Level Up!
Exploration of an Amazing City

Exploration of an Amazing City

The sun shone through the window into my eyes causing me to groan. I roll over but it's too late, I've woken up. I sigh and sit up to see an annoying notification that I still have level up points to assign. I swipe it off, I'll deal with that later. I have a large city to explore today, I'll worry about the points later. I did notice that my menu says I'm still in a party with Matt.

I climb out of bed reluctantly, I just want to lay there for awhile longer. I'm wearing a simple, white tank top and my purple underwear. My hair is a mess and I have slight bags under my eyes. It might take a bit to adjust to sleeping at inns that have no curtains. Or camping. I've never been camping in the real world. My parents felt it was a waste of time and money.

I got dressed and grabbed my gear before checking all of the drawers in the dresser and wardrobe. There were some miscellaneous things and even two gold coins. I pocketed the money but left all the other items. I brush out my hair and yawn before finally leaving the cozy room.

I walk down the stairs at the end of the short hallway and find myself in the main lobby, attached was a small tavern and Matt was waiting for me at a table. He waves me over with a kind smile on his face, he's decked out in his armor, ready for adventure just as I am. I walk over and sit with him, "What's on the agenda today?" I ask.

He looks confused for a moment, "Oh! Well I wasn't sure what you would like to do. This is a new city for you and there are plenty of things to do. There are also guilds to check out if that's something you're interested in. Might help expand the party so we can go on bigger missions." Matt says. He almost sounds like a tutorial character.

"Well, it wouldn't hurt to look into a guild. That would also help us get jobs easier to earn more." I say, more or less talking to myself.

"There are also a variety of shops here. I'm sure we could find many things to help us out and give us some direction." He says as a waitress comes to our table and hands us menus and sets two glasses of water in front of us. To my surprise I actually couldn't read the language it was in. The other thing that surprised me that I did not expect is that this feels like the real world. How our restaurants were set up. The realism took me back a moment.

"I'll be back in just a moment, take your time looking over the menu." The waitress says with a cute smile before heading off.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

I blush a little after the surprise faded, I finally lean across the table and whisper to Matt, "I- I can't read the menu." I'm honestly embarrassed. I didn't even think about not being able to read the language here. It's a video game, shouldn't it be set to my language? But here I am, staring at a menu I can't read. It looks like it could almost be a language I've seen before but it was off. Off just enough that I couldn't make anything out.

He looked at me a bit surprised, "Oh, um, you can't read common?" He asks curious.

"It's complicated." I sigh.

He smiles and nods before reading through the items and explaining what some of them were. Eventually the waitress comes back and he orders for both of us like a gentleman and I couldn't help but sip my water to sooth my embarrassment. Why am I so embarrassed when I'm in a game? The immersion was unreal though, maybe I'll actually feel like this is real life if I'm here long enough. That wouldn't be so bad.

After an actually delicious meal we leave the inn and head into the city, I didn't get a good look around last night when we got here. The buildings weren't actually that tall, the tallest one only four stories tall. Apparently that was the school and the main hall was actually only two stories but longer. The streets wove through the buildings, many shops and venders, houses and apartments, a park to the east and a fountain in the center in front of the main hall. A tall stone wall encircled the city and guards patrolled the streets as people went about their day to day life.

"Are monsters an issue in the area?" I ask curiously.

"Yes. Although the wall around the city was built when the monster issue was much worse. Thanks to adventurers and the local guilds the monster issue is much more under control." Matt explains. There is a lot more depth here than I honestly expected and I can't help but smile. I also started noticing even more races; elves, dwarfs, humans, furries. My eyes are a bit wide as I look over all the people. Even within these races there is diversity and it's simply beautiful.

"Alright, where is the guild then? Might as well start there." I say.

"Well there are a couple guilds here. Magic, alchemy, adventuring--"

"Adventuring is probably best for us." I comment. He nods and we start heading off to the north east part of town. There were trees in between buildings and children laughter echos from a tree house by what is probably an apartment building or some type of housing. Finally we get to a building sitting on a small yard with practice dummies and targets set up outside and a couple of people dressed in armor chatting near the steps going up to the door. It was a two story building with a crest of a shield and sword above the heavy wood door.

"Lets head in and see what the criteria is for joining." Matt says as he leads me up the stone steps and holds the door open for me.
