Chapter 9: Interview

[Informing them of the murder, as well as the accused’s home life.]

Ah, she was actually...!

Mm. It isn't hard to get behind. She was an odd parent who to me..agh.. My interpretation obviously! This really won't have my name on it, right?

Okay? Are you sure? I want it in writing, and with severance pay!

[We assured them that this interaction would remain anonymous. Teacher seen from Chapter 6.]

What was it..? Yes. It felt like she ruled in absolutes, you see? It was hard to have an open conversation with her. It either finished or was ending soon. How to say it..it felt that opposite to people who want live, who have that desire to live and know what happens next, but for her there wasn't any room for anything else but the ‘necessary’ in her heart. If she came to the decision that a 'next' wasn't needed..yes,I'm sure it end just like now.

It always felt like I was in an indirect questioning. A interrogation.

[What do you think about the premeditation and violence of the crime?]

Honestly..ah, I’m split. It’s undeniable that women are exposed to violence every day. I think this story is only surprising because it flipped that script, that it forced a different answer out of us. It can't be justified, don't get me wrong. Murder can never be! But still, it's easy to understand her reasons. I just feel bad for the child, I’m really worried about how he'll grow up and what he'll think.

If he takes after his mother..

I hope we can prevent such an outcome. He didn't see it for a long time, so.

I hope someone can show him that the world is beautiful.

[Do you think you can do that?]

I'm just a small nursery teacher, and the other kids already avoid him. And while I hope to have a little impact, I think it’s too late for these kinds of words. There is already rumours of him transferring, after all..yes. If he ever chooses to read this book in the future,I hope these words still have some meaning left.

「To please remember the world in all its beauty. 」

(An elderly couple who knew her in the past.)

:Oh..

: Yes, yes, she's the one who helped us move in. We couldn't afford any employees, and our kids are away too. During that time, she helped us settle in and do-little errand runs for us.

: She wasn't upbeat about it, but her sincerity came through. I. We believed she was a wonderful person.

(Did you see any other members of the family?)

: Did we dear?

: No. We heard about them through hearsay and such, but never physically meeting. For us, they were far away and as a small family, she had alot of time to herself once everyone was working. Sometimes, we asked why she didn't have more kids to help around the house, but in hindsight...ah,well.Who knows?

: The answer is lost to her imagination. Maybe that knife extended towards even everyday people like us. She didn't have many hobbies, though. I'd try to get her to play games, but she'd be bored easily. Mahjong is quite strategically engaging and social to begin with. For example, she’d always discard her tiles too quickly but secretly be harbouring a pair, and just win with a light smile...! One time, she won with only 5 tiles. It was ridu—

: Dear, not now! Excuse me!

(unintelligible)

: Ahem. But she always seemed bored, if only placating towards us.

: She only needed to plan for reality. She didn't need to take anything else seriously at all.

: She took her wins seriously...

: Don’t grumble.

(Would you two want to visit her in prison? Exchanging game tips is viable anywhere.)

:There's probably some whateveryoucallit sampling out there. A good reasonin..ow.

: Ah…we wouldn’t dream of it. Right?

: …

: ...

: Yes, yes, of course not. I didn’t hear you properly! These ears are getting old, haha. Just..she’ll really be only known as a murder now, won’t she? That won’t change. I wonder if she really was..responsible.

: ..we were briefed before this. Keep up,silly. It's undeniable! That, that. That right down to the letter, she executed his death.

(We offered additional services after the interview, with 12 fully paid sessions accounted for. As well as reaffirming that she is likely to be declared guilty. This offer has also been forwarded to the relatives with 15 sessions. However, this is rate-limited and can only be claimed during the next six months of the case. Further terms and conditions apply.)
