Ch 1. Part 6. Pieces

Seeing how nervous Li has become, “Come on, mate, bring another drink for our guest” says Johann. “Oh, how cute! I did not know you had a prodigy. And who would be this guy?”, says Anastasia, enthusiastically asking welcome from everyone. “Nice to meet you, Anna. I have heard a lot about you from Johann here. You are as kind as he portrays it. Say, wasn’t the journey here cumbersome?”, asks Will, trying his best to ask where she came from, nicely. “Oh, quite a timid one you are. Nice to meet you. Yeah, no, the journey here from Warsaw wasn’t a rough one, at least compared to the trips I took when I was a kid. I came from the east but I originate from the north” says Anastasia, curious about what Will would say next. “Oh, from the north? Do you know the Johannes by any chance – the famous arms-dealers? I used to know a girl who was from the 3rd branch of that family. Her name was Cassandra, about the same age as me”, says Will, trying to get an affirmation of who Anastasia is.

While the two are busy talking, Li pulls Johann to the side. “Could I ask you something? I have a blueprint that was passed down from my grandparents. I could not quite make out what it was but the schematic looks like an intricate mirror or a portal. Will looks to be a person who knows how the mana flows and works so he could understand the schematic and explain it to you and make it work”, says Li, asking for Johann to notify Will. “The Johannes family... yes, I have heard of them. I do not think I know such person. At least, I have never taken the person’s name”, says Anastasia to Will.

Taking a neatly folded paper out of his suitcase, Li presents it to Johann. Surprised, “How is this possible? This is the exact same as the one Will had”, says Johann, not believing in his eyes. “Aye, Will! You brought your blueprint with you, no? I guess you are too afraid that Yuki would tear it”, says Johann, asking Will to get his blueprint over. Seeing how excited and rushed Will became after hearing the commission, “What are you guys conversing about?”, asks Anastasia, joining in on the discussion. “No, no, you see here, this is an influx inverter. My model did not have anything of sorts. The fine-tuned battery I gave you the other day, it was in place of the influx inverter. Now that I think about it, the outside ring almost looks like a barring”, says Will, pointing to his made explanations. “Would you look at that. Those markings there, it is a symbol of an early mana channeling ritual originating in the steppes of east. And these fins are too thin to be supports, and if that is a barring, this whole thing spins on the outside ring. Who knows, maybe it floats”, says Anastasia, pointing to the outer ring.

“Levitation, eh? I guess this really is an ancient technology. Say, where did you learn all this?” asks Johann, not really understanding the whole ordeal. “I am a writer, Johann. I need to know these things to make my novels as authentic as possible. And I just like this kind of ring chants, called the 3 Ring Chant”, says Anastasia, somewhat proud of her expertise. “Doesn't the Carnation family use such a system in ceremonial purposes? Their mana manipulation is only confined to their material creations and as a result, they make the best hand-made pens and anti-tank weapons. It is the closest we have ever gotten to magic wands”, says Will, giggling a little. Despite the whole world succeeding from feudalism, the echoes of vassalages could be heard from the Mafia families of powerful nations. “Worthless warmongers – their only excellence is their ability to destroy cities at a moment’s notice. Not sure why they cannot be docile for once. At least the Johannes are earnest in their way of living, but them, they are psychopaths – with no empathy for others at all. I heard they have beef with the Johannes family, too, ironically” says Anastasia, anger, and grudge in her voice prominent.

Trying his best to calm the situation, “Well, since you are well versed in such topic, could you read these?”, says Li, asking Anna to read the chants. Getting quiet for a moment, “They read “Settiremar” – Come forth, and “Setmartire” – Sent away. And there is also “Perrote” – Remain, in middle stone of both of these”, says Anna, regaining her soft smile. With smaller, less comprehensible rings all over the two schematics, the chants alone are not a viable way to understand the mechanism’s purpose. “There are somethings here that are in another language. Anna, you said you came from the east, so you should be able to read these, too, no?”, asks Will, further checking if she is who she says she is. “Despite it all, I cannot understand Russian, mate. I could read it, sure, but understanding a word on this is not really an option for me”, says Anna, rather nervous than usual. “№.000300826 “Bezuprechnyy Transportnyy Mekhanizm. №.01”, Anastasia. P. V., Suzaku. KH., 1784.g ... Zapatentovano v Moskve”, says Anna, incompetently. “Flawless Transportation Mechanism, No.1. Patented in Moscow, it says”, answers Li, confidently translating the phrase. “I know the details of the paper, at least the ones written, and there seemed to be nothing of importance. Why did you ask about the writings there, Mr. Hennessy? You seemed to know much more about patenting and such”, says Li, confused and doubting Will’s expertise.

Some people do not like to ask things out right. Instead, they would ask similar but not direct questions as a means to understand who they are dealing with. Or they just might be too shy to ask. “No, no, I can also read these, too. My reason for asking is something else, you see, and I do not think you would understand, Li”, says Will, trying to ease the awkwardness in the group at the moment. “Johann, mate, can you recreate it? These schematics are very well detailed, at least in the hardware information, so it will not be much work to understand them”, says Will, asking for Johann to recreate the schematics. “I do not know, mate. It is all too complicated for me to just wing it. How about you tell me what to make by describing them?” says Johann, humbly asking the expert to do his work. Hysterically smiling, “Eh~ Well, it is what I do, yes? Think of a round disk about 3 centimeters thick with helical cuts on the side, facing down. Wait, no, this is not right. The materials used in this are not listed. Judging from the formation of those components, the material is some kind of mana conductor material or an alloy of some kind. If we create such a thing from an ordinary steel, the whole thing might just explode, or not work out right”, says Will, halting Johann from channeling any more mana.
