Beg for Forgiveness

Beg for Forgiveness

The following morning, the training grounds come alive with the presence of Merig and the other goblins. Larry and Gordo, as usual, observe from the sidelines as Merig begins his training session with Barth. With precise movements, Merig sends training bolts soaring into the sky, providing targets for Barth's developing magic. Barth's breath comes in rapid gasps as he charges and releases ice bolts, aiming to intercept Merig's projectiles. Frustration creases his brow as he misses, but determination fuels his continued efforts. The icy bolts fly through the air, some finding their mark, while others fall harmlessly to the ground. Eventually, Merig's supply of bolts dwindles, forcing a pause in the exercise. Barth stands panting, a sheen of sweat glistening on his skin. Merig offers a supportive smile as he surveys the scattered bolts that litter the snowy ground, damaged and undamaged.

(M)Good work, you’re starting to get better. Your casting speed is improving as well as your accuracy.

(B)Thanks, I got a good workout from that.

(M)We can stop for now. Let’s go take a break.

(B)Sure thing, little brother.

Merig grabs his crossbow and stashes it among the rest of his gear before heading to the resting area with Barth, Larry, and Gordo. The four goblins settle in, taking a load off and engaging in some casual conversation. Merig, in particular, seems to be in high spirits as he takes a seat with a big grin, catching Larry's attention and prompting him to speak.

(L)So I take it dinner with the future in-laws went pretty well, huh, Merig?

(B)Yeah, you look really happy today.

(M)[smiles] That’s because I’m very happy, and the dinner actually went great. Kate’s dad even gifted me this ring for the wedding.

(G)Really?

(M)Yeah, it’s on my hand, I’ll show you.

Merig slips the ring from his finger and holds it up for the others to see. Curiosity piqued, the goblins gather around, their eyes widening in awe at the intricate design. Larry carefully takes the ring from Merig's outstretched hand, turning it over and over to admire its craftsmanship. The others lean in for a closer look, their expressions a mix of wonder and envy. After a moment, Larry returns the ring to Merig, who slips it back onto his finger with a satisfied smile.

(L)Wow, that looks really nice. What’s it made of?

(M)Iron and arrowhead.

(L)That definitely sounds like a ring you would wear, Merig. It’s as if it was made just for you.

(M)Those were my thoughts exactly, buddy. I didn’t expect it to be a perfect fit, either, but as soon as I put it on, it was like it became a part of me. I’m in love with it.

(B)[chuckles] Don’t tell Kate or she might get jealous.

(M)She actually likes it, too. She was really worried about finding a wedding ring for me. But to my surprise, during dinner when Kate mentioned it, Thomas took out this ring and gave it to me. He said it was a gift from him and Joanna as thanks for taking care of their daughter. He said it’s a family heirloom. It belonged to Kate’s great-grandfather.

(B)Holy shit, that’s awesome, little brother. I’d say the in-laws love you if they gave you a family heirloom. You must be really special to them.

(G)Well yeah, I’m pretty sure from all the stories Kate has told her parents, he’s practically a hero to them, which they wouldn’t be wrong. Besides, Kate’s their daughter, and I’m sure they appreciate everything Merig has done for her.

(M)Yeah, but you never know, Kate could’ve exaggerated the story a little.

(L)Merig, you shielded Kate and stopped a bolt from impaling her and Barth. You died in Kate’s arms as she cried at the top of her lungs because she lost you, someone she loves with every fiber of her being. She loves you so much that she revived you the second she found out about the necklace you gave her. That’s not exactly an exaggeration, pal. That’s what actually happened, among other things. I know, I was there and so was Barth.

(M)Look, I get it and I know that she loves me, which brings me to the next part of the conversation. We actually had another talk last night, and that’s why I’m so happy today. I had a big epiphany, and it hit me last night during dinner. I asked Kate’s parents if they cared if I was a Fomor marrying their daughter and, of course, they accepted me and gave me their blessing.

(L)Well, that’s a good thing and I bet you finally understand how much Kate loves you, don’t you?

(M)Actually yeah, how did you know?

(L)Because it’s something that I know you’ve struggled to understand in the past, Merig. All those times you and I talked when you and Kate first became a thing. And even before then, you always talked about not being good enough for her, or not deserving of her because you weren’t human. I kept telling you that she didn’t care and that she loves you just the way you are. She doesn’t care if you’re not human and you shouldn’t care what others think about your relationship with her. But I’m glad you finally understand that fact.

(M)Yeah, you’re right, but didn’t you struggle with something similar when you were trying to ask Ash out?

(L)For a while I did, since she rejected me so much. I thought it was because I’m a goblin, but she told me that it was because she had her heart broken so many times, that she was afraid to get into another relationship. It had nothing to do with the fact that I’m a Fomor because she didn’t care, either. I know Ash loves me and she loves who I am and what I am, otherwise we wouldn’t be together. Same with you and Kate. You two wouldn’t be getting married if she didn’t love you, Merig.

(B)He’s right, people don’t get into relationships with someone they don’t love. Kate definitely loves you and she’s very excited about your wedding. I’m the one who had to emphasize that the last time, remember? She loves you!

(M)Alright, alright I get it, you don’t need to rub it in.

(L)So how do you feel after the fact finally came down and smacked you in the face that Kate loves you and doesn’t care if you’re a goblin?

(B)Yeah, I bet it feels good to understand that she’d rather be with you than another human.

(M)It feels great. I feel more confident in myself and I’m no longer doubting myself about whether I’m good enough for Kate. Everything we talked about at dinner and her father giving me this ring is what made me finally understand. Kate never left me, even though I doubted myself and she said she never intended to because she knew I’d eventually realize that I’m worthy and deserving of her and that I’d stop questioning everything.

(L)Of course she’d never leave you, Merig, not once has she ever talked about leaving you.

(B)Yeah, as I’ve said before, she’s always talked about you in a positive way. But she did express her fear of you leaving her because of what she went through after the battle with Cormac.

(M)Kate mentioned that and how she was afraid that I would leave her. I had to reassure her that I had no intentions of it, either. I want to be with her forever and that’s why I asked her to marry me. She realized that fact the day I proposed to her, and she knows that I love her and I’d never want to leave her side.

(B)So you both opened your eyes during important events in time. She realized you still loved her when you proposed and now you realized you’re good enough for her when her parents gave you a ring to symbolize you and Kate’s love for each other. Both events involved a ring. How serendipitous.

(G)Divine intervention is more like it. It’s funny how much of an impact an object such as a ring can have on humans and even Fomors, it seems. I came to the realization that Kate doesn’t resent me and that she truly forgives me for what I did. She’s even letting me be a part of the wedding and I get to bring your rings to you so that you both can put them on each other’s fingers and practically seal your marriage and it becomes official. Rings symbolize love, eternity, and a new life with the one you love.

(M)The funny thing is, Kate pretty much said the same thing. She wants the wedding flowers to be white roses, which symbolize eternal love and new beginnings. And now I understand that she wants our marriage to be our new beginning of eternal love.

(L)That should’ve been one of many clues that Kate truly loves you, Merig. She came here to start a new life. She fell in love with you and now she wants to be with you forever.

(B)Did you ever stop to think that maybe Kate was trying to tell you something? She wanted you to see it, but you didn’t exactly notice it staring you in the face and she still left it up to you to figure out. Maybe that was Kate's intention all along. She was practically sending you a message, and this was her way of getting it through to you.

(M)[sigh] That makes so much sense, now, I’m such an idiot.

(L)No, Merig, you were just clueless and blind. You were so worried about not being good enough for Kate, that you never stopped to think that maybe you are and she was trying to tell you that. If words didn’t get through to you, then this whole wedding would, and the meaning it has behind it that she intentionally put there for you to see. Kate told you in the beginning that you’re good enough for her, but you didn’t think so and I get that. But as time went on, you realized more and more that she loves you and cares for you. A year after we met her, you finally found the confidence and the courage for her sake, and look where you two are now.

(M)I know, I shouldn’t have doubted myself and I have no further intentions of doing so.

(L)Good, because you have no reason to. Look, I’m your best friend and I care about you. I want nothing but happiness for you and Kate seems to be your happiness in life and she always has been ever since you met her. You two got to know each other and eventually, you both were in a relationship. I was impressed by your determination to win her heart and when you told me about the first time you two made love, I was shocked. I thought to myself, “That isn’t the same Merig I knew, the Merig I knew was too scared to even talk to Kate half of the time and all of a sudden, he was confessing his love for her, taking her out on a date, and making love to her.” I was tempted to ask you, “who the hell you are and what did you do with the real Merig?” But I realized it was still you, just with a shinier spine and bigger balls.[smirk]

(M)Yeah, Kate really changed me for the better. I was very determined to win her heart, and I even surprised myself when I did, and I was surprised that I didn’t screw it up for myself. The closer she and I became, the more confidence I had. The more we did together, the less scared I was. It’s amazing how much courage I had and didn’t even know it. It’s amazing how one person can change your entire perspective on life.

(L)That’s women for you, they’re something else, Merig. Very peculiar creatures and they can change your entire life for the better, or worse, depending on who they are as a person. But our women have changed us and our lives for the better and we did the same for them, it seems. Ashley is happier being with me because she’s not getting her heart broken, and Kate…well, you made her new life here worth living. I’m not sure about her past, but she seemed to love this place when she came here. You two falling in love was the best thing that happened to you both.

(M)[chuckles] Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Also, you always gotta bring my balls into this mess, don’t you? You know, you’ve got your own balls to worry about, Larry. I’m sure Ash has a good grip on them.[smirk]

(L)Hey, that woman is my heart and soul, she can have my balls any day…not that she doesn’t already.[smirk] Besides, you’re one to talk, Merig. Kate’s got you under her spell and you know it, you’d do anything for that woman.

(B)He’s right, Merig, all Kate has to do is talk to you in her soft, sweet voice and touch your hand, and you’re gone, there’s no snapping you out of it, you worship that woman.

(M)Yeah, but Kate is worth it to me, and I know Ash is worth it to you, Larry.

(L)Damn straight, I’d move mountains for that fiery goddess.

(B)You’re every bit as worth it to Kate as well. She practically melts when you talk to her as sweet as she talks to you, Merig.

(M)Yeah I know, I realize that, too.

(G)Come to think of it, I’ve never once heard you raise your voice at Kate.

(L)He’s always been that way, he’s only ever talked to her in a soft and sweet voice, just like she does with him.

(M)I’ve never raised my voice to her at home, either. I’ve never had a reason to because I never want to. I never want to hurt her or upset her by yelling. It’s just not who I am.

(B)I get it, Merig, you’re doing great and treating her right and she treats you right, too, from what we see.

(M)Oh trust me, she treats me right. Also…we did make love last night…twice.

(B)Whoa, seriously? I guess that revelation you had, made the fire between you two all the more intense.

(L)[chuckles] I’m not even surprised at this point. Especially since you got slapped in the face with that revelation and now you know that you are worthy and deserving of Kate and her love. I’m sure you rocked each other’s world last night. I know Ash and I do just about every night. It’s absolutely amazing.

(M)It was, it’s something I’ll never forget, and I didn’t even try to quiet my overexcited laugh like I usually do.

(B)Oh god, that laugh, I remember that. Do you still do that?

(M)Well, it stopped after a while when we came to Tara, but I started doing it again the night I told Kate how I felt. When she kissed my cheek, that’s when it came out and it made her laugh. At first, I thought she was making fun of it, but it came out again when she agreed to go on a date with me. She was curious and asked me about it, and so I told her and she said it was something she loved about me, but I was still embarrassed by it. But my entire outlook on that changed when we talked last night. I embraced and accepted the fact that I deserve this woman and her love that she gives me and when we made love, my laugh came out and I just let it happen. It made her happy, and she told me she wanted to hear it again. So we made love a second time.

(L)Proud of you, pal, I’m glad you finally opened your eyes.

(B)And the closer this wedding gets, the more reality sets in for the both of you and you realize it’s actually happening.

(G)Don’t doubt yourself anymore, Merig, and only care about what Kate thinks about you. Her parents even approved of you marrying her and gave you their blessing along with that ring. Don’t take any of that for granted, you did great things to deserve it.

(M)Yeah, I guess I did. I just feel overwhelmed with happiness and excitement and not in a bad way. I really like this feeling and I hope it never goes away.

(L)Good, we want to see you happy, Merig.

(B)This is an exciting time in life, little brother.

(G)Embrace it, don’t question it.

(M)I don’t intend to, I welcome it with open arms. I’m going to marry this woman with pride and screw anyone who objects.

(L)That’s right, pal, now if you don’t mind, I have to go clean up all of those training bolts from the ground.

(M)Sorry about that, buddy, I can help you.

(B)We all can, I don’t mind.

(G)It gives me something to do.

(L)Alright, let’s go.

The goblins wrap up their break, rising from their chairs and exiting the lounge to assist Larry in clearing the training bolts from the snow-covered ground. Meanwhile, Kate, Ashley, Sarah, Joanna, and Thomas are gathered at the regular group table in the pub, enjoying lunch and each other's company on this leisurely afternoon.

(K)So how much longer are you and Dad staying in Tara?

(J)We planned on heading home tomorrow morning.

(T)So we can spend the rest of today with you if you want, pumpkin.

(K)We can, after I do some more magic training at the training grounds. I’ll be heading over there soon.

(J)Okay, dear, we won’t keep you. I plan on taking a small rest soon, anyway.

(K)Okay Mom, also I’m really glad we had that dinner last night. That ring made Merig really happy, and he hasn’t taken it off since you gave it to him. He made sure not to forget it today, and he put it on right before we left the house.

(A)Wait, they gave Merig a ring?

(T)I sure did. It was passed down to me by my grandfather. I’ve had it ever since and it meant a lot to me. Kate told us that Merig needed a wedding ring and I was more than happy to put it in good hands. It’s made from an arrowhead that belonged to my grandfather and he had it made into a ring with the iron from a sword that belonged to my father. The ring was then given to him and then my father gave it to me when I was younger.

(S)Wow, that’s amazing, so much history in one piece of jewelry, how fascinating!

(A)A family heirloom passed down to the future son-in-law. I’m sure Merig was happy to receive it from you.

(K)Oh, he was very happy, he couldn’t stop smiling when we were talking about it just before bed.

(J)I’m so glad he likes it. We were very surprised to see that it fit him like a glove.

(K)He loves it, especially since you gave it to him as a wedding ring. It means a lot to him. He was really happy that you gave him your blessing, and that you didn’t judge him because he’s a goblin.

(J)[smiles] Of course, honey, Merig is such a sweetheart and he really seems to love you. He’s so sweet to you, Kate.

(K)He really is, Mom, he’s wonderful and I couldn’t imagine being with someone else. He’s so good to me and he’s never hurt me, not once.

(T)That’s good to hear, he seems like a calm and peaceful goblin. He’s definitely worthy of our girl and good enough to marry her.

(K)He really is and I keep telling him that. But he seemed to think he wasn’t good enough for me until the dinner we had last night. I don’t know what happened to him, but his entire perspective changed and he seems happier. It’s hard to describe, but he didn’t seem to question it anymore and he didn’t doubt himself like he usually does. He even told me that he wasn’t going to doubt himself anymore and he finally realized that he’s deserving of me. I guess hearing your approval and your blessing, as well as realizing that I’m serious about marrying him, made him understand that better. He was always worried that because he’s a goblin, that he wasn’t good enough for me and that I wouldn’t love him. But I told him that he doesn’t have to be human and that I love him the way he is. Being a Fomor isn’t the worst thing in the world and he’s more human to me than some people.

(A)I’ve known him for years and that’s just how he is.

(S)He’s really kind, along with the other goblins.

(J)They’re all lovely creatures and so polite, too. The goblins back home are amazing as well.

(T)Merig will be the perfect husband for you, pumpkin.

(J)Oh, I completely agree, Tom, they’re perfect for each other. But I am curious, Kate.

(K)About what, Mom?

(J)Well, Merig isn’t here, so I figured I’d ask you how you’ve been since what happened back home.

(K)Oh right, I’ve been doing much better, actually. With as much love and kindness as Merig shows me, he’s really helped me heal. Ash has been there for me as well. Starting a new life here is exactly what I needed and I’m forgetting about all the pain I went through.

(S)Wait, what happened back home?

(K)I’ll tell you later, this happened sometime after you left for your schooling. I’d rather not bring it up in public.

(S)Of course, I completely understand.

(J)You haven’t seen him since then, have you, Kate?

(K)No, thankfully, let’s just hope I never do. If Merig ever found out about what happened to me, he would probably hunt him down, and that’s no exaggeration.

(A)I completely agree, you weren’t there after you got kidnapped and Merig went back to an empty home. The look of anger on his face was terrifying, and his eyes turned red when we realized you’d been taken. He wasn’t going to stop until he found you and he was ready to end Cormac if he didn’t let you go. That goblin is ruthless when it comes to Kate if she’s being threatened and he’ll kill anyone who harms her. He killed an ogre during that battle when it came charging at Kate with its hammer. Merig shot it in the head with an arrow without hesitation.

(S)Ogres are huge, just one arrow killed it?

(A)It sure did. I watched it happen. I was shocked, too.

(K)I was terrified when the ogre charged at me. It felt like a split second when Merig fired his arrow and killed it. It collapsed just a few feet from me and didn’t get up. That’s when Cormac shot his crossbow at me and Merig ran toward me and stood in the way of the bolt and it hit him.

(J)I still think that’s incredible and so courageous of him. But it’s still terrible that it happened.

(K)Yeah, it was, but he’s with me now and that’s something I want to put behind me.

(J)Of course, honey, nothing good comes from holding a grudge. It eats you up inside and you become bitter and angry.

(S)That doesn’t sound like Kate at all. She’s a very compassionate person, but I know she probably still feels the pain from her past.

(K)I do, but Merig makes all of that pain go away.

(J)Good, that happens when you find someone who truly loves you and shows you kindness.

(K)I’m just glad Merig understands that I love him no matter what. The whole theme of my wedding is eternal love and new beginnings. That’s why I chose the white rose for my wedding flowers and I’m hoping Merig hears that message loud and clear.

(J)I’m sure he will, sweetheart. Love works in its own way and is a powerful thing. Once someone understands the beauty of it, it can change their whole life and make them view life differently than before. And when you find someone you truly love, who loves you the same, you’ll understand it. Whether immediately or as time goes on. Remember that when you write your vows.

(K)I need to write my vows for the ceremony.

(J)Just speak from the heart. You can write it down, sure, but whatever you write, make sure it’s from within you.

(K)Of course, I’ll definitely remember that, thanks, Mom.

(J)Now you’ve got training to do, and I’d like to go back to the inn and rest for a bit if that’s okay. Like I said before, I find myself wanting to take naps ever since I got sick.

(K)No worries, Mom, you’re here till tomorrow, so I still have time to spend with you and Dad.

(A)I’ll take you two back to your inn if you want.

(J)Oh no, don’t trouble yourself, Ash.

(S)It’s no problem, I’ll help, too, we insist.

(J)You’re both such sweethearts. Only if you’re sure that you want to.

(K)I’ll see you later, then, Mom, and I’ll see you two later, Ash. If you'd like, you and Sarah can come by the training grounds when you’re done.

(A)Will do, we’ll see you later.

(K)I love you, Dad. I’ll see you later as well.

(T)I love you, too, pumpkin, go have fun practicing your magic.

(K)I definitely will.

The team rises from their chairs and proceeds towards the exit in order to depart from the pub. Ashley and Sarah accompany Joanna and Thomas back to the inn, while Kate heads in the direction of the training grounds. Upon arrival, she observes the goblins tidying up the training area and walks over to Merig with a smile. As Kate nears, Merig catches a whiff of her scent and then turns to watch her approach. The pair exchange smiles and embrace warmly before Merig leans in for a kiss.

(K)Good afternoon, my love.

(M)Hey, sweetheart, are you having fun spending time with your parents?

(K)Of course, Mom was a little tired, so she and Dad went back to the inn for a while.

(M)Understandable, we’re just cleaning up from today’s training, and we had some fun.

(K)Good, I’m glad you’re all enjoying yourselves. I figured I’d come by and train some more with Barth.

(M)Sure thing, I’ll finish helping them and you can get started.

(K)Okay, my love.

(M)I love you so much.

(K)[smiles] I love you, too.

Merig leans down, sharing another tender kiss with Kate. With a final glance at her, Merig turns and resumes his task of cleaning the training area. Kate strolls over to the resting area and finds a comfortable spot, patiently awaiting his return. As the minutes pass, the four goblins finish their cleanup and make their way to the resting area. They settle in, as Merig takes a seat beside Kate, his hand finding hers.

(L)Afternoon, Kate, how’s it going with the parents?

(K)It’s going great. Ash and Sarah went to take my parents back to the inn for the afternoon. My mother wanted to take a rest for a while, they have a long trip back home tomorrow.

(L)I don’t blame them. It’s a relaxing day, yet here we are once again training this asshat.

(B)Takes one to know one, Larry, if you wanted today off, you should’ve consulted Merig.

(M)It’s fine, we all can take the rest of the day to relax. But I’m sure you and Kate would like to have some fun with your magic training, first.

(K)That’s all up to Barth if he wants to take time out of his day.

(B)It should be fine, I’ll just take a breather, first.

(K)I completely understand. I’ll sit here with you all and talk.

(G)So when are your parents leaving tomorrow?

(K)They want to leave pretty early since it gets dark sooner than usual. But I’m really enjoying my time with them and they’ll be here a week before the wedding since my mom wants to help prepare everything. She’s even going to make the invitations herself for me and she’ll send them to me and I can personally hand them to the guests here in Tara. She’ll also be sending some to my relatives who want to attend.

(L)That’s awesome, we’ll get to meet more Blackmores. I’m sure they’re all just as lovely as you, Kate.

(K)[giggles] Of course they are. Although, there are a few on both sides who don’t exactly like the fact that I’m marrying a Fomor, but that’s okay, those are the ones who don’t get to attend my beautiful wedding.

(B)Exactly, those people don’t deserve to witness such a wonderful event.

(M)Absolutely not. They don’t have a say in our life and they sure as hell can’t tell us that we can't get married.

(K)That’s right, my love, I’m an adult and I get to marry whoever I please. I’m not hurting anyone by marrying a goblin, but you can’t please everyone, sadly.

(L)Yeah, screw ‘em, you have a ton of people who support you and Merig. And if your family, of all people, can't support you, then you don’t need them in your life.

(K)You’re right, but it does hurt that they don’t support me. But at the same time, they don’t have to be in my life if they feel that way. That’s their problem if they don’t want anything to do with Merig because he’s going to be my husband whether they like it or not. And no matter what they think or say, they’re not going to make me change my mind. And if they want nothing to do with Merig, then I don’t want anything to do with them.

(B)Hell yeah, sis, that’s the spirit! You tell 'em!

(K)I’ve already told that to a few people.

(M)If they want to try to stop me from marrying you, then they can do it over my dead body.

(L)Maybe not the best metaphor, but yes, I agree.

(K)It’s fine, Larry, I actually feel the same way. Look, you guys don’t need to walk on eggshells around me. I’m not letting the past affect me during the happiest time of my life.

(L)Good, 'cause we wouldn’t want you to be depressed for your wedding, Kate.

(G)We’re glad you’re doing better and we’re still going to be here to help you if you need it.

(B)You bet your ass, we will. If my sister-in-law isn’t happy, then I’m not happy. If your family has a problem, then they can take it up with your big brother-in-law, Barth. They’ll have a real problem on their hands, then. But Merig is your biggest support out of all of us.

(M)That’s right, I won’t let anyone ruin our wedding. I know I’ve said before that I felt bad because I didn’t want you to have to choose between me or your family, because it would be unfair to you. But that’s changed and I don’t feel bad about it anymore.

(K)Good, because I’d choose you over anyone and you damn well know it, Merig.

(M)I know that’s why I don’t feel so bad about it. I’m just glad your parents gave me their blessing because they are the only people in your family whose opinion matters to me, besides you. I don’t care about anyone else’s opinion, they can kiss my goblin ass.

(L)[laughs] That’s our Merig and his solid gold spine! I love that you’re finally coming to your senses, pal. Also, you should be careful. If you keep talking like that, Kate just might take you home and have her way with you.

Kate shifts her gaze towards Merig, her cheeks flushing with color, and a broad smile spreads across her face. She scoots closer to him, nestling against him. She tenderly takes hold of Merig before placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. In response, Merig blushes and turns to face Kate. They exchange smiles while locking eyes, as Kate speaks in a teasing and alluring tone.

(K)[giggles] He’s not wrong, my love. You’re making me fall in love with you all over again, enough to make me melt in your arms in this freezing cold weather.

(M)That’s the idea, my dear. I have to keep your heart from escaping the hollow of my hands, otherwise, I can’t keep it warm.

(K)[smiles] Trust me, you keep myself and my heart plenty warm, you don’t even have to try. My heart isn’t going anywhere, as long as you’re here with me. And when we get married, it will belong to you forever.

(M)As will my heart belong to you, my moon.

They exchange another smile, their eyes sparkling with passion and longing as they gaze into each other's souls. Merig tenderly cradles Kate's chin, lifting it, and leans in for a soft kiss. His fingers from his other hand brushes against her cheek. Meanwhile, Barth glances over at the pair, a playful smirk spreading across his face as he lets out a lighthearted chuckle, ready to tease them with a witty remark.

(B)You sure you don’t want to reschedule this training session, sis? You two seem like you could use some alone time.

(K)[giggles] Sorry about that, Barth. We can go ahead and get started if you want.

(B)Don’t be sorry, you two have every right to be happy and affectionate with each other.

(G)He’s right, you can always take a day or two, just for the both of you to spend time together.

(K)I wouldn’t want to take up Merig’s time like that. He has more important things to do than to stay home with me.

(M)Hey, you’re part of the important things in my life, sweetheart. If anything, you’re the most important out of the other things I do every day.

(L)He’s got a point, Kate, spend as much time as you can with each other. He has the authority to give himself time off from his duties, so take advantage of that as much as you can.

(K)[sigh] The goblins are right again.

(M)Hey, we can be very smart creatures if people give us the chance.

(G)Yeah, but some of us give the rest of us a bad name.

(K)Well, I know that not all of you are like that, Gordo, and that's because I spend every day with you guys and I'm about to get married to a goblin. So I actually understand, unlike some humans.

(B)We know you do, sis. That's why we love you.

(K)I love you all, too.

(B)Well, I've rested up. We can get started if you’d like. We can practice that lightning spell I taught you the other day.

(K)Hell yeah, let's do this.

Kate and Barth rise from their seats, their shared laughter lingering in the air as they walk towards the training area. They come to a halt in front of the training dummies, their bodies turned to face each other. A determined look crosses Kate's face as she meets Barth's gaze, a warm smile playing on her lips. Barth returns her smile as he begins to speak.

(B)So you remember what to do, right?

(K)Yep, I sure do.

(B)Now this time, you're here to train me as well, as we talked about. Are you okay with that?

(K)Absolutely, Barth, it's not just me training, remember?

(B)Of course, and knowing you, you'll be a brilliant teacher, too.

(K)Don’t give me too much credit, you've helped me more than I've helped you.

(B)That doesn't mean you won't be of any help, sis. Thanks to Merig training me like he has, I realized my basic spells needed mastering, except for my lightning spells. And you’re nice enough to help me with them.

(K)Well, there is something that can help you with your casting speed. It’s something my dad taught me that I can teach you.

(B)Oh? What’s that?

(K)It’s a spell that can charge your spells faster. It’s called snap casting. It will help you fully charge your spells faster.

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

(B)I’ve never heard of that, but it does sound useful. But I’m also lacking in accuracy, my casting speed is getting better, I just need better aim to hit the target. Merig has been shooting training bolts as moving targets to help me.

(K)There’s your problem right there. You don’t need moving targets, just use the archer targets that Merig uses. If you’d like to train your accuracy, then practicing with an actual target will help you better.

(B)You know what? You’re absolutely right, sis. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I actually feel really stupid, now, Merig!

(M)Hey don’t blame me, you’re the one that said you wanted moving targets, big brother! I told you that you didn’t need them! But no, you didn’t listen to your little brother, did you?!

(B)Yeah, yeah![sigh] Alright, let’s go over to the range targets, then.

(K)Alright, let's go.

Kate offers Barth a reassuring smile before they both stride towards the archer targets positioned on the opposite side of the training dummies. Reaching the range, they each select a target and establish a suitable distance. Turning to face each other, they prepare for the training session. Kate takes the initiative, her voice firm but encouraging as she begins to instruct Barth.

(K)So you said you wanted to train your basic ice and fire spells, right?

(B)That’s right. So these targets will help me, right?

(K)Yep, watch.

Kate shifts her gaze towards her objective, concentrating intently as she readies herself to unleash her magical abilities. With precision, she lifts her right hand, joining her thumb and middle finger before snapping them together, imbuing her ice bolt with power in a mere moment. The projectile hurtles through the air, striking the target dead center with pinpoint accuracy. Barth observes the spectacle, his eyes widening in amazement as he turns to Kate, his expression a mix of shock and awe.

(B)Damn, that was awesome. How do you do that?

(K)Easy, just snap your fingers and charge any of your spells immediately. It’s all about willpower, so it might take a bit to get the hang of it.

(B)Sounds like something I can do, here I’ll try it.

(K)You got this, Barth.

Barth nods enthusiastically and flashes a smile before turning to face his chosen target. He takes a deep breath and raises his hand. He focuses on charging his ice spell, his thumb, and middle finger poised in the familiar gesture. With a swift snap of his fingers, he attempts to unleash the magic, but nothing happens. His expression falters, confusion etched on his face as he stands there, frozen in surprise.

(B)Damnit, let me try that again.

Barth's frustration grows as he attempts to cast the spell again, his fingers snapping with increased urgency, but still, nothing happens. His annoyance mounts with each failed attempt, yet he persists, determination etched on his face. Kate observes his struggles, her expression softening with concern as she witnesses his repeated failures. Finally, Barth halts, his shoulders slumping in defeat, his face a picture of disappointment and irritation.

(B)Come on, I can do this!

(K)Just calm your mind. Don’t think about it too hard or you’ll end up getting more frustrated.

(B)[sigh] Alright I’m sorry, sis, I’m not mad at you. I’ll keep trying if I have to.

(K)Don’t worry about it, luckily this technique doesn’t use up your mana, so try casting without using it, but you have to be quick about it.

(B)Okay, I’ll try again.

Barth straightens his posture, shutting his eyes as he inhales deeply, allowing a moment of tranquility to wash over him. When he opens his eyes, determination fills his gaze as he locks onto the target. With a decisive snap of his fingers, he channels more energy this time. To his astonishment, his ice spell surges to its maximum strength, and he exchanges a thrilled smile with Kate. Turning back to the target, he steadies his aim and releases the spell, watching it soar through the air. It strikes the target, landing just shy of the bullseye.

(B)I did it, sis, Look! I didn’t quite hit the bullseye but hey, I snap casted so I’m happy about that.

(K)Well done, you did it, Barth! And that’s okay, you hit it close enough and hey, I taught you something today. Maybe I am an excellent teacher like you.

(B)You did an amazing job teaching me this new skill. Thank you, sis.

(K)[smiles] Of course, that’s what I’m here for. You can keep practicing your snap casting, it will help you with your casting speed and you can practice your accuracy here at the targets.

(B)This makes my daily training a lot easier. I’ll try it again and use a fire spell this time.

Barth pivots towards the target, inhaling deeply before snapping his fingers once more, channeling all his energy into the fire spell. With a shared look of anticipation, he and Kate exchange smiles before Barth unleashes the fiery projectile, hitting the bullseye dead on. Their faces light up with joy as they celebrate Barth's newfound skill, embracing each other in a warm hug.

(B)I did it! I hit the bullseye, and I snap casted again. This is amazing, I want to keep at it.

(K)You did, I’m so proud of you, Barth! Keep doing it as much as you want and your mana won’t deplete.

(B)Thank you so much, Kate, I love learning new things and you taught me this, I won’t forget it, sis.

(K)Anytime, big brother-in-law Barth.

(B)[chuckles] I realize that’s a mouth full to say, just my name should be fine.

(K)[giggles] I’ll remember that. If you’d like, you and I can have some fun just shooting our spells at these targets. But I don’t want to make it hard for Larry to clean up later.

(B)It’ll be fine, that’s what the training grounds are for. Right, Larry?!

(L)Have at it! Looks like you two are having fun. It’s a relaxing day, remember?!

(K)Alright, then let’s have some fun.

(B)Hell yeah.

The pair each focus on their individual targets, preparing to unleash their fire and ice spells before launching them. Utilizing their snap-casting ability, they expedite the charging process and appear to be enjoying themselves. Meanwhile, the rest of the goblins observe from the sidelines, offering their enthusiastic support. Eventually, a familiar figure arrives at the training grounds and heads in the direction of Kate and Barth. Larry notices the figure and signals to Merig, directing his attention towards them.

(L)Hey Merig, someone just walked in. I think it’s Cormac.

Merig springs to his feet, curiosity piqued as he glances toward the entrance of the training grounds. His eyes land on Cormac, who strides confidently toward Kate and Barth, both still focused on their targets. With a sense of urgency, Merig abandons the resting area and strides purposefully toward the targets, his voice booming as he shouts at Cormac. His words echo across the training grounds as he closes in.

(M)What the hell do you want, Cormac?!

Kate and Barth absorbed in their training, remain oblivious to the commotion behind them until Merig's thunderous shout pierces the air. They spin around to find Cormac standing mere feet away, his presence met with Barth's instantaneous scowl. With a protective instinct, Barth swiftly positions himself between Cormac and Kate, his body language a clear warning to keep his distance. Cormac, sensing the hostility, halts his approach, his eyes locked on Barth. In a low, growling, and irate tone, Barth speaks, words laced with fierce protectiveness.

(B)Back again, are we? You’re persistent, Cormac, you know that?

(C)Listen, I just want to talk.

(M)Why do you want to talk to Kate so badly?

(C)I told you, I just want to ask for forgiveness, that’s all.

(B)Do you ever stop and think that maybe she’s not ready to forgive you?

(C)You never know until you ask. No harm in trying, right?

(M)Maybe, maybe not. Kate, what do you think, sweetheart?

Larry and Gordo burst into action, their bodies propelling them towards the growing tension. They arrive at the group, their faces etched with concern and stand on each side of Merig, whose arms remain crossed. His stance is defiant as their collective glare intensifies on Cormac. Kate, with a newfound resolve, steps out from behind Barth. Her approach is deliberate, her eyes locked onto Cormac's. A scowl contorts her features as she faces him, her mind racing.

(K)It’s fine, my love, I’m not afraid anymore.

(M)Alright, sweetheart. Go on, Cormac, since you’re so eager, I’m sure you already know what you want to say to my fiancée.

(C)As a matter of fact, I do. I’ve taken these past few months to really think about what I want to say to you, Kate. I’ll start off by admitting that I let my emotions get the better of me and I took things too far. I told you back at the camp when you were brought to me, that a human gave me this scar on my face and that’s completely true. To make a long story short, I trusted this human, and he claimed to be my friend and claimed that he accepted Fomors into society. In fact, we lived in Taill. That’s where I’m from, just like you, Kate. One night, we were deep in the forest fighting a group of bandits together and one bandit attacked my friend from behind and ended up killing him with a sword. I was devastated, and I thought I’d lost him, but I remembered that he had given me a revival stone and I used it on him, similar to the one that’s in your necklace, Kate. When he came back, he accused me of being the one who conspired with the bandits, because I didn’t stop them from killing him. I tried telling him that I had nothing to do with it, but he didn’t believe me. He called me all kinds of names and said that I was just another filthy Fomor like those bandits. He said he lied to me about being a friend and that he secretly hated Fomors and was convinced that I was one of those bandits. He then took his sword and raised it to me and started fighting me with it. I didn’t want to fight him because, despite what he said, I didn’t want to hurt him. I lost the fight, and he had me on the ground. With his sword pointed at my face, he pushed the sword as hard as he could into my chin and slashed my face in an upward motion. He ended up cutting me from my chin to my forehead and I cried out because it hurt and I bled so much. I realized he wasn’t the person I thought he was, and I knew I had to fight him. The bandits took up for me and protected me from any further harm and even came to my aid to stop my bleeding. After the bandits took care of me, I tried going back to my home in Taill, but I was run out by the citizens. The man that I thought was my friend had spread lies in the town and made me out to be the villain. He even told them that I was the one who ordered the bandits to kill him and it was no use trying to defend myself and I had to leave the city and I was ultimately exiled. The same group of bandits offered me sanctuary with them, the same group of bandits where I met Larry and Gordo. And later on, we met Merig and Barth when they joined the camp.

(K)I’m sorry that happened to you, Cormac, that wasn’t fair to you and I’m sure that’s why you hate humans so much.

(C)No, I don’t hate humans. I resent them, but all that has faded. I know that you’re nothing like that human that hurt me, Kate. You’re about to become a wife to Merig, a goblin, so you obviously accept Fomors into society and treat them as if they were your own fellow humans, as long as they are peaceful and coexist with you. But I thought of Merig and the others as family because they didn’t hurt me. So I grew to love them as such and when they left the camp, it really hurt. It hurt as bad as it did when I was betrayed by that human, whom I also loved as family. I took my pain out on the people I still care about and I even ended one of their lives because I attempted to end the life of someone he loves. I put all the bandits through hell, and as a leader, I made them do unspeakable things. I even commanded Gordo to kidnap you and lock you in a cell. Barth never did anything under my command, I swear it, and he never wanted me to help carry out my revenge and he even tried stopping me while he watched over you and Merig.

(K)I know. Barth told me when he was in hiding, and we met a few times. He made me promise not to tell Merig and I feel terrible for hiding that from you, my love.

(M)None of that matters now, sweetheart. I understand why you did it, and I’m not mad at you or Barth.

(B)Despite my warnings, you still carried out your revenge, Cormac.

(C)I know, and I was desperate to do so, and I even threatened your life, Kate, but Merig sacrificed his own to spare yours. At the time, I was consumed by anger, pain, and hatred and I wanted to inflict pain on others to soothe my own and I took Merig’s life. Seeing you holding him as he died in your arms while you mourned for him, made me realize what I had done. In all my hatred for humans, your life meant nothing to me at the time, but it meant the world to Merig, and that’s why he protected you. I saw that necklace you have and recognized the stone in it. That’s why I advised you to use it to revive Merig. I realized how much you truly love him when he died and when you brought him back to life. His revival didn’t erase the guilt that I still have for carrying out such an act and the anger I had vanished that night. I hurt someone that I cared about because I was blinded by anger and pain and I took that pain out on others. I’m aware of my wrongdoings and I’ve come to formally ask you for forgiveness. Not just from you, Kate, but to everyone here that I affected with my actions that night and over the past ten years. Barth, Merig, Larry, Gordo, you’re like brothers to me and I hurt all of you in some way.

(L)You hurt Merig the most out of us goblins, and Barth almost lost a blood brother.

(B)Lucky for you, he’s alive, or you wouldn’t be.

(G)I did everything to earn Kate and Merig’s forgiveness and trust. What makes you think a mere apology will make any of us forgive you?

(C)I don’t expect it to, but it would lessen my burden greatly by doing the right thing and apologizing. You don’t have to forgive me yet, but knowing that I came here and said my piece and you hearing me out, makes me feel better. But not about what I did, because I still feel like shit.

(M)Good, as you should, you betrayed us just as that human betrayed you.

(L) Do You think apologizing will make you feel better about yourself? Like Gordo said, just an apology won’t cut it, especially not after everything you did.

(B)Remember what I said that night? You’d have to get on your knees and beg for forgiveness. Knowing you, I’m not sure that’s something you’d want to do, Cormac.

(L)Unless you really have changed.

(C)[sigh] The truth is…I’ve been living here in the city, I’m no longer a bandit. I left the camp at the beginning of winter and I’ve been residing in Tara since then.

(M)Why haven’t we seen you around until the day you showed up at the pub?

(C)Because I practically isolated myself and I only go to the pub when you all aren’t there so that you don’t think I’m bothering you. I live alone. None of the bandits came with me to the city since the ones that chose to, already left not long after the battle. Since then, I’ve been thinking about what I have done in the past decade and that night. I truly regret everything and I let my mind be poisoned, and I poisoned everyone around me, not caring about who got hurt. I’ve wanted so badly to come up to you guys and talk, but I was too afraid and ashamed. I’ve seen Merig and Kate in public and I see how happy you two are and I realized I almost destroyed that happiness and it has caused Kate great anguish, as well as the rest of you. All I wanted was to be with my brothers again and I went about it all wrong. I should’ve trusted you and Larry and made a life here a long time ago. But the betrayal of that human from a long time ago clouded my judgment of other humans who are nothing like him and meeting Kate proved that. Yet I still carried out my heinous acts, and I’m truly remorseful.

Cormac falls silent for a brief moment, maintaining his stance in front of the group. He then gazes down at the ground, before eventually dropping to his knees before Kate. The other goblins, including Kate, are taken aback by this unexpected action. Kate's scowl softens into a look of compassion as she observes Cormac's display. The rest of the goblins wear expressions of astonishment as they watch Cormac's gesture. Finally, Cormac lifts his gaze to meet Kate's eyes, his face reflecting a sense of remorse as he begins to speak.

(C)I’m so sorry, Kate, I’m sorry that I almost took away your happiness and the person that means so much to you and I’m sorry that you struggled emotionally because of everything I did. I’m sorry to you Merig, for causing so much chaos for you and Kate, as well as Larry and Ashley and everyone in Tara and the Royal Guards. I’m sorry for hurting Kate and taking Merig’s life because you’re someone I truly care about. Barth, Gordo, I’m sorry for making your life hell all those years and holding you hostage in the camp. Gordo, I made you kidnap Kate, who was innocent in all of this and she got hurt. And Barth, I’m sorry that I killed your brother and caused you pain and threatened you and everyone else. I’m sorry that I caused all of you pain and anguish and I wish I could take it all back, but I know that I can’t and I know you hate me for it. You don’t have to forgive me. I just wanted to personally apologize and for you to hear how sorry I am. If there’s anything I can do to make it up to you, I’ll do it.

Kate's gaze remains fixed on Cormac as he spills out a torrent of apologies, his voice laced with desperation. He seeks forgiveness not only from her but from the entire group. Gathering his strength, Cormac rises to his feet, his eyes meeting Kate's. Her expression, once tinged with pity, hardens into a familiar scowl. As seconds tick by, her eyes well up with tears as she approaches Cormac. With a sudden, forceful movement, she raises her right hand and delivers a stinging slap to Cormac's face. His head snaps to the side, his eyes widening in shock as he turns back to face her, tears now streaming down her face.

(C)[sigh] I know I deserved that and if that's what you feel you need to do, then I won't fight back.

Kate's rage intensifies as she seizes Cormac by the collar, her left hand a vice-like grip. Her right fist clenches, a deadly weapon poised for impact. With a swift motion, she delivers a powerful blow to Cormac's face. He stumbles backward, his hand instinctively flying to cradle his throbbing jaw, but his resolve remains unbroken. The other goblins, their eyes wide with disbelief, can only watch in astonishment as the scene unfolds. Kate, fueled by a burning fury, closes the distance between them. Another fist connects, this time to Cormac's gut. The impact forces the wind from his lungs, sending him crashing to his knees in the snow.

(B)Holy shit, sis!

(L)Well damn, I did not expect that.

(G)Nice punch, Kate, I'm impressed.

(M)He definitely deserved that.

(K)Oh, I’m not done with him, yet.

Moments later, Sarah and Ashley arrive on the scene. They spot the group near the range targets gathered around Cormac, who remains on his knees, wincing in agony. Their eyes are drawn to Kate, her expression fierce as she looms over Cormac, her fist clenched tightly. Sarah and Ashley exchange a brief look filled with concern before the two dash forward to uncover the unfolding drama.

(A)Hey, what’s going on?

(L)Hey, sweetheart, Cormac stopped by and was just begging Kate for her forgiveness. First, she slapped him, then she punched him in the face and then his gut. It was great.

(S)[gasp] Is that the goblin that showed up at the pub that day Kate had a panic attack?

(A)Yeah, that’s him. He’s the boss bandit from that battle we told you about.

(L)Well, not anymore.

(S)I see, so he came to apologize?

(B)Yep, and he apologized, and then this happened, completely unexpected.

(A)Are you alright, Kate?

(K)I'm fine, I'm just letting out all of this frustration that I've been harboring.

(M)Just don't hurt yourself, sweetheart.

(K)Oh trust me, I’m fine, my love.

Kate gazes down at Cormac, who is on his hands and knees on the ground. He’s clutching his belly, struggling to breathe as he coughs violently. He manages to rise, sitting on his knees, looking up at Kate just as she raises her fist once more. With a swift motion, she lands a punch squarely to his face once more, sending him crashing into the snow, wracked with pain. Ashley and Sarah watch in shock, their breaths caught in their throats, as Kate lifts her cloak and dress slightly, preparing to strike again. She delivers a brutal kick to Cormac's stomach, forcing the air from his lungs. Releasing her garments, she begins to summon her lightning bolt spell, looming over Cormac as he gasps and groans in agony. Tears stream down Kate’s furious face as she raises her hand, poised to unleash her magic. Cormac, now staring up at her with terror etched in his features, remains motionless, eyes shut tight, bracing for the worst. In that moment, Kate notices the fear in his eyes, and her expression shifts from rage to shock. Realizing the gravity of her actions, she hesitates, lowering her hand as the crackling energy dissipates into the air.

(K)I can't do it, I can't bring myself to stoop this low. I'd be just as bad of a person if I did. I don't like hurting anyone, even if they hurt me. I feel terrible about what I've done already.

Kate trembles uncontrollably, removing her glasses from her face as she bursts into tears. She takes one of her hands and cradles her face in despair, covering her eyes. The weight of her actions crashes down on her in that moment of realization. After a brief pause, she lowers her hand, using the fabric of her cloak to wipe away the tears that her palm collected from her cheeks and eyes. She then steps back, trying to regain her composure, but a wave of emotions washes over her, causing her to panic and hyperventilate. Turning herself to look at Merig, she takes tentative steps in his direction. With open arms, Merig welcomes her, enveloping her in a tight embrace as she collapses against him, sobbing freely. Meanwhile, the rest of the group shifts their focus back to Cormac, who is slowly regaining his breath. He struggles to rise from the ground with a bloodied nose. Merig continues to hold Kate close, whispering soothing words to her as she weeps, seeking comfort in his presence.

(M)Everything’s going to be okay, sweetheart, I’m here.

(B)You know, I’m impressed that you actually got on your knees and begged for Kate's forgiveness. Knowing you, I honestly didn’t think you would do that, Cormac. So how did it feel getting a taste of your own medicine?

(C)[grunts] I know, I deserved all of that and I’ll gladly accept it.

(L)I honestly didn’t think Kate would do something like that. She’s not a fighter, so I’m actually shocked. But at the same time, I don’t blame her one bit.

(G)Me either, I would’ve done the same. But knowing Kate, she feels guilty for doing it.

(M)But she has nothing to feel guilty about, right Cormac?

(C)Right, you have nothing to feel guilty for, Kate, and I accept that beating.

(A)So you came to apologize for what you did, huh? So what was your reasoning for doing all those horrible things?

(B)Apparently, a human turned against him after Cormac saved his life from bandits and brought him back using a revival stone, the one similar to what Kate has on her necklace. The man thought Cormac had something to do with killing him and he became hostile and gave Cormac that scar on his face. Turns out the human hated Fomors and wanted a reason to get his revenge on Cormac for something he didn’t do. He joined the bandits that we were a part of because he was exiled back from the town where you and Kate are from.

(L)I understand you were hurt and betrayed by a human you called a friend. But there’s honestly no excuse for what you did, Cormac.

(C)I understand that, which is why I came here.

(M)A crime like that wouldn't exactly be easy to forgive.

(B)At the same time, had you not said anything about the revival stone in Kate's necklace, Merig wouldn't still be here. But that doesn't exactly fully redeem you, either.

(L)Merig, being alive doesn't erase anything you did.

(A)It still happened and poor Kate suffered the aftermath. My sweet and dearest best friend battled with her own mind, and we all helped her because we couldn't sit by and watch her become depressed when normally, she's the most happy-go-lucky person we know and love.

(B)We supported her and prevented her from becoming just a mere shell of her former self.

(M)And despite all of that, I never once left her side or even thought about it and I never loved her any less. I even asked her to marry me, because she's still the woman I love. Luckily, she could still smile every day and enjoy life with me and everyone else here. I held her when she cried at night from the nightmares because I love her and I didn't want to see her suffer.

(G)We're glad she's getting better, and she was so happy when Merig proposed to her. She's very excited about her and Merig's wedding, which I'm proud to be a part of.

(L)Everyone here is proud to be a part of it and neither Kate nor Merig need the stress while they're preparing for it.

(C)I understand, I just wanted to try to make things right. Listen, I know you'll probably never forgive me and that's okay and I know I'll most likely be alone for the rest of my life and I honestly deserve it. I understand how much I hurt you, Kate, and it's really been eating at me and I've been spiraling. I don't know what else I can say other than, I'm sorry. I got on my knees and apologized. What more do you want me to do? I'll do it. Nothing excuses what I did and I'm ready to make up for things and become a better person and live in peace with humans again, something I should've done a long time ago.

Kate's sobs subside as she pulls away from Merig, looking up at him with tears still shining in her eyes. Merig gazes down at her with a gentle smile, his hands tenderly caressing her cheeks to dry her tears. Kate's face softens into a smile as Merig leans down, his lips brushing against hers in a soft, comforting kiss. She pulls back, replaces her glasses, and turns to face Cormac, her expression apologetic. With a hesitant step, Kate approaches Cormac, her eyes fixed on his bloody face, her gaze filled with remorse.

(K)I was raised to be the person that I am. Kind, compassionate, loving, accepting, sympathetic, empathetic, and everything else other people say and think that I am. I try really hard to forgive those who have hurt me, and I can't bring myself to hurt others because that's not who I am, until today. Again, I'm sorry that you were hurt by that human. What he did was cruel, and you didn't deserve it. But you were no better than that human and we didn't deserve what you did to us and you hurt us. What exactly was any of it going to solve? Did you think hurting others was going to heal your pain? What did it do for you to exact revenge on the people that you thought hurt you when all they did was better their lives? Despite what you did, my heart goes out to you for being hurt by someone you cared about because I know exactly what that’s like. Neither of us deserved it, but neither did the people that you hurt to try to remedy your own pain from the past. While I did say that forgiveness was possible, I also said you'd have to better yourself. Gordo is right, an apology isn't the only way you're going to redeem yourself and I’m not the only person you owe it to.

(C)I know that and I was wrong. I was selfish, and I only cared about my own pain and happiness and I realized that a long time ago. The night everything happened, I snapped out of it and I opened my eyes to what I had done.[sigh] I’ve given up my old ways and now I’m here and living peacefully with humans. You all were right. I’ve been treated with kindness by most of the people I’ve met. Only a few have been standoffish, but that doesn’t bother me. The bandits that left know that I’m here and I’ve hung out with them and apologized to them as well. I just figured it would only be right to do the same with you all. I shouldn’t have let that one experience with that human change how I perceived all humans and moved on from what happened. I just didn’t know how. Merig and all the others in the camp helped me heal, but I let myself be corrupted with hate towards humans and I shouldn’t have. Meeting you gave me a glimmer of hope that there was still good in humanity.

(K)I’m glad you realized all of that, and that you’ve changed your ways of living. None of us can erase the past, I know that. I’m healing well and we’re all just glad that Merig is alive and that we’re getting married soon. It’s been rough, but I’m lucky enough to have such wonderful people in my life and not all of them are human, and that’s okay. Merig just recently understood just how much I love him just the way he is and he doesn’t have to be human for me to love him. I love that goblin so much and being his wife will be the best thing to ever happen to me because I wouldn’t want to marry anyone else, not even another human.

(C)I’m happy for you both, truly I am. You deserve each other. Merig is a good person and so are you. I’m also glad he’s alive and if I could erase it all, I would and save you the pain. It’s good that you’re healing and I wish nothing but the best for you. Differences in people can either bring love or hate and I wish everyone was open-minded like you, Kate. The world would be a better place. Like I said, if there’s anything I can do to make up for everything, I’ll gladly do it. I agree with Gordo as well. I understand my apology is only the beginning of a long road to forgiveness. I’m willing to take that journey if you’ll allow me to. I’m sure everyone here, your parents and even the queen, hates me and it’s a wonder how I don’t have a warrant out for me.

(M)That’s thanks to me because I decided not to pursue any action against you for what you did. I probably should have, but I do still care about you, Cormac, despite everything. I learned to be forgiving and compassionate from Kate. She’s been an enormous influence on me and others. She’s also been my support and was there for me when I went through my own problems, and she still does. My death made me not take life for granted and Kate gave me a second chance to live it. I realized that I didn’t want to leave this world because that would mean pain and misery for Kate. I want none of that for her, and I’ve been spending as much time with her as possible. I proposed to her so that we could spend the rest of our lives together. It’s completely up to Kate if she wants to try to forgive you, but none of us can or will force her to do so.

(C)I know that and I’d get back on my knees and take another beating if that’s what it takes.

(G)I’d definitely like to see that again. But seeing how Kate felt bad doing it the first time, I doubt she’ll do it again.

(L)I can do it for her and she can live vicariously through me.

(B)I remember we gave him a good beating the night of the battle and I’d like to do it again. I have this itch to punch you in the face like Merig did. What do you think, sis?

(K)No, I think I’ve done enough damage.

Kate moves closer to Cormac, her fingers deftly searching through her cloak pocket until she retrieves a piece of cloth. With a graceful motion, she kneels in the snow, gathering a handful of the cold, white flakes and wrapping them in the fabric, soaking it through. As she channels her fire spell, she holds the cloth full of snow above the flames, watching as the heat transforms it into warm water. Once the cloth is sufficiently damp, she wrings it out onto the ground and rises to her feet. With gentle determination, Kate begins to wipe away the blood from Cormac’s face, carefully tending to the wound she had inflicted. Cormac, bewildered by her unexpected kindness, remains still, allowing her to work. After she finishes, his face is clean, and she uses a portion of her cloak to dry the area, ensuring he won’t suffer from the biting cold.

(C)You didn't have to do that, you know.

(K)I know, but the blood would have frozen up if I didn't.

(C)Thank you, but why?

(G)It's simple, that’s just who Kate is. She's compassionate, sympathetic, empathetic, kind, caring, and more, just like she said. I asked the same question the other day as to why she forgave me. Because I actually put forth effort and showed her how sorry I was for what I did. She made me understand how pure and big her heart is and I’m grateful for her. She really is a one-of-a-kind human.

(B)Agreed and I’ll be proud to call her my sister-in-law.

(L)She’s made us and a lot of other people happy and we all love her.

(A)If only you knew her like I did. She’s been that way. Even as kids, she had a heart of gold.

(S)She was always nice to me, especially when I got bullied by other kids. She and Ash were my only friends, and she even invited me to her house when she and Ash would have sleepovers and we had a lot of fun.

(M)Her beauty may have been the first thing to make me fall in love with her, but it wasn't the only thing. It was also her wonderful personality and her willingness to help others. And most of all, the fact that she has the love for me that she does and the fact that she never once cared about what I am. She fell in love with me and loves me for me and doesn't care about what I look like.

(L)Kate has made an impact on everyone she's met, including the queen herself. She continues to make an impact on us, the people closest to her.

(C)I'll be honest, you've made an impact on me as well, Kate. You purified my tainted heart and made me change my ways. Even after everything, you still showed me kindness and cleaned the blood from my face, even though I deserved the beating. You also feel bad for the beating you gave me, even though you shouldn't. If I have to take more of it, I will, if that's what it would take for you to forgive me. I'm determined to make things right.

Kate's apologetic expression slowly gives way to a soft, gentle smile as she looks at Cormac. She opens her arms, inviting him in, and rises onto her toes, reaching for a hug. She wraps her arms around Cormac, enveloping him in a warm embrace. Cormac's eyes widen in surprise, his body frozen in stunned silence as he struggles to process Kate's unexpected gesture. He stands there, unmoving, as Kate holds him, her arms a testament to her sincerity and remorse.

(M)You're lucky. Kate's hugs are one of a kind, Cormac. If you don't hug her back, you'll hurt her feelings.

(B)Kate's hugs are the real magic she wields.

(G)They change lives and save them. I know her hugs changed my life.

(L)Don't pass up this opportunity, Cormac, it's a priceless treasure you don't want to take for granted.

(S)Her hugs fill me with joy every time.

(A)They're the best in this world. They always helped me during hardships.

As the rest of the group shares their testimonies, Cormac's face slowly breaks into a warm smile. He takes a moment to reflect, then tentatively wraps his arms around Kate, returning her embrace with equal warmth and compassion. A single tear escapes his eye, rolling down his cheek as the two hug each other. As they pull away, Cormac quickly wipes the tear from his face. Kate gazes up at him, her smile still radiant, and Cormac meets her gaze, his own smile mirroring hers. He takes a deep breath, composing himself, before speaking in a voice filled with emotion.

(C)I'm so sorry, Kate, for everything. Please, let me make things right. I'm sorry I caused you pain and you can hate me for it. I won't blame you.

(K)Lucky for you, I don't hate anyone. I'm thankful I have people in my life that helped me heal my pain. Maybe you can, too. I was too afraid to face you at first, but I saw how much courage you had to try to reach out and approach me. I knew I had to face you, but I didn’t expect you to show up at the pub and I didn’t expect to see you and I didn’t expect to react the way that I did. I guess the pain of that night came back to haunt me when I saw you and I’m sorry that I couldn’t face you, then.

(C)Don’t even worry about it, you have nothing to be sorry for. I caught you by surprise and I should’ve announced my presence instead of hiding my face. I’d be more than willing to help you heal as well since I’m the one who inflicted that pain on you, so it should be my responsibility as well. That’s why I wasn’t afraid to try to talk to you and I was ready to get on my knees and apologize. Whatever it takes for you to forgive me, to see you happy, and for everyone else to forgive me.

(M)That won’t be a simple task, I hope you know that.

(C)I’m aware and I’m not worried about it. You all know how I was when you all met me and I realized that the person that hurt you all wasn’t me, but a part of me that harbored a lot of negative emotions because of my past. But none of that excuses my actions and I’m no longer that person and I have no more intentions of harming anyone.

(B)So we have the old Cormac back, huh? I guess that’s a good thing. But Merig is right, forgiving you won’t be easy, but I’m glad that you’ve changed and you’re willing to redeem yourself.

(L)Agreed, I can get on board with that. Deep down, I still care about you, and I’m willing to move on. But I’ll never forget what you did to my best friend. At the same time, I won’t hold a grudge like you did. It would only hurt people, and me, if I did.

(G)As long as it’s what Kate wants, I support her decision. It won’t be easy for me, considering what you put me through.

(C)I’m sorry, Gordo, I remember when you tried convincing me that what I was doing wasn’t right at that time and that you were done being a bandit. I should’ve listened to you and we could’ve come here and lived a better life.

(G)I remember, and I even told Kate all of that when I locked her in that cell. She sympathized with me and welcomed me here with open arms. I’m forever grateful to her that she forgave me and I’m dedicated to protecting the city. I’m not the goblin I used to be, either.

(M)Seeing as you threatened and hurt the woman I love who’s about to be my wife and that I died in her arms at the hands of you. It’ll be especially difficult for me to forgive you…but not impossible.

(C)Do with me what you will, and don’t hold back. I won’t retaliate. Break every bone in my body. If that’s what it takes, I won’t stop you.

(A)It won't be easy for me to forgive you, either, since you hurt my best friend. She’s like a sister to me, so you can bet your ass I won’t go easy on you. But like Gordo said, as long as it’s what Kate wants, then I’m on board, too.

(B)I guess we’re all in agreement on this. Sis? Your word is gospel here, you get the final say.

(K)I can tell you’re sincere, Cormac, and you’ve proven to me your willingness to better yourself. I had no idea that you came here to live in peace, and I commend you for it. Everything you said came from the heart and I can see the remorse in your eyes and that you’re a good person deep down. I’ve always been able to sense the good in people and despite what you did, I can tell that wasn’t the true you and that you’re just a troubled person who let their pain take over.

(C)Trust me, I will live with that guilt for the rest of my life and I’ll probably never feel worthy of life anymore. But I guess that’s what I deserve for what I did.

(K)No, even you deserve life, Cormac, despite what you did. Don’t let the pain and the guilt consume you, because then you’ll want to hurt yourself and maybe even take your own life. I don’t want that for you, no matter how I feel towards you. Which is why I’m willing to let you become a part of my life and allow you to work to make amends.

(C)I’m speechless that you concern yourself with my well-being. But hearing everyone’s testimony about you, I can see why you would. You really are a gracious person, Kate, a one-of-a-kind human, and I thank you for giving me a second chance.

(K)There are people in this world that don’t deserve a second chance, because they don’t see the error of their ways. But you do and you’re willing to atone for your actions and you’ve changed your ways. You deserve a second chance and for your first step to redeem yourself, I’m sure Merig wouldn’t mind having you serve in the Royal Guards. Would you, my love?

(M)I wouldn’t mind at all, sweetheart. I think it’s a good idea. What about you, my second in command?

(L)Oh, this should be good. I say sign him up.

(G)Just know that Merig won’t go easy on you.

(B)I think it’s a fantastic idea, sis. You and I can use him as target practice.

(K)No, Barth, as much as I’m sure you’d enjoy that. Hurting Cormac would only make us the villains. That goes for you as well, my love. I love you, but I won’t let you stoop to that level. Make his training rigorous, but don’t intentionally hurt him. I made that clear when you were training Gordo. Sparring with Cormac would be a better way to let out frustration and anger toward him.

(G)That’s pretty much what he did with me. He had lots of fun with me during sparring.

(L)I’ll have him do the janitorial work for a while. It’ll give me a break from cleaning up the messes around here.

(K)So Merig, do you promise?

(M)[sigh] Alright, my moon, I promise. You’ve already given him a good beating for all of us. I'll do my best to not give him another one like we did after that battle.

(K)Well, I think that settles it, then. It might take a while for all of us to adjust, but I think you’ll do just fine here. And if you want a seat at the pub with us, I guess we can open one for you at our table.

(C)I probably shouldn’t. I don’t think I’ve earned that, but I’ll hang out here since I’ll be training, anyway.

(K)It’s too cold out here right now, so just come to the pub where it's warm.

(C)Thank you, Kate, but I don't think I'll exactly be welcome there, at least not where you all sit, so I won’t intrude. I appreciate the gesture and for letting me work to make amends, but I think continuing to isolate myself is the best thing for me until all is well between us. I’ll wake up, do my training and whatever else I need to do, and keep to myself afterward.

(K)Cormac, if I personally invite you, then you're welcome there.

(C)That's just one person, though. What about everyone else? Would they want me there, too?

(K)I guess he's right. Would you all care if Cormac joined us to hang out at the pub?

Kate shifts her gaze towards the remaining members of the group, seeking their perspectives on the issue at hand. Each individual takes a moment to reflect internally before articulating their thoughts. A few display expressions of doubt, while others respond with nods of agreement after careful consideration. They exchange glances among themselves before redirecting their focus to Kate and Cormac. Merig advances and becomes the first to voice his opinion, a gentle smile gracing his features.

(M)I don't see why not, it wouldn't bother me any. What about the rest of you?

(L)[shrugs] Sure, there's always room in our usual spot.

(G)It'll be a change, but it's something I can get used to.

(B)I think you've at least earned it since you came here and actually got on your knees. As long as you've changed like you say you have and as long as sis says it's okay, I'm fine with it.

(A)Fine, but I still don't like you. You're going to have to earn my respect.

(S)I don't mind, you seem like a good person deep down. Besides, I wasn't there when everything happened, so I don't think I have much of a say.

(K)Well, there you have it. You're free to join us at the pub. You can also meet my parents since they're still here in the city if you’d like.

(C)I don't think that's such a good idea. They'd probably kill me.

(K)It'll be fine, I'll tell them everything you've said to me today. Besides, I'm an adult and I get to choose who's in my life. I've said the same thing to Merig about marrying him. If anyone has a problem, they don't have to like it and I make my own decisions in life. If we all here can adjust to you being around, then so can my parents. They're compassionate people like me. I mean, I was raised by them after all.

(C)If only you're sure about me being there and being in your life, then I'd be honored. Thank you.

(K)You don't deserve to be alone, Cormac, being alone is miserable. If you're alone, it's hard to heal from pain, because no one is there to tell you everything's okay. If I wouldn't want that for myself, then I certainly don't want that for you, despite everything.

(C)I really appreciate it, Kate, that means a lot to me. It's been lonely, but I've managed.

(K)Well, we can all go to the pub together. My parents should be meeting up with us there after my mom is done resting. They'll be leaving tomorrow morning to go back to Taill, but they'll be back before the wedding.

(C)I'll come hang out, but I'm not ready to meet your parents yet. At least, not until I've fully redeemed myself.

(K)I understand, but you'll be at the wedding, right? You can meet them then.

(C)Only if you want me there. I'd love to see you and Merig get married. I'm sure it'll be a happy time for you both.

(K)It'll be the happiest time of my life becoming Merig's wife.

(C)I'm glad I came here, and that you were willing to hear me out and talk to me. I think it was worth it.

(K)Oddly enough, I'm glad, too. But for now, let's head over to the pub for a bit before I have to meet up with my parents. I want to spend what time I can with them before they leave tomorrow.

(C)Of course, I won't take up all of your time.

(B)I could use a break, and I'm hungry since it's lunchtime.

(G)Hell yeah, I'm up for it.

(L)I think we could all use a break since it's supposed to be a relaxing day.

(A)I guess I'll go, too.

(S)Let's go have some fun.

(M)I wouldn't mind spending some time with my fiancée.

(K)[smiles] Of course, my love. Let's all get going, then.

(C)Sure thing.

The group departs the training grounds, heading to the pub to enjoy each other's company. Later, Kate meets up with her parents, spending quality time with them before returning to the inn for the night. That evening, Kate and Merig savor a wonderful dinner together at home, then settle in for a cozy night. Snuggled under the blanket, they lie together in bed, Merig holding Kate close as they share tender kisses. After a few moments, Kate pulls away, and they exchange a loving smile. With a gentle gaze, Kate speaks up, her voice soft and intimate.

(K)You know, as much as I would love to lie here and have you kiss me all night. We do have to get up early in the morning to say goodbye to my parents before they leave.

(M)Sorry, I guess I got a bit carried away. I keep thinking about what you did earlier, and it kinda made me fall in love with you all over again. As if I don’t do that every day already.

(K)Hey, that wasn't exactly my proudest moment, okay? The slap in the face was enough. I really felt bad about what transpired after that. I just let out the frustration I had, and I took it out on Cormac.

(M)I understand, sweetheart, you’re not the violent type of person and I know that. But you shouldn’t let it get to you, nor should you feel guilty. Everyone else there doesn’t think you did anything wrong, considering all that Cormac did. Although they were just as surprised as I was when you kicked his ass like that. I understand your frustration. Trust me, I would’ve done worse, but I know you wouldn’t want that. I have frustration towards him, too. You have to remember, I’m the one he killed during that battle. But I did it to protect you, so you shouldn’t feel bad about that. I know I don’t, and I battled with it mentally, just like you. But I opened up to you about it and you helped me get through it. Thanks to you, I feel so much better just having you here with me.

(K)I know, honey, and I can’t imagine what you went through. If it was me, I would’ve died for you, too. I helped you because I love you so much and I didn’t want to see you to battle it alone. You’ve done so much for me, and it was only right for me to help you in return. I’m the luckiest woman to have you in my life, Merig.

(M)And I’m the luckiest goblin to have you, Kate.

(K)I know you fought a daily battle as well and I’m so sorry. I was more than happy to take your pain away, just as you did with my pain. And if you ever need me in the future, I’m always here for you.

(M)Don’t be sorry, you took my pain away just by being the amazing woman you are. You’ve always been good to me and you never stopped loving me.

(K)Truth is, I was worried that you’d resent me since I’m the one you died for.

(M)Sweetheart, you know better than that by now. I've never resented you, not one bit. I love you so much and I’m dedicated to you and to protect you from harm, and you damn well know that. I thought you resented me, too, but I was a fool to think that.

(K)I guess we were both fools. Although, it did feel good to slap Cormac like I did. He did deserve it in a way, so I guess I don’t feel too bad about it anymore. But he did seem serious about making amends and bettering himself, and I sensed the good in him. I kinda feel better after talking to him. I feel more weight lifted off my shoulders and I don’t feel afraid anymore. Maybe allowing him to work to redeem himself is a good thing and it’ll help me to forgive him and move on. I don’t want to hold a grudge, it’s just too much for me to bear.

(M)I know, honey, I feel the same way despite what he did. I don’t want to hold a grudge, either, and maybe Cormac, being in our lives, will teach all of us something. Like I told him, I do still care about him. He’s like family to me. And having your family hurt you, isn’t easy to deal with or forgive, so it’ll take time for me to forgive him as well and I’m sure that goes for the other goblins.

(K)I completely understand, my love. I think it’ll take time for all of us to adjust and forgive, and that’s okay. What’s important right now is to finish planning our wedding. All we need are invitations and thankfully my mom is helping me with that. All you and I have to do is make a guest list and send it to her, and that shouldn’t be too hard.

(M)Not at all, we know who we want to invite.

(K)We also need to work on our vows. That’s the most important part of the entire wedding, the words we want to say before we put the rings on each other.

(M)Well, I definitely know what all I want to say and it will come from deep within my Fomor heart.

(K)Fomor or not, you still have a heart and I love it. My words will be coming from my heart, as well.

(M)I and my heart belong to you and after this wedding, I will myself belong to you forever.

(K)And myself and my heart belong to you, as well. Even if this wedding doesn’t happen, I will always belong to you. But for tonight, I want to lie here in your arms and fall asleep. My parents will be waiting for us before they leave to go back home.

(M)Alright, my moon, I’ll hold you all night and not let go. I love you so much.

(K)I love you, too, my earth.

The couple continues to hold each other tightly, sharing a contented smile before sealing their affection with a tender goodnight kiss. As sleep claims them, they drift off into peaceful slumber together.
