The following day, Merig dispatches one of his trusted guards to deliver a letter to Queen Eirawen. A few days later, the queen responds, inviting Kate and Merig to visit her at Rath Castle. Excitedly, the couple accepts the invitation and plans to make the journey that very day. Bundled up against the chilly snowfall, the two lovers embark on their trip through the wintry city. As they approach Rath Castle, they marvel at the magnificent architecture and grandeur of the ancient structures. Upon reaching their destination, they are welcomed by Queen Eirawen herself in the hanging garden. Kate and Merig approach, bowing before Her Majesty, containing their excitement at meeting the influential ruler and friend who approved of their meeting together.
(K)Good morning, Your Highness.
(M)We thank you for inviting us here to be in your presence.
Eirawen approaches and positions herself directly in front of Kate and Merig, motioning for them to straighten their posture. With a warm smile, the queen extends her arms to Kate, and the two women smile and giggle before embracing each other with excitement. Eirawen then separates from the embrace and begins to speak.
(E)It’s so good to see you, Kate, my friend.
(K)It’s so good to see you, too, Your Highness.
(E)Kate, I’ve told you the formalities aren’t necessary. Just call me Eirawen.
(K)Of course, Eirawen, it’s been so long. I see your garden got snowed on.
(E)I heard about you and Merig getting engaged and I was ecstatic. Congratulations to you both. And yes, I have to get someone out here to clean up all this snow. It’s so cold out here, I’m even wearing my winter coat, as you can see.
(K)It looks very cozy. And thank you so much, Eirawen. It was a big surprise and I’m truly happy to become a wife to Merig. He’s just been so wonderful to me. Would you like to see the ring?
(E)Yes! I would love to see it.
Kate beams as she eagerly extends her hand, showcasing her dazzling engagement ring to Eirawen. The queen gently takes Kate’s hand, her eyes scanning the ring with evident fascination. A gasp escapes Eirawen’s lips as she marvels at the exquisite piece. Her gaze then lifts to meet Kate’s, and a radiant smile illuminates her face before she begins to speak.
(E)Oh, it's absolutely gorgeous! I remember when Merig came to me asking if I knew anyone who could make this specific ring. And I was more than happy to lend him my personal jeweler. It seems that the jeweler did not disappoint.
(K)Oh absolutely not, I love it so much. I didn't hesitate to say yes when Merig asked me to marry him.
(E)I don’t doubt that one bit. I know just how much you love each other. Merig is my most beloved knight, and you are both my beloved friends.
Eirawen releases Kate's hand and turns to Merig, her face breaking into a warm smile. She extends her arms invitingly, and Merig responds with a matching gesture, drawing her into a tender embrace. As they pull apart, their shared smiles linger, but a touch of humility softens Merig's expression as he begins to speak softly.
(M)And you have been nothing but gracious to us, Your Highness. I’m only but a mere Royal Guard. Referring to me as a knight is a bit overzealous, don’t you think?
(E)Oh nonsense, Merig, you're a brave knight as far as I'm concerned. Your bravery and strength in this city are unmatched and I’m more than enthusiastic to give you the title of “knight”. You deserve it and one day I will hold a knighting ceremony just for you. But first, your duty is to marry this woman.
(M)Of course, Your Majesty. It is a joy that this woman agreed to be wedded to a Fomor such as myself. It really is a privilege of the highest order.
(E)[smiles] I can imagine and just like Kate here, there’s no need for the formalities. You’re both more than welcome to converse with me as friends.
(M)Of course, Eirawen. I just feel it’s inappropriate, but if you insist, I cannot dispute her majesty.
(E)Of course, we are equals in my eyes. So, what brings you here to see me?
(K)Well, we wanted to ask you something. It’s about our wedding and where we would like it to be held, along with the reception.
(E)Oh? I’ve already decided, if there’s anything you need from me for this wedding, consider it done. I’ll even help you with the proper documents to make it official. I’d be happy to accommodate you both in exchange for an invitation, of course. I wouldn’t miss this wedding for the world.
(K)Of course, Eirawen. It would be of the utmost privilege to have Her Majesty as a guest. But I’ll do you one better, how about the officiant?
(E)[gasp] Me? You want me to marry you both?
(K)Absolutely, it would be an honor to have the queen as the one who officiates at our wedding. We would love nothing more from her Highness.
(E)Then it shall be done, and anything else you request.
(K)Well, we would love to have the reception at the banquet hall, if that’s not too much.
(E)Of course not, it’s all yours.
(K)And as well as the location of the wedding ceremony.
(E)Oh? And where would you like to have the ceremony?
(K)I know this may sound strange, but we want to have it at the square.
(E)The city square? But why there? You don’t wish to be married in a church?
(K)The square is significant. It’s where Merig and I first confessed our love for each other and he gave me this necklace that I wear every day that, as you know, brought Merig back to life. It glows under the moon and he took me to the square to show me. There, he told me he loves me.
(E)That’s right, how could I forget? That warms my heart, Kate. The location is yours. Consider it done. I’ll have it scheduled for that day.
(K)Actually, we want to have the wedding at night.
(E)An evening ceremony? That’s not very common.
(K)No, it isn’t, but when Merig confessed his love, it was at night under a full moon. I would love to relive that moment on our wedding day.
(E)[smiles] You’re always such a sentimental person, Kate, I admire that about you. Consider everything you've requested done and I’ll make the arrangements so you don’t have to. Just tell me all the details and I’ll make sure it happens.
(K)Oh thank you so much, Eirawen, you have no idea how much this means to Merig and me and I’m forever grateful to Her Highness.
(E)Think nothing of it, Kate. You and Merig are my dearest friends. You also saved Merig’s life, the knight I treasure in this kingdom. You are in the highest of my regards, and I’m more than happy to accommodate you both in this betrothal.
(M)Thank you, Eirawen. Getting married to this woman is as much of an honor as it is serving her majesty.
(E)Merig, this woman is number one in your life, second to your duty as a guard. She has priority, so anything that pertains to her comes before your work.
(M)Yes, ma’am, then it is more of an honor to be betrothed to the woman I love more than anything. I’ll see to it that this woman is nothing but happy.
(E)Much better, Merig, nothing is more important than this person you love the most. I’ll send one of my knights over so we can communicate better. You tell him details and he can relay messages from you to me.
(K)Sounds good to me, whatever you think helps us with our wedding planning. Also, the wedding date is April thirteenth.
(E)Wonderful, I will make a note of it. A spring wedding will be absolutely gorgeous. Also, when you go to pick out your wedding dress, you let them know that I sent you. I will have a note for you to pass on to them so they don’t turn you away.
(K)Oh, you don’t have to do that Eirawen, you’re doing enough as it is.
(E)Don’t you worry, Kate, it’s no trouble at all. I’m just helping out my friends, so think nothing of it.
(M)Thank you so much again, Eirawen, you won’t regret this.
(E)Surely not, Merig, it’s my pleasure to bring joy to my friends and a pleasure to be a part of this wedding. Although I do have an appointment soon, I’m so sorry, but we will see each other again, I promise. I can schedule a date for us to have tea and talk more if you want, Kate.
(K)That would be wonderful. I do miss our tea dates.[wink]
(E)[giggles] As do I, my friend. Enjoy the planning of this beautiful wedding. I give you my regards and wish nothing but the best for you both. But for now, I bid you both farewell.
(M)Goodbye, for now, Your Highness.
(K)Goodbye, Eirawen. It was nice seeing you again.
(E)It was wonderful seeing you and Merig as well, Kate. May you both be blessed.
(K)You as well, your majesty.
Kate and Merig share one final embrace with the queen before bidding her farewell and exiting the hanging garden and Rath Castle. They make their way to the pub and enter, finding Barth, Larry, and Ashley seated at their usual table. The couple approaches the table with beaming smiles, taking their seats side by side. The others turn to face them, and Ashley is the first to offer a greeting.
(A)Hey you two, how'd your visit to the Eirawen go?
(K)Exactly as I thought it would. She'll be making the arrangements for the venues and she also gave me a note for the wedding boutique. She told me to pick out a wedding dress and she would take care of it. She’s doing all of this and in exchange, I’m inviting her to the wedding as an officiant. So she’ll be the one to marry us.
(A)Holy shit, that's very generous of her.
(K)I know, right? I was thinking about going to the wedding shop today and picking out a dress. Eirawen is such a wonderful friend and a magnificent queen.
(A)Let’s do it, it’ll be fun!
(M)Also, the queen said she’s going to make me a knight soon.
(L)Merig, are you serious!?
(B)No way, little brother.
(M)You can ask Kate, she was there.
(K)He's not lying, it's true. She said she wants to hold a ceremony and everything.
(L)Damn, that's amazing, pal.
(B)Doesn't that entail more responsibilities, though?
(M)Not really, I'd still be leading the guards, but “knight” is just a title.
(L)Sir Merig Flynn, I like the sound of that.
(M)Yeah, me too, I’ve worked hard for it, though.
(K)[smiles] I like it, too. Almost as much as I like the title, “Mrs. Flynn”.
(A)Oh, I don't doubt that one bit, girlie. So, do you want me to go with you to the wedding boutique?
(K)Of course, you have to pick out your maid of honor dress.
(A)[gasp] Me?! Maid of honor?! Really?!
(K)Well, yeah, you're my best friend, right?
(A)Oh of course, absolutely! I just didn’t expect you to pick me as your maid of honor. I'd be absolutely thrilled, Kate.
(K)Of course, I’d pick you, who else would I pick? Are you sure you want to be my maid of honor?
(A)Why wouldn’t I, hun? You're like my sister and my best friend. Of course, I'll be your maid of honor.
(K)Alright then, we can visit all the places we need to. The dress shop, flower shop, Charlotte's bakery, and anything else we'd need. Although, I don't want to spend too much money.
(M)Hey, don't even worry, Eirawen is making the venue arrangements, and she's even funding your wedding dress and we'll need all the other stuff for the ceremony and the reception. Whatever else we need, I'll take care of it.
(K)Absolutely not, Merig. I won't be putting all of that burden on you. I talked to my parents, and they said they'd be helping fund the wedding.
(M)Well then I'll help too, there's no reason I can't, this is my wedding too, sweetheart.
(K)[sigh] You're right, just don't burden yourself too much, okay my love?
(M)Hey, It’ll be no burden at all.
(L)Oh! Am I gonna be your best man, Merig?!
(M)Of course, Larry, you're my best buddy.
(L)Woohoo!
(B)What about me? I'm your brother.
(M)[sigh] Of course, Barth, you can be a groomsman. Since Larry is my best friend, he gets to be the best man.
(A)He's right Barth, in a wedding the best friends are the ones to be the maid of honor and the best man.
(B)I get it, I'll be fine with just being a groomsman, then.
(M)You can still help us plan the wedding if you'd like.
(B)That'd be great and all, but I wanted to continue my training, remember?
(M)Shit! That's right, we were supposed to go to the training grounds after we came back from visiting the queen.
(B)It's fine, we can still go. It's only the afternoon. We can go train while the women go dress shopping.
(K)That’s a good idea, Barth. Go ahead and do some more training with Barth. Okay, my love? Ash and I will go to the wedding boutique.
(M)Okay, sweetheart, you and Ash go have fun and stay warm.
(K)Okay, my love. I love you. We’ll meet you at the training grounds when we’re done.
(M)Alright, I love you, too, honey.
Kate and Merig share a knowing smile before Kate leans in for a tender kiss. She then rises from her seat, signaling their departure. Ashley turns to Larry, initiating their farewells. A shared smile passes between them, their eyes softening as Ashley begins to speak. Larry, ever the charmer, responds with his usual flirtatious banter.
(A)You go have fun with Merig and Barth at the training grounds. I'll see you later, handsome.
(L)Alright gorgeous, you go have fun dress shopping with Kate. You and I can rendezvous at my place tonight.[wink]
(A)[giggles] Sounds good to me. I love you, hon.
(L)I love you, too, hot stuff.
Ashley leans in and shares a farewell kiss with Larry before rising from her chair. She and Kate then make their way together towards the pub’s exit. The two women stroll through the city, their steps filled with a sense of purpose as they head toward the wedding boutique. After a time, Ashley turns to Kate, a warm smile gracing her lips as she begins to speak.
(A)I bet you’re excited about picking out a dress.
(K)Oh, I am, I can’t wait, I already have an idea of what I want to wear. I just hope Merig likes it.
(A)Typical Kate, you know damn well Merig will love anything you wear. He will fall in love with you all over again, I’m sure of it. Even after all this time of being with him, you still worry about what he’ll think of you.
(K)I know, I’m sorry. I just want to make him happy, that’s all. And hey, I’m not the only one that worries about his opinion. We talked the other night, and he’s still questioning whether he’s good enough for me or deserves me. He doesn’t doubt my love for him, he just doubts himself because he feels so lucky to be with me. I’m having to drill it into his head that he’s more deserving of my love than he thinks. I hate that he thinks he isn’t worthy, and I told him that sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve him. But then I realize that I must’ve done something good and I’m thankful for him and every other good thing that’s happened to me.
(A)Honey, you’ve done so many good things, you have no idea. You both question whether you deserve each other or not and you both need to realize that the only people who get to determine that is the person you’re with. If you say he’s worthy of your love, then he’s worthy. And if he says you’re worthy of his love, then it’s determined by him. Don’t let anyone else tell you two otherwise. You’re both so in love and you’re perfect together, but that’s just my opinion. I don’t get to decide your fate with Merig and you’re both so happy together, so embrace it, and don’t be so hard on yourselves.
(K)You’re right, Ash, I’m so thankful and blessed to have this life, and I stopped questioning it a long time ago. Merig is the one who told me that in the back of his mind, our differences are the reason that he doesn’t think he’s good enough for me. But I show him every day that he’s wrong and I’m sure when we say “I do”, he’ll understand that I’m serious about him and that this is what I truly want.
(A)I’ll drill it into his head for you if you need me to. He’s always been like this ever since he laid eyes on you, Kate. You’re perfect to him and he’s afraid to lose you. It’s his biggest fear.
(K)It’s my biggest fear too, Ash, and the fact is that I did lose him once, remember?
(A)Yeah, I remember. I’m sorry, Kate, I know it’s still painful for you, but you’re doing much better and you’re much happier since that happened.
(K)You’re right I am, now I’m just so excited about getting married to Merig, it’s all I think about most days ever since he proposed to me. I told him that there was nothing about him that made me not want to marry him and that I was more than happy to be his wife and to call him my husband. I could never love anyone else as much as I love Merig, not even a human man.
(A)I know exactly what you mean, we’ve both been hurt by human men, but Merig wouldn’t hurt one hair on your head, Kate. His love for you is undying and never-ending. Larry is the same way with me and he’s told me that he dares any human man to say that they love me more than he does, because he’ll prove that man wrong. Funny enough, just the other day, he confronted my ex, Ryan. He approached me in the pub one day and asked me if I was still single. When I told him that I wasn’t and told him I was with Larry, Ryan got angry and wouldn’t leave me alone. When Larry confronted Ryan, he started to provoke Larry. Larry got up and pointed to the pub door and told him to leave me alone. He was calm until Ryan called me a whore and Larry was not having one bit of that, so he told Ryan to screw off and threatened to get physical with him if he didn’t stop harassing me, along with some other colorful words. I’m so in love with that goblin.
(K)[giggles] Damn, I would’ve loved to see that fight. Larry is a sweetheart, though, and he loves you. I know Merig loves me and I see it every day. I just wish he could feel the emotions that I do when I’m with him, but it’s hard to describe to him sometimes. He knows I love him and I don’t want it to become a competition of who loves who more. I love him just as much as he loves me, and I’ve proven that to him.
(A)Oh honey, I know you have and he knows it, too. I’ve never heard him tell you that he loves you more than you love him.
(K)He’s never said that to me in private, either. I just never want it to come to that. I’m so worried that he’ll think I don’t love him or love him less for whatever reason. When he and Larry told us that they used to be bandits, he was so scared that I hated him. Later on, that day that they told us, he even asked if I was sure that I still loved him after knowing that. And I told him I did, and that he didn’t have to worry. You’re right, his worst fear is that I’ll stop loving him and we share that fear. But my biggest fear is losing him, to death. After he died in my arms, it left a scar on my heart and reopened past scars, despite the fact that I brought him back. Sometimes when I remember it, I feel this pain in my chest and it gets harder to breathe, and it sends me into a panic attack. The second Merig looks at me and touches me, I start to calm down and catch my breath. I do my best to avoid thinking about that painful night. I’m getting better, though, and it doesn’t affect me so much anymore when I think about it, and I’m thankful every day that he’s with me again.
The women continue their walk, but Kate's silence is broken only by the deepening frown on her face. Her eyes narrow as they begin to redden, fixed on the ground. Ashley moves closer, wrapping her arm around Kate in a comforting gesture. Kate takes a deep breath, her efforts to suppress tears evident. Ashley's voice softens as she offers words of comfort.
(A)Hey, everything is going to be okay, hon. Merig is still here, and he’s not going anywhere. He’s completely over the moon about getting married to you, and you’re the same way about getting married to him. This is also a time of healing and you two need to spend as much time as possible, planning this wedding and focusing on each other.
(K)I know, but Merig still has his duties as a Royal Guard, so I don’t want to overwhelm him. However, Eirawen did say that Merig’s top priority was me and this wedding and she’s very gracious and understanding. You’re right, I shouldn’t worry myself so much and focus on Merig and me and the wedding. This healing will take time and I already feel better just being with Merig, so getting married to him will be my solace.
(A)Exactly, this is a time to be happy for both of you and everyone else who’s going to be a part of it. I know I’m more than happy to be your maid of honor, and Larry is ecstatic to be Merig’s best man. This wedding is going to be perfect, and I’m going to help you make it that way. That’s my job as your maid of honor.
(K)You’re the best, Ash, I’m so glad you’re here or I don’t know what I would do.
(A)For right now, all you need to do is pick out your wedding dress. We’re almost at the boutique.
(K)You’re absolutely right, there’s no time to waste.
The two women continue their lively conversation as they stroll towards the wedding boutique. Meanwhile, Barth is immersed in rigorous guard training at the Royal Guard training grounds. He stands before a row of training dummies, his focus intense as he channels his magic through his specially designed gloves. With each surge of power, he launches elemental magic projectiles at the dummies, complementing his attacks with swift punches and kicks. Gordo is instructing and provides constant guidance on Barth's martial arts techniques, while Merig and Larry observe from a distance, their eyes fixed on Barth's every move.
(G)You're getting a bit sloppy there, Barth. Your form is lacking and your punches sometimes miss the target. You have to strike with your magic and then punch. Don’t try doing those at the same time!
Barth persists in attacking the dummies, following Gordo's guidance, but struggles to land consistent hits. Frustration mounts as time passes, and sweat drips down his face. Finally, panting heavily, he halts his efforts. Defeated, Barth turns to Gordo, his annoyed tone evident as he begins to speak.
(B)Maybe the gloves weren’t such a good idea. I’m better off just using magic, but I wanted to try something new. And there’s snow on the ground, so it’s hard to maintain my stance.
(G)Then just ditch the gloves, Barth, don’t force yourself. The snow is annoying to fight in, but it’s something even I had to learn.
(B)I’ll keep using the gloves since they amplify my spells, so I’ll just stick with using magic. Besides, I’m still helping Kate train her magic, so I don’t want to overwhelm myself while trying to learn new skills. Besides, close combat is your thing, Gordo. I’ve seen you spar with the guards, so you’re better at martial arts than me.
(G)Yeah, you’re better with magic, leave the ass-kicking to me. Also, with your magic, you can train solo if you want. But if you need someone to spar with, I’ll be here and I’m sure Merig and Larry will spar, too. Fighting different weapons with magic would be good for you since, as you know, bandits don’t just use one kind of weapon.
(B)That’s true, I’m a master mage, but I just need to hone and polish my skills.
(G)Maybe Merig will let you come with us when we go out into the forest to fight bandits. That will help you train better, too, instead of just being confined here.
(B)That would be a good idea, wouldn’t it, Merig?
(M)We’ll see, I want to see you fight more with the dummies for a while and spar with us before I take you outside the walls. Besides, this is only your first day of training, so I want you to take it slow.
(B)[sigh] Well then maybe some moving targets would help. The bandits out there aren’t exactly going to be stationary when I fight them.
(M)We’ll be your moving targets when we spar. Having all three of us spar will help you learn better to fight more than one target.
(B)Fine, I’ve been at this for a while. How about a break? My mana needs to recharge.
(M)Very well then, take a breather and chat with us.
(B)Thanks, little brother.
Barth removes his gloves as he and the other goblins depart from the training dummies, gathering at the nearby sheltered rest area. Fortunately, the area offers overhead protection and the seating remains snow-free. The four goblins select their seats and settle in comfortably before engaging in casual conversation and relaxation.
(G)So, Barth, you mentioned that you’re still training Kate to help her better her magic. How are you going to do that when you’re here, training to be a guard while Kate and Merig are planning their wedding?
(B)Good question, she could always come here and train while I train at the same time. She can spar with me and even you guys if she wants so she can get better at combat. What do you think, Merig?
(M)I think that’s a good idea. This is a training ground after all, and it would save time while we plan the wedding. That way it’s not overwhelming for you, having to be in two places in one day and you can still be here training Kate and yourself. I wouldn’t mind it, but I wouldn’t be sparing with her though and please go easy on her when you both spar.
(B)Well, of course, I'll go easy on her. It's just sparring and I wouldn't actually hurt her intentionally. But why don't you want to spar with her?
(M)I just wouldn’t feel comfortable shooting arrows and bolts at my soon-to-be wife and risk injuring her.
(B)Right, I understand that. You can always use arrows and bolts that aren’t sharp. And it would be good for her so she can train her magic for combat if she wanted.
(L)Yeah, you can use those training arrows. That way, she doesn’t get hurt.
(M)Maybe in the future, but for now I think she needs to just train her magic with Barth since he’ll only be using magic. Kate would be a good sparring partner for him to help them both train. I just wouldn’t feel right attacking her, even if it’s just sparring with dummy arrows. I see Kate as someone I want to protect, not harm if that makes sense.
(G)I completely understand and you probably wouldn’t want us attacking her with other weapons either, even if they won’t hurt her. It’s just sparring, but I get where you’re coming from.
(B)Now that I think about it, I don’t blame you, especially not after what she went through.
(L)You’re right, I can’t help but keep feeling really sorry for Kate. The way she looked at the pub the other day when Barth mentioned Cormac, broke my heart. I hope she’s okay.
(B)Yeah, I still feel like shit about saying anything. I didn’t mean to upset her, Merig. I hope she isn’t mad at me. I couldn’t live with myself if she was.
(M)It’s okay, Barth, she isn’t mad at you. You didn’t do anything wrong. You guys know that it was a bit rough for Kate after what happened, and I’m grateful she had you all and me to help her get through it. In the beginning, she stuck to me like glue when I wasn’t doing guard work and she still kind of does, but that doesn’t bother me. I can only imagine what she‘s been through internally since her nightmares were pretty bad for a while. When she’d wake up crying, I’d hold her until she stopped and she’d be so tired from it and fall asleep in my arms. You heard her say she’s been getting better, though, and it's true. I’ve seen her smile more, and she’s starting to be herself again.
(B)Yeah I’m glad she’s doing better, I’ve been worried. I remember she hardly came to the pub for a while after it happened.
(G)Yeah, and she stopped coming to the training grounds to hang out with us as often. I was actually worried about her and thought maybe something was wrong. But it wasn’t my business, so I didn’t pry.
You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
(L)Ash said she seemed exhausted every time she saw Kate, even when Ash went to visit her or took her out around the city to spend time with her. She said she just stopped doing what she usually does.
(M)That’s because she would be so tired from the nightmares and she’d sleep most of the day. When I’d come home, she’d fall asleep not long after we’d have dinner. She was too tired to cook, and I didn’t want to make her do it, so I was cooking for a while, but I didn’t mind. She always apologized for not being herself and doing her usual things, and I reassured her that she had nothing to be sorry for and that I was there for her, no matter what. Despite what she was going through, she still did what she could for me as well, and I’m more than grateful to her. We were even still intimate, but I've never forced her into anything and I still did my part and made her feel loved. She said that me making love to her really helped her and made her happy and that’s all I wanted.
(B)Yeah, I remember her telling us about some of that. She was pretty open about what she was going through, and I told her that she had all of us to talk to if she needed it. After that, she’d come to the pub just about every day to hang out with Ashley and me when you were off doing your guard duties, and after that, I'd help her train her magic. She let out a lot of the negative emotions when we’d have a training session and she loves using her lightning spells. She seemed like she felt much better after talking to us each time. It was good to see her start to smile again. I guess we all helped her in some way.
(G)When I’d escort her around the city or out in the forest when she foraged, she and I would talk and we became better friends despite what I did. She was very sweet, and she even treated me to lunch one time. She bought me a new pair of knuckles and I still have them and use them when I’m training. I did my best to cheer her up when she looked depressed and she thanked me for being there.
(L)There were times when Ash would come to my place on our days off and Kate would be home alone. She’d ask if she could come over because she didn't want to be alone and, of course, I told her she could and she'd sit and talk with Ash and me for hours. We didn’t mind it and we were more than willing to be of good company to her and she’d even shed tears when she thought she was a burden to people. We assured her that we care deeply for her and that seemed to make her happy and we were glad to see her start to perk up like her old self again.
(M)She and I are thankful to have you all here and she’s also been happier when it’s just her and me at home and we spend a lot of time together on my days off. I can tell it’s helping her, as well as myself since I went through a lot as well and she helped me get through that. We both talk to each other about anything and we don’t judge each other. Ever since I proposed to her, she’s been really happy and hasn’t even mentioned Cormac or that battle. But knowing she still has nightmares worries me because I feel like I haven’t been there for her enough.
(B)Hey, that’s not true at all, Merig. When Kate talked to Ash and me, she also sang your praises about how much you've been there for her. She never failed to tell us how lucky and grateful she is to have you when she's at her worst. You've been a wonderful companion to her and you'll be the best husband in the world in her eyes, and that’s coming from her.
(G)Yeah, she would even talk to me and tell me how worried she was that you might get tired of helping her when she needs you. She said she was afraid that you’d potentially leave her if you got overwhelmed from putting up with her and wished she could’ve done more to help you, since you went through it, too. Her words, not mine. But as time went on, she said she didn’t know what she would’ve done without you there and that you did more than enough to help her feel better.
(M)[chuckles] That’s good to hear. It makes me feel so much better knowing I've helped her. I love her so much and she's going to be the best wife in this world. She's already been an amazing woman and I keep wondering if I even deserve someone like her as my wife. Of course, she tells me that I do and she tells me to stop putting myself down.
(L)Well, she's absolutely right, Merig, there's no reason to put yourself down or question yourself. She loves you as much as you love her, and she agreed to marry you. If she didn’t want to marry you, she wouldn’t have said “yes” when you proposed.
(B)That's right, she said after everything you've done for her and how much you love her and take care of her. She thinks you deserve every bit of her love and care in return. She loves you, that woman worships you, Merig, like a damn god.
(M)[smiles] And she's my goddess that I worship, too.[sigh] I'm so lovesick for her. It should be a crime. But I can’t wait to marry her and spend the rest of my cursed Fomor life with her.
(L)I can't wait to see my best pal tie the knot with the woman he's been absolutely enamored with since he first laid eyes on her. But I don't have room to talk. I'll propose to Ash soon enough.
(B)I can’t wait either, you both make each other happy and I love seeing it.
(G)I wanted to ask her if I could be a part of the wedding, but I wanted to ask you first, Merig. I know you probably still hate me, but I just wanted to ask at least. I wanted to help how I could in return since you both helped me better myself.
(M)It’s possible, but I agree with her from the other day. I shouldn’t hold a grudge. I saw what it did to Cormac, and he wanted his revenge. I’ll give someone what they deserve, but I wouldn’t go as far as killing them, even if I was angry enough. Although, my rage has hurt people who hurt Kate and I almost beat the life out of someone for doing just that. But I realize that dwelling on it and letting it fester in my head would only hurt me and I would be an angry person. You guys know me. I’m pretty tame for a goblin, for the most part.
(L)You really are. You don’t have an evil bone in your body, Merig, even when you’re ready to tear someone apart. But that’s because you’re protecting the people you care about.
(G)Yeah, I remember how calm you were, and you were even nice to Larry, Cormac, and myself when you and Barth joined the camp. When you told the boss that you and Barth weren’t interested in hurting people and just needed a place to stay, everyone laughed at you. But the boss was okay with it, and all three of us defended you when the other bandits would antagonize you and Barth. Of course, Larry was the only one out of Cormac and I that didn’t hurt people either, and Larry was the first to suggest we all come here.
(L)My story is almost like Merig and Barth’s, but it’s a bit more complicated, as you all know. But this isn’t about me. I was happy to have your backs and fight off the assholes that messed with the Flynns.
(M)Yeah, I remember we all became friends pretty quickly, especially Larry and I. When he and I moved here, we stuck together like glue. We trained together to be guards, and we even got shit from the other guards because we were Fomors. But we didn’t take their shit, and we proved how strong and useful we were and they eventually accepted us. Larry got into a few scuffles for me and I can say he was the least passive one out of the two of us when the other guards would pick a fight. And once I could figure out what I was good at, I worked hard and the queen made me commander because I worked the hardest and showed more potential in her eyes. Larry and I are very grateful for Eirawen since she accepted us into the Royal Guards.
(L)Hey, I was glad to beat some asses when they messed with my best pal. They had no choice but to listen to us when the queen gave us our ranks, so they had to stop their harassment and even the queen stepped in and made them show us some respect. She gave us a place of our own to sleep and a handsome reward for protecting the city as we do, and it became our source of income. We were living better and more comfortably, like we planned and we worked our asses off.
(M)That we did and we couldn’t be happier and we were great at kicking bandits ass and we still are. Joining the guards was the best decision we had ever made, and I would do it all over again if I had to. I don’t regret a thing.
(L)Me either. Then that fiery goddess Ash came along and Merig and I became friends with her right away when she joined the guards as a royal alchemist and she worked her ass off as well, especially when she trained with me. I fell in love with that woman not long after we met, and I watched men use her as a doormat, but I did my best to cheer her up when she was upset. I love that woman so much, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.
(M)Yep, then Kate got here, and she sealed my fate. I fell in love with the most beautiful woman in my life and she fell in love with an ugly, sputtering, cackling, and bashful goblin that she’s been wonderful to, even though I’m still not convinced that I deserve her.
(L)Shut your face, Merig, one day you’ll understand that you do deserve her and that Kate says you do. That woman has surrendered herself to you and would do anything for you because she loves you and is happy to give you her love. She looks at you with a twinkle in her eyes that says that you shaped her entire universe and you're the center of it and you are the only one for her, while her love for you is endless. She doesn’t think that you’re ugly and is completely charmed and captivated by the sputtering, bashful, and cackling goblin that you are. If I have to drill that into your giant, thick goblin skull, then I will.
(M)[sigh] Maybe you’re right and maybe I need a wake-up call.
(B)You really do, Larry, and I will help you wake the hell up and smell the roses. Kate has never said anything negative about you and we’ve all proven that. When she got onto you about the way you treated Gordo, that was the only instance that I’ve seen where she didn’t approve of something you were doing. And to be honest, I agree with her, Gordo has done a lot to make up for what he did and I can attest to that and you’ve even seen it for yourself. I’m the one that brought him here because he’s still our friend and he regrets what he did. Kate did forgive him and you kept holding everything against him. It doesn’t excuse what he did, but at least he’s a better person and has helped protect Kate and the rest of the city.
(L)You don’t want to stoop to Cormac’s level, Merig, it’ll only plant a terrible seed inside of you and it will grow as your hatred does and turn you into a person that you’re not. And what would Kate think about you then? She’s the one who tried explaining that to you.
(M)You and her are absolutely right and I feel awful. I don’t want to end up becoming someone that Kate doesn’t love and then I won’t deserve her.
(B)Exactly, do what Cormac failed to do a long time ago and get your head out of your ass.
(M)[sigh] Right, today, things change with me and I work to be the person that Kate deserves. Gordo, I’m sorry for the way I’ve treated you. Kate was right. You've done a lot to make up for what you did. I just love her so much that I want to hurt people who’ve hurt her and I shouldn’t have dragged it on for that long since you’ve changed and bettered yourself. You’re still my friend and it’s time I forgave you since you’ve done a lot for us, so consider yourself forgiven by me. I hope you can forgive me for putting you through hell.
(G)It’s all water under the bridge, buddy. I know I deserved it for the most part and I’m still coming to terms with what I did and I’m working on forgiving myself. It’s hard because I do feel like a piece of shit for everything, but I guess we’re both working on forgiving.
(M)Yeah, but Kate was right, I’ve punished you enough and you’ve clearly learned your lesson.
(G)It wasn’t a matter of learning my lesson from punishment. I already knew what I did was wrong, and I paid for it and I was happy to take any punishment I got, even if it brought me pain. Kate is a sweet person, and we talked while she was in that cell at Cormac’s camp and I pretty much vented to her about what I went through and she sympathized with me and said I should better myself and she’d possibly forgive me. She made me see the light, and she’s the reason I made the decision to come here.
(M)[chuckles] I love that woman. She can bring light into the darkness and could stop the evil in this world if she tried.
(L)Oh absolutely, that woman alone would have defeated Cichol all by herself.
(G)Yeah, she could purify the hearts of every evil Fomor in the world.
(B)No doubt about that, her heart is purer than a lot of the people I’ve met and I’ll be proud to call her my sister-in-law. Well, on that note, I think I've rested enough. I'm ready to get back to training.
(M)Alright but this time, all three of us are going to spar.
(B)Sounds like fun. I'll go easy on you, little brother.
(M)[chuckles] We'll see about that.
(L)This should be good, just like old times.
(G)Alright, but don’t cry when I kick your ass, Barth.
(B)Ha! We’ll see who’s crying when I freeze your ass like I did at Cormac’s camp.
(M)Let’s go, you’ll both be crying when I get done.
The four goblins complete their break and rise from their resting place before returning to the training area. They assume their respective positions, preparing their weapons and assuming fighting stances. Barth readies a lightning spell, Merig loads his bow with training arrows, Larry grabs his training swords, and Gordo puts on his fighting knuckles and raises his fists. The three of them lock onto Barth and prepare to spar. Barth launches his lightning spell at the other goblins, causing them to scatter to avoid it. Gordo charges at him, ready to strike with his fists, while Barth charges an ice spear and throws it at Gordo, freezing him in place. Larry rushes at Barth, swinging his swords. Barth holds his arms up in a blocking stance, and Larry comes closer and hits Barth’s arms as he blocks the swords. Merig runs toward Barth, pointing his arrow at him as he shoots, and the arrow flies toward him. Barth charges a fire spell and throws it at the oncoming arrow, bringing it to the ground in flames. The four goblins enjoy their sparring session as the training continues. Meanwhile, the women arrive at Allison's Bridal Boutique. They enter and see a woman with long blonde hair putting dresses on display. The woman hears them enter and turns to see Ashley and Kate standing there, and she greets them with a smile.
(AL)Hello! Welcome to my shop! I’m Allison, the owner of this boutique. If there’s anything you need, please don’t hesitate.
(K)Thank you so much, Allison. I’m Kate, and this is actually our first time here, and we’d like to purchase a couple of dresses.
(AL)Wonderful! Who’s the bride?
(K)[smiles] That would be me and my best friend Ashley here is my maid of honor.
(AL)How delightful! If you'd like, I can take both of your measurements so we can find the perfect size for you and your maid of honor.
(K)That would be fantastic, Allison, thank you so much.
(AL)You’re most welcome, right this way.
Allison joyfully guides Ashley and Kate to a different room for their dress fittings. Upon entering the room, the women get ready to be measured while Allison takes out her measuring tape. She extends the measuring tape as Kate moves closer and Allison wraps it around different parts of Kate's body to ascertain the size of dress she will require. After finishing measuring Kate, Allison gestures for Ashley to come forward and proceeds to measure her as well. Once she has gathered Ashley and Kate's measurements, Allison jots them down before heading to the next room.
(AL)Alright, I have both of your measurements. Follow me and I’ll show you the dresses pertaining to your respective sizes.
(A)Actually I wanted to help Kate find her wedding dress first, is that okay? That way I can help her change into it if she needs it.
(AL)Of course, follow me then, and we’ll find the perfect dress for the bride.
Ashley and Kate trail behind Allison once more as she leads them to yet another area of the expansive room. Upon entering, they are greeted by a stunning array of green wedding dresses, and Kate's face lights up with a broad smile. Filled with excitement, she eagerly surveys the dresses, her eyes sparkling with delight as she begins to explore the options, searching for her favorite.
(AL)Now, is there a specific dress you are looking for? What color and style are you wanting?
(K)I absolutely love green, it’s my favorite color. I’d love to find a forest green dress, with brown accents maybe.
(AL)That’s an unusual color combination. Are you sure that’s what you want?
(K)Absolutely! I also don’t want the dress to be tight-fitting. Maybe something comfortable and loose and no corset with it. And if it’s not too much trouble, I’d love a pair of flat shoes, comfortable for my feet to walk in.
(AL)So green, loose-fitting, with flat shoes. Is that all? Would you like some jewelry to go with it?
(K)I’ll be wearing this necklace that my fiancé gave to me as a birthday gift when he confessed his love for me.
(AL)Oh how precious, that is so sweet. I can tell you’re a sentimental woman and not over the top, like some. I like that. You appreciate the little things in life, especially when it comes to love.
(K)Exactly, I’m a simple person when it comes to fashion and I don’t like anything heavy or bulky.
(AL)I completely understand. I do have a small selection of green wedding gowns if you want to take a look.
(K)That would be wonderful, Allison.
(AL)[smiles] Follow me.
Allison ushers Ashley and Kate towards another section of the expansive bridal suite. As they step into a verdant oasis of gowns, Kate’s face lights up with childlike wonder. A breathtaking array of green dresses in various shades and styles surrounds them, each one promising to transform the wearer into a fairytale princess. Kate’s eyes dart excitedly from one gown to the next as she searches for the perfect dress.
(AL)Here is the selection of green dresses in all different shades and styles. Take your time looking and if you need anything, just holler. I won’t be too far away.
(K)Thank you, again Allison, you’ve been a big help.
(AL)No problem at all, it’s my pleasure.
Allison turns and strides into the adjoining room, leaving the two friends alone. Kate dives into the sea of green gowns, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. Ashley stands by, ready to offer her expert opinion. As minutes turn into a longer stretch, a shadow of disappointment creeps across Kate's face. Unable to find the perfect dress, she turns to Ashley, her eyes filled with a mixture of hope and despair.
(K)I’ve looked at these at least three times and they’re just not what I’m looking for.
(A)You can always get one custom-made with all the details you want.
(K)Yeah, but who knows how long it will take to get made? I only have two months until our wedding.
(A)We’ll keep looking. Maybe Allison has something stashed away.
A few moments later, Allison re-enters the room. The once vibrant atmosphere now feels heavy. Kate stands among the green gowns, her shoulders slumped, while Ashley offers gentle encouragement. Allison’s face mirrors Kate’s distress. With a sympathetic look, she approaches the disheartened bride-to-be, her voice soft.
(AL)Did you not find what you were looking for?
(K)Unfortunately, none of these dresses are my ideal wedding dress. Are you sure these are all the green gowns you have?
(AL)Well, with all the details you gave me, I think I can find something for you and order it.
(K)My wedding is in April so I don’t think a custom dress would be made in time. Maybe I should go visit Eirawen again. Maybe she knows where to find the dress I’m looking for.
(AL)Eirawen? The queen?
(K)Yeah, she’s the one who sent me here to look for a dress for myself and my maid of honor.
(AL)Wait a minute you’re Kate, right? You’re the one getting married to the commander of the Royal Guards.
(K)That’s right, Oh Eirawen gave me a note to give to you and I completely forgot, here!
Kate reaches into her cloak pocket and produces an envelope, which she hands to Allison. Allison gently takes the letter and carefully opens it, noting the official queen's seal inside. A smile spreads across Allison's face as she reads the contents, and then she looks up at Kate, her expression still warm.
(AL)I understand, please follow me.
Ashley and Kate exchange a puzzled glance as Allison gestures for them to follow her. Without hesitation, the two women comply and Allison leads them to a secluded room that is securely locked. With a special key in hand, Allison unlocks the door and ushers them inside. As they step in, they are greeted by a spacious area that is almost half the size of the main boutique. The room is adorned with exquisite dresses, jewelry, and accessories on display. Ashley and Kate are in awe, their eyes wide and mouths agape. Kate is captivated by the sight before her, her voice filled with excitement as she admires the luxurious surroundings.
(K)Oh my goodness, this room is amazing and there are so many beautiful things here.
(A)It’s as if we’re standing in the queen's personal boutique.
(AL)Precisely, this room is not open to the public, but Her Majesty has instructed me to show you a specific dress that she has and she’s certain that you will love it. It’s right over here, so please follow me.
Allison strides over to a different section of the room, with Ashley and Kate trailing behind her once again. As they round the corner, they discover a cozy nook featuring a stunning dress displayed on a mannequin. Kate's eyes widen in awe as she takes in the breathtaking sight. The dress is a magnificent emerald green, designed in a strapless empire tent style that flows elegantly to the floor, complete with long, fitted off-the-shoulder sleeves. Thick oak-colored accents lace the fabric just above the bust and adorn the ends of the sleeves, complemented by an oak-colored sash cinched just beneath the bustline. Intricate Celtic-inspired patterns embellish the accents, and it’s clear that Kate is smitten with the gown. She glances at Ashley, and they exchange a thrilled smile before Kate speaks up.
(K)[gasp] Oh, Ashley it’s perfect! This is exactly what I was hoping to find.
(A)It’s definitely something you would wear, Kate. It’s as if it was made just for you.
(AL)So do you like it?
(K)I absolutely love it, Allison.
(AL)Marvelous! Then it belongs to you. The queen has requested that I present you with it in the letter you gave me. She presents it to you as a wedding gift from her.
(K)Oh Eirawen, she’s doing way too much already. I can’t possibly take this without some kind of compensation.
(AL)No need, it’s already paid for. She said she won’t take no for an answer. You have no choice but to take it as ordered by her majesty.[wink]
(K)[smiles] Well then, I guess it would be immoral of me to refuse a gift from the queen.
(A)Exactly, the queen has blessed you with this gorgeous dress and you cannot refuse.
(K)Alright, then I shall accept this gift from her highness.
(AL)Then I will get it ready for you to take with you.
(K)Wonderful, thank you so much, Allison.
(AL)It’s my pleasure.
The women giggle with excitement before Ashley and Kate resume their shopping, this time focusing on Ashley's maid-of-honor dress. They spend a considerable amount of time exploring the entire shop, searching for the perfect gown. As Ashley scans the room, uncertainty crosses her face, and she turns to her best friend to speak.
(A)Are you sure I can pick any dress I want?
(K)Ash, you’re my maid of honor, your dress is going to be unique to you, so pick whatever color and design you want.
(A)But I don’t want to outshine you. You’re the bride and you’re supposed to be the center of attention.
(K)Hey, I’m not worried about being the center of attention, you know that I am happy to share the spotlight with my best friend. Besides, everyone knows I’m the bride and everyone knows you’re my best friend and the maid of honor. I’m not a selfish person by any means and you are a part of my life and this wedding. And as the maid of honor, I want you to look beautiful, too. You deserve the spotlight and there’s room for more than one person. I want you, my best friend and my sister, standing right there behind me when I say my vows to Merig. I would’ve never met him or fallen in love with him had you not helped me start a new life here in Tara. Despite the bad that’s happened, the good will always outweigh it. Which is why I’ve been feeling so much better since the battle and you deserve praise and a place next to me in that spotlight. You also helped me in my time of need and I want you to feel appreciated.
(A)Kate, you truly are an amazing person, so selfless and humble, you always have been. You’re a strong person, too, and with everything you’ve been through in your life, you still manage to put on a smile and bring joy to others, especially the people closest to you. Thank you for being you and my best friend. I’ll happily stand next to you in that spotlight and watch you get married and be happy. It’s my job as your best friend to put a smile on your face and support you. I’d go to battle with you, which I already did to save you, and I’ll do it again. I brought you here to Tara so that I could have my best friend with me and honestly, if it wasn’t for you being here, Larry and I wouldn’t be together, either. You pushed me to give him a chance and he and I couldn’t be happier. So in a way, you helped me find happiness, too.
(K)Anything to make my loved ones happy, and thank you for being my best friend, the sister I never had. It’s my job to support you, too, but for now, my job is to find you a maid of honor dress and I’ll be paying for it. No “ifs” “ands” or “buts” got it?
(A)[giggles] But you love my sexy butt.
(K)[giggles] I do, I won't lie.
The women giggle together as they continue their search for Ashley's maid-of-honor dress. After browsing for a while longer, a particular gown catches Ashley's eye. She turns to Kate, excitement in her voice, and points to a stunning long red A-line dress with a square neckline and slit sleeves. Kate's jaw drops in astonishment as she takes in the dress's beauty.
(K)That’s beautiful, and it’s your color. Do you like it?
(A)I love it, it’s perfect for me.
(K)Alright, then let’s find some shoes to go with it and we should be ready.
(A)[smiles] Hell yeah, sounds good to me.
Ashley steps into the fitting room to try on her dress, and to her delight, it fits her perfectly. As the two women prepare to check out, Allison carefully places the dresses into protective boxes for Ashley and Kate to take home, along with the shoes they both selected. While they wait, Kate glances at the glass case filled with accessories and spots something that instantly captures her attention. It's a nature-inspired circlet adorned with faux twigs and leaves, featuring a delicate selenite crescent moon at its center. Captivated by its beauty, Kate turns to Allison, her face lighting up with excitement.
(K)Hey Allison, this circlet here in the case, could I possibly take a close look at it?
(AL)Of course dear, I’ll get it for you.
Allison carefully opens the case, reaches in, and gently removes the circlet. She extends it towards Kate, who eagerly accepts it. Kate cradles the delicate accessory in her hands, her eyes sparkling with delight as she examines its intricate details. A moment later, she looks up at Allison, her enthusiasm evident in her voice.
(K)This is gorgeous, and it would go perfectly with my dress. Whatever it costs, I’ll pay for it.
(AL)No need, it can be a part of the ensemble.
(K)No, Her Highness has been gracious enough to give me this dress and the shoes I wanted. The least I can do is give you my patronage in your wonderful shop, Allison.
(AL)[smiles] You’re too kind, Kate. You know I’ve heard of your altruism in this city and I admire that. At least let me give you a discount on it.
(K)I’ll pay full price for this along with Ashley’s dress and shoes. You’ve done enough for me as well, I insist.
(AL)[sigh] Very well, I’ll wrap it up nicely for you and put it in a nice box to keep it safe.
(K)Thank you, Allison, you've been wonderful, and it’s been a pleasure doing business with you.
(AL)The pleasure is all mine, Kate. Any friend of the queen’s is a friend of mine.
Kate and Allison exchange warm smiles as Kate passes the circlet to Allison, who carefully places it in a secure box for Kate's upcoming purchase. Meanwhile, Ashley and Kate wrap up their shopping and head out of the wedding shop, their hands filled with newly acquired treasures. They navigate through the bustling, brisk city streets, engaged in lively conversation as they stroll along.
(K)Oh, I was wondering if you’d do me the biggest favor in the world.
(A)Sure hon, whatever you need.
(K)Would you mind storing my dress at your place? I don’t want Merig to see it until our wedding day, and I trust you more than anyone to keep it safe for me, along with the accessories.
(A)I’d be happy to, the dress will be safe with me and I’ll protect it with my life.
(K)Phew, thank you so much, Ash. I’m sorry to ask you to take on such an enormous task.
(A)Don’t even sweat it, love. It’s my job as the maid of honor, remember?
(K)I don’t know what I’d do without you, Ash.
(A)And I don’t know what I’d do without you, hon. Well, the next place we need to go to is the flower shop to pick out flowers for your bouquet and some for decorations.
(K)That’s right, but I’m so tired from being at that boutique and we spent a few hours there. It’s also getting close to dinner, and I’m sure our goblins are hungry. We can always go to the florist tomorrow.
(A)You’re right, we’ll take your dress to my place and we’ll head to the training grounds to retrieve our goblins.
(K)[smiles] Sounds like a plan.
The women enjoy a leisurely stroll to Ashley's home to safely store Kate's wedding dress and accessories until the big day. Once their task is complete, they make their way to the training grounds in search of Merig and Larry. Upon arrival, the women find them and the other two goblins lounging at the rest area, engaged in conversation. The women approach the group and offer warm greetings.
(K)Hey fellas, having fun?
(M)Oh, hey sweetheart, we just finished up some of Barth’s training, so we’re just relaxing.
(K)Are you enjoying your training, Barth?
(B)Hell yeah, I get to throw my magic around at these assholes while they attempted to bring me down, but I’m too good for that to happen.
(L)Oh, please! I hit you with my training swords before you could even charge your magic, so I don’t wanna hear it, hotshot. I’ve always been faster than you and I know Gordo here gave you some bruises from kicking your ass.
(G)It’s true. I landed quite a few punches from behind while Larry was coming at you with his swords at the front.
(M)[chuckles] And you were trying so hard to dodge my training arrows when you weren’t using your fire spells to burn them. All the while trying to attack Larry and Gordo, but I’ll give you credit since you gave us a workout.
(B)Maybe at first, but I swept all three of you by the end of it. But hey, it’s only the first day, so cut me some slack.
(K)You guys be nice to Barth. He’s a powerful fighter and he’ll be one of the best Royal Guards and kick bandit ass.
(B)[smiles] Thank you, Kate, you’re always so supportive.
(K)[smiles] Of course, you’re my future brother-in-law, I have to be.
(B)That’s right, family sticks together. So how did your dress shopping go?
(K)[smiles] I found the perfect dress for myself and Ashley. The queen herself had my dress stored in a safe place and she was nice enough to have it ready as a gift for me at the boutique.
(M)Really? That was nice of her.
(K)It really was, I love it so much.
(M)I bet you’ll look absolutely beautiful in it, sweetheart.
(K)Oh, it’s such a stunning dress, I can’t wait to wear it for you all to see.
(G)Did you store it somewhere?
(K)Yep, Ash is nice enough to keep it at her place, so that’s where we went before we came here.
(A)Yep, I picked out a beautiful dress, too, and I love it.
(L)Oh, I can’t wait to see that. I bet you look ravishing in it, my fiery goddess.
(A)[smiles] Well, it is red after all.
(L)Oh don’t tease me, darling, I may not be able to contain myself.
(B)Easy tiger, maybe after the wedding.[chuckles]
(L)You hush I’m flirting with my woman, I have rights damnit.
(A)[giggles] It’s okay, my love, maybe I’ll come over and wear it for you, but that’s up to Kate since it’s for the wedding and she probably wouldn’t be happy if I wore it before then.
(K)Sorry, Larry, you’re gonna have to wait till after the wedding like Barth said.
(A)I’m so sorry my beloved, what the bride says, goes.
(L)[sigh] Fine, I guess I can wait. It’ll be worth it, though.
(B)Speaking of which, I noticed something.
(K)What’s up, Barth?
(B)Ashley is the maid of honor. Larry is the best man and I’m the groomsman. Shouldn’t there be at least one bridesmaid to make the wedding party equal?
(A)Actually yeah, he’s right. How did you know that, Barth?
(B)I’ve been doing some research into weddings and it was kind of interesting, so I did some reading.
(K)Well, I’m actually glad you brought it to my attention, Barth. You’re right, we don’t have equal people in the wedding party.
Kate's cheerful demeanor abruptly shifts as a frown replaces her smile. Her eyes narrow, focused on the ground, as a troubling realization dawns on her. Merig, noticing the sudden change in her expression, swiftly rises to his feet and approaches her. His gentle hand finds hers, while the other tenderly strokes her cheek. With a soothing tone, he begins to speak.
(M)Hey, sweetheart, it’s okay, don’t worry, we still have time to find a bridesmaid for the wedding.
(K)I know my love, but everyone that Ash and I know most likely still lives back home. So we’re going to have to think of something.
(M)We won’t worry about that right now, okay? You’ve been out for hours, so I’m sure you’re tired and cold. And we’ve been sparring with Barth for most of the day, so I’m definitely tired. I want to go home with you and to eat your amazing cooking and spend time with you while I warm you up.
(K)[smiles] Okay my love, you’re absolutely right.
Merig offers Kate a soft smile as he opens his arms invitingly. Kate removes her glasses before surrendering to the embrace. As Merig wraps his arms tightly around her, Kate takes a deep breath and returns the hug, burying her face in Merig's chest. After a moment, she pulls back, their eyes meeting. A shared smile blossoms between them before their lips meet in a tender kiss.
(M)It’ll be okay, sweetheart, I promise.
(B)Merig is right, Kate, we’ll find someone to be a bridesmaid, I’m sure of it.
(K)I hope so. If not, we’ll have to think of something.
(L)Well, you’ve made friends with other women in the city, maybe ask one of them. I’m sure they’d be delighted to be a part of the wedding since you’re so loved in Tara.
(K)[smiles] Yeah, maybe I can ask Sherry or even Charlotte.
(G)Hey Kate, I’m sorry to interrupt, but I was wondering if I could be in the wedding, too. It doesn’t have to be an important role. I just figured I’d do what I could to help you and I would love to be a part of your big day.
Merig pauses for a brief moment, a playful smirk creeping across his face as he casts a mischievous crimson-eyed glance at Gordo, whose face pales in terror, causing him to shrink back in his seat. Kate shoots Merig a disapproving glare, her expression stern and unyielding, while Merig sneaks a sideways look at her, stifling a chuckle. The other two goblins struggle to contain their laughter as Merig turns his attention back to Gordo, his voice dripping with madness and a playful devilish grin plastered on his face.
(M)What do you think, sweetheart? Do you think he’s earned it?
(G)Hey wait, I thought we were buddies again. Stop looking at me like that. It’s terrifying.
(K)Oh stop it, Merig, we talked about this. Of course, you can be a part of the wedding, Gordo.[gasp] You could be the ring bearer, the one that brings us our rings when Merig and I say our vows.
(G)Is that an important role?
(K)Actually, it is. After we put the rings on one another, then we are declared husband and wife by the officiant, the one who makes our marriage official.
(G)[smiles] Then I’ll do it if it helps.
(K)It’ll be a big help, Gordo. Also, what did you mean by you and Merig being buddies again? Did you two finally talk?
(M)[sigh] Yeah, we did, and you were right, sweetheart. It was time I forgave him, so I did. I was just kidding around with him, I promise.
(K)[smiles] That’s wonderful, my love. I'm so proud of you for taking that step and being the bigger person, and I’m glad you both talked about it and put it behind you. Now you can both move on and start fresh being friends again.
(M)You’re right, I do feel better letting that grudge go. I just don’t want to be that person and I don’t want that anger to consume me and turn me into a monster that you won’t love. I’d eventually lose you and that’s the last thing I want because if I lose you, then I can’t marry you like I want to and my life would be miserable without you.
(K)Oh honey, as much as I would hate your behavior, I could never bring myself to hate you no matter what. I would only hate what you did if you were that person, but I know you’re better than that and I put all my faith and trust in you to not be a horrible person because I know that’s not who you really are. You’re an amazing and wonderful person and I love you so much.
(M)I love you too, sweetheart, you’re wonderful and amazing too. I’ll do anything to keep you and never let you go.
(K)Good, 'cause I’m not going anywhere but in your arms for you to hold me.
(M)I’d be happy to, cause I’m not going anywhere either.
(K)Good, so let’s keep planning this wedding.
(L)Alright, so now that’s all out of the way, what’s next?
(K)We have to go to the florist, but Ash and I spent hours in the dress shop and decided we’re going to go tomorrow since it’s starting to get late and I have to cook dinner soon. We also have to start looking for a bridesmaid, so there’s that, too.
(A)We’ll do that hon, one step at a time, okay?
(K)I know, I just don’t want to ruin our wedding.
(M)Hey, you’re not going to ruin anything, sweetheart. You did one of the most important things today and you have your wedding dress as well as Ash’s maid of honor dress. Eirawen is taking care of the venues for us and our official documents, and she’s officiating the wedding. So don’t worry, just focus on the flowers, the cake, and the decorations. Small things, so you don’t overwhelm yourself.
Kate inhales deeply, then exhales slowly, taking a brief pause to compose herself. With their arms still wrapped around each other, Merig places his hand under Kate's chin, lifting her head to meet his gaze. A soft smile plays on his lips as he leans in to kiss her. Kate returns the smile, feeling a sense of calm wash over her as she begins to speak.
(K)[sigh] You’re absolutely right, my love. I’m stressing out way too much when everything is already going smoothly. Like Ash said, one thing at a time, so I don’t overwhelm myself. I want to have all the time to spend with you while we plan this.
(M)So for now, let’s go home. I’d like to spend some time with you, too.
(K)Okay, my love, I’m sorry and I’m sorry to the rest of you. I’m just so excited about this wedding. I don’t want anything to go wrong.
(A)Don’t be sorry, hon, we know how important this is for you and Merig. It’s important to us, too, and we’ll do anything we can to take the weight off of your shoulders.
(L)That’s right, you don’t need to bear all that weight alone. Just tell us how we can help, and we’ll be on it.
(B)Yep and you got your big brother-in-law Barth over here, other than my training, I’ll do whatever you need me to.
(G)I don’t mind helping either, just say the word and I’ll help carry some of that weight, too.
(M)And as your soon-to-be husband, it’s my job to make sure you don’t stress out. We both share the responsibilities of this wedding, so let me and the others help you. Don’t make yourself think you have to do everything, okay, sweetheart?
Kate looks up at Merig and smiles at him as her eyes turn red and begin to well up with tears. While they still hold each other, Merig takes one hand and gently touches Kate’s cheek, smiling at her as she holds back her tears. A single tear rolls down her face, and Merig wipes it away with his hand. Kate then closes her eyes and takes a deep breath before speaking.
(K)Thank you, my love, and thank you all for being here and offering your help and support. It means the world to me. You have no idea. Alright, I feel much better now. Tomorrow we can talk about what all we have to do to get ready for this wedding if that’s okay.
(B)Fine by me, we can meet up at the pub after I train in the morning. You said you’ll be going to the flower shop.
(M)That’s a good idea. That gives us time to be here for your training.
(L)And it gives you time to ask around to find a bridesmaid if you want.
(A)Yeah, we can do that. Let’s get out of here and get some rest.
(K)Okay, thank you for going dress shopping with me, Ash. I had so much fun.
(A)Oh, of course, I had a blast, too. I’ll be staying at Larry’s place, so I’ll come by in the morning and we can go to the flower shop together.
(K)Sounds good to me. I’ll see you in the morning, then.
(A)See you in the morning, hon.
The remaining three goblins rise from their spots in the resting area, preparing to head home for some well-deserved rest after their training session. With a cheerful grin, Larry strolls over to Ashley, who returns his smile warmly. He wraps his arms around her waist, leaning in for a kiss before playfully speaking in his flirtatious tone.
(L)Hey, sweet thing, I missed you all day. Let’s rendezvous at my place like we planned. If I can’t see you in that new dress just yet, maybe you can put something else on to look sexy.
(A)Or I can just wear nothing at all.
Ashley gazes at Larry with a mischievous glint in her eyes, causing Larry to be completely caught off guard. His face quickly transforms from surprise to a mix of shock and thrill, his eyes widening as he struggles to form coherent words. After a moment of sputtering, Ashley bursts into soft laughter before Larry is finally able to regain his composure and speak.
(L)W-Well, if you insist, I-I definitely won’t say no. And I don’t even have to sweet-talk you into it this time.
(A)[smiles] Oh, but I still want you to sweet-talk me, regardless.
(L)Oh, trust me, I plan on sweet-talking you among other things.
(A)[giggles] Good, now let’s go and you can sweet-talk me on the way there.
(L)As you wish, my beautiful red-hot flame.
Kate, Merig, and the rest of the group watch the unfolding scene, their laughter echoing through the air as Larry leans in for another kiss from Ashley. The couple breaks apart, their faces radiating happiness. Hand in hand, they turn to leave, waving goodbye to the group as they disappear from sight.
(L)Later Barth! See ya, Gordo! Goodnight Merig, I’ll see you all in the morning. Goodnight Kate, take it easy, okay? And Merig, you give your woman some extra love tonight. She’ll need it.
(M)I always do, buddy, Goodnight.
(A)Goodnight, Kate, I love you.
(K)I love you, too, Ash. Goodnight, you two.
(G)Goodnight, Kate, get plenty of rest, everything will work out, don’t worry.
(K)Goodnight, Gordo, thank you for the optimism and for being a part of our wedding.
(G)No problem, I’m happy to help.
The remaining goblins exchange final farewells before Ashley, Larry, and Gordo depart the training grounds. Kate and Merig share a tender smile and a kiss, their arms entwined. Barth watches the affectionate couple with a soft smile before approaching them. As he draws near, Kate and Merig turn their attention to him, eager to hear what he has to say.
(B)Hey, you two.
(K)Hey, Barth.
(M)Hey, it was fun sparring with you. I actually had fun.
(B)I had fun too. I may have some bumps and bruises, but I’ll be okay. I’ve got some healing powder at home that you gave me.
(K)Don’t push yourself too hard, Barth. I feel you should hold off on helping me train my magic for a while.
(B)Nonsense, Merig and I talked, and he said you can come here and train your magic with me while I train for the Royal Guards. It will be easier that way and benefit both of us if we’re in the same place, since you and I usually train in the forest.
(K)That sounds like a great idea. I’ll come here after I go to the florist tomorrow afternoon. Then we can all relax at the pub.
(B)Good idea, by the time you get here I should be done with my guard training for the day.
(K)That makes me feel so much better about that. Thanks for letting us train here, my love.
(M)Of course sweetheart, anything that helps you.
(B)Now you two go home and get warm and spend as much time together as possible. You both deserve it.
(K)We definitely will, and you go get some rest as well, Barth. I’m sure you're sore from training.
(B)I’ll be fine, I’ll be good as new in the morning, don’t worry. Goodnight, you two.
(K)Goodnight Barth.
(M)Goodnight, I’ll see you in the morning.
Kate disengages from Merig and steps towards Barth, arms outstretched in a welcoming gesture. Barth returns her smile with an equally warm one, reciprocating the hug. As they pull apart, Barth waves goodbye to both Kate and Merig before turning and walking towards the exit, disappearing from view. Kate and Merig exchange a glance, a silent understanding passing between them. Taking a deep breath, Kate offers Merig a radiant smile.
(K)Let’s go home, my love. I bet you’re hungry. I know I am.
(M)I’m always hungry for your cooking, sweetheart. Let’s go home.
Kate and Merig stroll away, their steps in harmony. With one hand, Kate secures Merig’s arm, while the other intertwines with his. Her head rests gently on his bicep as they navigate the familiar path. The training grounds fade behind them as they embark on a journey home, anticipating a delightful meal and the sweet embrace of relaxation before the night’s slumber.
