Chapter 053: Hopefully This One Goes Better

I couldn’t help being caught in a complete daze over the rich flavours that truly just dance perfectly to the tune of my exquisite pallet. Licking my lips as I looked down at the terrified face that lay on the corpse in front of me; no visible injuries existed on his body so there was nothing to link him to me. Not that I cared about hiding as any trouble that comes will truly only gift me more delicious meals to devour.

“Plus I’m planning to hand in their heads to get their bounty.”

And that guy… Now THAT was finger licking good.

He must have been a pretty big sinner but I certainly don’t mind the added spice. It’s rather pricey to feed this flame of mine but it wasn’t as if I needed to have knowledge of that skill as motivation to find myself some big fat snacks. Speaking of… I should probably check the exact information.

All I knew about the mystery skills (due to a certain barely functioning system keeping more hidden than they tell me) was what my new system zapped into my head. Although it seemed they were a rather big deal - so actually comprehending what all of that meant was another matter which I was not getting very far into. Truthfully all I knew was one sin equalled .01 exp for my ultimate grade flame.

Whatever that meant.

Fortunately I now possess a massive plus in this new system.

I always had a hand on how to use this skill - not as if I had never used this flame of mine before I entered the game - though it is certainly interesting to see that in writing. Plus it seemed like I somewhat have been underselling my own talents. However I also can’t exactly use it carelessly if I don’t want some unfortunate connections to be made by the most observant.

It’s a sad realisation but nothing I could change.

Now I should probably check my other previously hidden skill as I’m honestly clueless.

So the prodigal son finally fails to provide themself usefulness. That description was cool and all nevertheless it sounded like some edgy nonsense that a game development intern quickly threw up but was good enough that they never bothered putting in another. That effect being the exact same.

In other words… Completely useless.

Guess this updated model is still better than Big B; at least the game system actually gave me information instead of yelling [REDACTED] or slapping me with a good old fashioned “not applicable”. Certainly refreshing to have a companion that doesn’t hide behind honest feedback. Instead hiding behind some fancy language that tells me a lot of nothing.

Yeah but that was my hard work not yours.

“Well I should probably report this to the next city over. If the lord already knows about there being an admittedly weak Monster Subsumer or even what one of those are… Well that’ll be good in itself~.” I said while looking around at the scene. “This world has an ecosystem all of its own and all I need is a single crack in order to break inside; becoming a noble shouldn’t be too difficult.”

Walking up to the carriage I can’t help mumbling to myself. “Especially if I introduce my more efficient form to the people of this world; just a few bad actors will greatly help me...”

Despite all the things that had changed I couldn’t help feeling a bit more hopeful for the future - the possibility that only the progress of the world was what really changed. Perhaps to continents shifted around a little while the water levels had decreased but Axis maybe still followed the same plot. It was unlikely however the existence of the Monster Subsumer from the Monster Institution was a positive sign.

They were a terrorist organisation that essentially worked to take the strength as well as longevity innate to monsters for themselves. That in itself was controversial since monsters were already a sore spot for many. While some organisations see them as just living creatures while others the source of evil…

Avoiding death could potentially doom the world itself.

Of course, it was common knowledge that they were apparently a trial from the Second Mother but there were those that say she didn’t even exist.

Some didn’t even acknowledge Mother exists.

Although it made sense from a god's perspective; how would you get more influence if you acknowledged the existence of gods who were even better than you? Why wouldn’t your potential followers just follow the far stronger god as well as their pantheon. If you managed to get into the Mother’s little club there would be few issues yet that also meant grovelling to someone.

“Guess it sucks to suck…” So I muttered as I finally arrived at the carriage while my hands busied themselves with reloading bullet by bullet. I also needed to refill the speed-reloaders I used. Even if I had a few more it was always better to be safe than sorry.

I also need to learn some trigger discipline since I could have easily dealt with that situation if I just took the time to add a few more bullets into the cylinder rather than going in hot.

For now there was something else to focus on.

“What do I do with this carriage…”

Turns out I’m still a little rich girl at heart; although over a decade will make anyone not want to walk about like a black collar worker.

A class of worker that has mostly been erased from the great German empire due to our technological advances causing machinery to easily fill in the gaps. America meanwhile still practised slavery, sorry, indentured labour through slapping their economically unfortunate with bloated punishments. Those then ruin their job opportunities resulting in them having no option but to fall into crime.

Long live the emperor!

Anyways, I got a little distracted, this carriage was a life saver since it allowed me to no longer need to bother walking. The good thing about this beast was that they were brought for the purpose of (not just to sell the stranded merchant act) increasing the power of the Monster Subsumer. This meant the monsters were very high level for this area which also correlated with an increase in intelligence.

As such the level 24 Cammare was smart enough to happily bring me to the city with me just needing to shoot the occasional foolishly desperate wolf.

There were a lot less bandits than one would expect from those novels yet it wasn’t surprising as the prior group probably wiped them all out. Those bandits likely still had a few people left at the homebase but I’m too lazy to hunt them down for no benefit. Just reporting them to the city should be enough.

It’s unlikely there are any more major fighters.

Although strange they’d bring all their combat potential to ambush one person, it was more unlikely they still had more, that could just be due to being cautious about the strength of players.

Either way it hardly mattered anymore nor did I care.

Looking into the distance revealed that a large concrete wall stood tall with familiarly equipped figures walking across to occasionally gaze out into the brush below. Said foliage seemed to have been purposefully diminished however it was clear that not much maintenance had been done. Slowly those plants were reclaiming the area with the grass already being high enough to hide a horned bunny or two.

At the end of the road was a large reinforced wooden gate behind a larger portcullis that was hoisted up to allow traffic into the wall even if the gate still prevented immediate entry. Security was also clearly quite high which could be annoying. Either way I wasn’t a criminal so hopefully I’ll be able to get in anyway.

There was also quite a line at the gate with those who were approved being let inside through a small metal door that certainly slowed down the progress of things.

The people themselves didn’t exactly look like merchants or adventurers who were coming back from a hard time earning some pocket change. Rather they reminded me of the refugees I saw from my various “outings”, not those who risked their lives to run from war, specifically those who were hit by some disaster out of their control. Their faces not holding relief but a sense of disbelief over what was happening.

They also weren’t my problem so I just continued on toward the gate - at least I made sure that the monster didn’t just barrel through the crowds. Would be horrid for my optics. I just had no desire to wait for those emotionally devastated people that could hardly understand they were standing out in front of a city.

“Halt; we aren’t accepting an more refugees into the cit-”

“Do I look like a refuge?” I immediately counted one of the guards who walked out to challenge my approach up to the gate as if a refuge would have a carriage like this. “I have some stuff to report about some bandits which is linked to this carriage.”

He narrowed his eyes as if questioning if I was lying but soon relented a little. “I’ll tell my boss however if you end up being a lai-”

“I don’t recommend finishing that.” Giving him a bright smile that, for some reason, made him shiver.
