Chap 31: What’s your movement?

Chap 31: What’s your movement?

Lug joined Hannah in her car.

She was waiting for him there, her eyes glued to her phone as she wrote mechanically.

Lug looked at her for a moment, then put his head against the headrest and sighed.

After all this, he had a lot to ponder.

What did Mary have to hide that was so important? Why had she changed so much in the space of a few minutes? Why had Hannah gone out so quickly and seemed so upset?

Lug was spoiled for choice, but he decided to ask himself the least relevant question he could think of :

"Another exhibitionist ghost, am I attracting them or what? I've heard that we attract what we are attracted to... Could it be that... I'm an exhibitionist who doesn't know it?"

"Lug. I need to tell you something."

Hannah had suddenly stopped typing on her phone and was looking at Lug, also with her head put against the headrest.

Lug having difficulty confronting tense situations decided as usual to defuse the tension with strokes of humor :

"You saw, she served tea but no cookies, maybe deep down she was the one who didn't want us to stay too long!"

Hannah looked at him without moving, her blue eyes slightly hidden by a blonde streak.

She sat up slowly and said :

"She burned the postcards. I don't know what she's trying to hide but she's succeeded, it's back to square one."

Lug didn’t seem too surprised about that news.

"I thought she looked suspicious, at least I found this on the way to the bathroom I guess she didn't burn everything!"

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

Lug while saying this was holding out his phone on which Hannah could see the photo taken of the painting.

He had chosen once again to lie in a crude way, naively thinking that it had worked the first time.

"Is that supposed to tell me something?" said Hannah a little confused.

"Look at the next picture."

Hannah looked at the next picture, zoomed in on the small writing, the more she read the more her eyes widened.

"But... this is... You said you found this in the bathroom?"

"Yes, why?"

Hannah didn't believe him for a second.

Her aunt had told her in a chilling way that she had burned all of Linette's things and that Hannah would find nothing.

She couldn't believe for a moment that this same person would leave a clue like that lying around in the bathroom, between two celebrity magazines.

But Hannah was too happy to finally have a lead to follow, she agreed once again not to try to understand Lug and his lies.

"You have a nose. It's not just a painting, it's a postcard. And back here look, she says this place is her treasure! She loved it so much that she decided to commission an artist to paint the place for her because there was no postcard of this lake. It’s written that she used to go there regularly...we need to find out where this is!"

Hannah had regained her energy.

She started the car and drove off.

"You know where to go?" asked Lug.

"I'll take you home, we've made good progress today!"

Lug stared at the road for a moment.

To break the silence he decided once again to say the least interesting thing he had in mind.

"What if the treasure is the friends we make along the way?"

Hannah giggled.

"Ahahah you are adorable."

Lug smiled.

"She thinks I am adorable… it can only be positive!" he thought.

"I don't know what the treasure is but as I told you before, what's written on the letter suggests that it's something concrete, something solid."

Lug did not know what she was referring to, but he did not ask for any information about the contents of the letter. He already knew enough, he thought.

They arrived at the cemetery in the early evening.

"I'll try to find where this lake can be, will you send me the pictures? As soon as I find it I'll call you and we'll go together!"

Hannah left him with these words.

He watched the car drive away.

The same two guards in the same place as in the morning, nodding in the same way.

"It's good to be home," Lug thought.

If life is a perpetual motion, the motion that animated Lug was to continually go in circles.

But Lug felt that this movement was changing, maybe for once he was moving forward.

And that terrified him.
