Chapter 18: Unrecognized

Flying past shadows,branches and tall trees, dread and fear was evident on IT. He had just escaped from a life threatening situation.

IT got too greedy, not having been satisfied with the two cubs; dared to face off with their adult counterpart, their mother. Thinking about the mother bear caused IT to fly even faster.

The weakness and pain of losing too many limbs during the fight have made IT haggard but he still sped on, the strange fear of being followed by the bear was the only thing the kept IT from taking a break and resting.

Not paying enough attention, IT slams into a branch, the force caused IT to fall to the ground. It had gotten really dark, even if IT had sharp eagle eyes, it was of no use at night. Fearful at the same time disoriented, IT transforms into a bat. It took a lot more effort to shift into a different form but he managed it and flew on.

IT had reached the edge of his pack’s territory, tired it flops to the ground and slowly turn into a thin and haggard wolf. Tired but strangely very awake IT howled, his voice loud but wavering slightly.

It had only been have a day since he left the territory and how in bad state had IT become. His howls were answered and two pairs of glowing eyes came into view from the darkness ahead. Two familiar wolves slowly came into view, the grey wolf and the aggressive brown coated female. IT relieved at seeing his pack mates called for help.

But the moment they spotted IT they bared their teeth and growled. IT stared at his two packmates in bewilderment, their aggressive response made IT stand up immediately.

The wolves circled around him, flanking him and forcing IT to watch from two sides. IT barks a question but the two wolves did not give him anything but Snarls and aggressive responses.

Something was wrong with the situation, It was as if IT was an enemy to them. IT barked again, specifically at the grey wolf, the grey wolf just eyed IT with contempt, IT hears movement and fallen leaves shuffling from behind, IT turns around and backs off quickly as jaws snap. The brown wolf had tried to attack it from behind, the brown wolf continued to rush, but IT snaps back forcing her to back away, the slightest hint of movement, from his side caused IT to snap his head towards the direction, IT darts away. The grey wolf had almost caught IT’s neck while he was distracted but IT was fast, incredulously so.

IT glared at the two wolves  in front of him with seething rage his pack members tried to kill him by going for his neck. Their actions were too malicious, wolves wouldn’t normally do this to their pack members only towards other wolves and trespassers. It bugged IT out, but another thing kept nagging, It was not normal to be able to evade the flawless sneak attack the grey wolf did to IT, IT was already battered to begin with and he was still able to dodge. IT’s body as a wolf felt a little different too, almost every senses of IT’s body felt more sensitive, his bones and body were unbearably aching even more so than usual. IT momentarily glanced back at his body before quickly returning his gaze at his two seemingly treacherous packmates.

IT now understood their actions, his body had the flurry mix of colors from brown, grey, white and red a different fur pattern from his former grey coat. IT had realized that his form as a wolf had become vastly different. His bones were stronger, nerves more sensitive, sense of smell deeper, hearing and sight even sharper than before, his own scent too was completely different .

Slowly, still looking at the two wolves IT  shifted his form, his brown coat lost its color and greyed. IT altered his own scent  as well and slowly it returned to it’s former smell. IT watched as his packmates reaction turned from anger and aggression to straight out confusion.

Unsure with ears half lowered in submission and uncertainty, the brown wolf approached. IT let her get closer, she looked at IT and began taking in his scent.
