk incredibly strong and adds the effect “Sharp”. At this time, the spider silk no longer has stickiness but is like a sharp blade.

Description: Spider silk becomes increasingly abnormal in your hands.

This is the result of Benjamin's attempt to combine the sticky threads produced by Spider Silk with the Abandoned Dagger. The dagger's curled blade had long since lost its sharpness and was basically no better than scrap metal. While thinking about his plan, Benjamin had a brainstorm and wondered if he could make some use of the scrap metal, which led to this amazing by-product.

Benjamin has now used the secondary skill transformation twice. He wants to save his last chance for the derived skill of Magic Missile. Various possibilities have already come to mind in his mind as to how he could derive Magic Missile.

In this way, Benjamin is once again satisfied that all five skill slots in his Active skill bar are in an empty status.

He would have to be careful in the future about which skills to choose and how to combine them.

After all, he didn't know if there would be another opportunity like this outside of the initial space to support the transformation of skills.

Anyway, the second plan was now in place.

Benjamin began to prepare for the final plan, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

This time, Benjamin is going to build a fortress. Armed with powerful Alchemy, he easily constructs a small stone fortress on the flat ground. The fortress is sturdy and imposing, with many holes left open at the top for throwing Explosive Fruit out. To facilitate escape, Benjamin also builds a hidden secret passage underneath the fortress.

The secret passage wasn't very long, because Benjamin had used up most of his MP during the previous series of operations, otherwise he would have built it a bit longer.

Now that everything was ready, he just hoped for some luck.

He hoped that there would be fewer crows attacking the bastion when the plan was finally carried out.
