Redemption

The following morning, Gordo arrives with a horse and cart, while Barth makes his way on horseback to escort Kate’s parents back to Tailltean. They meet up with Kate, Merig, Joanna, and Thomas, as they gather outside the north city entrance for a heartfelt farewell. Warm embraces and promises of future reunions fill the air as they bid their loved ones goodbye.

(K)Goodbye Mom, bye Dad, I’m so glad you could come visit and spend time with us.

(J)We’re glad we could as well, honey. And it was wonderful finally getting to meet you, Merig.

(M)It was a great pleasure meeting both of you. I hope you come to visit again, even after the wedding.

(T)Oh, we will, don’t worry, and I’m hoping I’ll get to be a grandpa soon enough.[chuckles]

(M)[blush] Oh uh…

(K)[giggles] Oh stop it Dad, you’re embarrassing him.

(T)[laugh] Relax, Merig, I was only half joking.

(J)Hey, I wouldn’t mind a grandbaby, either. Although, my question is, will your children be human or goblin?

(K)Oh, I remember you told me I would give birth to goblins, right, honey?

(M)That's right, sweetheart. Male, in fact, since goblins are biologically male.

(T)Then we will love him just the same since he will still be our grandchild.

(J)That’s right, Tom, we will be such proud grandparents.

(K)I know you will. I’ll gladly be a mother to a tiny goblin.

(M)I’d be a proud father and funny enough, my mother was human.

(J)[gasp] Really? Then that makes a lot of sense about you and your brother’s personality.

(K)Yeah, I thought the same thing, and I wasn’t surprised when he first told me. I’m sure Barth will tell you the tale of him and Merig on the way back home.

(B)It’ll be a good story to pass the time, I’ll gladly tell it.

(K)Also, Mom, before I forget, we haven’t made a guest list yet. But we will need at least two hundred invitations, that’s just a rough estimation. If we have invitations left over, it should be fine. How many family members want to attend?

(J)Well, on your dad’s side, your aunts and uncles, as well as your grandparents from both sides. Sadly, your aunt Sharon from my side won’t be attending. She and I had a sort of falling out because she threatened to stop your wedding. She doesn’t like the fact that your husband will be a Fomor, and I told her she had no right to do that. You are an adult and you can do as you please, and your father and I have no issues with Merig, so we won’t let anyone ruin this wedding for you both. I warned her that if she even set foot in this city, I’d show her the way back out. Ever since she heard of you both getting married, she’s made it clear about her distaste for it. But I told her she doesn’t have to like it and she can just as easily stay out of your life and mine if that’s how she’s going to be. You’re my daughter and whether I approve of Merig is irrelevant, and I won’t stand for her behavior. She can kiss my ass as far as I’m concerned.

(K)[laugh] Go, Mom! Aunt Sharon has always been the worst, so I expected it from her. She never liked that we lived in a place with Fomors back home. There's a lot more I can say about her.

(M)Thank you, Joanna, that means a lot that you’d do that for our sake.

(J)Of course, Merig, I wouldn’t let her do that to you. Sharon lived among Fomors, but for some reason, she never liked them. She was influenced by people who think that Fomors are terrible and I didn’t agree with her. She’s my sister and I love her, but she will not sabotage your wedding if I have anything to say about it. Luckily, I didn’t tell her when it was going to take place, so she wouldn’t even know when to show up.

(M)if you want, I can always ban her from entering the city. Since I’m the commander of the guards, I have the power to do that. If she enters, she will be trespassed and escorted out of the city.

(J)Oh, that would be wonderful, Merig, that’ll teach her a thing or two.

(K)Yeah, but she can always show up between now and the wedding before you can do that, Merig.[sigh] I just hope she doesn’t cause problems for me.

(M)Don’t worry, sweetheart, I can always have guards at each entrance to make sure she doesn’t set foot in Tara. I have my ways of dealing with people who aren’t welcome here, remember?

(K)Of course, my love, I trust you to the fullest extent.

(T)It’s okay, Merig, that woman didn’t like me either when I married Joanna. She’s always been that way and there’s no reasoning with her. She’s just one of those people who thinks everyone should listen to her, but people tend to tell her to kick rocks and she hates it.

(M)Well, I’ll definitely tell her to kick rocks. I have no problem doing that at all.

(T)[chuckles] You’re going to be a great addition to the family, Merig, and we will be happy to have you.

(J)That’s right and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

(M)[smiles] Thank you, both. I'll be proud to be a part of the family, just as I will be proud to call your daughter my wife.

(J)Of course, you two can even come and visit us back in Taill if you want.

(K)We definitely will, but for now, you both should probably get going. Thank you, Barth and Gordo, for helping my parents get home safely.

(B)No problem at all, sis, bandits are still a thing and we wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt, that’s all.

(J)You’re both so kind in helping us get home.

(T)We’re very grateful to have you accompany us.

(G)Of course, you two are very important to us and Kate would probably kill us if anything happened to either of you.

(K)[giggles] Alright, we want hugs before you go.

(J)Oh absolutely, honey!

Joanna envelops Kate in a warm, loving embrace, the two sharing a tender moment as mother and daughter. As they pull away, they exchange a bright smile, and Joanna gently kisses Kate's forehead. She then turns to Merig, her face radiant with affection, and opens her arms to him. The two share a hearty hug, Merig returning the warmth with equal enthusiasm. Stepping back, Joanna gazes at the couple standing together, her eyes shining with happiness. She places her hands on each of their shoulders, her touch conveying love and blessing.

(J)I love you so much, baby girl, and you too, Merig. We will be back a week before the wedding to help you prepare everything.

(K)Okay, Mom, we love you, too. Go home and rest. We’ll see you back here soon.

(J)It’s been wonderful meeting you, Merig. You take good care of my baby, okay?

(M)Yes, ma’am, it was such a delight to meet you as well.

Joanna steps back, turns to face the cart, and walks towards it. She climbs aboard and takes a seat, preparing for departure. Thomas then steps forward, his eyes warm with affection, and approaches Kate. He leans down, enveloping her in a tender hug, which Kate returns with equal love. As they pull away, Thomas smiles softly down at his daughter, his face radiating paternal devotion. Kate smiles back up at him, her eyes shining with happiness, as Thomas speaks in a gentle, loving, and fatherly tone.

(T)I love you, pumpkin, it was so good seeing you and we can’t wait for the wedding.

(K)I love you too, Dad. We can’t wait either, go home and rest, take care of Mom.

(T)Of course, as always, honey.

Thomas gently places a kiss on Kate's forehead before stepping away from her. He turns to Merig, and the two share a warm smile. Thomas then opens his arms, inviting Merig into a hearty hug. Merig's eyes widen in surprise for a moment before he happily returns the embrace, feeling a sense of acceptance and love from his future father-in-law. As they pull away from the hug, Thomas's gaze drops to Merig's hand. His eyes light up with delight as he sees the ring he had given him, now worn as a symbol of Merig's love and commitment to Kate.

(T)You’re wearing the ring today.

(M)Yes sir, I really do love it and it will be a wonderful symbol of my love for your daughter.

(T)Good, thank you for taking care of Kate. It means a lot to her and to us that you protect her and love her like you do.

(M)Of course, I love her very much and she’s very important to me. She’s a treasure that I feel obligated to guard with my life and I intend to do just that till the day I die.

(T)[smiles] That’s right, and she’s our treasure that we happily trust you with and put in your hands.

(M)Then I’ll gladly cherish her forever, sir.

(T)We know you will, son-in-law.

Thomas places a hand on Merig's shoulder, and Merig reciprocates the gesture, smiling in response to Thomas' words. With a final nod, Thomas steps away from the couple and turns to walk towards the cart. He climbs aboard, taking a seat beside Joanna, who welcomes him with a gentle smile. Kate and Merig step forward, approaching the cart as Kate turns to Gordo, speaking to him with a hint of gratitude. Her eyes meet Gordo's, and she expresses her thanks, her voice filled with sincerity.

(K)You know how to get to Taill, right, Gordo?

(G)Yep, I am very familiar with this path. We used to always go there when we were back at the camp.

(K)Good, thank you both again and please be careful.

(B)No problem, it’s our pleasure, sis. Your parents will be safe with us.

(K)Alright, I love you, Mom, and Dad.

(J)We love you, too, honey, we’ll see you soon.

(T)Bye, pumpkin.

(K)Bye, you two.

(J)Goodbye, for now, Merig.

(M)Goodbye to you both and safe travels.

With final farewells spoken, Gordo and Barth urge their horses forward, beginning their journey to Tailltean. Merig and Kate share a tender smile, wrapping one arm around each other as they wave goodbye. They watch as the cart and horse disappear into the winter forest, the snow-covered trees swallowing them from view. Hand in hand, Merig and Kate stroll back into the city, making their way to the cozy pub. Inside, they meet up with Ashley and Sarah, settling in beside them as they spend time talking. The warmth of the pub, a welcome respite from the chilly winter air.

(K)Well, my parents are on their way back home and they’ll be back a week before our wedding.

(A)I’m really glad they came to visit. It was really a joy to have them here.

(S)I agree, your mom is still the same energetic woman she was when we were kids.

(K)Yeah, she’s always a delight to have around. I love her.

(M)I really like her, she was very kind to me and so was your dad. They didn’t judge me once for being a Fomor, or Kate and I’s relationship.

(A)That’s Jo and Tom for you. Jo especially, has always been an open-minded person, and I even looked at her like a second mom.

(S)Yeah, my mom passed away when I was a child. I was grateful when Jo opened her home to me when Kate and I met as teens. She’s always been the motherly type of person and she was like a mother to me as well. You could always feel the joy in the atmosphere when she was around and you could feel her love through her hugs.

(M)[smiles] Oh I definitely felt the love when she hugged me. It was a…familiar feeling.

(K)[smiles] Yeah I know, I get my personality from my mother. I guess you can say I learned from her.

(M)Like mother, like daughter.

(A)You got that right.

(S)So how are you feeling since yesterday, Kate?

(K)Actually, I’m feeling a lot better since I talked to Cormac. It really took a lot of weight off of me that I didn’t know I was still carrying. I actually feel happier and I didn’t have a nightmare last night. Probably because Merig was holding me while I slept, but I still felt better.

(A)That’s good. I myself am trying to get used to Cormac being around since I don’t particularly like him. But I won’t dwell on it since you aren’t going to, Kate. You’ve always been a forgiving person and if he’s serious about doing better things with his life, then I don’t see why he can’t be around.

(S)Yeah, he does seem like a nice person.

(M)He honestly is a nice person once you get to know him. He was a good friend to me back when I was in the bandit camp. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss him and it’ll take some getting used to with him in the group again.

(K)The resentment a few of us may have, shouldn’t poison our view of him. You never know, he may have some really good qualities about him, as Merig says.

(A)You’re right, I’ll keep an open mind.

(S)Me too, it doesn’t hurt to give him a chance. From what Ash and I saw yesterday, he was really serious about earning your forgiveness.

(K)I noticed that, too, and I told Merig that I sensed the good in him. I’ve always been able to see the good in people.

(A)Yeah, you have, even with me. I know I was a little abrasive and cynical as a teenager, but that never stopped you from caring about me when others didn’t. You were my only friend before Sarah met us and you never gave up on me, even though I had my teenage issues.

(K)Of course, we’ve known each other since we were toddlers. Did you honestly think I was going to end our friendship just because of teen hormones? I went through it, too, remember?

(A)Yeah, but you were still the sweet person you’ve always been. I was dealing with my parents, not allowing me to practice alchemy. Like I’ve said in the past, you were my biggest supporter and you were there for me when I was upset. After I turned seventeen, my parents finally caved and let me practice and you cheered me on the whole time.

(K)Because it was something you always wanted to do, and I was excited that you were able to do it. We practiced our skills together and spent a lot of time with each other and I loved it.

(A)Me, too, we had so much fun and I’ll never forget it. We started a new life here and now my best friend is going to get married. Our life is perfect here in Tara and I don’t regret anything.

(K)You’re absolutely right, and I don’t regret a damn thing, either.

(S)I don’t regret moving here and finding you both. At first, I was regretting it since I usually have a hard time meeting people. But that changed when I saw you both that day at the square.

(K)We’re glad we found you too, Sarah, and we’re glad you don’t regret it, either. All three of us are back together and I couldn’t be happier.

(S)[smiles] Absolutely, and I get to be a part of the wedding and I'm so excited.

(K)I am, too, our wedding will be perfect, won’t it, my love?

(M)Of course, it will. As long as you’re happy with it, I’m happy.

(K)I want you to be happy with it, too, Merig. It’s not just my wedding, remember?

(M)Sweetheart, as long as I’m getting married to you, nothing else matters to me. It will be perfect as long as I can say my vows to you. Put that ring on your finger and say “I do”.

(K)[smiles] Those are my thoughts, exactly, my love.

Merig and Kate's eyes lock, their smiles mirroring each other's affection. Merig tenderly takes Kate's hand, cradling it between both of his, his touch warm and gentle. He leans in, and they share a soft, sweet kiss. As they pull away, they turn back to the group, hands still clasped, and continue their conversation. Moments later, the pub door swings open as Larry and Cormac enter. The two goblins make their way to the table, joining the lively gathering. Larry, beaming with his signature cheer, greets the group with a hearty smile.

(L)Good morning, everyone.

(K)Good morning, you two.

(C)Good morning.

(K)Have a seat, join us.

Cormac gladly accepts and slides into the empty seat at one end of the table. Kate and Sarah sit on each side of the table near to Cormac, a contented expression on his face. Merig is settled in the seat on the other side of Kate, while Sarah remains across from them between Ashley and Cormac. Larry circumnavigates the table to take the empty seat on the other side of Ashley. His hand finds her cheek, gently cupping it as his other hand lifts her chin. With a tender smile, he leans in and kisses her softly, his arm then wraps around her comfortably.

(L)Good morning, beautiful. I enjoyed our little rendezvous last night. It was a shame that you had to leave me so early this morning.

(A)I'm really sorry, sweetheart, I wanted to say goodbye to Kate's parents before they left to go back home.

(L)Don't be sorry, gorgeous, we can always make up for lost time and you can come by again tonight, how bout that?

(A)We'll see, lover boy, only if you're good.

(L)Oh you know I'm good for it, my red-hot flame, I'm always good.

Larry's fingers continue to gently caress Ashley's cheeks, his eyes soft and adoring as they share a tender smile. He then takes her hand, his touch gentle, and raises it to his lips. He presses a kiss to the back of her hand, his lips lingering on her skin. Ashley's face flushes with a sweet blush, and she tries to stifle a giggle. She rolls her eyes as she shakes her head at Larry's romantic gesture. The rest of the group erupts into quiet laughter and giggles at the charming scene. Amidst the merriment, Cormac speaks up.

(C)Wow, Larry, that was smooth.

(L)Hey, I'm flirting with my woman over here, you leave me to it! You signed up for this, and watching me flirt with this beautiful goddess is one thing that comes with it, so you gotta suck it up, buttercup!

(K)[giggles] Don't worry, Cormac, it's practically our entertainment for the day. You'll learn to get used to it.

(C)[chuckles] Trust me, I got used to Larry a long time ago. I always enjoyed him being around, especially when I was depressed.

(L)That’s right, gotta turn that frown upside down. I had Kate laughing when Merig and I first met her.

(K)[smiles] I’ll always remember that.

(A)I remember he made me laugh not long after we first met.

(L)Admit it, I stole your heart, didn’t I?

(A)I’d be lying if I said “no”, especially when you flirted with me. It always made me laugh, especially when I had my heart broken. All I had to do was come here and hang out and you’d know just how to cheer me up.

(L)That’s my job, but hey it was worth it for me since you’re mine now, my fiery goddess.

(A)[smiles] It was worth it for me, too, honey, I love you.

(L)[smiles] I love you, too, gorgeous.

(C)So Kate, were you able to say goodbye to your parents?

(K)Yeah, they're on their way home now. Barth and Gordo are escorting them back safely.

(C)Good, I hope they get there unharmed. The bandits that stayed behind took over the camp. I just hope they haven't caused trouble for people since I left.

(M)Yeah, let's hope, I'm sure her parents will be fine since Barth and Gordo are with them. I've trained Gordo to fight bandits and Barth is a strong mage.

(K)They're in excellent hands, I trust them.

(C) By the way, when exactly do you want to start training me, Merig?

(M)I guess we can start tomorrow since Barth and Gordo aren't here. So it would just be Larry and me training you if we started today. We want you to spar with all of us if possible.

(L)Yeah, it's better if we have everyone sparring. It'll give you more of a challenge.

(M)Especially since each of us wields different weapons. Also, since you're an archer like me, you can use the targets we have, the ones you saw Kate and Barth using yesterday. I can train you to master your skills, as well.

(C)Okay, so today is just a rest day, huh?

(L)Pretty much.

(C)Well then, what's left to do for the wedding?

(K)Well, my mom is making the Invitations. Merig and I have to write our vows. I still need to buy Sarah her bridesmaid dress. I was also thinking of possibly getting some photography done, or maybe paintings. Pretty much just small things. We have everything else taken care of.

(C)Anything I can do to help?

(K)if you want, you can help set up the day of the wedding. We filled you in on most of what we're doing, so maybe you can help the guys set up the seating and decorations at the ceremony, as well as the reception.

(C)Yeah definitely, I'll do whatever you need me to.

(K)I also need to make sure who here in Tara wants to attend the wedding.

(M)We can always start by listing the people you've already talked to about inviting.

(K)That's true, but it's not a lot of people. We could make it an open wedding, where anyone can attend. But we wouldn't want just anyone to be there, like Jeff, for example.

(M)True, if he decides to show up, I won't hesitate to kick his ass.

(C)Who's Jeff?

(K)He's someone who used to frequent this pub. Last year, Merig nearly killed him when he got drunk and was flirting with me. He got aggressive when I didn't want anything to do with him, so decided he was going to raise his hand to me and slap me in the face because I pushed him off of me. He had me in his grimy hands and wouldn’t let go and he hit me so hard, it cut my lip open.

(L)Yeah, Merig went into a blind rage within seconds of seeing Jeff slap her. He almost beat the life out of him. It was great to watch. But I had to pull Merig off of him or he was going to tear Jeff apart.

(A)Jeff loved getting drunk and causing trouble here at the pub. He's permanently banned because of what he did to Kate and we haven't seen him since.

(C)Damn, he sounds like a piece of shit.

(M)He is, he's one of those humans that think Fomors are scum and he didn't like that Kate and I are together. He said she was better off being with another human, rather than with a filthy goblin. After I gave him a good beating, Larry and I took him outside and tossed him on his drunk ass. After we threatened him, he stumbled off and went home with a bloody face.

(C)Yeah, screw him. I don't blame you for kicking his ass.

(K)It was the first time I saw Merig get really aggressive towards someone who hurt me. That was also the night he and I made love for the first time.[smiles]

(M)[smiles] That’s right, I’ll never forget it.

(C)One of these days I’ll have to listen to your love story. It should be fun, minus the bad parts of it.

(K)Luckily, there’s more good than bad. We’d be happy to indulge you in the tale of how a human and a goblin fell in love.

(M)Definitely, it’s a great story, the best part of my life.

(K)It's the best part of my life, too, my love.

As they bask in the warmth of fond memories, Merig and Kate share a loving smile. Kate leans in, her lips meeting Merig's in a gentle kiss, before she snuggles into the comfort of his shoulder, her head resting there. Meanwhile, Barth and Gordo have made good progress on their journey to Tailltean in the snowy forest. Barth keeps a watchful eye out for any signs of bandits, ever vigilant, while Gordo expertly guides the cart and horse from the coach seat. Inside the cart, Joanna leans affectionately on Thomas for warmth, her hand clasped around his arm. Barth turns his attention to them and initiates a conversation.

(B)Hey, how are you both doing over here?

(J)We’re doing great, Barth, it’s so peaceful out here. The snow makes it look so beautiful, it almost makes you want to lie in it if it wasn’t so cold.

(T)I agree, it’s very calm out here and relaxing.

(B)It really is, you aren’t too cold, are you?

(J)A little, dear, but Tom and I are sitting close to each other, so I’m pretty warm.

(B)We brought a wool blanket just in case.

(J)Oh, you’re too kind, Barth, we’ll use it if you don’t mind.

(B)Not at all, that’s exactly what we brought it for.

Barth reaches behind him, into a bag strapped to his horse's saddle. He pulls out a large, folded wool blanket and hands it to Thomas. With a grateful smile, Thomas unfolds the blanket and drapes it over himself and Joanna, who snuggle closer together for warmth. As the blanket settles around them, Thomas turns to Barth, a look of appreciation in his eyes.

(T)Thank you so much, Barth.

(B)No problem at all, gotta keep you two warm.

(J)Aren't you and Gordo cold at all? I noticed you're just wearing cloaks over your light armor. It doesn't look very warm under there.

(B)We're perfectly fine, our bodies differ from humans. We emit more heat that keeps us warm, so we can withstand the cold.

(J)Oh, that's right, our goblin friends back home told us that. They were very pleasant to us and Kate was always fascinated by goblins.

(B)It all makes sense now since she'll be married to one. It’s really exciting that we’ll be a family soon.

(J)It’s very exciting. You and your brother are such sweethearts. Kate is very excited to have a brother-in-law since she doesn’t have any siblings of her own. She and Ash are like sisters, but you’ll be her brother by marriage.

(B)[chuckles] I’m very excited to have her as a sister-in-law, as well. Growing up, Merig and I only had each other to look after. Sure, we argued like siblings, but we also protected each other. I’m not proud that I was a bandit, but Merig and I never engaged in any bandit activities. It was a wonder how we were still welcomed there. It’s a long story with the two of us, so I won’t bore you during this trip.

(J)Oh, you won’t bore us one bit. How much more boring can it get just sitting here in silence, Barth? Besides, you were going to tell us your story on the way to Taill, remember?

(T)I wouldn’t mind hearing your story, either. I’m curious as to how you both ended up with bandits when you two are very kind and peaceful.

(B)Weird, right? Well, sadly, we had nowhere else to go since Merig and I were separated from our family back home.

(J)I’m still surprised by the fact that your mother was human. So does that mean you and Merig are part human?

(B)That’s right, it makes sense now, doesn’t it? We’re goblins by appearance, and we act very much like goblins. But we have human blood running through our veins.

(T)That makes perfect sense since you both know so much about humans and live among them with no issues.

(B)We don’t know everything there is to know about humans, but yes, we’ve lived among them since we were born. Sadly, we’ve had our fair share of humans who hate us, but they didn’t know we were part human since it’s not exactly obvious on the outside.

(T)I had no idea until you said something and frankly, I’m not too surprised now that I think about it. Kate said she wasn’t surprised at all when you told her all about it.

(B)Oh yeah, Merig and I told her everything. She was a little shocked, but it made sense to her as well, once she really thought about it. I told her a long time ago that we were raised by humans, but I never went into full detail.

(J)Also, I'm sure you heard us talking to Kate and Merig about children. Merig told us that Kate would give birth to goblins.

(B)That’s right, we told Kate if she ever had children by Merig, her offspring would be goblin but also have human blood just like us.

(T)We would definitely love to have grandchildren one day. If it doesn’t happen, then it’s no big deal.

(J)And as I told Kate, we would still love him since he would be our blood.

(T)Exactly, we won’t love him any less than if he were a human child.

(B)You’re both wonderful people. I expected nothing less from my future in-laws. I’ll be a proud uncle myself if Kate and Merig ever have children.

(J)Oh, I’m going to love being a grandmother to a little goblin, he’ll be spoiled rotten by us.

(T)He will be very much loved and I’ll be a proud grandfather.

(B)Children are a joy in this world and having a tiny goblin running around causing chaos would be a sight to see.

(J)[giggles] But it will be so cute, my heart will melt.

(B)Oh it will absolutely be adorable. I can’t wait to have a nephew if Kate and Merig ever decide to start a family.

(T)So tell us your story, Barth.

(B)[chuckles] Alright, well, long story short, we were separated from our parents a long time ago when Merig and I were just kids. We weren’t exactly welcome in our city when our parents fell in love, got married and my mother had me. As soon as I was born, there were some humans that didn’t like our family and the ones that accepted us tried to protect us, but the angry mob overpowered them. My parents were forced to leave and live in a remote area, where my father built a house for us to live in. I was about five years old when Merig was born and he was named after my father. Everything was great and life was peaceful with us and the humans that knew us and accepted us helped us start our new life and they even left the city to live near us. We pretty much became a small village and grew our own food, had livestock, and basically lived on a small farm. We loved it. Merig and I had so much fun, even though he was younger than me. I had to protect him from any danger at all costs. He was a good kid and I, being the oldest, was able to guide him. But that happiness wouldn’t last long, and when I was ten and Merig was only five, something terrible happened at our farm. A group of humans from the same city we lived in, came to our house one day while my mother was out in the field tending to the crops. They were there to start trouble and my mother called for my father and when he came outside, the people weren’t happy to see that he and my mother were still married and had Merig and me. They didn’t like the fact that Merig and I were part human and said we were abominations to this world, so they and the other villagers got into a huge fight and some even had weapons. My father protected us from them, but there were so many, it was chaos. My father told me to take Merig and leave to find a safe place so we didn’t get hurt, and that’s exactly what I did. I ran with Merig on my back, and I didn’t stop until nightfall. It was dark, and we were in the forest with no shelter or food and we couldn’t go back to the village. Luckily, we could fend for ourselves for a while since we knew how. We were eventually found by someone who lived in the forest. It was a woman and her husband who grew their own food as well and had their own livestock, just like us. I told them our story, and they took us in and cared for us.

(J)Did you ever go back to your village?

(B)Yeah, the couple took us there a few weeks after it happened, but…no one was there. The village was abandoned and we couldn’t find our parents. So the couple raised us as their own and since then, we haven’t seen or heard from our parents.

(J)Oh, you poor things, that’s terrible.

(T)I’m so sorry that happened to you both. You were so young.

(B)Don’t be. The people who raised us were wonderful, and we eventually moved out to go live on our own. But as luck would have it, there were places where we weren’t welcome and we had a hard time finding somewhere to go. We ran into the bandits one day and they heard our story, so they welcomed us into the camp. Merig and I didn’t exactly want to be bandits, but where else could we go? We told them we didn’t want any part of it since humans had been so good to us, despite the bad ones. Luckily they understood that we just needed a place to go, so the boss of the camp at the time let us stay. There we met Gordo, Larry, and Cormac, whom we became good friends with. We all looked out for each other, but some bandits in the camp weren’t so nice. I’m sure Kate told you the rest of the story.

(J)Yeah, she did, and she told us you’re all willing to make amends with Cormac, is that right?

(B)Yeah, he’s bettered himself in Tara and yesterday, he begged for our forgiveness for what he did. But we told him he’d have to earn it, which he and everyone else thought was fair.

(T)That’s good, as long as he doesn’t cause any more trouble, and atone for what he's done.

(J)We try to be compassionate people and we see the good in others. We taught Kate to be the same way and if she sees the good in him, then it must be there if he’s changed.

(B)He assured us that he’s changed and gave up a life of banditry. He told us the truth behind his actions.

(J)Kate told us that, as well. I do feel bad for him, but he does need to redeem himself and when he does, we’ll forgive him, too.

(T)My thoughts, exactly.

(B)I completely agree.

As the conversation continues, Gordo's ears suddenly perk up, his attention caught by faint noises in the snow-covered trees. He scans their surroundings but sees nothing out of the ordinary. Barth's ears also twitch, and he joins Gordo in searching for the source of the sound. Their expressions turn cautious, their senses heightened, as they hear the unmistakable snapping of twigs and rustling of bushes. The forest, once serene, now seems to vibrate with an air of unease. Gordo's voice breaks the tension, his words low and measured, as he speaks up.

(G)I think we’re about to have some trouble, Barth.

(B)It could just be animals, but keep your eyes open.

(G)It would’ve been nice if Larry or even Cormac joined us.

(B)I agree, but we volunteered, so Kate's parents are in our hands. We’ll protect them no matter what.

(G)Of course, we will.

(B)We won’t let anything happen to you two.

(J)You’re both so brave.

(T)I can help you fight if I have to.

(B)Just be careful, sir, I couldn’t live with myself if either of you got hurt.

(T)I’m a master mage just like you, Barth. We’ll be fine.

Gordo and Barth remain vigilant, their senses heightened as the rustling in the trees and bushes intensifies. Suddenly, a group of bandits emerge from the snowy thicket, their figures outlined against the white expanse. Weapons drawn, they encircle the horse and cart. Gordo commands the horses, bringing the cart to a halt, while Barth spurs his mount forward to confront the threat. As he halts his horse in front of the bandits, Barth puts on his magic-amplifying gloves, the air crackling with anticipation. Inside the cart, Thomas rises to his feet, a determined glint in his eye. He begins to channel a fiery spell, ready to defend Joanna. Dismounting his horse, Barth advances towards the bandits, his face a mask of anger. His voice, low and stern, cuts through the tense silence.

(B)Lower your weapons and back off! I will not hesitate to zap every one of you!

(BA1)It’s good to see you again, Barth!

(B)What do you want?

(BA1)It's been boring since Cormac left. We saw you and Gordo out here with your precious cargo.

(B)They haven’t done anything to you, so leave them alone, and let us pass!

(BA1)These two are that human's parents, aren't they?

(BA2)We heard Merig is getting married to her and we don’t exactly want that to happen.

(B)You’ll have to kill me first if you want to stop their wedding! You hurt Kate's parents and I'll kill every last one of you damn bandits!

(J)Oh dear, this isn’t good.

(T)Alright, you bastards! I guess if you want a fight, then you'll get one!

(B)Gordo, go back and get Merig and the others. You should get there quickly on my horse. We'll try to hold these bandits off until you get back.

(G)Right, I shouldn’t be long.

Gordo springs to his feet, leaps off the cart, and sprints towards Barth's horse. He mounts it in one swift motion and turns the horse around, galloping furiously in the opposite direction, racing against time to warn the others back in Tara. Meanwhile, the bandits charge at Barth with a fierce battle cry, but he stands firm, unleashing a barrage of lightning spells. The battle rages on. Back at the pub, the group remains huddled around the table, oblivious to the danger unfolding out in the forest, their conversation flowing effortlessly.

(K)Mom and Dad talked about grandkids before they left.

(A)Oh yeah? I'd expect them to. They’re getting old and you're about to get married.

(K)Yeah, Mom was curious whether I'd have human or goblin children. We told them I'd be giving birth to goblins if I ever got pregnant.

(A)[giggles] Oh that's right! We would have little Merig clones running around here. How cute would that be?

(K)[giggles] I know, right? He would wreak havoc in Tara.

(L)I dunno about that being a good thing. One Merig is enough. A smaller one would mean utter catastrophe.

(M)Thanks, buddy, but hey you'd be an uncle. You may not be blood, but I'm sure that's what he'll call you.

(L)Don’t pull at my heartstrings, Merig. I’ll be a proud uncle, along with Barth.

(C)I think you both would be great parents.

(K)Oh, Merig would be a wonderful father. But that’s something to think about for the future, right my love?

(M)Of course, sweetheart, let’s focus on this wedding for now and see what the future brings after that.

(K)Speaking of which, Mom also mentioned my Aunt Sharon wasn't invited to the wedding.

(A)Oh, that woman! Good, I never liked her. I'm glad she isn't coming. What's her problem this time?

(K)Well, as you know, she's never liked Fomors. She threatened to crash our wedding.

(A)Like help she will. I dare that witch to come to Tara. I'll kick her ass and she knows it.

(C)I'm guessing your aunt isn't a pleasant person?

(K)You guessed right, she's a horrible woman and thinks she's better than everyone. She's the complete opposite of my mother. She doesn't like my dad or any of the other Blackmores and she always tried telling my mom how to raise me, so I didn't end up like my dad. Taill is my dad's hometown and my mom is from Tir Chonaill. My mom moved to Taill when she and Dad got married and my aunt didn't like that. We also lived among Fomors, which she's someone who hates them and didn't like that we associated with them. According to Mom, she went crazy after she found out Merig and I were getting married and told my mom to stop me from marrying a Fomor. But my mom told her where to shove it.

(A)I love your mom to death. She's sweet as honey, but she takes no shit from people like your aunt.

(C)It's great that your mom is supporting you. That's what parents should be there for, rather than dictate what their children do when they're adults. Your aunt is horrible if she tries to stop your wedding.

(S)I met her a few times, and she didn't like me, either. She always commented on my appearance and it made me feel insecure. I did my best to avoid her after the first time I met her. She told me I wasn't pretty because I didn't wear makeup.

(K)I remember that, I told her to mind her own business and that it wasn't true. You're beautiful without it, Sarah.

(C)She's right, it may not matter coming from me, but I think you're very pretty, Sarah.

(S)[smiles] Thank you, Cormac, that actually means a lot.

(A)Sharon was just jealous of you, 'cause you're gorgeous and she's not, Sarah. Also, don't feel too bad. She thought I was a bad influence on Kate, even though I've never done anything horrible in my life. She just assumed because I didn't take her shit attitude, that I was a troublemaker. I was someone who didn't let her use me as a doormat and I'd talk back to her and she didn't like that. Jo never had a problem with me putting her in her place when she was around and would even do the same.

(L)She sounds like an insufferable bitch. Let her come here and cause trouble and watch me put her in her place, too.

(M)Don’t worry, I already told Kate and her parents that we'd have guards at the entrance between now and after the wedding. She'll immediately be trespassed if she comes here.

(L)Good thinking, pal, I'll be damned if we have any objections to this wedding.

(M)It's fine, humans hating Fomors doesn't bother me like it used to. I remember when I was told as a child by humans that Barth and I were freaks of nature and shouldn't exist because we were born from a human.

(S)That’s fascinating, so you’re part human?

(M)By blood, yes, but in appearance and behavior, Barth and I are most definitely goblins.

(K)I remember the story you and Barth told me about you two.

(A)Yeah, I'd always joked about you practically being human, but I never expected that.

(M)I’ll tell you the story sometime, Sarah.

(S)I'd love to hear it, but I’m so sorry those humans said that to you, Merig. That’s terrible, and they should be ashamed. You and Barth were just innocent children hearing that.

(M)Yeah, but that didn’t change my view of humans, although it did give me some self-esteem issues later on. That’s kind of why I was so afraid to tell Kate how I felt about her. Hearing at a young age that I was an abomination, made me question my life as I got older. I may have been young, but I understood what they said to us.

Kate turns to Merig, her smile lighting up her face as she gently cups his cheek opposite of her in her hand. Her touch is soft and tender as she gently turns his head. Their eyes meet in a captivating gaze. As she caresses his cheek, a shiver runs down Merig's spine. Leaning in, she brushes her lips against his in a soft and sweet kiss. Her voice, soft as a whisper, fills the air with words of affection that envelop Merig's heart.

(K)Hey, you are not a freak of nature. You deserve life just as much as the rest of us. Don’t let the words of those humans haunt you, my love. You are about to be my husband and I dare anyone to try to hurt you or take you away from me, or even try to stop our wedding.

(M)I know, sweetheart, it doesn’t bother me any more thanks to you being in my life.

(K)Good, because we wouldn’t be here if you never existed. I love you so much.

(M)I love you, too.

Kate tilts closer, their lips meeting in another soft, lingering kiss. But the moment is shattered when Gordo crashes through the pub doors, hurrying toward their table. The atmosphere shifts instantly, concern etched on everyone’s faces as they turn to Gordo, confusion swirling in their eyes. Kate and Merig spring to their feet, ready to confront whatever news Gordo brings.

(K)Gordo? What are you doing back here?

(G)We have to hurry. Your parents are in danger. We ran into bandits. Barth is holding them off!

(K)Merig, we have to go help them.

(M)Right, let's go get the horses ready.

(L)Damnit! Alright, let’s go kick some bandit ass.

(A)I thought we were through dealing with these assholes. They've got some nerve.

(S)I can come with you and heal you all if you need it.

(C)I’ll come with you, too. I’ll help you fight them.

(K)Thank you, Cormac.

(M)Consider this your first day of training. Don’t disappoint me, Cormac.

(C)Of course not.

(L)Alright, let’s get out of here!

The group sprints out of the pub, racing towards the stables at the training grounds. They hastily mount their horses and gallop through the chilly city streets, the sound of pounding hooves echoing off the buildings. As they approach the north entrance, they plunge into the snow-covered forest, the trees blurring together in a white, green, and brown haze. Meanwhile, Barth stands his ground against the bandits, hurling his magic a them as best as he can. With a swift motion, his hands at his side, he charges his powerful fire spell between his hands, the air crackling with energy. He sees the flash of light and throws his hands forward. As the spell erupts, a blaze of fire engulfs the bandits, sending them flying onto the snowy ground. Thomas unleashes his firebolt spells, striking down bandits as they close in on the cart. Joanna cowers behind him, her eyes wide with fear. Barth continues to cast his spells, but a bandit breaks through his defenses, a sword flashing in the light. Barth isn't quick enough to block the attack, and the bandit's sword slices through his right arm, sending him crashing to the ground with a cry of pain. Clutching his injured arm, Barth struggles to stem the bleeding. Thomas spins around, his eyes locking onto Barth's fallen form.

(T)Barth! I'm coming to help you!

(B)No! If you do that, you can't protect Jo and she'll be in danger! I'll be fine, it's just a scratch!

(T)I'll at least stop them from doing any more damage to you. When I attack them, get away and run over her so you can take cover!

(B)Alright! I'm ready when you are!

(T)Jo, stay close to me.

(J)Okay, honey, just be careful.

(T)We'll be fine, honey, I won't let you get hurt. I just have to keep those bandits away from Barth.

Thomas channels a storm within his hands, unleashing bolts of lightning at the bandits. He batters them back, a fiery wall of defiance against their assault on Barth. One by one, the bandits crumple, their bodies convulsing with each electric strike. Others scatter, their eyes wide with terror. Seizing the moment, Barth lunges free, his movements a blur of adrenaline. He takes cover next to the cart, sitting on the snow. His breath is ragged as he assesses the gash on his bicep. Meanwhile, Thomas continues his blistering assault, each lightning strike a testament to his fury.

(T)Keep away from my son-in-law, you filthy bandits!

(B)Thank you, sir! You saved my life!

(T)Of course, I couldn’t let my son-in-law get killed.

(J)Do you need my help, Barth? I feel useless.

(B)No, Jo, if you come down here, then you risk getting hurt and I can’t have that on my conscience.

(J)Please hurry, Kate.

Barth pauses, his mind racing, and suddenly his eyes light up. He digs through his pockets, finally retrieving a cloth bandage that Sarah had given him for just such emergencies. With a swift motion, he scoops up some fresh snow from the ground, applying it to his arm as he scrubs at the bloodied wound. A grin spreads across his face as he takes the bandage and starts to wrap it snugly around his arm, murmuring softly to himself.

(B)Sarah, you're a lifesaver, I ought to hug you when I see you next.

(T)How bad is it, Barth?!

(B)Just a scratch, sir! Luckily, I had some first aid on me!

(T)Good, just stay low until the others get here! I'll hold them off!

(B)My apologies to you both. I’m the one that’s supposed to be protecting you. I didn’t intend on getting hurt, and now you’re the ones protecting me.

(T)No need for apologies, Barth, family protects each other, remember?

(B)I guess you’re right, sir.

(T)Enough with the formalities, Barth, call me Tom, or Dad if you prefer.

(B)Understood, Tom.

(J)You have nothing to be sorry for, Barth. You just focus on yourself so you don’t get hurt anymore.

(B)Thank you, Jo.

(J)[gasp] Barth, watch out!

Barth swiftly gazes upwards to find a bandit dashing towards him with an axe. With lightning-fast reflexes, Barth raises his uninjured arm and unleashes a powerful thunder spell, striking the bandit and sending him crashing to the ground. The horse, spooked by the sudden violence, begins to panic and rear up, causing the cart to lurch dangerously. Thomas and Joanna struggle to maintain their balance as Barth shifts his attention to the horse, promptly standing up and hurrying over to try to soothe it, but his efforts prove futile. With a swift decision, Barth unstraps the horse from the cart, releasing it from its harness to prevent it from bolting and potentially harming his future in-laws. The horse gallops wildly into the forest, leaving the cart idle. Meanwhile, the bandits charge at Barth once more, only to be met by Thomas's relentless barrage of spells, which he casts with precision and speed to protect his future son-in-law.

(B)Come on, you guys hurry, we can’t hold them off for much longer.

(T)Thank you for taking care of the horse, Barth. Now go take cover or you’ll get hurt even more.

(B)I’ll be fine, Tom. I’m bandaged up and ready to fight again. My right arm is just useless now. I still have a second arm, remember?

(T)You’re a tough one, Barth, I’ll give you that.

(B)I have to be or you both won’t get to see your daughter get married. I had to be strong for Merig when we were kids, so this is nothing.

(J)If you get killed, Merig won’t have his big brother. Please rest until help comes.

(T)She’s right, Barth, I’ve got these bandits, so don’t injure yourself more. You’re losing a lot of blood as it is. Please go take a rest.

(B)Sure thing, Tom, just be careful.

Barth swiftly heeds the advice, dashing back to the cart to take cover as Thomas continues to unleash a barrage of spells against the advancing bandits. Meanwhile, Merig and the others ride with urgency through the snowy forest, their horse's hooves pounding against the frozen terrain as they race against time. Gordo leads the way, his knowledge of the path guiding them toward Kate's parents and Barth. Kate's face is etched with worry as she turns to Gordo, her voice trembling with panic.

(K)How much further, Gordo?!

(G)We’re almost there!

(M)So why did these assholes decide to attack you?!

(G)They’re bandits that stayed behind when Cormac stepped down as leader and left the camp. They thought it would be a good idea to try to sabotage your wedding! Apparently, they’ve been stalking us and decided to target Kate’s parents.

(L)These bandits have balls, I’ll give them that!

(A)Can’t we just have some peace and quiet?! We’ve had enough of bandits, why don’t they all just go home and give it a rest?!

(G)They’re bandits. They don’t stop causing trouble for shit!

(L)And here we were worried about Kate’s aunt trying to stop the wedding. I didn’t think any of these bastards would try!

(G)Kate’s aunt wants to stop the wedding?!

(K)Yeah, my aunt hates Fomors! It’s a long story. I’ll fill you in later!

(G)You know we won’t let anyone stop you and Merig from getting married, Kate! We talked about that not too long ago, remember?! You have nothing to worry about!

(K)Of course, I remember, Gordo! I don’t know what I’d do without you all!

(C)I see them! Wait, something isn’t right.

(S)Is that Barth on the ground?!

(M)Oh no, he’s hurt!

As the group draws closer on the forest path, they catch sight of Barth sitting on the snowy ground, his situation dire. Thomas stands guard, still casting spells to hold off the bandits, while Joanna stands steadfastly behind him, her eyes fixed on the chaos. But in their focus on the battle ahead, they fail to notice the danger creeping up behind them. A bandit, stealthy and silent, slips up to the cart and begins to climb aboard, axe in hand, poised to strike. Just as the bandit raises his weapon, Kate's warning cry pierces the air.

(K)[gasp] Oh no, that bandit is about to attack my parents! MOM, DAD, BEHIND YOU!

(C)I got it!

Joanna and Thomas spin around, their eyes widening as they take in the bandit's sneaky approach. But before he can strike, Cormac's swift reflexes save the day. With swift aim and fire, his crossbow bolt soars through the air, hitting the bandit in the arm and sending him tumbling to the ground. As the bandit falls from the cart, Joanna and Thomas breathe a sigh of relief, their gaze shifting to the group racing towards them. Merig leads the charge, his horse thundering through the bandits surrounding Barth, rearing up to scatter them. Sarah quickly dismounts and rushes to Barth's side, kneeling down beside him as he sits on the ground. Her face etched with concern, her hands already moving to assess his injuries.

(S)Oh my goodness, Barth, what happened to you?

(B)It’s okay Sarah, it’s not that bad, it’s just a scratch.

(S)That’s more than just a scratch, Barth, just sit still. I’m here to take care of it. You’ve lost a lot of blood as it is.

Sarah carefully unwraps the bandage, revealing the gaping wound that continues to ooze blood. Her brow furrows as she reaches into her bag for her healing supplies. With practiced efficiency, she produces a small bottle of liquid. After unscrewing the lid, she offers it to Barth. He accepts the bottle gratefully, tilting his head back to swallow the liquid. As he drinks, Sarah begins the task of cleaning the wound, her movements gentle but determined.

(S)Keep drinking that, it should ease the pain while I dress your wound.

(B)Thank you, Sarah, you’re a lifesaver.

(S)Don’t thank me yet, not until you’re feeling better.

(B)[smiles] I feel better already, at least now that you’re here to save me.

As Sarah tends to Barth's wound, their eyes meet as they share a smile of warmth amidst the chaos. The rest of the group dismounts, joining the fray with renewed vigor. Merig remains on horseback, protecting his brother, his arrows flying swiftly and true as he picks off bandits with deadly precision. Larry charges forward, his swords flashing in the light as he slashes through the enemy ranks. Ashley loads her cylinder with fire crystals, unleashing a barrage of blazing projectiles that engulf the bandits. Cormac rushes to protect Kate's parents, his crossbow firing rapidly as he takes down attackers with swift efficiency. Gordo springs into action to help shield Barth, his agility allowing him to dodge and weave between bandits as he delivers powerful punches and kicks. Kate joins Cormac in the fight, her lightning spells crackling with energy as she zaps bandits at the rear of the cart. As the battle rages on, Cormac leaps into the cart, joining Joanna and Thomas as he guards them fiercely, firing bolts at any bandit daring to approach. The group's coordinated efforts begin to turn the tide of the battle, their unity and determination driving the bandits back.

(K)Mom, dad, are you two okay?!

(J)We’re fine, now that you’re all here!

(C)Don’t worry, you two, we’ll take care of them for you. We aren’t going to let these assholes hurt you.

(K)Thanks for taking care of my parents, Cormac.

(C)No problem, there’s no way in hell I’m letting these bandits in this cart.

(J)Wait, so you’re Cormac?

(C)Yes ma’am, Cormac Giffin, a pleasure to meet you.

(T)So we’re finally getting to meet you, Cormac.

(C)It would seem so, sir. It’s a shame we had to meet under these circumstances.

(T)It’s okay, you’re doing great, Cormac, thank you for your help.

(C)It’s my pleasure, sir, and if I may, I feel it’s only right that I personally apologize to both of you for my sins toward your daughter.

(K)Cormac, you don’t have to do this right now! Maybe wait till this fight ends?!

(C)It’s fine, Kate, I can multitask! I’m sorry for causing your daughter pain and anguish and I’m making it my life goal to earn her forgiveness and hopefully everyone else’s. I figured this was a good opportunity to tell you all of this. I know what I did was wrong and I’ve changed my ways.

(J)If only everyone in this world were aware of their wrongdoings, it would be a much better place, and you’re doing just that. You’re one of the few who are aware and are atoning for it, and I applaud you, Cormac.

(T)As long as you vow to never hurt anyone ever again, that’s the first step to forgiveness.

(C)Don’t worry, I’ve already made those vows to everyone in the group. I’ll prove my loyalty and that I have changed as a person. I myself was blinded by anguish and pain that another human inflicted on me and it clouded my judgment of all humans and I took my anger out on others. That fog lifted, and I opened my eyes, realizing I was wrong. Your daughter is a good person and I regret everything I've done.

(J)Good for you, dear, it’s difficult for some to see the light in the darkness as you have. And besides, you’re here protecting us, so you have our gratitude.

(T)That’s right, thank you, Cormac.

(C)Don’t thank me yet, not until these bandits are taken care of.

Cormac and Kate continue to unleash a relentless barrage of attacks, cutting down bandits left and right as they fiercely defend the cart. Meanwhile, Merig remains tall on his horse, his bow singing as he fires arrow after arrow to shield Barth from harm. Gordo continues to wage intense hand-to-hand combat, his fists and feet flying in a whirlwind of punches and kicks to repel the bandits closing in on Barth and Sarah. The pair remain huddled on the ground, Sarah's hands moving with urgency as she tends to Barth's wound, her face etched with concern. Gordo's gaze lingers for a moment, ensuring they're safe before he refocuses on the fray, his voice ringing out as he fights on.

(G)Sarah, are you two alright, over there?

(S)We’re fine. I’m almost done treating Barth’s arm.

(M)Stay there and rest Barth, I don’t want you getting hurt any worse than you already are. We’ve got these assholes, so don’t worry.

(L)We’ve got you both covered, pal, so just sit tight.

(B)You’re all my heroes.

(A)Don’t just thank us, Sarah is the real hero here.

(B)Of course, I’d be bleeding out if it weren’t for her. You’re my hero, Sarah.

(S)[giggles] I see that potion is working on you. How are you feeling?

(B)I’m starting to feel better, I’m just tired.

(S)It’s probably from all the blood you’ve lost. Just rest and try not to move too much, okay, Barth?

(B)Sure thing, healer Sarah.

(S)[smiles] I’m not a healer yet, Barth.

(B)But you’ll be the best healer in Tara.

(S)Why thank you, Barth, I try.

(L)So these bastards want to sabotage the wedding, huh?

(M)Yeah, not happening. I’m making that human my wife and neither of you assholes have to like it!

(A)We’ve worked way too hard to plan this wedding just for you filthy bandits to ruin it! Kate and Merig are getting married, whether you like it or not!

(G)And going after her parents was a huge mistake on your part!

(S)Alright, I’m all done. I got the bleeding to stop, and I wrapped Barth’s arm in a better bandage. You’ll feel tired for a while, Barth, so just close your eyes if you need to. I’ll be right here if you need me.

(B)Thank you, Sarah, you’re the best. Don’t worry about me, just make sure no one else is hurt. I wouldn’t want to hog up your time for myself.[smiles]

(S)[smiles] You’re silly, Barth. I’ll be right here with you until I’m needed elsewhere.

(B)In that case, I’ll very much enjoy your company.

(S)[giggles] That potion must be really strong for you.

(B)I do feel relaxed and maybe a little loopy. I’m sorry.

(S)Don’t be sorry, Barth, just enjoy your rest and this should all be over soon…I hope.

(M)With us here, it shouldn’t take much longer. Don’t worry, big brother!

(L)I just hope Kate and Cormac are okay.

(A)Me too, they’re back there protecting Jo and Tom.

On the opposite side of the cart, Cormac steadfastly mans his crossbow, picking off bandits with precision shots as they dare to approach. Meanwhile, Thomas joins forces with Kate at the rear of the cart. Their magic intertwines in a harmonious dance of destruction as they unleash a barrage of spells to devastating effect. Having cleared the immediate area, Cormac scans the surrounding terrain, his eyes scanning the trees and bushes for any signs of hidden threats. His vigilance pays off as he spots two archers, crouched and concealed behind a bush, their bows drawn and aimed at Kate. Cormac shouts a warning to Kate, his voice cutting through the chaos to alert her to the impending danger.

(C)Kate, get down!

Kate observes the archers and swiftly lowers herself to the ground to evade their attacks. Cormac takes aim with his crossbow and successfully hits one bandit in the chest, resulting in his death. The second archer targets Kate's parents and releases an arrow. Cormac notices the projectile hurtling towards Thomas and Joanna, who are unaware of the impending danger. He hastens to their side, positioning himself in front of them to shield them from the arrow. The arrow soars through the air, striking Cormac in the right shoulder, close to his chest. He glances down at his injury as the pain begins to set in, clutching his chest in distress. Moments later, he loses consciousness and collapses from the cart, landing on his back in the snow. Thomas and Joanna hear the thud and turn to see Cormac sprawled on the ground with the arrow embedded in his shoulder. Filled with rage, Thomas glares at the bandit responsible and quickly conjures his thunder spell, unleashing it upon the archer who shot Cormac, bringing him down. Thomas shouts for Kate, who looks up to see Cormac on the ground, the arrow still lodged in his shoulder, prompting her to call out to him in a state of panic.

(K)Cormac, no!

Kate's heart races as she jumps to her feet, hurrying to Cormac's side and lifting his upper body in her arms while urgently calling for Sarah's assistance. Meanwhile, Barth and Sarah turn their attention to Kate's distressed voice on the other side, their expressions filled with worry. Sarah and Barth exchange a quick glance, with Sarah giving Barth a frantic, apologetic look before Barth nods in understanding and begins to speak.

(B)Please go help her, I’ll be fine here, Sarah.

(S)Okay, please watch over Barth, Gordo. Kate needs me.

(G)Go ahead, Sarah, we’ll cover him, don’t worry.

Sarah nods in agreement, her hands already reaching for her bag of healing supplies. With a burst of adrenaline, she stands and rushes to Kate and Cormac's side. The sight that greets her is a jolt of terror. Kate is cradling Cormac, blood seeping from the arrow embedded in his shoulder. Panic surges through Sarah as she kneels beside Cormac, her hands trembling as she places her bag on the ground. Cormac's cry of pain fills the air, and Sarah's expression turns sympathetic as she begins to work, her hands moving with precision and speed to stabilize him.

(S)Hold him still, I have to try to stop the bleeding. I have something he can drink. It’ll ease the pain.

Sarah dives into her collection of healing supplies, searching for the right potion to help Cormac. With a steady hand, she uncorks the bottle and gently lifts his head, guiding the liquid to his lips as he sips the potion. Once he finishes, he winces and grunts and lets out low groans of discomfort. Not deterred, Sarah digs deeper into her bag, retrieving additional healing items to tend to Cormac’s injury.

(S)Okay, now I can treat him.

(K)It's going to be okay, Cormac, just try taking deep breaths, okay? Sarah is here to help.

(C)[grunts] Take care of your parents, Kate, don’t worry about me.

(K)Absolutely not, Cormac, I can cast my spells from here. I’m not leaving you.

Kate gazes upwards and spots bandits sprinting in their direction. With a swift snap of her fingers, she unleashes the full power of her lightning spell. The bolts of electricity shoot out towards the bandits closing in on them by the cart, swiftly taking them down. Meanwhile, Ashley catches the sound of the chaos and glances back to witness Kate and Sarah assisting an injured Cormac. Panic sets in as she quickly turns to the rest of the group to alert them of the unfolding situation.

(A)You guys, Cormac’s been shot!

(M)What?!

(L)Are you serious?!

Merig and Larry glance over to find Sarah and Kate attending to Cormac, who lies in the snow with an arrow embedded in his shoulder, blood seeping from his wound. Concern is etched on the faces of the others present. Merig dismounts from his horse without hesitation and focuses on the bandits encircling Kate and the others. His eyes turn crimson, blazing with fury as he unleashes a terrifying roar, commanding the bandits to halt their assault.

(M)STOP! IF EITHER OF YOU ASSHOLES CONTINUES TO ATTACK US, WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO KILL YOU!

The forest falls into an abrupt silence as the bandits halt in their tracks. They stare at Merig, their bodies rigid with fear. The rest of the group is also stunned by the sudden shift in the atmosphere. Merig's eyes lose their crimson hue, as he rushes to Cormac's side, his movements swift and urgent. Larry and Ashley follow closely behind, their faces mirroring Merig's concern. Gordo remains by Barth's side, his eyes scanning the perimeter for any signs of aggressive movement. Merig kneels beside Kate, as he speaks softly to Cormac.

(M)Cormac, can you hear me?

(C)[grunts] Yeah, it just hurts a lot.

(S)That potion should kick in any second. I’m doing my best to stop the bleeding. I don’t want to take the arrow out, it’ll just make him bleed more.

(K)We have to take him to Nessa.

(C)Don’t worry about me, just take care of these bandits and make sure your parents don’t get hurt.

(M)Kate’s right, you need to get to the healer.

(S)They’re right, there’s only so much I can do with what I have, Cormac. The arrow is too deep for me to get it out without it killing you.

(C)Then let it kill me. I’m the least of your worries.

(K)No, Cormac, there’s no way in hell we’re letting you die.

(C)[grunts] Listen, I know you want to help me, but we’re too far out of the city and I’m already starting to feel cold and it’s hard to breathe. Finish the fight and get your parents home. That’s the most important thing right now.

(L)We’ll take care of them, but we’re not letting you die here, Cormac.

(A)Maybe Sarah can take you on a horse and you both can ride back to Tara.

(J)They’re absolutely right. Don’t worry about us, dear, your life is at stake.

(C)I appreciate all of your concern, but I have a feeling that I won’t make it in time. This is how I redeem myself, by dying the same way Merig did. I get to feel how you felt that night, Merig, and this is how I pay for what I did. I still feel immense guilt that I can’t seem to let go of and I won’t feel it anymore if I’m gone.

(M)Cormac, don’t say that. You redeem yourself if you live through this and not die from it.

(K)Exactly, if you die, then the guilt will be on me. I can’t live with myself if that happens.

(S)Me too, especially since I’m the one trying my best to treat you. I won’t be able to consider myself a healer if I just stop and let you die here. I’m taking you back to Tara, and Nessa will take care of you.

(L)I’ll go, too. We'll make sure you make it there in time.

(A)As much as I don’t necessarily like you, that doesn’t mean I wish death upon you.

(C)But why? Even after everything, you all still care.

(K)Because that’s just who we are, Cormac, I still have a heart despite the things you’ve done. But there’s no time for that. We have to get you back to the city.

(C)Like I said, there’s no guarantee that I’ll make it. Just leave me here and finish the fight.

Still seated on the ground opposite the cart, Barth overhears the ongoing conversation and rolls his eyes, clearly exasperated by the situation. With a grunt of effort, he struggles to his feet, his injured arm clutched tightly against his side. Gordo remains watchful, stationed beside the cart, protecting Kate's parents. Barth, determined to join the others, stumbles around the cart, his movements labored and awkward. As he approaches the group, they turn to face him, their expressions a mix of concern and curiosity. Sarah looks up, her eyes meeting Barth's as he stands beside her. Cormac moves his head, his gaze weak but determined as he looks up at Barth. With a soft pant, Barth speaks in an annoyed tone, his words laced with a hint of frustration.

(B)Shut the hell up. This isn’t how you die, Cormac. Now let’s go. Sarah is nice enough to take you back to the city. I’m going with you and we’re going to the healer, you got that? I don’t want to hear any more bullshit from you.

Barth releases his grip on his own arm, fighting against the pain, and sinks to his knees beside Sarah to help Cormac. With a flick of his wrist, he conjures a fire spell, igniting the arrow before carefully snapping it to reduce its length. Next, he directs the flames toward Cormac’s wound, the heat searing the flesh to halt the bleeding, causing Cormac to grunt in agony. Once he completes the urgent task, Barth gazes down at Cormac, ready to speak.

(B)There, that buys us time to get to the healer. Are you ready to go, Sarah?

(S)Yes, let’s go, there’s no more time to waste.

(M)You three get out of here and you need to get treated as well, Barth.

(B)I’ll be just fine, little brother. I’m more worried about Cormac.

(K)Merig is right. You both need to go to Nessa, and she’ll take care of you.

(B)Alright, sis, if anything happens to any of you, I’m coming after every last one of these damn bandits.

(L)Don’t worry, pal, we’ll be here in case they start coming at us again.

(A)Yeah, these assholes wouldn’t dare try anything stupid.

(G)They started this fight and we’ll finish it. You’ll be okay, Cormac, we won’t let you die.

(J)We’ll be fine here, Cormac, just go and get the help you need.

(T)You saved our lives, Cormac, thank you.

(C)As long as you’re both okay, that’s all I care about.

(B)Alright, that’s enough chatting. As Sarah said, there’s no time to waste.

(S)Right, I’ll help you get him off the ground and on a horse.

Barth teeters on the brink of falling, his knees buckling, prompting Sarah to assist him as her arms wrap around him. In turn, Barth clings to Sarah as she aids him in standing. With a sharp whistle, Barth summons his horse. Together, Barth and Sarah lock eyes, sharing a warm smile. They release each other and Barth circles around Cormac, approaching from the other side. Both Barth and Sarah share a nod of understanding. They position themselves on each side of Cormac before they crouch down to lift him. Kate releases her hold on Cormac, his pained grunt echoes in the air. With coordinated effort, Barth and Sarah heave him to his feet, their combined strength luckily enough to counter his weight. Cormac, his face etched with agony, secures himself by wrapping one arm around Barth and the other around Sarah. He clings to them both for support as their arms become a makeshift brace. The horse trots over and halts nearby. With labored steps, they guide Cormac towards the animal, helping him hoist himself into the saddle. Barth ensures Cormac is secure before mounting the saddle behind him, his hands firm on the reins. Sarah watches with a mix of concern and determination, before hastening to mount her own steed and rides towards them.

(B)We’ll meet you all back in Tara. Jo, Tom, it was great meeting you and we’ll see you both again soon.

(J)Bye, Barth, it was lovely meeting you, too.

(T)Thank you for everything and let us know if Cormac is okay.

(B)Little brother, tell these bandits to go to hell. They’ve done enough. We’ll be at the healer when you get back.

(M)[nods] Do what you have to, just get there safely.

(B)We will, don’t worry. Are you ready, Sarah?

(S)I’m ready, Barth, let’s go.

With a shared determination, Barth and Sarah swiftly pivot towards the city, urging their horses forward. Their focus is solely on the city, racing against time to get Cormac to the healer. The three of them thunder across the snowy landscape, horse hooves pounding out an urgent rhythm. The rest of the group watches them disappear into the distance, their faces etched with concern. Meanwhile, Merig turns his attention to Kate, approaching her with a warm smile. He offers his hand, and Kate takes it, her eyes sparkling with gratitude. With a gentle tug, Merig helps Kate to her feet, and they envelop each other in a tight, comforting embrace. As they hold each other, Merig's gaze sweeps across the group, his eyes lingering on each face before shifting to the bandits scattered around them.

(M)These bandits need to leave. They’ve caused enough trouble.

(L)Agreed, we’ll tell them the screw off, then Gordo and I can take Kate’s parents back home.

(K)No, Merig and I can go with Gordo. I want to make sure they get back to Taill safely myself. You and Ash head home and make sure Cormac is okay.

(M)Okay, sweetheart, I think that’s a good idea as well.

(L)You’re the boss, Kate, they’re your parents.

(A)Please just be careful, hon. You too, Jo and Tom.

(K)Don’t worry, we will.

(J)We’ll be just fine, sweetheart.

(T)With Merig here, I think we’re going to be alright.

Merig and Kate break their embrace, their attention shifting to the bandits. Larry, too, joins their focus. The once chaotic scene has stilled, the bandits now standing frozen in place. A collective breath is held as Merig and Larry's voices cut through the tension. Their words are sharp, their tone demanding as they confront the outlaws, their anger palpable in the air.

(M)Listen up! You’re going to either go back to your camp, or I can call every Royal Guard in Tara over here and we’ll continue fighting and kill every last one of you. What’s it going to be?!

(L)Thanks to you all, Cormac is in critical condition and he may die before he even reaches the healer in the city! Leave us be and let Kate’s parents pass. This marriage between her and Merig is happening in less than two months, and you know what we’re capable of if you try to stop it. You know damn well none of you stand a chance against the Royal Guards of Tara!

(M)Leave, or I use my signal horn and call for reinforcements!

Merig and Larry's eyes dart across the terrified remnants of the bandit crew. Fear and defeat etch themselves on each survivor's face. Their breaths quicken as they scan the crowd, searching for any sign of defiance. Amidst the chaos, a figure emerges from the chaotic horde, pushing forward to claim the spotlight.

(I)Merig, is Cormac going to be okay?

(M)We hope so. What’s your name?

(I)I’m Ingo. I became the leader when Cormac left.

(M)You and the bandits need to leave us alone, Ingo. We’ll let you know whether Cormac makes it or not. Try to hurt anyone else or sabotage my wedding again and I will command my guards and we will raid your damn camp and burn it to the ground. Cormac is no longer a bandit and he'll be training to be one of my guards, and he will join me in raiding your camp.

(I)Fine, we’ll go, just don’t let him die.

(M)The healer will do her best.

(I)Congratulations on your wedding, as much as we don’t like it happening. I guess we’ll have to tolerate it.

(M)You have no choice but to tolerate it. Also, you will not attack us on our way back, either, got it?!

(I)We’re leaving, you have my word. Alright boys, let’s get out of here!

Ingo turns to face his bandits, barking orders to cease the attack. His horde scrambles to gather the fallen and wounded, their bodies limp and broken. With grim efficiency, the bandits hoist themselves and their comrades onto horses and vanish into the deepening forest. Gordo circles the cart, his gaze fixed on Kate and Merig. A heavy silence descends upon the woods as the echoes of battle fade. Merig's attention shifts to Joanna and Thomas, his mind racing.

(M)Sorry about that, you two. They won’t be bothering us anymore.

(J)Don’t be sorry, Merig, you all saved us and we can’t thank you enough.

(T)Give Cormac our regards and our thanks as well.

(M)We will, but first, we need to get you home. Gordo, are you okay?

(G)Not a scratch on me, don’t worry. It seems we did lose the horse pulling the cart, so I’ll use my horse to pull it.

(M)Alright sounds like a plan. Larry, Ash, go ahead and go back home and we’ll meet up at the healer.

(L)Aye, Commander, you and Kate come back home safely. Come on, honey, let’s head home.

(A)Alright, sweetheart. Be careful getting to Taill and back, okay? Bye Jo, bye Tom, it was good seeing you both again.

(J)Goodbye, Ash, we’ll be just fine now that Kate and Merig will be with us.

(T)It was good seeing you, too. We’ll see you again at the wedding.

(K)Don’t worry, Ash, we’ll be fine, I love you.

(A)I love you, too, hon.

Larry and Ashley bid farewell to each other before setting off on their journey. They walk side by side, arms linked, towards their horses. As they reach the horses, they mount gracefully and ride off towards the city. The snow crunches beneath their horse's hooves as they gallop back to Tara. Gordo signals for his horse, which obediently trots over to him. He takes hold of the reins and leads the horse to the cart, securing it in place. Meanwhile, Kate and Merig refocus their attention on Joanna and Thomas, with Kate taking the lead in the conversation.

(K)So, are you two ready to go home?

(J)We’re ready, honey, we hope you don’t get back too late.

(M)No worries, we should get back just in time if we leave now.

(J)Please let us know if Cormac makes it.

(K)I’ll definitely let you know when I write to you again.

(M)We’re sorry this all happened, we really didn’t expect it.

(J)It’s not your fault, Merig. No one could have predicted it.

(T)It was just rotten luck, but we were lucky you all showed up, so it wasn’t all bad.

(G)I got the horse strapped to the cart!

(M)Alright, let’s embark on the rest of this journey, shall we?

(K)[smiles] We shall.

(J)Yes, let’s go home, Tom. I’m so tired and rattled by all of this.

(T)Alright, honey, you’re going to rest when we get back. You’ve been through enough today.

(K)Alright, my love, let’s climb on board.

(M)Sure thing, sweetheart, it should be a smooth trip from here.

Gordo secures the last strap and then climbs into the driver's seat. He grabs the reins and adjusts his grip, readying himself for departure. Kate and Merig step into the cart, their faces alight with smiles as they settle across from Joanna and Thomas. Joanna nestles closer to Thomas, seeking warmth, while Kate mirrors the action with Merig. Gordo glances back, making sure everyone is comfortable and secure before urging the horse forward.

(G)Is everyone ready?

(K)We’re ready, Gordo!

(G)Alright, and we’re off.

Gordo's voice urges the horse forward as the cart advances along the road toward Tailltean. After what feels like an eternity, the familiar sprawl of the town comes into view. The cart grinds to a halt near one of the town entrances. Joanna and Thomas, followed by Kate and Merig, step down from the cart. A flurry of hugs and heartfelt goodbyes fills the air as the group prepares to part ways.

(K)Now you’re both home safe, I’m sorry for all that’s happened. If I had known, we would’ve come with you.

(J)Don’t blame yourself, honey, things happen and sometimes for a reason.

(K)Well, Cormac clearly had a reason to risk his life.

(T)We really don’t wish death upon him and we hope he’s alive.

(M)Despite everything, I do too. I agree he doesn’t deserve death.

(K)Exactly, but we’ll see when we get back, and I’ll write to you like I said.

(J)Okay, baby girl, all three of you get back safely, please.

(T)Yes, please. Hopefully, we won’t run into any trouble before the wedding.

(K)I really hope so, too.

(M)I’ve got it all worked out. No one is stopping us from getting married. I’ll make sure of it.

(J)Good, we’ll make sure of it, too. We love you both so much. We can’t wait to see you two get married.

(K)You and Dad take care of yourselves and we’ll see you again soon. We love you both as well.

(G)Goodbye, you two, it was nice meeting you again.

(J)It was nice meeting you, too, Gordo.

(T)Goodbye, Gordo.

(M)Goodbye, Jo, Tom.

(T)Goodbye, son-in-law.

(K)Goodbye, Mom, Dad. Get some rest, you’ll need it.

(T)Goodbye, pumpkin.

(J)Goodbye, my baby girl. Goodbye, Merig.

All four share smiles as they finish saying their goodbyes once again. Kate and Merig turn away, climb back into the cart and sit down. Gordo makes sure they are settled in before he commands the horse while Joanna and Thomas wave goodbye. After making the journey back home, they arrive back at Tara and immediately head over to the healer to check on Cormac. All three of them open the door and rush in to see Cormac lying down in a bed. He’s sleeping with his bare chest and shoulder bandaged up. Nessa sits on the right side of Cormac’s bed while Larry and Ashley stand on the opposite side with their arms around each other. Barth is sitting up in a separate bed behind Nessa with his arm bandaged up, while Sarah sits to the left of him at his bedside. They all look up to see Kate, Merig, and Gordo standing in the room before all three approaches the end of Cormac’s bed.

(M)Nessa, how is he?

(N)[smiles] Sarah and Barth got him here just in time for us to save him. He’s going to be just fine. He just needs to rest. He’s sleeping right now.

(M)Thank you, Nessa. You’re the best.

(N)It wasn’t just me, Sarah helped me and she did a wonderful job.

(M)Thank you, Sarah.

(K)I knew you’d be an amazing healer one day.

(S)It was nothing at all.

(M)You helped save a life, that’s something.

(K)It’s a relief that he’s okay. My parents are home, safe.

(A)Good, did you run into trouble getting back?

(K)Thankfully no, we got back just fine.

(M)Are the rest of you okay?

(A)We’re fine.

(L)We’re just glad Cormac is gonna make it.

(M)Yeah, me too.

Warm smiles spread through the small group gathered around Cormac's bed as their focus shifts back to the sleeping goblin. Merig's gaze wanders to Barth, and the two brothers share a smile. With a gentle determination, Merig moves towards Barth’s bedside and sits, his body language radiating concern. As he takes Barth's hand in his own, his eyes, filled with a mix of worry and affection, Merig gazes at Barth's arm, then looks up at Barth.

(B)Hey, little brother.

(M)Hey, you okay?

(B)I’m fine, luckily I didn’t lose too much blood, thanks to Sarah.

(M)Good, I was really worried.

(B)No need to worry about me, I’m still alive.

(M)Yeah, thankfully. Thank you for treating him, Sarah. It means a lot.

(S)Of course, I couldn’t let him bleed out.

(B)Sarah’s bedside manners are the best. If I ever get hurt again, I’m definitely requesting her as my nurse every time.

(S)[giggles] That’s if I’m good enough to work here as a healer.

(B)Oh, you’re more than good enough, Sarah. You helped save Cormac’s life and mine. I’m sure Nessa would love to have you work here with her.

(N)He’s right, Sarah, I could really use your help here, and I’d love to train you if you’re up for it.

(S)[smiles] Really? Of course, I’ll help you. I’ll start whenever you want me to.

(N)Well, today was your first day. I look forward to seeing you next.

Nessa rises from her chair beside Cormac's bed, pivoting to face Barth and Sarah's side of the room. She approaches Barth's bed and meets Sarah's gaze, a warm smile spreading across Nessa's face as she offers a subtle nod in affirmation. Sarah's eyes light up in response, her lips curving into a radiant grin. A soft, joyful giggle escapes her as Barth quietly joins her in celebrating her achievement.

(S)Thank you so much, Nessa. You don’t know how much this means to me.

(B)See? I told you, you‘re more than good enough. You’re going to do great things, Sarah.

(S)Thank you for believing in me, Barth.

(B)Of course, we’re all here to cheer you on.

(K)He’s right, Sarah, thank you for helping save both of them.

(S)[smiles] Of course, that’s what I do best. Besides, I couldn’t let my friends die.

Kate walks around to the left side of Cormac's bed and settles into the chair that Nessa had just vacated. She pauses, her gaze fixed on Cormac, and a faint frown creases her brow. After a moment, she shifts her focus to the floor, her expression heavy with emotion. With a sigh, Kate lowers her head, removing her glasses as tears begin to spill down her cheeks, pooling in her lap as she stares downwards.

(K)I feel like this is my fault, he felt he had to risk his life.

(A)Maybe he has changed, and we gave him a chance to prove that.

(L)It’s not your fault, Kate. We goblins in here know Cormac better than everyone in this room. This is how Cormac was before he became the leader of the camp. He would lay down his life for us and we could always count on him.

(G)It’s true, and it was devastating to see him change into a completely different person.

(B)He wasn’t the Cormac we knew and cared about when he became the leader. The way he is now is the way we remember him.

(M)I was skeptical at first, but he’s definitely changed into his old self again.

(K)I still feel guilty for some reason.

(L)It’s because you have a heart, Kate. You care about everyone and you don’t want to see people get hurt. We know you and you felt guilty when Merig got hurt that night at the camp. You even blamed yourself when he died, saying you should’ve never come to Tara. But you being here was the best thing that happened to Merig and now you’re both going to be married. You can’t let guilt weigh on you, and I know it’s hard for you not to care.

(G)He’s right, you’re too good of a person to feel guilty about anything. You’ve never done anything bad since I’ve known you. I’m sure Ash and Sarah know more about you than I do since they grew up with you.

(A)She’s never done one bad thing in her life, I can say that for sure.

(S)I only met her when we were teens, but I don’t remember her ever doing anything terrible for as long as I’ve known her, or ever heard about it.

(G)There you have it. I know you care about people and I know you don’t wish death or pain on anyone. But Cormac getting hurt isn’t your fault, Kate, he chose to risk himself to save your parents’ life because he cares, and that’s the true Cormac.

(L)It’s true, believe it or not. The reason I was so open to letting him be part of my life again, is because I know how he really is deep down and that he’s a good person at heart. But Merig wasn’t the only skeptical one.

(M)I think we were all skeptical. But like you said, Larry, we goblins know the true Cormac.

(B)That we do and I’m glad he’s alive.

(L)I’m glad he’s alive, too.

(G)I am, too, despite everything.

(K)Thank you all, your words have helped me understand. I don’t feel guilty, I just care too much about people’s lives and I don’t want Cormac to die. No matter how I feel about him, his life is precious, too.

(A)You’re the most forgiving person I know, Kate, and the fact that he’s making amends with you and everyone else here is probably the reason you care about him.

(K)You’re right, he deserves a second chance and I’ll gladly give him that chance.

Kate gazes around the room, her smile breaking through the veil of tears as she wipes her cheeks dry. Turning her attention back to Cormac, she notices his hand resting peacefully while he sleeps. With a tender touch, she takes his hand and cradles it gently between her own, her smile warm and affectionate. Merig rises from his seat beside Barth and shifts his chair closer to Kate, settling down beside her. Their eyes meet, and Merig wraps his arm around her, sharing a moment of quiet understanding. Together, they turn their gaze back to Cormac, and as fresh tears spill down Kate's face, her voice trembles before she finds the strength to speak to him.

(K)If you can hear me, Cormac, I’m glad you’re okay. Thank you so much, for your bravery and for protecting my parents and risking your life and I’m sorry that you got hurt doing it. I just want you to know that I don’t hate you. I’ve always had one philosophy in life, love the person but hate the things that they’ve done. And I don’t hate you, I just hate what you did, that’s all. I’ll do my best to forgive that. But I’ve already forgiven you as a person because you came here and bettered yourself like I said you should. I’m not saying you had to listen to me because you have free will, so I won’t take all the credit.

(C)Go ahead, I’ll happily give you all of the credit in the world.

Kate appears astonished as Cormac gradually opens his eyes and shifts his gaze towards her, offering a gentle smile. The other members of the group gaze at Cormac, their eyes widening in surprise as they focus their attention on him. Cormac winces in discomfort and finds it challenging to adjust his position while he continues to speak in a soft, low, and labored tone.

(C)You’re the reason I came here because you made me want to be better and to be the person that other goblins know me to be. You made me want to go back to being a good person, the person I used to be. I’m glad you don’t hate me, just what I did and what I did may have made you all look at me differently…especially the ones that know my true self. But I can promise you, that wasn’t me, just like the other goblins said. Don’t be sorry for my decisions in life, whether good or bad. Feel bad for me, fine, but don’t ever feel guilty for my actions. I still feel terrible about what I did to you and Merig and you shouldn’t forgive that because I don’t, and what I did was wrong. But I’m glad that you forgive me. Thank you, Kate.

(K)Of course, you’re a hero, Cormac.

(C)I’m not sure if I deserve that title, but I’ll embrace it.

(M)I think you deserve it. You saved two very important people’s lives today, Cormac.

(C)Thanks, Merig, I’ll proudly wear the title then, even though I still don’t think I deserve it.

(M)I didn’t think I deserved Kate and her love, but as time went on, I realized that I did and I’m the luckiest goblin in the world.

(K)[smiles] That’s right, we may not feel like we deserve things, but if we do good things in life, then good things can happen to us. You risked your life for someone and you get a second chance. That’s your reward, as well as my forgiveness.

(C)I’m not done redeeming myself just yet, but I understand what you’re saying.

(L)Just focus on recovering for right now.

(A)He’s right, don’t move too much or you won’t heal as quickly.

(C)Don’t worry yourselves, I’ll be alright.

(K)How long are you going to keep him here, Nessa?

(N)He needs to be here for at least a week before I feel comfortable sending him home. And even then he’ll need at-home care until he fully recovers.

(G)Then it looks like you’ll be here for a bit, Cormac, rest easy.

(K)We’ll come and visit you here every day and we’ll come take care of you at home, Nessa’s orders.

(C)You don’t have to do that, but I appreciate it. Thank you Nessa and Sarah for saving my life. You’re my heroes.

(N)Of course, that’s my job, Cormac.

(S)I was happy to help, since it’s pretty much my job now, too.

(C)And thank you, Barth, for talking sense into me and getting me on that horse to come here.

(B)Always here to give a pep talk when someone needs it. Besides, I wasn’t going to let you die.

(M)Let’s all just be happy the chaos is over. I gave those bandits a hefty warning and told them you’d join me in burning down their camp if they caused any more trouble.

(C)[chuckles] I’ll be glad to put fear into those bastards.

(M)The new boss, Ingo, wanted me to let him and the rest of the bandits know that you’re alive.

(C)Oh yeah, him, I guess we can send them a letter. Other than that, I don’t care about the bandits anymore. I care about the ones who came here to start a new life.

(M)Hey, I’m just the messenger.

(C)Well, you guys go home and don’t lose sleep over me, okay? Finish getting ready for your wedding. I might not be fully recovered before then, but I’ll still help if you want me to.

(K)Of course, we’re almost fully prepared for the wedding. Oh, Nessa! You’re more than welcome to come. I’ll definitely send you an invitation.

(N)Absolutely! I would love to attend your wedding! I remember it wasn’t that long ago when I kept telling Merig to take you out on a date. And now look at you two, you’re about to tie the knot. It’s such an exciting event and I can’t wait.

(M)Thanks, Nessa, we’re very excited.

(C)Alright, you guys get going, I’ll be here.

(K)Alright, you stay in bed. I think we’ve all had enough adventure for one day.

(L)Agreed, take care, Cormac. I’ll come visit as well.

(M)Don’t give Nessa any trouble, or she might slip you some heavy painkillers.[smirk]

(N)[giggles] Oh Merig, stop your fibbing. I only give a little to my more rowdy patients, I promise.

(C)[chuckles] Then I guess I gotta behave, huh?

(N)You’re perfectly fine, Cormac.

(A)Well, I know I’m tired from all the chaos.

(G)That makes all of us. We’ll come by tomorrow to see you, Cormac.

(C)Okay, I’ll see you all later.

(S)Do you want me to help you walk home, Barth?

(B)[smiles] I’d love that. Thank you, Sarah. I’m still kind of woozy from the blood loss, so that would help a lot.

(S)[smiles] Alright, then let's get you home.

A warm smile passes between the two as Sarah gently assists Barth out of bed, steadying him as he leans against her for support. She does her utmost to keep him upright, preventing any chance of him toppling over. Meanwhile, the others finish their farewells for now to Cormac, gathering their things and making their way out of the healer's space before heading home. Later that evening, Kate and Merig slip into their nightclothes, readying themselves for sleep. Merig perches on the edge of the bed, and as Kate emerges from the bathroom, their eyes meet, sparking a shared smile. With open arms, Kate approaches Merig, enveloping him in a warm embrace as she stands over him. He wraps his arms around her, tenderly stroking her back as she speaks softly.

(K)I’m so tired, my love.

(M)I am, too, we both deserve some rest. I think I’ll take the next few days off since Cormac is at the healer, so I can’t train him yet. I can spend those days with you and finish preparing for the wedding.

(K)[smiles] I think I’d like that. I want to spend all day with you tomorrow if that’s okay. Although, I did promise Cormac we’d visit him for the next week, so I can’t break that promise to him.

(M)That’s fine with me, sweetheart. I think Cormac has earned my respect again and the respect of everyone else.

(K)I think so, too. I was skeptical just like you and now I see his potential as a person. It looks like things are changing for the better.

(M)It seems like it, now I just have to worry about making you my wife. That’s the most important thing to me, right now.

(K)I couldn’t agree more, my love. I will soon belong to you, my earth.

(M)And I will belong to you, my moon.

(K)I love you so much, Merig.

(M)I love you, too, Kate.

Kate's hands tenderly cradle Merig's face, her fingertips tracing the contours of his goblin skin. As she leans in, their lips meet in a soft, gentle kiss. Merig's arms envelop Kate, holding her close as they savor the moment. As they pull away, their eyes lock, and foreheads and noses touch, their smiles a sweet, silent language. After a while, the two settle into bed, wrapped in each other's arms. Their lips meet in soft, content kisses as they drift off to sleep, lost in the warmth of their love.
