Chapter 14

Chapter 14

10 Minutes had already passed when Sally came back, she exited her mech in a good mood. Jay could tell that she got a win with his mech. She walks up to him with headgear in hand.

“How’s it?”

“Pretty solid for an iron body mish-mash.” She has to admit it through her teeth that the mech is standard. If she hadn’t seen his profile she would think that this is the work of an apprentice mech designer. Not some no-name, drop-out mech designer.

“You’re also pretty solid for a shorty”

“Hey! I’m not short in this avatar!” He said pouting her face.

“That's just an illusion, Is there anything else that bothers you in the mech?”

“I’m not an expert but I rode a better mech than this before so I know that it could be better. Other than that… I don't know how to describe it but your mech somehow feels like it’s at the right place at the right time. Like that.”

“Noted” That must be my specialization. Jay continues to mull over his option, he needs to reprogram the missile to launch in a specific rhythm to make it sound like music. Also need to figure out what exactly does hi specialization does.

“What are you doing?‘

“Mech design for you, sweetheart”

“Geh” She made a face like she just ate a full load of junk “Don’t ever say that again.”

“HAHAHA” Jay got a quick laugh from that reaction “I’m just seeing how a missile could be mimicked by you.”

“A what!?”

Jay launched into his explanation as to how the song would work together with her. He also presented a list of things that could work and mull them over with Sally. An hour passed like that and by the end, Jay got a pretty good idea of what to make.

Sally decides to go for another round in his mech while he works tirelessly on her new one. They decide that a light-medium range mech would suit her best from his available parts. Jay went ahead and designed the first part of their mech. The legs.

He went with the reverse joint like before since it has a better jump height and mobility. Next, the arms rip straight from [Ironbody: wasp MK2], It can support a large sniper rifle so switching to an assault rifle would not hurt. Jay considers downgrading the arms but decides to leave it since it would leave the mech more brittle.

Jay picked out the slickest Chasis he could find from the free pack. Not only it’s the slickest one it’s also the fastest one they could have. A light mech in medium range needs all the speed it can squeeze to battle out the medium and heavy.

He installs, the head along with the camera. This time, however, he didn’t forget to put in the tracking system. Last time it’s because the mech didn’t demand a tracking system to operate. But other than close-range focus mech a tracking system is a requirement. One that could make or break a mech if chosen poorly. A tracking system gives the people controlling the ability to hit their high-speed target.

In battle, their many possibility and varieties that a pilot couldn’t keep track of all the time. The tracking system makes it possible to know that your opponent might be running out of ammo or accurately shooting the opponent in a field of asteroids. Naturally, it wasn’t perfect but fighting without it will feel like watching a blurry smartwatch.

They are often pall CPC chips or central pilot control chips. They are usually no bigger than a thumb but much more important than a thumb in a mech. This one is an Iron body medium shoot-72 chip, made for combat no longer than medium range, otherwise the tracking would be horrible.

It also could keep track of selected opponent ammo and energy use. Which is a nice plus to its feature. Jay slots it into the headgear of His new mech.

Next, the energy generator. He decided to use the same one as his [Weird arm] since it’s the best one for mobility. He hid it in between the mech hull and a missile barrack that he put on the back.

Sally liked the idea of one big missile barrack and an assault rifle because it let her stay at medium range and be aggressive. Jay heeds that request and finds one that he needs. However, after searching his available assets, Jay finds out that no assault rifle would let him easily modify its parts.

He opened a shop to see if he could find one that lunch in a melodic tone. A quick search led him to a modified kinetic assault rifle that fired at in beat of the song “Kitty Be Kitten”. This piece is properly a joke that made it into existence. Jay brought it with a big smile, he could already see Sally getting worked up over it.

After that, he finds another missile racket at the beat of a metal song “Lucky Rock” and he switches it out from his old one. Then he put the thruster into place, the last piece of this puzzle.

Lastly, he finds a speaker to place on the missile and assault rifle.

All done

He let out a big sigh and quickly turned into a smile. The dark green mech stands before him with an accelerating ferocity. Looking at it he could feel its shape cutting through the sky. Jay waits for Sally to finish this match to introduce it to her.

[Please name your mech]

“Music box”

[Would you like to name your mech “Music Box”?]

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

“Yes”

[Music box]

[Class: lightweight mech]

[Grade: C]

[Build by Jay Rolona]

[A light mech aimed to complete the medium-range skirmish, designed to capitalize on the singer's specialty. Its main gimmick is the mimicry of the sound of its weapon via singer ability. Piloted by a singer this is an average mech, but when piloted by a normal mech pilot it’s a below-average mech.]

“I’m done” Sally exited the [Weird arm] and arrived on the side of [Music box]. She looks up and down checking out the new mech. “So this is…”

“Music box”

“Right… have anyone told you that your naming sense is very bad?”

“What do you mean? It gets the point across immediately.”

“...” Sally couldn’t believe her ears “Next time when you name a mech just ask me first OK?”

“Pointless argument, just go test it out.”

Sally rolled her eyes and hopped in the mech, the pilot seat opened up like the first one but the inside was wholly different. She could categorize it as more “simple” than the [weird arm]. It’s just a simple control stick meant for grabbing and aiming the rifle. Two of them for Two arms.

The [Music box] jumps into one of the testing simulations. Then Sally fires a barrage of missiles at the target. It came out like a fast drum sound.

“What am I supposed to do with this….” Sally is stumped, she calls Jay to confirm that she has to mimic the sound of this missile.

“Yeah, I read from that NET that you could do that.”

“Not, everything there is true”

“But, there is a really convincing paper about it,” Jay sent over a paper on this subject to her. She’s hardly the first person to have a singer specialization. The paper read that the singer's specialization could convincingly mimic the sound of any instrument or lyric with their mouth. There’s even a demonstration clip of it online.

“That could be fake…” She sounds soft and quiet.

“You never know until you give it a try.” Jay creates a broad smile on his face.

“....”

“The missile is not gonna fake themselves”

“Pew pew pew pew…” She tries to mimic the sound and it is very convincing. however, she stops mid-way through the missile song. An inner camera shows that her face is bright red.

“Why did you stop!? That sounds like the missile”

“I… don’t like it…” her voice sounds very weak, she covers her face with her hand to hide from this.

“You seem like you’re enjoying yourself though?” Jay plays a clip of her doing the missile back to her and Sally wants to hide under the mech seat. In the video, she has a serious face when opening her mouth, and then halfway through she loses her confidence. this video is the exact reason, She looks ridiculous here!

“I’m not partnering with you anymore!”

“Sorry..” Jay holds his laugh “I won’t show it, OK? You’re doing great! The missile sounds very convincing..”

“I’m not doing it anymore” She entered a pout expression

“I’m sorry. I won’t record you doing it any more OK?” Jay is almost regent bullying her a bit, Almost.

“Delete the vid”

“I..”

“Delete it”

“OK done!” Jay reluctantly deleted the video of her from this database. A pity, she looks cute when doing the missile sound. No matter, he could always get more of those to bully her.

It took a bit more convincing from Jay to get Sally to do the sound again. And the research paper did not lie, the sound she made easily matched the weapon sound. If the opponent CPC couldn’t detect the 10 percent difference, it would fool into believing that there's an incoming attack. Jay also tested Sally with the normal weapon and she could mimic the sound. For some reason, the singer has to recognize the “sound” they want to mimic as a song.

Then they proceed to a real match. Jay will be acting as an operator watching over Sally piloting and giving her commands or suggestions.

The match loads in and thankfully it’s not a space map. Or else Sally's whole gimmick would be useless. Her opponent is a Medium-medium mech. A medium width with medium range, a standard mech that is employed by every military.

The battle stage is set in a dense forest. but it’s a normal-sized forest so the mech tower above every tree, Sally, and her opponent could clearly see each other. A gunfight started as soon as they made contact.

She pulls the trigger after her CPC chip tracks her opponent. Her shot hit her opponent more than they hit her. Speed is key in these medium-range fights. No matter how good your tracking is if the opponent's speed surpasses the tracking, you could hardly shoot your opponent.

However, A medium mech could handle more versatile threats, Sally would be hopeless against a heavy long rang mech that put all its resources into tracking. But that’s not the case right now. Sally dances around her opponent sending missile after missile, while she dodges the laser rifle.

“Continue to pressure it”

“I don’t need you to say that”

The fight seems evenly matched, both sides don’t go down easily. especially when the forest could act as a shield. It’s not a good one but an obstacle nonetheless. Sally slides along the forest trying to find an opening or get a lucky shot.

BANG BANG

The rhythmic sound of a rifle echoes through the forest. The stalemate was broken when Sally received a crucial blow from her opponent. Their shot luckily landed on her shoulder, ripping her left arm off.

Her whole mech came to a stop for a split second and got rained down by her opponent. The [Music box] couldn’t help but fall to the ground helplessly. However, at that moment a missile sound is detected by the Medium pilot CPC ship.

He didn’t see the missile but he trusted his CPC chip and dashed backward, deploying a flare to redirect the missile. However that flying destruction never came, what came instead was another round of rifle shots.

Bang bang bang!

Caught out of his position, the medium takes a whole mag of [Kitty be kitten] kinetic assault rifle, ruining much of his mech. Sally follows her attack with another barrage of missiles, this time it’s the real one. The medium already used its flare, so they did the next best thing they could do. They use the thruster and quickly dash to the side.

The missile flew and mostly hit the ground, exploding everywhere it went. The medium could heave a sigh of relief but what threatening was his trajectory which got narrowed down by Sally's CPC chip. It predicts her opponent dodge and leads her to fire another round of her rifle.

Bang Bang Bang!

The rhythmic sound of [kitty be kitten] echoes. All the shots hit the fleeing opponent and put them down for good.

It’s her victory.
