Fool Me Twice

"Um."

You turn on the spot, inspecting the navigational aide offered by the activation of the [Soul Compass].

The good news is, it seems to be showing the cardinal directions, just like a regular compass. The bad news is--since you don't know where anything is, that doesn't much help you at the moment.

Also, the directions show up as guiding overlays on your Soul Sight, which are confusing your perception of the normal world. Still, you manage to determine--more like surmise--that you came from South-East the night before. If your assumption is correct, going in that direction will bring you back to a literal field of (indeterminable) foodstuffs.

The soles of your feet feel raw from the rocks and thorns you're continually stepping on, but you stubbornly trudge on. It's not like you're very keen on the mystery vegetable, but apparently, at this point, anything remotely edible will do.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

You don't know this, because you haven't figured out timekeeping yet, but it only takes you 20 gongs to reach the edge of the forest. You'd probably only complain that it felt longer, but that's perfectly normal.

When you step out from under the last tree into the sunshine, you finally stop. You're not sure if you're back where you started, but those neat rows of green leaves look awefully familiar. You step up to one close-by.

Remembering the humiliation from your first night, you brace for failure as you grab the thing by the stem. You pull.

What you don't expect is for the vegetable to slide out of the earth with barely any resistance. You fail to catch yourself, and so the excess force you applied topples you over backwards, landing you in the mud at the hands of nightshade for the second time.

Startled, you blink up at the System message:

[Notification]

[You have harvested [Cabbage, common].

You have received 5 EXP!

Harvesting [Cabbage, common] has granted you 1 Mana.]
