Chap 10: The naked runner

After an hour of cycling uphill, Lug finally reached the halfway point.

He was exhausted, it was late afternoon and there were only a few hours of sunlight left.

He decided to take a break in the shade of a tree, on a big rock.

He closed his eyes and listened to the wind dancing on the leaves of the trees.

Birds and crickets singing, and a man shouting...

"A man shouting?" Lug said surprised.

Lug stood up from his rock and saw a man running a sprint, totally naked in the forest behind him.

This man was followed by a dog.

"What the hell is going on here? » thought Lug.

Lug made a quick decision: getting back on his bike and leave.

But as soon as he started cycling, the naked man followed him.

"I'm going to overtake you," he said, running faster and faster behind Lug.

Out of fear Lug started to cycle even faster, until the bike chain moved and he was forced to stop.

Lug was sweating, he looked with panic at the naked man trotting on the spot.

"Already finished? Ahahahahah!" said the man as he began to stretch.

Lug did not even bother to answer, he put the chain back in place.

Suddenly the stranger's head appeared right in front of him.

Lug shuddered.

"What's the matter with you? What do you want?" Asked Lug.

The man stood on one foot and rubbed his chin.

"A living person who can see ghosts is not common..."

Lug had realized right away that this man was a ghost, but he had gotten carried away.

If he hadn't started cycling immediately after seeing him, this ghost probably wouldn’t have noticed Lug.

His haste had attracted the attention of a very strange ghost.

That naked ghost was quite tall, thin, had long blond hair and the start of a beard. He had blue eyes with an arrogant look on his face.

"I don't want to talk to you..." said Lug bluntly.

"But I want to, how do we do it? Who wins? I don't like frustration, I can be very annoying when I'm frustrated..." said the ghost.

Lug immediately understood the risk of ignoring him any longer, but he didn't want to prove him right either.

He decided to compromise.

"Look, I'll give you 10 minutes of my time, then I go back on the road."

"It’s fine with me! So how come you can see ghosts?"

Lug looked in the other direction while talking to that naked man.

"A rock fell on my head and now I can communicate with the dead. »

"That's unusual..."

"And you, why are you naked? And why is that dog following you?"

"Aaaah, you finally ask the question! I'm naked because I'm free, death freed me from my body, but before that I had already freed myself from my clothes! I lived in this forest with my dog, in harmony with nature. But we died together recently, I must have cooked the wrong mushroom...?"

"That's... Quite a story... So that dog is a ghost? A ghost dog... I've never seen one before!"

"I didn't think ghost animals were rare, well I don't know much about ghosts and death in general! All I know is that I love being a ghost! I run and run and run... Aaaah... What a life!"

Lug didn't understand what the excitement was about running naked, but he didn't ask for more explanation, he wanted the conversation to end so he could leave.

"Listen young man, maybe it's my ghost power... But I feel that you are judging me."

Indeed, Lug was judging him.

"I just think shame is a good thing sometimes."

The nudist ghost looked surprised and offended.

"A prudish... Tss I’ve lost interest in you, you can leave!"

Lug didn't hesitate, he took his bike and went away slowly so that this ghost doesn’t think it’s a race, he felt challenged way too easily.

That’s the characteristic of a man who has things to prove to himself, Lug had no time to lose with that, he already had enough to do with himself.

As soon as he started riding away on his bike, the ghost shouted:

"My name is Xam, come back whenever you want! Even if you are annoying!"

He shouted while waving his hand.

Lug continued on his way without saying anything.

After an hour of cycling, the cemetery was finally in sight.

Passing by the tents gave Lug the shivers, but in the end no one stopped him.

The two guards who had blocked him a few hours earlier even waved at him from afar.

But he was only really reassured when he closed the cemetery gates behind him.

He grabbed his shopping bag and headed home, the sun was about to set.

It had been an exhausting day for Lug, he felt like he was gone for a week.

In the distance, he could see Eno leaning against the wall of his house, waiting for him.

It made Lug happy to see that someone was waiting for his return.
