A few days later, the weekend greets them with a chilly, snowy Saturday morning. Kate is wrapped in a cozy cloak, while Merig is clad in his light armor and cape. The couple walks through the city, making their way to the square to meet Kate’s parents. Merig feels a twinge of nervousness, yet he stays composed as he holds Kate's hand. Noticing his anxious demeanor, Kate gazes at him with concern and speaks in a soft, soothing voice.
(K)Are you still nervous, my love?
(M)A little, but I'm okay, I really do want to meet your parents. My stomach just feels the same as it did when I confessed my love to you. I wanted to tell you so badly, but I was scared, but I knew I had to tell you that I love you or I'd regret it.
(K)And I admire your bravery, Merig, it's one thing about you that made me fall in love with you, and look where we are now because of it. We're planning our wedding and you're about to meet my parents.
(M)You're absolutely right. The love I have for you gave me the courage to tell you how I felt, and I'm glad I did. Now I just need to have that same courage, so I won't be so nervous about meeting your parents.
(K)[smiles] And that's how I know I'm making the right decision to marry you. Kind, caring, sweet, loving, confident, brave, strong, protective, charming, and so much more.
(M)And I’m confident that I made the right decision to ask you to marry me. Kind, loving, caring, beautiful, generous, thoughtful, enchanting, soft-spoken. We’d be walking all day if I kept going and we don’t want to miss meeting your parents.
(K)[giggles] I agree. Besides, we want to save all the sentiments for our wedding vows. That’s another thing we have to do, we need to write down what we want to say to each other. But we have time.
(M)Good point. I pretty much know what I want to say when we get married and I can't wait.
(K)Neither can I, our vows should come from the heart and I know exactly what I want to say, too.
(M)You're absolutely right, sweetheart. But for now, let's meet up with your parents. We’re almost to the square.
(K)Alright, my love, let’s not waste time.
Kate and Merig continue to stroll hand in hand through the bustling city streets until they finally arrive at the square. Standing by the water fountain, they eagerly anticipate the arrival of Kate's parents. Despite scanning the area and waiting patiently, there is still no sign of them. A look of concern crosses Kate's face as she expresses her worries to Merig.
(K)I hope they didn’t get lost. They said they would meet us here right about now.
(M)Maybe we should go look for them.
(K)Maybe, but they told us to wait here, so that’s what we’re doing. I don’t want to leave while they show up when we’re not here.
(M)Right, we’ll keep waiting then. Is it too cold out here for you?
(K)Nope, as long as I’m bundled up and standing close to you, I’m warm.
(M)Good, 'cause we don’t need a frozen Kate.
(K)Yeah, that would be bad. Let me hug up to you and I can get warm.
(M)Sure thing, sweetheart, come here.
Merig softly smiles, opens his arms wide, and beckons Kate to come closer, his cape unfolding like a warm embrace. Kate's face lights up with a smile as she approaches him, and she happily wraps her arms around Merig, feeling the warmth of his hug. After a few moments, Kate hears a voice behind her, and Merig's gaze shifts upward, his eyes widening in surprise.
(J)Kate?
Kate suddenly brightens up before breaking away from Merig and spinning around. Standing before them is a woman with reddish-brown wavy hair and glasses, who bears a striking resemblance to Kate, and a tall ginger-haired man with a beard. Their names are Joanna and Thomas, Kate's parents. Kate's face lights up with a huge smile as she greets them, clearly overjoyed to see them.
(K)[smiles] Hey Mom, hey Dad.
(J)Oh sweetheart, come here and give your mother a hug.
Joanna opens her arms, and Kate rushes into them, wrapping her own arms around her mother in a warm, tender hug. They share smiles of excitement, savoring the moment. Kate pulls away, turns to her father, and opens her arms again, eager for a hug. Thomas smiles, leans down, and envelops his daughter in a tight hug, his face radiating happiness. As they pull away, Thomas greets Kate in a soft, deep, and kind tone, his voice filled with warmth and affection.
(T)It’s good to see you, pumpkin.
(K)It’s so good to see you, too. I’ve missed you both.
(J)Oh, honey, we’ve missed you, too.
(T)We’ve been so excited to come and see you. Your mother has been talking nonstop about this trip since we planned it.
(K)[giggles] Typical Mom, I’d expect that of her.
(J)Well, can you blame me? We haven’t seen you for almost a year and a half. I missed my baby.
(K)I know, I don’t blame you at all, Mom. How have you been feeling since I left?
(J)Oh, I’ve been feeling much better thanks to you and your father, I feel right as rain. Although I do get tired from time to time, but after a nap I feel better.
(K)Good, I’ve been so worried about you since I left.
(J)No need to worry yourself at all, honey, your father has taken good care of me. Besides, I’m sure you’re very happy here in Tara and I’m so proud of you for starting a new life.
(K)Thanks, I‘m very happy here, Mom, I absolutely love it here.
(J)Good, it’s so lively here. This city is bustling with people and beautiful shops. I’m probably the reason we‘re late meeting you here. I just had to check out this lovely antique shop.
(K)[smiles] I don’t blame you, I come out here at least once a week and even more lately since I’ve been planning the wedding. Just the other day, I was at the bakery and reserved a specific cake for the wedding. You’re going to love it when you see it.
(J)Oh honey, I can’t wait for the wedding. I’m sure it will be gorgeous.
(K)It definitely will be. As I said in my last letter to you both, I still need to find Merig a wedding ring and then get a guest list and invitations made and sent out.
(J)You have plenty of time before the wedding, just make the guest list and send it to me. I’ll make and send you the number of wedding invitations you’ll need.
(K)Really, Mom? You don’t have to do that.
(J)Nonsense, I can at least do something for my baby’s wedding, since I didn’t get to before, I’d be happy to do it.
(K)Okay, Mom, thank you.
(J)How have you been since…him?
(K)Let’s not talk about that, Mom, not in front of Merig. That was so long ago, I haven’t even told him, yet. I kind of want to avoid revealing my past as best as I can. Merig has been so good to me and has helped me heal so much from it.
(J)Okay baby, I completely understand. We can talk about it later when it’s just us.
(K)Okay, Mom.
(J)…And this must be Merig himself.
Joanna's gaze shifts, a smile playing on her lips as she sees Merig, who is a few paces away from Kate. Merig takes a deep breath, straightening his posture with a sense of confidence before taking a step closer to Joanna. Merig’s smile is gentle and his approach graceful. With a mix of nerves and respect, he formally greets Joanna with a formal and respectful tone.
(M)Yes, ma’am, that’s me, I’m Merig Flynn, it’s lovely to meet you.
Joanna's face lights up as she eagerly walks towards Merig, her arms outstretched in anticipation. She warmly embraces him, enveloping him in a tight hug. Merig's eyes widen in surprise, but he reciprocates by gently wrapping his arms around Joanna. After pulling away, Joanna speaks to Merig with a cheerful tone.
(J)It’s so wonderful to finally meet you, Merig. I’m Joanna. Kate has told us so much about you and we couldn’t wait to come here.
(M)It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, ma’am.
Thomas steps forward, a friendly smile on his face, and extends his hand in a gesture of greeting. Merig looks up at him with a nervous smile, then glances down at Thomas' outstretched hand, hesitating for a brief moment. Collecting himself, Merig extends his own hand, and the two shake hands firmly, exchanging a proper greeting.
(T)Hi, Merig, I’m Thomas, it’s great to finally meet you. Kate told us how you saved her life and I wanted to thank you for protecting our daughter. But we’re also thankful that you’re alive as well. Kate seems to love you very much and I know she would be devastated if you weren’t here. I wish nothing but the best for you both and that you’re taking care of each other.
(M)Yes, sir, it’s great to meet you as well. I love Kate very much and I told her I’d protect her with my life and I meant it. If it wasn’t for her bringing me back, I wouldn’t still be here. I thank her every day and I do everything in my power to protect her and take care of her. She takes wonderful care of me as well.
(T)I love to hear that, you’re a hero in our book.
(J)I couldn’t agree more and I’m sure you two are so happy together, even with everything that Kate told us in her letters.
(M)Yes, ma’am, your daughter makes me very happy, and she makes others happy as well. A lot of the people in this city greatly admire her for her kindness and generosity to help others. Her altruism is widely loved by many in Tara.
(J)Wonderful! That sounds like the lovely daughter that we raised. Also, there’s no need for formalities. You can call me Joanna, or Jo.
(M)Yes, ma’am, I mean Joanna.
(J)[giggles] Such a sweet goblin, it’s no wonder Kate is so fond of you.
(K)[giggles] He really is wonderful, isn’t he? Why don’t we go to the pub where it’s warm and you can meet the rest of the group? Ashley and Sarah are there and they’d love to see you.
(J)Oh, of course! I’d love to see them and meet everyone else. And you’re right, let’s get out of this cold. How about it, Tom?
(T)I would sure like to meet everyone as well, show us the way, pumpkin.
(K)Alright, you two, follow me. Let’s go, sweetheart.
(M)Okay, honey.
Kate takes Merig's hand, guiding her away from the square as they head toward the pub, with Joanna and Thomas trailing behind. Before long, they arrive at the bustling, inviting pub, where the four friends navigate through the crowd to their regular table, where the rest of their group is gathered. Ashley and Sarah glance up just in time to see Merig, Kate, and her parents coming their way, their faces lighting up with joyful smiles.
(A)[gasp] Jo!
(S)You’re here!
Ashley and Sarah leap to their feet, eager to greet Joanna, and rush over to her with excitement. Ashley is the first to envelop Joanna in a warm hug, their arms opening wide as they squeeze each other tight. After a moment, Ashley steps back, and Sarah takes her turn, wrapping Joanna in a big hug. As they pull away, the three women share a heartfelt smile, their faces radiant with joy, happy to be reunited after a long time apart.
(J)Oh, you two, it’s so good to see you, girls. Look at you, you’ve grown so much since we last saw you, you’re both so beautiful.
(A)Thank you, Jo. It’s been so long and I’ve missed you. How have you been feeling since I left Taill?
(S)Yeah, I was worried since I heard you got sick.
(J)I’m doing much better, girls, don’t you worry yourselves. I was so excited to come see you all and meet Merig.
(A)Well, you’re in for a treat. Come, say hi to the rest of us. Don’t let us hog all of your time.
(S)We’ll get to sit and catch up.
(J)Of course, I want to meet everyone. Come on, Tom.
(T)[chuckles] Alright, honey, let’s not get too excited.
(J)Oh, nonsense, dear, this is an exciting time. Let’s go meet everyone.
Ashley and Sarah turn and head back to the table while Merig joins Kate in guiding her parents there to meet the rest of the group. The other goblins focus their attention on them as Barth stands up and circles the table. He approaches Kate's parents with a friendly smile and extends his hand to greet Thomas. Thomas smiles back, steps forward, and shakes Barth’s hand in greeting.
(B)Hi, you must be Kate’s parents. I’m Barth Flynn, Merig’s older brother. It’s nice to meet you both.
(T)Nice to meet you, Barth, I’m Thomas. Kate told us about you. You’re the one who helped my daughter escape from the bandit’s prison, right?
(B)[chuckles] Yes, sir, that was me.
(T)Thank you, it means a lot that you’ve looked after our precious Kate.
(B)You give me way too much credit, sir. Everyone here played a part in rescuing Kate and bringing her back to safety.
(S)Except for me, sadly I wasn’t there.
Across the table, Gordo sits hunched, his face a mask of guilt, and his eyes are fixed on the tabletop. Meanwhile, Thomas retreats as Joanna strides toward Barth, her face alight with a welcoming smile. With open arms, she beckons him into a warm embrace, her body language radiating pure joy. As their bodies meld, Barth returns her hug with equal enthusiasm. When they break apart, Joanna’s gaze lingers on Barth’s, her voice soft as velvet as she begins to speak.
(J)Hello, Barth, it’s so wonderful to meet you.
(B)It’s very lovely to meet you, as well. Joanna, is it? Kate has told us so many wonderful things about you both.
(J)Oh, Barth, you’re just as sweet as your brother. If goblins in Tara are this lovely, I’d like to meet the rest of you.
(A)Well, this one right here standing next to me is my other half.
(L)Ash is my better half. It's nice to meet you both. I’m Larry Dugan. Also, might I say, that your daughter is such a delight in this city and it’s all thanks to you for raising such a wonderful daughter. And now that I finally have the pleasure of meeting you, I can see where she gets her looks, too.
(J)[giggles] Oh my goodness, you are so kind, Larry. We both raised Kate the best we could.
(T)And you’re absolutely right, Larry. Kate is the spitting image of her mother. And by the sounds of it, our parenting has paid off. Kate has always been such a helpful and caring daughter. She even helped me take care of her mother when she fell ill, and we are forever grateful.
(J)Yes, and when I got better, I told her to spread her wings and find happiness. And when she told us she wanted to come to Tara, we let her fly and start a life of her own. It seems she chose her own destiny here with you all and Merig. She sounds very happy, so I’d say she made the right choice.
(L)We’re so glad you’re well again, ma’am. Kate absolutely did make the right choice and we couldn’t be happier and more grateful to have her here. We don’t know what we would do without her, and Ash was very eager to bring her here. She didn’t stop talking about Kate for weeks before we first met her. It’s like we already knew her before she even set foot in Tara.
(J)[giggles] Ash and Kate have always been so close. It's almost as if they were connected at the hip when they were kids. You’d think they were sisters since they did everything together. It was so precious. We’re even still friends with Ash's parents to this day back at home. Oh, by the way, Ash, your mother sends her regards. She told me you and her have been sending letters to each other and you told her about Larry. She said she wanted to come and see you soon.
(A)[smiles] When you go back home, please tell her she’s more than welcome to attend Kate and Merig’s wedding.
(J)I will definitely give her your message, dear. I'm very happy for you and Larry, as well. Oh! Kate has told us about Larry and Barth being in the Royal Guards with Merig. Is that true?
(L)Yes, ma’am, I’m second in command to Merig and Barth is training to be a captain.
(J)How wonderful, that’s an enormous achievement.
(L)It is. Merig and I have been in Tara and a part of the Royal Guards for over ten years now. We worked really hard to get to where we are and we enjoy protecting the city if we’re needed.
(T)That’s very commendable and I bet you all do amazing work.
(L)You’re too kind, we’re just pest control. Bandits don’t raid the city or its citizens outside the walls, thanks to us.
(J)Oh, how brave of you all. And Ash, Kate told us you’re a Royal Guard too.
(A)Yup, I'm a royal alchemist like I've always wanted to be, and I also do guard work.
(J)Congratulations, Ash, I’m so glad you finally achieved your dream, I bet you love it.
(A)Absolutely, I protect the city and my best friend. I kind of blame myself for Kate getting kidnapped when that battle first started. I left her alone so I could do guard work and I should’ve stayed to watch over her.
(J)Oh, Ash, don’t blame yourself. I'm sure you had no idea it was going to happen and you can’t always prevent the inevitable. We don’t blame you and we still love you like our own, sweetheart.
(A)I understand, that’s a relief to hear. I love you both as well.
(J)And Sarah, it’s so good to see you, too. Kate didn’t tell us you were here.
(K)That’s because we actually just ran into her a few days ago after Ash and I went to the florist. She came up to us while we were resting and she recognized us and she’s been with us ever since.
(S)That’s right, I only just moved here a few weeks ago and I live on the opposite side of the city, so that’s most likely why we didn’t see each other until that day.
(J)What made you want to move here? Weren’t you studying medicine over in Dunbarton?
(S)I was, but I ended up finishing and now I’m here working to become a healer.
(J)Oh, that’s wonderful, Sarah, I’m so proud of you, honey!
(S)Thank you, Jo. I felt so bad when I heard you got sick not long after I left. Had I known before then, I would have stayed and helped you get well.
(J)Don’t feel bad one bit. Sarah, Kate, and Thomas were there to take care of me and they did a wonderful job and now I’m feeling so much better. Besides, I wouldn’t have wanted you to throw away your studies just to help me.
(S)I completely understand and I’m so glad you recovered well, Jo.
(K)Sarah is also going to be a bridesmaid, Mom.
(J)[gasp] Oh, good! I’m so glad, Kate told me she was so worried about not finding a bridesmaid. How serendipitous that old friends were brought together during a happy time like this.
(S)You’re absolutely right, and I missed Ash and Kate so much. It makes me coming here to Tara all the more worth it.
(J)Absolutely, that is such a lovely reunion.
(K)And with you and Dad here, the reunion has only gotten bigger.
(J)[giggles] The more the merrier, right? Speaking of which, who else do I get to meet?
(K)Oh, just one more, he’s over there at the other end of the table, that’s Gordo.
(J)Oh, hello, Gordo, it’s very nice to meet you, dear.
Joanna casts her gaze towards Gordo, offering him a bright smile as she notices him seated at the far end of the table, his head bowed. Upon hearing Joanna's voice, Gordo's ears perk up, and he lifts his gaze to meet hers. His eyes widen, yet his expression remains marred by a frown and an air of embarrassment. For a brief moment, he reflects internally, guilt evident in his eyes, before addressing Joanna in a hesitant tone.
(G)I’m sorry, please excuse me.
(K)Hey, Gordo. What’s wrong?
Gordo abruptly rises from his seat, his eyes fixed on the floor, and swiftly turns away from the table, his movements betraying a desperate need to escape. Without a word or a glance, he hastily makes his way to the pub exit, his footsteps echoing through the room. The group's attention follows him, their faces etched with confusion and concern, as he disappears out the door. Joanna's gaze lingers on the empty space he left behind, her expression twisted in a mix of worry and guilt. She turns to Kate, her voice barely above a whisper.
(J)Oh, dear, was it something I said?
(K)No, Mom, you’re perfectly fine, I’ll go check on him.
(M)Be careful, sweetheart.
(K)I will, my love, I’ll be right back.
Kate turns away from the group as she dashes toward the pub door with a sense of urgency. She explodes out into the cool morning air, her eyes scanning the street with a mix of concern and determination. Spotting Gordo's retreating figure, she takes off after him, her heels pounding the snowy pavement in a frantic bid to catch up. As she closes the gap, Kate finally reaches Gordo, planting herself firmly in front of him to block his path. He comes to a halt, his eyes reluctantly meeting Kate's, who stands panting and expectant. Her chest heaving with exertion, while Gordo's face contorts in a mixture of shame, guilt, and anguish.
(K)Gordo, stop. Why did you run off like that?
(G)I'm sorry, Kate, I don’t think your parents would want to know who I am, especially not after everything.
(K)What makes you say that?
(G)…You’ve obviously forgotten what I did.
(K)No, but I forgave you, Gordo, remember?
(G)Yeah, but I know you still resent me for it.
(K)What? No, I don’t. Why would you think that?
(G)Look, some days, I can’t even face you without remembering what I did and being completely disgusted with myself. No matter what kind of control I was under, I shouldn’t have done any of those things that I did. But I did it, and I can’t take any of it back.
(K)I see, then it seems you have yet to forgive yourself.
(G)I guess so. Some nights I don’t sleep and I don’t feel deserving of this life here. I’m really considering just going somewhere and starting a new life of my own.
(K)Gordo, don’t do that. You have a life here like you always wanted, remember? I welcomed you here and forgave you because you left Cormac’s camp to better yourself.
(G)Maybe so, but none of it excuses the terrible things I did and I can’t help but feel like such a damn monster for it. I wish I could forgive myself, Kate, but this scar on my arm, among other things, just reminds me of everything I’ve done.
(K)Why haven’t you talked to me about this? I’m your friend, Gordo. I’m always here if you need to talk, just like you’ve done for me. You’re not a monster anymore, you’re a better person, and that scar should only remind you of who you used to be, not who you think you still are. You’re a completely different Gordo than the one I first met that day in the forest. You have the ability to forgive yourself, but you’re still ashamed, and I understand. If you want to leave, Tara, I won’t stop you. Just know that you’re leaving people behind who care about you.
(G)It’s not just my scar that reminds me of what a monster I was. But the one that you have as well, the one I gave you. How can you even call me a friend after that?
Kate extends her left arm from behind her cloak, pulling up her sleeve to reveal the scar that Gordo inflicted upon her during their first encounter. A smile crosses her face as she gazes up at Gordo. She then takes hold of his left hand with the same hand she had just extended. She clasps Gordo’s hand, leaving him momentarily speechless as he looks down at her, taken aback by her affectionate gesture.
(K)And are you sorry for what you did? Do you truly feel remorse, Gordo?
Gordo remains frozen, his gaze locked on Kate's outstretched hand. His eyes widen in astonishment as they finally drift to the scar on her arm. A silent battle rages within him as he studies the wound, his mind a whirlwind of emotions. Gently, he places his other hand over the scar, his touch soft and reverent. His eyes fill with a storm of emotions, and a single tear escapes, tracing a glistening path down his cheek.
(G)Yes, I’m so, so sorry, Kate. I wish I could take it all back and maybe Merig wouldn’t have hated me so much. He‘s always been such a good friend and I feel like I completely shattered our friendship, despite him finally forgiving me. I hurt you, someone who means a lot to Merig and now to me, since you forgave me. But for some reason, I still can’t seem to live with myself and I don’t think I ever will at this point. Ever since Cormac showed up the other day, I haven’t stopped thinking about all of this and reminding myself what a piece of shit I am.
Tears continue to stream down Gordo's face as he collapses to his knees, his sobs wracking his body. He clings to Kate's hand, his grip tightening. Concern etched on her face, Kate kneels in front of him, her free hand finding a comforting place on his shoulder. As her gentle touch soothes him, Gordo's gaze finally meets hers, and amidst his sorrow. A flicker of hope ignites in his eyes as he sees her reassuring smile.
(G)Why did you even forgive me? I didn’t deserve it and I don’t deserve this life here in this beautiful city. I deserved this scar that I have and everything that Merig put me through. You’re a wonderful and kind human, Kate, and I wasn’t kind to you. Yet you brought me here and forgave me and you’re still kind to me. You even came all the way out here in the cold and chased me down.
(K)Gordo, do you remember what I said to you in the forest the day that Merig proposed to me when I was foraging for herbs and you came out there to watch over me?
(G)[sniffles] Yeah, I remember.
(K)And remember when I said that as long as you became a better person and promised to never hurt me again, that I could possibly forgive you?
(G)How could I forget? I swore to you it would never happen again.
(K)That’s the exact moment that I forgave you, Gordo.
Gordo's anguished sobs slowly cease as his expression transforms. A mix of shock and wonder is etched on his face as he struggles to comprehend Kate's heartfelt words. With a gentle touch, Kate tenderly wipes away his tears with a soft corner of her cloak. Her radiant smile a beacon of comfort and warmth. Still kneeling, Kate opens her arms wide and wraps them around Gordo's shoulders, drawing him into a tight, reassuring hug. Gordo, overwhelmed by her kindness, swiftly reciprocates the embrace, his arms encircling her torso as they hug each other. As they finally pull back, Kate's gaze meets Gordo's, his eyes still welling up with tears, which she continues to gently dry with her cloak.
(G)But why? I did things that were unforgivable.
(K)Because dwelling on the past only hurts myself and you've proven to me more than once that you're truly sorry for what you did and regret everything while you actively became a better person. There's a limit to what I can forgive, and had you continued to hurt me, I don't think I would have. Or had you continued being a bandit, I wouldn't have forgiven you. As for Cormac, he's a different story. It's going to be very hard to forgive him, and I may never.
(G)I don't think I'll be able to forgive him, either. Not after all the hell he put me through and you saved me from that hell, Kate, and I'm forever grateful.
(K)And the difference between you and Cormac is that you came here and sought forgiveness. You promised to never do it again and you're now protecting the city. Besides, you weren't the one who shot Merig with a crossbow and watched him die in my arms trying to protect me.
(G)But I cut you and gave you this scar, then I broke into Merig's house and found you in the closet. Then I slapped you in the face and knocked your glasses off and kidnapped you. I found you when you tried to escape and grabbed your hair and tied you up even worse. Then I kept you locked in a cell and didn't let you leave. Then I fought Barth and tried stopping him from breaking you out.
(K)[sigh] You're right, Gordo, you did do all of that and it was terrible. And as much as I hated it, Merig put you through hell for it and I think that was punishment enough. Besides, you said you had a good reason to keep me in that cell and I believe you.
(G)I deserved it though, Kate, and I would've rather had Merig put me through hell than Cormac. It was completely worth it as long as you forgave me and as long as I could be here and be happy. I was okay with being punished for my sins. And despite everything, you didn't hurt me like I hurt you. Why?
(K)Because I don't like hurting anyone because I'm not that kind of person and Merig knows it. Merig would hurt anyone who hurts me and I can't do anything about that since he protects me and I love him for that.
(G)And I don't blame him, nor do I hate either of you. I'm just glad you accepted me as a friend and Merig accepted me as a Royal Guard and forgave me. Now I get to help protect you and other people. I love it here.
(K)Then keep doing it, Gordo, keep helping to protect me and the city. That's exactly how you're redeeming yourself. You're not a bandit anymore and you're doing right by me and others.
(G)I realize that now…thank you, Kate, for making me realize that and for being the gracious person that you are. This world definitely needs more humans like you.
(K)And we need more Fomors like you, Gordo. Now let's go back inside where it's warm and you can meet my parents. The truth is, I've told them about you and that Merig already put you through hell for what you did. I told them they don't need to worry and that you're a friend that changed your ways and they're happy about that.
(G)…Really?
(K)Yep, and I told them you've redeemed yourself and I forgave you. So you have nothing to worry about. Besides, I made you the ring bearer at our wedding, remember?
(G)[smiles] Yeah, how could I forget? Thank you, Kate. I hope you don’t hate me.
(K)Of course not, Gordo, If I did, I wouldn’t have accepted you as a friend or forgiven you.
Gordo pauses for a moment, contemplating, before inhaling deeply and letting out a sigh of relief. A smile spreads across both his and Kate's faces as she gently dries the remaining tears on Gordo's cheeks with her cloak. Embracing him in a final hug, they share a moment of comfort before heading back into the pub together.
(K)There, we don't want your tears to turn into ice, now do we?
(G)No, of course not, you're such a good friend, Kate, and I'm grateful for you and to have you in my life. Anyone would be lucky to be a part of your life, and Merig is lucky to have someone like you to love him as much as you do. You have such a pure heart and it can change anyone for the better.
(K)You’re a good friend, too, Gordo. Now come on, let's go back to the pub, okay?
(G)Right, I’m sorry, I’ve made a pathetic fool of myself, I’m so embarrassed.
(K)Don’t be, you’re not pathetic, it’s okay to cry sometimes. Here, let me help you up and we’ll meet back up at the table with everyone.
(G)Alright, let’s go. Just please don’t tell anyone about this, okay?
(K)Of course, this will be our little secret.[wink]
Kate and Gordo exchange a warm, gentle smile, a sense of newfound understanding and connection between them. Kate extends her hand, helping Gordo to his feet, and together they turn towards the pub, seeking the warmth and comfort within. As they enter, the cozy atmosphere envelops them. The two return to their table, where their friends and Kate's parents are engaged in lively conversation. The group's attention shifts to Kate and Gordo as they approach, their faces filled with curiosity and concern. Joanna rises from her seat, her expression etched with worry as she walks around the table and approaches them.
(J)Hello, dear, is everything okay?
(K)Everything is fine, Mom, no need to worry. Gordo was just a little nervous to meet you both.
(J)Oh honey, there’s no need to be nervous, it’s so nice to meet you. Kate told me about you. She said you turned your life around and left the bandits to come here. You’re Gordo, right?
(G)Yes ma’am, Gordo Berkus. I gave up a life of banditry and Kate was gracious enough to forgive me for what I did and gave me a second chance. She brought me here to become a better person, and I’m forever grateful for her kindness. I’m now a Royal Guard and I’ve sworn to protect the city, and that includes protecting Kate from further harm.
(J)[smiles] Wonderful, I’m so glad to hear that. Thank you for everything you’ve done, Gordo.
Joanna's face lights up with a warm, maternal smile as she opens her arms, embracing Gordo in a tender, enveloping hug. Gordo, taken aback, wraps his arms around her, returning the hug with a soft smile. He feels a deep sense of comfort and acceptance. Joanna pulls back, her eyes shining with kindness. She gently cradles Gordo's face in her hands, her touch warm and reassuring. She then turns to face the others at the table, her gaze sweeping across the group as she begins to speak.
(J)Well, now that we’ve all gotten acquainted, let’s sit and get to know each other more.
(G)Yes ma’am, allow me to take you back to your seat.
(J)Oh how sweet of you, dear, but you don’t have to.
(G)Please, it’s the least I can do to make up for my rudeness earlier.
(J)It’s really not a problem, but if you insist, dear.
Gordo softly places a hand on Joanna’s back, guiding her gently as he takes her hand and leads her back to her seat across the table. Meanwhile, Kate settles in beside Merig, while Gordo and Joanna navigate around to her designated spot. With a courteous gesture, Gordo pulls out Joanna's chair, and she graciously accepts, taking her place next to Thomas at the end of the table. On Joanna's left, Ashley finds her seat, with Larry beside her. Barth occupies the space next to Larry, followed closely by Sarah. Directly across from them, Kate sits next to Thomas, with Merig on her other side. Gordo then makes his way back to the opposite end of the table, reclaiming his seat across from Joanna, as the group settles in and resumes their lively conversation.
(J)So what does everyone do in the Royal Guards?
(M)Well, I'm the commander, so I lead the guards when fighting bandits and guarding the city. I also recruit and train new guards and I'm currently training Barth.
(J)That must be fun, especially for you, Barth, since you get to work with your brother.
(B)Yes ma’am, it is, and we’ve been having a lot of fun. I'm the oldest, but Merig is the boss of me this time around since I'm just in training right now to be captain.
(T)[chuckles] Ah, siblings, I know how that is. I have a younger brother as well. We used to fight and argue as kids and as adults, we just banter.
(K)That's pretty much how it is with these two. Once they start puffing their chests at each other, they don’t stop.
(M)Well, at least Barth admits that I’m the boss.[smirk]
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
(B)Unfortunately I kind of have to, but you know, eventually we’ll be a team right, little brother?
(M)Eventually.
(J)[giggles] It’s wonderful to see siblings working together. I'm sure you'll do amazing work once your training is complete, Barth.
(B)Thank you, you’re too kind, ma'am.
(J)What about you, Larry? What's your role in the guards?
(L)I'm the second in command. I pretty much do the same work as Merig. And if he can't work for whatever reason, I'm the one who fills in for him as the commander.
(J)I see, so much responsibility between you two, that's so helpful. And it will be more helpful once Barth becomes captain, right?
(M)That’s right, which is why I'm training him myself. Like he said, we'll pretty much be on equal footing once he's done training. But I'll still get to boss him around.[smirk]
(B)You’re lucky Kate's parents are here, little brother, or I'd make you eat those words.
(J)[giggles] Oh, you two, you're silly. What about you, Gordo?
(G)Oh, I'm just a regular guard, no special title for me. Although I do help train Barth and fight bandits.
(J)Nonsense, that sounds like work to me. You don't need to have a special title in front of your name. I'm sure you do great work protecting the city.
(G)Yes, ma’am, I try my best.
(K)He does great work. He also watches out for me when I'm out foraging. He makes sure I don't get attacked by bandits.
(J)See? No fancy title is needed. You're a Royal Guard. How much fancier can you get than that?
(G)[chuckles] Of course, you're too kind, ma'am.
(J)What kind of weapon do you use?
(G)I use knuckles, I fight using martial arts.
(J)Now that sounds fancy. I bet you're very quick on your feet.
(G)Yes, ma'am, I am. I take pride in my skills. I'm actually one out of just a few martial arts fighters in the guards.
(J)Then you are special, you must be the best out of all of them.
(G)[chuckles] I'd like to think so, but I'm not so sure, maybe I am.
(J)What weapon do you use, Merig?
(M)I'm a master archer, I love using a bow and arrow to fight bandits. Crossbow, as well if I want to be more quick about things.
(J)Oh, I like that, and I bet your skill is unmatched.
(K)Oh, it is, don't let him be modest, either. He’s the best marksman in Tara.
(M)Thank you, sweetheart. I do take pride in my skills as well. I had to use my sight and hearing to master it, but it paid off.
(J)I admire that, so fiercely brave and driven. Definitely the attributes of a knight.
(K)Actually, the queen is going to make him one, after our wedding.
(J)[gasp] Really? Oh, that's wonderful, Merig. You definitely deserve that title.
(T)Anyone willing to put their life on the line for people is definitely worthy of such a title. So vigorous and courageous, but also gentle and protective.
(J)I couldn’t agree more, darling.
(K)That’s definitely Merig, just a few traits that made me fall in love with him.
(J)How romantic. What a beautiful love story you both have.
(T)I agree, Jo, definitely perfect for our daughter.
(J)And what skills and weapons do you wield, Larry?
(L)My two beautiful, sharp blades of steel.
(J)Oh, you're a swordsman, how traditional. You must be the best as well since you're the second in command.
(L)Well, I try not to toot my own horn, but I guess you can say that. I've trained hard for a long time to master my swords. And I trained even harder as a Royal Guard, so you can say I'm the best at what I do.
(J)Don't sell yourself short, Larry. It takes a long time to master such skills, and I'd say you've earned your title as well. I'd love to see you all fight one day.
(M)You could definitely watch us at the training grounds when we train Barth today.
(J)Oh, I would absolutely love that, could we, Tom?
(T)I suppose I wouldn't mind watching as well.
(K)You can also watch Barth train me since he and I have been working on mastering my magic.
(T)So you found yourself a new mentor? That's so good to hear, pumpkin. I'm sorry I wasn't able to train you when your mother was ill.
(K)Don't worry, Dad, Barth has been a wonderful teacher. He also discovered his basic ice and fire spells need mastering, so I'm going to use what I learned from you to teach Barth.
(T)That's my girl, and thank you so much, Barth, for helping her.
(B)Of course, sir, I was more than happy to teach her what I know.
(J)Well, why don't you take us to the training grounds and we can watch you all show off your skills?
(M)I think we have time before our dinner this evening.
(K)We'll have plenty of time before then. Let's all go.
(J)Oh, how exciting.
Standing up from their table, the group makes their way to the exit, leaving the warmth of the pub behind as they journey to the Royal Guard training grounds. Once they arrive, they pass through the entrance, where Joanna and Thomas take a moment to absorb the scene. They notice the array of training gear and some guards practicing their skills. Merig leads Kate’s parents to a cozy resting area, with the rest of the group following closely, eager to escape the snowy chill. As they find their seats, Merig starts to explain the significance of the training grounds to Joanna and Thomas.
(M)Welcome to the Royal Guard training grounds. This is where we train our new recruits and any of the other guards can use this area at their disposal. I’ve also allowed Kate to train her magic here while Barth is training as well and where you’re sitting now, is the resting area. There’s an awning above us to keep this area from getting rained and snowed on and it’s even useful for shade in the hot summer to shield us from the sun. Over there are the wooden training dummies and not far from there, you’ll see the target area for archers. We have other areas around here for specific weapons. I myself use the targets and Larry and Gordo use the dummies here, as well as Barth, for his training.
(J)It looks very nice here and very well kept.
(L)That’s all thanks to me. I replace all the broken training equipment and keep the place clean. I’m very particular about having this training facility looking its best, as well as the armory with all the weapons. I keep everything polished and in its place.
(J)That’s my exact same philosophy, Larry. I like that. You’re a particular person and that’s okay. It’s what keeps this place looking spectacular.
(L)Thank you, ma’am. I take pride in that philosophy.
(B)Well Merig, if it's okay with you, Kate and I can warm up with some magic training. Then you, myself, and the rest of the goblins can do some sparring. What do you think?
(M)That's perfectly fine with me. I’m sure Kate’s father would like to see how she’s improved her magic.
(T)Absolutely, I would, let’s see what you can do, pumpkin. Have you remembered what I taught you?
(K)Of course, Dad, how could I forget? Let’s go do some warmups, Barth.
(B)Sure thing, sis.
Kate glances at Barth and offers him a smile as he acknowledges her with a nod. The two then rise from their seats and depart from the resting area. They proceed towards the training area, ultimately reaching the training dummies, while the remaining individuals remain seated, focusing their full attention on the pair. Once positioned in front of the dummies, Kate and Barth turn to face one another, prepared to commence their session.
(B)So the lightning spells are your favorites, just like me.
(K)That’s right, the thunder spell is the best out of the two.
(B)Well, I’m going to teach you a third spell that I know you’ll like.
(K)I love the sound of that.
(B)Just like that powerful fire spell I taught you the other day, you’re going to have to keep charging your lightning magic and let it build until you see a flash of light. Then you release all that stored-up magic and attack with it. Luckily, this isn’t just close range and it can stretch and strike multiple enemies.
(K)[smiles] That’s definitely my kind of spell. But first, let’s warm up and show my dad what I know.
(B)Alright, let’s impress him and show him what a powerful mage you are, sis.
(K)And you’ll show him what an outstanding teacher you are.
(B)[smiles] Go ahead, and face the dummies. Charge all of your bolt spells and have at it.
Kate nods and turns to face the rows of training dummies. She surveys the options before selecting her target, standing tall before the chosen dummy with a confident smile. With a swift gesture, she conjures an ice bolt, the air around her hand shimmering as a sphere of frosty energy takes shape. She hurls the icy orb at the dummy, encasing it in a thick layer of glittering ice. Next, she summons a fire bolt, flames dancing around her fingers like eager sprites. The blaze engulfs the frozen dummy, melting the ice and sending droplets flying in all directions. Finally, Kate calls upon the power of lightning, sparks crackling around her as she channels the electrifying force. With a precise flick of her wrist, she unleashes a bolt of lightning, striking the dummy with a resounding crackle. Kate beams with pride, exchanging a triumphant smile with Barth, who nods his approval. The group behind them erupts into applause, and Kate turns to face them, her smile broadening as she waves graciously, basking in the praise.
(B)You did great, sis. Now let’s try that fire spell again, shall we?
(K)[smiles] We shall.
(B)Now remember, lean forward when standing your ground so you don’t stumble from the kick-back again.
(K)Got it, I’m ready.
(B)Do you remember how to start casting it?
(K)Yep, I got this.
(B)Alright, let’s begin.
Kate's focus returns to the training dummies, her eyes locking onto one as she assumes a ready stance. Planting her feet firmly in the snow-covered ground, she leans forward slightly, her body taut with anticipation. Her hands hover close together, but without touching, as if a delicate balance is being maintained. Slowly, she draws her hands to her side, initiating the charge of her fire magic. The flames begin to form, growing in intensity with each passing moment. Her concentration deepens, her face etched with determination. As the fiery energy within her reaches its crescendo, a sudden flash of light illuminates her hands.
(B)Are you ready?
(K)You bet I’m ready.
(B)…Fire!
With a surge of strength, Kate thrusts her hands forward, unleashing the spell towards the dummies. The result is a cataclysmic explosion, reminiscent of the one seen before. The force of the blast sends Kate sliding backward across the snow-covered ground, but she manages to keep her balance. The dummies are engulfed in a fiery inferno, the intense heat melting the surrounding snow. As the flames reach their peak and begin to subside, Kate stands tall, her body rigid with exertion. Turning to Barth, she shares a look of exhilaration, their eyes sparkling with the thrill of success.
(B)[nods] Well done, you resisted the recoil, I'm proud of you.
(K)[smiles] Thanks, my ears are ringing again, though.
(B)Don't worry, you’ll get used to it.
The group at the resting area erupts in applause, their cheers echoing through the crisp winter air. Kate's heart swells with pride as she turns to face her supporters, a radiant smile illuminating her face. She responds with a graceful wave, acknowledging their enthusiasm. As the applause continues, Kate offers a modest bow. The group's words of encouragement wash over her.
(T)You’re doing great, pumpkin!
(J)Such a powerful spell!
(M)Good work standing your ground, sweetheart!
(A)Keep it up!
(L)That was awesome, Kate!
(S)Let’s see more!
(G)Yeah, show us another spell!
(K)We gotta give the audience what they want, Barth.
(B)[chuckles] Alright, since you nailed that fire spell, I’ll teach you another one like it. Only this one will be a powerful lightning spell.
(K)[smiles] Perfect, I’m definitely ready for that.
(B)Now, just like that fire spell, you’ll need to get into the same position while charging your lightning magic. Put your hands together the same way as well and start charging. Luckily, this spell doesn’t have a kickback, so don’t worry.
(K)Alright good, I can do that.
(B)Go ahead, and ready yourself
Kate turns her attention back to the training dummies, selecting a new target. She assumes a familiar stance, her hands hovering close together before sliding to her side. With a focused gaze, she begins to channel her lightning magic. The energy surges within her, gradually building in intensity. A sphere of electricity forms in her hands, growing larger with each passing second. As the charge reaches its peak, a blinding flash of light illuminates the training area, revealing the fully formed lightning ball cradled between Kate’s hands. She holds her position, awaiting Barth’s signal.
(B)Are you ready, sis?
(K)[smiles] I’m ready.
(B)Choose where you want the attack to go and release it at will.
Kate's gaze locks onto her intended target. With a swift motion, she thrusts her hands forward, releasing a torrent of lightning. The electric current stretches out for about ten feet, an electrifying path of destruction that obliterates three training dummies in its wake. The lightning dissipates as quickly as it appears, leaving behind a trail of charred wood. Kate's eyes widen in astonishment and delight, a radiant smile breaking across her face. She stands tall, her body vibrating with excitement. Turning to Barth, she shares a look of pure joy, her laughter ringing out in celebration of her impressive new spell.
(K)That was amazing! Did you see that, Barth?!
(B)I was watching the whole time, sis, you cast that spell beautifully.
(K)Thank you. The power that I felt while charging up that spell was invigorating.
(B)I bet, it’s a powerful spell, and it takes a lot of energy, so use it wisely. We can practice that and the fire spell you learned the other day.
(K)I’m looking forward to it. Now let’s go see what my dad thought of that performance.
(B)I’m sure he loved it. You did great.
Kate and Barth exchange a smile, basking in the excitement of her successful training session. They turn away from the training dummies and walk towards the group at the resting area, where the applause and cheers continue to fill the air. Kate acknowledges the praise with a gracious bow as they approach. As they reach the group, Thomas rises from his seat, beaming with pride. Kate walks up to him, and they share a warm, tender hug, a silent exchange of love and admiration between father and daughter. The atmosphere is filled with happiness and celebration, as Kate's loved ones gather around her, reveling in her accomplishments.
(T)Kate, that was spectacular! Those are very powerful spells you’ve obtained and I’m proud of you, pumpkin!
(K)Thanks, Dad, it felt so powerful. The lightning spells will always be my favorite because of you.
(T)You’ll be a master mage in no time. Barth, you’re an amazing mentor for my daughter. Thank you so much for helping her.
(B)It’s been a pleasure working with her, sir. Kate is a fantastic mage, and she learns quickly. She’ll master these spells without a doubt.
(J)I absolutely loved watching you, honey. That was wonderful to see and you’ve made us so proud. I remember watching you when your father was teaching you spells. I love you so much, my girl.
(K)I love you, too, Mom.
Joanna rushes to Kate, her eyes shining with excitement, and gently places her hands on Kate's shoulders. She pulls Kate into a warm embrace, tenderly kissing her forehead before enveloping her in a loving hug. Kate pulls back from her mother, beaming with happiness, and turns to face Merig. As she approaches him, Merig rises from his seat, his face lit up with a smile. He gently takes Kate's hands in his, holding them affectionately as he gazes down at her, his eyes mirroring her joy. The warmth and love of the moment are palpable, as Kate basks in the admiration and adoration of her family.
(M)That was amazing, sweetheart. Your spells are getting better every time.
(K)Thank you, my love, I’ve had you cheering me on, along with everyone else.
(M)I'll always be right here to cheer you on. I love you, my moon.
(K)I love you, too, my earth.
Merig's eyes lock onto Kate's as he gently pulls her close, leaning down to share a tender kiss. Kate's face flushes with happiness as they briefly savor the moment. As they pull away, they wrap their arms around each other, as the two turn their attention to everyone The rest of the group, still beaming with pride, rises from their seats and gathers around them, showering Kate with continued praise and admiration.
(A)You did much better with that fire spell, hon. But that massive lightning spell was awesome.
(K)I know, right? Can’t go wrong with lightning spells. They will always be my favorite. Also, I’m sorry about the dummies, Larry.
(L)[chuckles] No worries at all, Kate, that’s what this place is for, remember? I’ll take care of them like I always do. Although I should probably put that fire out and clean up those dummies right now.
(K)I can help you if you want since I’m the one that destroyed them.
(L)[smiles] Don’t even sweat it, Kate, you’re enjoying your time with your parents. Besides, cleaning up this place is my job, remember?
(K)Alright, just don’t burn yourself.
(A)I can help you put out the fire, honey.
(L)Don’t worry about it, I've got this.
(A)Okay, just be careful.
(L)Oh, I'll be just fine, sweetheart. As hot as our love is and the fire that burns between us, I can definitely handle it.
(A)Alright, fire tamer, go do your thing.
(L)Hey, If I can tame you, I can tame that fire. I love you, my beautiful red-hot flame.[wink]
(A)[giggles] I love you, too.
Their eyes meet, and a shared smile blooms between them. Larry's hand finds Ashley's chin, gently tilting her face as he leans in for a tender kiss. Breaking away, he turns with the purpose of extinguishing the flames and tending to the damaged training dummies. Nearby, Gordo and Sarah approach Kate, their faces beaming as they shower her with praise.
(G)That spell was badass, Kate, I really enjoyed watching you.
(K)Thanks, Gordo.
(S)It feels like old times seeing you cast your spells, Kate, it was so exciting to watch.
(K)I know, right? I’m always excited to cast lightning spells. Something about them just makes me feel alive.
(A)I remember that time you cast a lightning spell over my head and it made my hair stand up.
(K)[giggles] I remember that, too! Your hair stayed like that for days. I felt so bad and I didn’t cast my lightning spells for a while after that.
(A)[giggles] From then on, I made sure to stay behind you when you cast them.
(J)Well, we’ve had so much fun spending time with you all, I’m actually a little tired. Ever since I got sick, my energy isn’t what it used to be. Luckily, your father and I are staying at an inn not too far from here.
(K)I understand, Mom, you and Dad go and rest before our dinner tonight. It’ll be around seven o'clock, so that gives you plenty of time.
(M)I agree, you both must be tired from traveling here.
(T)You’re right, Merig, we’ll see you both, tonight. We love you, pumpkin.
(K)I love you, too, Dad. I love you, Mom.
(J)I love you, too, my baby. We’ll see you two later tonight.
(M)I can have a cart and horse sent over and take you two to the inn if you’d like.
(J)Don’t trouble yourself, Merig.
(M)It would be no trouble at all. Gordo, would you mind taking Kate’s parents to the inn?
(G)It would be my pleasure. I’ll go get a cart and horse ready.
Gordo grins, breaking away from the group as he heads towards the stables. His mission is to fetch a cart and horse to transport Kate's parents to the nearby inn. Meanwhile, Joanna and Thomas turn their attention to Merig and Kate, their faces softening into smiles as they approach the couple with a look of genuine appreciation.
(J)Thank you so much, sweetheart, you’re all so very thoughtful.
(M)Of course, I wouldn’t want you trudging through this snow. You must be cold as it is.
(T)We greatly appreciate it, Merig, and we look forward to having dinner with you both tonight.
(M)Kate and I look forward to it as well, sir.
(T)Your mother and I loved seeing you train, pumpkin. You’ve improved so much since the last time I trained you.
(K)Thanks, Dad. You taught me so much and I got a little rusty in some of the more powerful spells after so long. I wanted to keep training after I got here, and I was lucky enough that Barth agreed to mentor me.
(T)You’ve got good friends here with you, so keep them close. Keep practicing with Barth, and I know you’ll become a master mage. I believe in you.
(K)I believe in myself, too. Everyone here has been a blessing in my life and I couldn’t be happier here in Tara.
(J)We can tell how happy you are. You haven’t stopped smiling since we got here.
(K)Really? I guess I didn’t realize it.
(J)You being happy is all we care about, dear, and you as well, Merig. You two keep each other happy and love each other to the fullest.
(M)Yes ma’am, I love Kate very much, and as long as I'm with her, I'm always happy even on my bad days.
(K)Same with me. Merig seems to be the only one that can calm my anxiety. If I'm upset or having a panic attack, he just has to be with me and he makes everything better without even trying.
(J)[smiles] It's so good to hear that. Love is such a beautiful thing and you two show each other so much love and kindness, and it warms my heart.
(T)We love seeing you happy, Kate, and we're so glad to see you and Merig are happy together.
(A)We can't wait for this wedding, it's all Kate has talked about this past week.
(S)It's going to be so beautiful and I'm so glad to be a part of it.
(A)Me, too, I just might cry at the wedding.[giggles]
(J)Oh, I'm right there with you, Ash, watching my baby get married will be the most beautiful thing to witness.
(T)Agreed, your dear old dad might even shed a tear.
(K)[giggles] As long as they're happy tears, I don't mind at all.
Laughter and cheerful chatter resonate among the group as they continue to engage with one another. Eventually, the rhythmic sound of horse hooves on the snowy terrain, along with the creaking of wheels. They turn their attention to witness Gordo's arrival, as he expertly maneuvers the cart and horse. He commands the animal to stop in proximity to the group. Kate and Merig take it upon themselves to guide Joanna and Thomas to the cart. Kate then shares a heartfelt hug with her parents before their boarding.
(K)You two get some rest and we'll see you tonight.
(J)Okay, dear, we love you.
(K)I love you, too. Please make sure my parents get to the inn safely, Gordo, and you be careful as well.
(G)Don’t worry, they're in excellent hands. You can count on me, Kate. I'll be back soon.
Joanna and Thomas bid their final farewells, their faces aglow with warmth and gratitude. The two settle into the cart beside each other. With a gentle flick of the reins, Gordo sets the horse in motion. The cart glides smoothly out of the training grounds, carrying Kate's parents off to a well-deserved rest at the nearby inn. The remaining group lingers, savoring each other's company, before eventually dispersing and heading their separate ways. Later that evening, Kate and Merig reunite with Joanna and Thomas at the cozy restaurant where Kate and Merig had their first date. Seated together at a comfortable table, they indulge in delicious food and lively conversation. Their laughter and smiles fill the air as they share a joyful evening.
(K)How’s the food here so far?
(J)You were right, the food here is just divine and I love it.
(K)It really is, and this is the place where Merig took me on our first date after it first opened up. I was really excited to try it and it was completely worth it.
(M)But it’s still not as good as your cooking, sweetheart.
(K)Thank you, my love, you give me too much credit.
(J)How sweet of you Merig, you’re so soft-spoken and still such a brave and strong warrior.
(M)You’re way too kind, Joanna. Kate is a wonderful cook and I love her food, not as much as I love her, though.
(K)[giggles] Merig doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, but I have seen him angry. Last year, a man at the pub put his hands on me in a harmful way and Merig wasn’t so kind to him.
(M)I’ll admit, I’m quite protective of Kate if anyone threatens or hurts her.
(J)That’s what you do when you love someone. It becomes instinct to protect the ones you treasure the most with your life.
(T)That’s right and you’ll want to fight to the death with whoever brings harm to them.
(K)Merig has done just that, as you well know.
(J)And we are forever grateful to you, Merig.
(M)I can’t take all the credit. Kate saved my life as well, and I’m forever grateful for her. Like I said before, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here and those bandits would still be at large. Thankfully, they’ve left us alone ever since and some of them left to come here and better themselves.
(J)I’ve always imagined that Kate would have the power to stop evil with her pure heart.
(M)She really does and that pure heart is made of gold as well. She’s got quite the reputation here in Tara.
(T)Kate has always had empathy for others if they weren’t happy and would do anything to see someone smile. Helping people always brought her joy and the people she helped absolutely loved her and her selflessness and willingness to help those in need.
(M)That sounds like Kate. It seems she has that effect everywhere she goes. The people of Tara greatly appreciate her altruism. The bakery owner that is making our wedding cake, almost lost her business when one of her workers quit. Kate swooped in and did what she could and it gave the owner ample time to find a new worker. We’ve been friends with her ever since and she adores Kate and we’ve even invited her to the wedding.
(K)Charlotte is absolutely thrilled to be attending and we love her to bits.
(J)I bet she is. It’s going to be a gorgeous wedding and I can hardly wait.
(K)Me either, we practically have everything planned, there are just small things left to do.
(J)In due time, dear, just relax and be thankful for what you have already done, and don’t overwhelm yourselves.
(T)That’s right, your mother and I are really enjoying our time here with you, pumpkin.
(J)Absolutely, your friends are lovely and this city is so big and beautiful. We understand why you chose this place to live. We also loved watching you train your magic and Merig is such a sweetheart, we couldn't wait to meet him.
(M)Thank you, Joanna. You and your husband are very kind and we love having you here, especially Kate. She was so excited to bring you both here to see her and meet the rest of the group. And I especially couldn't wait to meet you.
(K)We're glad you and Dad like it here, Mom. And we're hoping you'll come and visit more often.
(J)Of course, honey, your father and I will be here just a few days before your wedding. I want to help you get ready for your and Merig's big day.
(K)I would love that, Mom and there’s something I want to ask you and Dad.
(J)Sure, honey, what is it?
(K)I want you and Dad to walk me down the aisle.
(J)[smiles] Oh, sweetheart, of course we will.
(T)We’ll be on either side of you if that’s what you want.
(K)That’s exactly what I want. I love you both and I want you both to be in the spotlight with me and the rest of the wedding party.
(J)I’d be more than happy to walk you down the aisle with you and your father.
(K)[smiles] Thank you, both. This wedding will be perfect, Merig, and I can't wait.
(M)Also, if I may, I'd like to personally ask you both something very important as well.
(J)What is it, dear? Ask us anything.
(T)We're all ears, Merig.
(M)Well, I figured it would be appropriate to officially ask both of you for your blessing to marry your wonderful daughter.
(J)Oh, Merig, you already had our blessing. You didn't even have to ask. But since you feel so obligated, Thomas and I have already talked about it long before we got here. And our answer is yes, you absolutely have our blessing to the fullest.
(T)She's right, Merig, we had a feeling you would ask, and after everything Kate has told us about you, we were both well prepared and willing to give you our blessing, especially since you've already shown us how good you are to our baby girl and we hold you in our highest regards.
(M)[smiles] Thank you both. You have no idea how much that means a lot to me.
(J)And it means a lot to us that someone like you is so loving and caring for our daughter, and you’re not even human. But that’s okay, you don’t have to be in our book. Kate told us that she loves you as you are.
(M)It’s funny that you say that, Kate tells me the same thing. Which brings me to my next question.
(J)Of course, what else is on your mind, Merig?
(M)Well, when I first told your daughter how I felt about her, I had one fear in the back of my mind. And that fear was that she wouldn't love me because I'm a Fomor and I even feared the same when I asked her to marry me. But she assured me that she loves me, despite that fact. I fell in love with Kate for many reasons, but her kindness and love toward everyone are what stuck out the most. She accepted me as part of her life and treated me as if I were another human. And she too, fell in love with me even though I'm a goblin and not human, like her. She has a beautiful and free spirit with an open mind and she's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I feel very lucky to be with her and I'm the luckiest goblin to be getting married to such a wonderful human, and she said she feels the same way. I'm more than grateful that she loves me, no matter if I'm a Fomor. I could go on forever about all of this, but I wouldn't want to take up too much time. But with all of that being said, I wanted to ask. Are you both okay with the fact that I'm a goblin who wants to marry your daughter, a human?
(J)[smiles] Of course, we're okay with it, Merig, we've been living with Fomors for a long time and we're even friends with them back home in our town. They're people to us and are just as peaceful and harmless and they just want to live like we do. We raised Kate in that environment and she even spent time with Fomors as a child and made friends with them. She treated them no differently from her human friends and became fascinated by them, and she wasn't afraid of them. Her father and l knew that there would be a possibility of her falling in love with a Fomor since she spent just as much time with them throughout her life as she did with other humans. So we were prepared for that possibility and we were okay with it, as long as that Fomor treated her with love and kindness, like you do.
(T)Once Kate told us about you and that you were a goblin, we immediately accepted the fact that she fell in love with a Fomor and chose to be with you. And now we'll get to see her get married to you. Seeing how much you treat her with love and kindness, we knew she made the right choice. Jo and I both will be so happy to call you our son-in-law, Merig.
Joanna and Thomas exchange a knowing smile with Merig, whose eyes widen in astonishment, his face frozen in a mixture of shock and delight. He takes a moment to gather his thoughts, his mind racing with the weight of their words. As he collects himself, his gaze drifts to Kate, and they share a tender, knowing smile. Kate's hand reaches out, and she gently intertwines her fingers with Merig's, offering a comforting squeeze. Merig's attention returns to Kate's parents, and his face erupts into a radiant grin, his eyes sparkling with joy and anticipation. With a deep breath, he prepares to speak.
(M)I honestly don’t know what to say. Thank you both, for accepting me into your beautiful family and for giving me your blessing to marry your wonderful daughter. Words can't describe how happy I am.
(J)You two look so happy together and we love seeing our girl happy. You’re going to be a wonderful new addition to the family, Merig, so we want nothing but happiness for you as well.
(M)Nothing would make me happier, Joanna.
(K)And nothing would make me happier as well.
(J)So, what have you done so far for the wedding?
(K)Well, I have my wedding dress as well as Ash’s maid-of-honor dress. Now I just need to get Sarah’s bridesmaid dress and Merig’s outfit, as well as Larry and Barth’s outfits.
(J)I’d love to see your wedding dress. Where are you keeping it?
(K)It’s with Ash until the wedding. But you can see it if you want before you and Dad leave.
(J)We’ll definitely have to pay her a visit.
(K)I’ve also got the flowers reserved for my bouquet and decorations and the wedding cake. Queen Eirawen approved of the wedding venue and the reception and she’s also taking care of our official documents, and she will even be the officiant.
(J)The queen is marrying you two?
(K)That’s right, she’s a good friend of ours and she’s been a big help to us. I was going to send her a letter asking if I could have a wedding ring made for Merig since that’s another thing I haven’t done yet.
(T)Actually, that won’t be necessary.
(K)What do you mean, Dad?
(T)I have a ring that Merig can have, as a gift from your mother and me. You may have to get it resized, but you are welcome to try it on, Merig. It belonged to my grandfather, Kate’s great-grandfather, so it’s a family heirloom. Luckily I brought it with me.
Thomas rises from his seat and reaches into his pocket to retrieve a small, mysterious black pouch. He settles back into his chair, his eyes locked on Merig's, and opens the pouch. A soft gasp escapes Merig's lips as Thomas reveals a sturdy, gray iron ring. Its rugged texture, offset by a thin ribbon wrapped around its center. The ribbon, crafted from the resilient material of arrowheads, adds a touch of elegance to the ring's bold design. Merig's curiosity is piqued, and he leans in, his eyes fixed intently on the ring, taking in every detail as he admires its unique beauty.
(T)This ring is perfect for you, Merig. It’s made from iron and an arrowhead. Go ahead and try it on.
(M)It’s absolutely beautiful, sir. Are you sure about me trying it on?
(T)Of course, it’s our gift to our future son-in-law.
Merig and Thomas exchange a warm smile as Merig extends his hand, palm up, in anticipation. Thomas gently places the ring in Merig's palm. Merig gazes down at the ring in wonder, his eyes shining with delight. He lifts the ring to the light, admiring its intricate details, his smile broadening with excitement. But just as he's about to slip the ring onto his finger, his expression falters, and a faint frown creases his brow. He glances down at his other hand, and his eyes cloud with concern. Turning to Kate, he seeks her understanding. Kate's face mirrors his distress, her voice soft and inquiring as she speaks.
(K)What’s wrong, my love?
(M)I just noticed something about my hands. Do you notice something odd?
(K)That’s your hand, sweetheart.
(M)That's not exactly what I meant.
(K)Well, you’re a goblin, so you only have four fingers on each hand, right?
(M)That’s right, so I’m not exactly sure which one would be appropriate for me to put this ring on.
(K)Well, since the ring finger is the second to the last finger on the left hand for humans, then it should be the same for goblin hands, at least that’s my guess.
(M)That makes sense. I’ll try it on, then.
Merig steadies himself with a deep breath before returning his attention to his left hand. With a touch of nervousness, he raises his hand and slips the ring onto the second-to-last finger. To everyone's astonishment, the ring fits perfectly. Kate and Merig exchange excited glances, their smiles widening. The joy is mirrored on Joanna and Thomas's faces as they share in this heartwarming moment.
(M)It fits!
(T)Well, I’ll be damned, it does.
(J)That’s amazing, Merig! It’s perfect for you!
(K)You now have a wedding ring, my love. Thank you, Dad. You have no idea how much this means to us.
(T)You’re very welcome, pumpkin and Merig. That ring is very special to our family and I trust no one else but you to have it. It is a gift and a token of our appreciation for being so good to our daughter and protecting her.
(M)Of course, sir, thank you. I absolutely love it and I’ll cherish it forever. I’ll take good care of it and it will symbolize our marriage and my love for Kate.
(T)Good, I’m glad you like it, Merig.
(J)You absolutely deserve it, dear. Now let’s finish talking and enjoying this lovely food. I’d love to catch up and know what else you plan for this wedding.
(K)Of course, Mom. What I wrote in those letters is only half of it.
(M)We can even show you where we're getting married and where the reception will be. Since there are not a lot of people out this late, it'll be a peaceful walk, if you don’t mind walking through the snow. Otherwise, I can always have Gordo bring the horse and cart over here.
(J)That would be lovely, Merig, thank you.
(M)Think nothing of it, it’s my pleasure.
(J)Then let's finish up here and we'll go.
As the evening unfolds, the four wrap up their lively conversation and delightful meal. They then set out on a scenic tour of the city, guided by Gordo on the cart and horse. They ride through the picturesque streets, with Merig pointing out the enchanting venues where the upcoming wedding and reception will take place. After a leisurely excursion, they bid Kate's parents a fond goodnight, dropping them off at their cozy inn. Kate and Merig then find themselves back at their own haven, where they unwind and slip into comfortable sleepwear, feeling the gentle relaxation of the evening. Merig stands beside the bed, a soft smile spreading across his face as he completes his bedtime routine. Kate drifts by, catching his eye, and they exchange a warm, tender smile. She approaches him, her hands reaching out to envelop his. Her gaze drawn to the ring on his finger, a symbol of her father's blessing, and soon, Kate and Merig's love. Kate's eyes sparkle as she looks up at Merig, her smile radiant before she speaks, her voice barely above a whisper.
(K)You’re still wearing the ring Dad gave you. You really like it, don’t you?
(M)Oh, yeah, I guess I didn't realize I still had it on. I don't know if I want to take it off. I really love it.
(K)Good, I’m glad. You look really happy, my love.
(M)I am happy. Everything you and your parents said to me tonight, made me realize something.
(K)What is it, sweetheart?
(M)You and your parents really don’t mind that I’m not human, do you?
(K)You’re just now figuring that out? I’ve been saying that this whole time, Merig.
(M)I know, but I still doubted myself about being worthy of being with you. Now I understand and I’m realizing that this is all happening, and this ring made me realize that. Your parents really like me and they’re okay with me marrying you and they seem to think I’m deserving of you. I really am worthy of your hand in marriage, aren’t I?
(K)That’s right, my love, now you finally understand. This ring will symbolize the love that I have for you when I put it on your finger during the ceremony and when you do the same with my ring. You have always been deserving of me and my love and I have willingly given myself to you. You doubted yourself because of what some people think about Fomors. As you know, some humans don’t think very highly of you or other Fomors. But you’re better than that and if you haven't noticed, I'm not them and I don't care if you're a Fomor because I still love you, so I don’t think that way, nor do I care what others think. We’re equals and we’re getting married in less than two months. This is exactly what I want. To be married to you and spend the rest of my life with you is what I want.
(M)[sigh] And I want to spend the rest of my life with you, too. I know you don't care that I'm a Fomor and that you still love me. I understand that and I’m sorry, Kate. I’m so sorry that I kept doubting myself and I hope you’re not angry with me.
(K)Of course not, Merig. I just wanted you to open your eyes and understand that I love you no matter what. You are my love, my goblin, and my earth.
Kate moves closer to Merig, her eyes locked on his as she gently places her hands on his chest. Merig's hands settle on Kate's waist, his fingers wrapping around her gently as he gazes down at her with a soft, warm smile. Kate's face mirrors his, her smile faltering for a moment as a single tear escapes, rolling down her cheek. Merig's thumb catches the tear, wiping it away as his other hand cradles her cheek, his touch tender. His eyes fill with a deep apology as he looks at her, and Kate's gaze meets his, the air thick with emotion. Then, Merig leans in, his lips brushing against Kate's in a tender, heartfelt kiss.
(M)I’m such an idiot, sweetheart, you love me and I’m worthy of you and I’ll take pride in that.
(K)Yes, my love, no one else is as deserving or worthy of me and I only want to give you my love and for you to be by my side. Touching me, kissing me, holding me, and making love to me. Only you are worthy of me and my love, as well as my hand in marriage.
(M)The same goes for you. I don’t want anyone else to be my wife, but you. I love you, Kate.
(K)I love you, too, Merig.
(M)I can’t wait to make you my wife.
(K)And I can’t wait to make you my husband.
(M)Less than two months and it will happen. I just feel bad about everything, and Larry was right.
(K)What do you mean, my love?
(M)[sigh] A while back, when you and I had just got together, I told Larry that I was worried about what others thought about you and I being together and that I thought I wasn’t deserving of you because I’m a Fomor. Larry told me that your opinion was the only one that should matter to me.
(K)Larry was right, Merig, and he’s still right. Maybe listen to your best friend once in a while. I know I should’ve since Ash kept convincing me that you loved me and that you’d eventually confess to me. And you did just that, on my birthday.
(M)And she was right, too, so we both doubted ourselves.
(K)So it seems, I realized a long time ago that you loved me and that I was deserving of your love. I didn’t at first, but as time went on, I understood that my life was coming together and I finally found someone who loves me and you aren’t even human. But that’s okay because you don’t have to be human and I wouldn’t want you to be, either. I would never want you to change or be someone or something other than the goblin that I fell in love with. I love you just as you are, Merig, and I will continue to love you just the way you are. Now you realize all of that and I’m so happy about it. Better late than never. I was waiting this whole time for you to understand, and I never once thought about leaving you. And now I get to bear witness to your revelation.
(M)Thank you, Kate, for putting up with me for this long as you have. And thank you for making me understand that I’m worthy of you.
(K)Of course, my love, it was all worth it to me.
(M)You’ve always been worth it and apparently, so have I.
(K)That’s right, and now that you understand that you’re worthy of my love, then you’re definitely worthy of making love to me.
(M)[smiles] I'm definitely worthy of that, and I’d be more than happy to make love to you.
Merig tenderly takes Kate's glasses from her face, setting them down on his bedside table, followed by his ring. They exchange a warm smile as he gently pulls her closer, leaning in for a kiss. As their lips meet, Merig's hands glide down to Kate's waist, lifting her long nightdress with a slow, deliberate motion until it slips away. In response, Kate deftly removes Merig's nightshirt, their kisses deepening as they undress one another. He pauses to switch off the bedside lamp, allowing the soft glow of the moonlight to envelop the room before resuming their passionate embrace. After a moment, they break the kiss, standing bare before each other, their eyes locked as they explore each other's bodies with gentle caresses. Merig then turns to the bed, pulling back the blanket as Kate settles down, positioning herself comfortably. She lies in the center of the bed, and Merig crawls in beside her, settling above her, his gaze penetrating as he gazes into her eyes.
(M)I love you so much, my moon.
(K)I love you, too, my earth.
Merig's gaze wanders over Kate's body, his lips tracing a path of gentle kisses and caresses that leave her sighing in surrender. As he explores her skin, Kate's arms relax, inviting him deeper. Merig's attention returns to Kate's face, and he showers her with tender kisses, their lips moving in perfect sync. Kate's arms wrap around Merig’s shoulders, pulling him closer and her legs wrap around his torso. They begin to lose themselves in their intimate moment. Merig holds onto Kate as their passion builds, and they make love, their hearts beating as one. As they finish, Merig's familiar laugh bursts forth, echoing through the house with uncontainable joy. The sound slowly fades, leaving behind a contented silence. It's a moment they've shared before, but one that never loses its magic. The sound of Merig's laughter, the warmth of their love, and the comfort of each other's embrace. The two pant and catch their breath as Merig gazes down at Kate. She smiles up at him, her eyes shining with delight as she speaks.
(K)You didn’t try to quiet your laugh this time. Are you not embarrassed by it anymore?
(M)No, I’m not. You said it was something you love about me, so why would I continue to silence it?
(K)You’re absolutely right. I love hearing it because it means that you’re happy being with me and making love to me and I love seeing you happy.
(M)Exactly, and I want you to hear just how happy I am.
(K)[smiles] Then I want to hear it again. I want to hear how happy you are by making love to me, my earth.
(M)As you wish, my moon, I would love nothing more than to make love to you again.
Merig leans back down to kiss Kate deeply before rising to his knees, still nestled between her legs. He gazes down at her and tenderly grasps her hips as they share another passionate moment, making love once more. As they bask in the afterglow, Merig's laugh echoes through the house once more, a joyous sound that fills the quiet space. Merig collapses onto the bed next to Kate, the two lovers’ bodies glistening with sweat as they pant and catch their breath. After a refreshing shower, they then lie naked and wrapped in each other's arms beneath a cozy blanket. Their gazes lock and a shared smile illuminates their faces before they continue to kiss softly. Gradually, their eyelids grow heavy, and they drift off to sleep, their bodies warm and content.
