Potential

Potential

The crows flew around the tallest tower of the school, in a much calmer matter. They were recently fed and did not need to fight for food. Inside the tower, there was the principal’s office. Or, in other words, the Shadow Lady’s lair. A pungent stench traveled through the spiral stairs before the highest peak. Young Nilo was carrying the recently emptied buckets of rotten meat and animal carcasses that were consumed by the Fog-afflicted crows. He left the buckets in the cabinet, washed his hands, and then approached the door. As he got closer, he turned back and made sure no one was there. It was rare for someone to go into that tower, but he still made sure. He then opened the door and approached the desk. The copper lamp was still there, unmoved. He grabbed the tip and opened it. Fog came out of it forcefully, materializing into the feminine figure.

-I have awakened.-

She said with her distorted voice, looking around her, noticing the office being kept tidy and clean thanks to her assistant. The only unkempt area was the desk, where patterns of dust accumulated around it. She analyzed these patterns, and then spoke.

-Tell me what’s been going on this past week.-

By being observant, she managed to infer how much time had passed while she slept.

-Of course. May I take a seat?-

The Shadow Lady waved at the seat, permitting him to do so.

-The crows… I fed them today. I will be feeding them again in two weeks. The construction of the left wing of the school has been put to a standstill since the negotiations with the Okikes have stopped. We have been keeping what we have of the school clean and stable. The teachers have done their lessons according to expectations. Lastly, the plantsfolk lady is behaving and doesn’t seem to want to go against our agreement.-

-I understand. Let’s get straight to the point. Tell me about all our students. Is there anyone with good potential?-

This story has been stolen from Royal Road. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

Nilo gathered his thoughts for a moment before responding.

-There are a couple of students that seem to have decent magical power within. Either be it by natural means, artificial, or their prior training.-

-Tell me more about them, then.-

-Let's begin with the vampire girl. She could be an asset. Vampires are powerful sorcerers, if not for their reliance on blood.-

-Continue.-

-There’s also the D’Vane girl, she hasn’t arrived yet, but our spies say she shows great potential. And that’s something big to say coming from me.-

-Anyone else?-

-The trio of sisters. The one that seems to have a lot of inherent potential is the eldest, Thorn.-

The Shadow Lady kept to herself for a moment and then spoke.

-I see. Today they shall learn how to draw their first magic runes with Lady Carmine. Tell me how it goes. I need to know every detail.-

Nilo stood again, taking a bow.

-Alright my lady. Thank you for letting me take part in the lessons as well. Even if it’s just to observe the students.-

The Shadow Lady tried to show a smile, but her ethereal condition wouldn’t let her. She tried to squint her eyes in a friendly manner.

-Of course. I also need you to get stronger, my child. You shall go now. I will take a moment before going over my tasks.-

Nilo nodded and started approaching the door.

-And Nilo? Thank you for keeping me in the loop.-

He smiled.

-Anytime, my lady.-

He came out of the room. As he did this, the Fog thickened, and came out the window of her office. The Shadow Lady transported herself through the Fog. Monitoring the totality of Suspiria’s surface was no easy task. But she was no ordinary lady either.
