Chap 14: Xam the sinner (part 1)

Let's go back in time, not too far, a few days before Lug discovered the TV.

In-between the road and the city there was a man who had been dead for only a few weeks.

His body was still rotting somewhere in the forest.

No one had looked for him, he was already forgotten while alive, obviously his death went unnoticed.

This man is sometimes called Nax, sometimes Pox, sometimes Mag and lately Xam...

Perhaps he will tell you that he freed himself from his name as he freed himself from his clothes.

Anyway, this man loved to run naked in the woods with his dog.

He was playful and would test the hikers who passed through the forest, trying to surprise them.

He was convinced in his heart that people were just pretending to ignore him.

In the first few weeks he was in denial of his death.

As time passed he began to despair of finding anyone to shock, to amaze, to be indignant about his behavior.

He had lacked attention all his life and the worst thing that could happen to him was to spend his death in oblivion.

So when he met Lug, he was filled with joy.

Finally, someone can see him!

But very quickly this joy gave way to sadness and boredom as Lug left.

So he decided to go on a journey, to find this fascinating being who could see him.

He ran along the road with his faithful dog.

Xam liked to tell the hikers, who did not hear him, that his dog had been so faithful that he had accompanied him in death.

Of course, he didn't mention that he was at fault for his dog's death, because of his lack of knowledge of the forest and its mushrooms.

After a few minutes of running, he arrived at a fork in the road.

He could go straight, left or right.

He put a finger in his mouth, and pointed it towards the sky, as if to feel the wind.

Xam had a strong taste for theater, he made a spectacle of himself even without a spectator around.

After feigning concentration he continued straight ahead.

He ran for another hour before he came across another ghost.

It was a woman, dressed in white, her long and black hair hiding her face.

She was at the side of the road, motionless.

Xam approached her to ask for directions.

Ghosts could easily recognize each other, unlike humans who could only tell the difference between the dead and the living with practice.

Xam hated ghosts, he hadn't met many but he found them creepy and boring.

It is with a certain disgust that he forced himself to ask his way to this woman who must have been there at the edge of this road for decades.

"Hum, hum. Do you know where the cemetery is?" asked Xam.

The ghost did not move.

"Oh no, are you one of those super boring ghosts that don't talk and don't move?"

Xam lightly shook the ghost's robe with his toe.

The ghost turned its head slowly and began to scream.

Then it gritted its teeth and threw itself at Xam.

He got scared and ran with all his strength, back to where he came from.

He only stopped at the fork in the road he had crossed earlier.

"These ghosts... aaah... Always abusing you, they either do nothing for years or they try to kill you... Or rather kill you again."

This time Xam took to the left, it was quite quickly that he began to glimpse a small castle in the distance.

"This must be where he came from" said Xam, full of hope.

He began to see large tents to his left, a threatening aura emanating from them.

He hesitated to continue forward.

That's when he saw two huge guards standing in front of him.

"Where did they come from, how could I have missed two such mountains!" he thought.

"Stop, no in, no out," said the two guards, in very basic English.

"No, you don't understand. I'm lost. I have no desire to go to your camp, don't worry."

While saying this, Xam began to back away.

"You no leave," the two guards said as they pointed their spears at him.

They began to push him with their spears towards their camp.

At that moment, Xam saw Lug pass by with his cart in the distance.

He was quietly going home.

Xam shouted to him as if his life depended on it.

But even with all the effort in the world, Lug only waved and said hello before hurrying back.

Xam felt abandoned.

The spears of the two guards became even more urgent as they pushed him toward the camp.

"But you said I wasn't allowed to go in...."

Xam felt like crying, his dog continued to follow him in this misadventure.

They soon arrived in front of the biggest tent, the spears forced Xam to enter.

He was shocked, he had never seen a place so richly decorated.

All this in a huge tent materialized by a ghost.

He had no desire to meet the architect of the place.

But it was already too late.
